FSA Cooks Up Recipes for Brighter Futures
C
ULINARY DELIGHTS FROM THE OVENS OF LOCAL RESTAURANTS AND WINERIES will be the prized winnings when gift certificates are raffled by the Family Service Agency for their annual Cooking Up Dreams event which benefits at risk children, families, and seniors. “Even though we can’t meet in person, we still need to raise critical funds for mental health counseling and family support services,” said
Executive Director Lisa Brabo. “Last year, we experienced an increase in services by 20 percent. There are a lot of families and seniors that still need our help.” This year, FSA will use a portion of the sponsorship funds to purchase gift certificates to 50 restaurants and wineries. In lieu of attending an inperson event, participants are being asked to donate the typical cost of a ticket ($125 and up). In return, they will be entered into a raffle to win $50, $75, and $100 gift certificates for establishments in the Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, or Lompoc areas AND receive a recipe booklet containing delectable dishes from these local chefs. Proceeds from the fundraiser benefit
mental health counseling and family support services for at-risk children, families, and seniors provided by FSA, Santa Maria Valley Youth & Family Center, and Guadalupe’s Little House By The Park. “In past years, restaurants have been generous in supporting our fundraiser by bringing their best dishes to our cooking competition. Knowing the toll the pandemic has taken on the hospitality industry, we hope to give back to these businesses, in a small way, and acknowledge the key role they play in our community,” Brabo added, such as to the team from the BoatHouse pictured on the cover. Virtual Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival to Celebrate Climate Leadership
H
By Daisy Scott / VOICE
OSTING COMPELLING SPEAKERS, ENGAGING EXHIBITS, AND CREATIVE DISPLAYS of local talent, Earth Day annually unites Santa Barbara in appreciation for our planet and community. Now, determined to continue this beloved tradition, the Community Environmental Council will hold its #CelebrateClimateLeadership 2021 Virtual Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival April 22nd to the 24th. “We are proud of the wide variety of community groups participating in this year’s event and excited that this year’s platform includes a virtual exhibit hall. Our focus on youth, business, and community leadership over three days provides something for everyone,” shared Kathi King, Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival Director. “While we wish we were all together in the park, we know that the inspiration and passion of our participants will jump off the screen and bring us together to celebrate The Virtual Santa Barbara Earth climate leadership Day Festival will take place in our region.” between 12 noon and 5:30pm Born out of the outrage following April 22nd, 23rd, and 24th. To the 1969 Santa learn more, take the “Earth Day — Barbara Channel Every Day” pledge, and view the Oil Spill, Earth Day remains a personal festival, visit www.sbearthday.org holiday for the local community. Today, activists continue to use the holiday to honor our planet and call for fast action against the climate crisis. “In 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets and parks on the first Earth Day to learn about how they could protect the environment, creating a national shock wave that fueled rapid and impactful action,” said CEC CEO Sigrid Wright in a statement. “This is the kind of inspired action we need today, and it can happen here if we each lean in and commit – to learning, to leading, and taking bold action every day toward environmental solutions.” Each day of the festival will recognize a different component of
climate leadership, honoring youth, business, and community activists. Through this theme, the festival will not only increase awareness of individuals currently making a difference, but also encourage attendees to take their own actions in the fight against climate change. One of the event’s main highlights is its selection of featured speakers, including Annie Leonard, the Executive Director of Greenpeace USA and this year’s recipient of the CEC Environmental Hero Award. Other speakers include CEO of 1% for the Planet Kate Williams, CEO of Regen Network Gregory Landua, and a number of elected officials, including Congressman Salud Carbajal. The festival will also celebrate local creatives by featuring the winners of two competitions — the Wildling Museum of Art and Nature’s “Why Earth Day Matters” poetry contest, and the Santa Barbara Channelkeeper’s 18th Annual Juried Art Contest. Additionally, the festival will reveal a new Earth Day Mural painted on the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara. True to its in-person form, the virtual festival will further include a selection of engaging musical performances. Scheduled musicians include Kenny Loggins, Jackson Gillies, and Zach Gill, with even a virtual Earth Day Dance Party planned. Moreover, CEC will support local businesses and organizations by hosting “virtual booths” via its online platform. Through this, festival attendees will still be able to meet exhibitors, learn more about their businesses, and even purchase merchandise. Yet before the festival begins, CEC challenges community members to take the “Earth Day — Every Day” pledge, and complete
21 actions to support Mother Earth. When challenge participants post photos of themselves taking these actions on social media with the hashtags#SBEarthDay #EarthDayEveryDay, they become eligible to receive prizes during the virtual festival.

Film Festival Announces Award-Winning Movies
XCEPTIONALLY RICH CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND A QUICK WIT have defined the soaring career of Sacha Baron Cohen, who was honored with the Outstanding Performer of the Year Award by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival at a Tribute on April 8th. Baron Cohen, an Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and Golden Globe-winning actor, virtually sat down with The Hollywood Reporter’s longtime awards columnist, host of the Awards Chatter podcast, and Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts professor Scott Feinberg for an in-depth discussion about his film career. During Baron Cohen’s conversation with Feinberg, guests enjoyed nostalgic clips of his film career, including Da Ali G Show, Borat, Bruno, Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber, Hugo, Les Misérables, and more. Some of the highlights from the conversation included: On Cohen's College thesis at Cambridge and how it’s tied to Chicago 7’s Abbie Hoffman: “I was a history student and I was really interested in this concept in that in the 60’s, Jews were 30 times more likely than regular white Americans to be involved in the Black Civil Rights Movement. I was really proud of it as a young Jewish, fairly left wing kid. There wasn’t much written about it, so I went over to America with 400 pounds; I managed to travel around America, based in Atlanta at a YMCA, which at the time was kind of like a homeless shelter, while I was researching at the Martin Luther King Center; I went around to interviewing various black civil rights leaders to learn about this concept of the ‘Jewish Black Alliance.’ One of them, who went down to the south to protest against systemic racism was none other than Abbie Hoffman. Abbie and his cohorts were integral to my thesis. My thesis was….there’s no such thing as the Jewish Black Alliance, because for an alliance to exist both sides needed to know that they are in alliance with the other side. Jews like Abbie, Swimer, and Goodman... went down as white left wingers and nobody knew they were Jews. My thesis said... the African American community were not aware that the vast majority of the white people who were in their organizations were Jews. They were often left wing; they were gathering in churches. So that was the conclusion, really.” On the evolution of Sacha’s association of The Trial of the Chicago 7: “When I was a student, I studied Abbie Hoffman, amongst others, and Sacha Baron Cohen his role in the Black Civil Rights Movement. Cut to 13 years ago, I found out that Steven Speilberg is directing The Trial of the Chicago 7. Abbie of course is in it. I call up Steven Speilberg and I say can I audition? I had done Borat at that point, Sweeny Todd hadn’t come out. He said ‘listen, I’m a bit worried about the accent, it’s a really tricky accent. He said I’m going to give you my main dialect coach and you’re going to work with her for two weeks and after two weeks I want a recording of this speech.’ ....Every night for two weeks, I record three versions of this two minute speech. At the end, we had about 30 takes and gave the recording to Steven. I met up with him at his mother’s restaurant on Pico Blvd, called Milk and Honey and he said you’ve got the role. Unfortunately, then two members of the cast passed away, Heath Ledger and later Philip Seymour Hoffman; there was the writer’s strike; Aaron Sorkin was still the writer; and then the movie went through a bunch of directors Scott Feinberg until eventually I heard that Aaron was going to direct it.” Following Baron Cohen’s conversation with Feinberg, Aaron Sorkin presented Baron Cohen with the Outstanding Performer of the Year Award. Sorkin opened his remarks by saying, “Though the making of The Trial of the Chicago 7 was a long one, Sacha Baron Cohen was cast as Abbie Hoffman 13 years ago and by a different director, a man named Spielberg. 13 years and 32 drafts of the screenplay later, when Sacha heard that the film was happening, and that now I was the director, he got in touch with me and said I still want to play the part. He said more after that, but I didn’t really hear it. All I heard was that Sacha Baron Cohen wanted to play Abbie Hoffman. I don’t think I ever said the word yes, just hallelujah. It would be reasonable to assume that both Steven and I wanted Sacha to play Abbie because Sacha himself is America’s, Britain’s and the world’s preeminent provocateur and a fearless activist in his own right. But he was cast for a much simpler reason, he is a phenomenally gifted dramatic actor who would bring dimension to both the clown and the intellect of Hoffman, Abbie’s spirit and the spirit of the eight members of the Chicago 7 endured today. From the streets of Kenosha to Hong Kong to Echo Park, where just this week protesters are standing up for people who can’t stand up for themselves, I admire this Sacha Baron Cohen in a film still from The Trial of the Chicago 7 man for using his voice.” Upon accepting his award, Baron Cohen said: “Thank you, Aaron, for those incredibly gracious words. That was beautiful—maybe your best writing ever! I just felt it could have been a bit longer. But really, Aaron Sorkin is a true master of his craft – our greatest living screenwriter and a director who brings that writing to life like only he can.” Cohen continued, “In many ways of course, Chicago 7 and Borat could not be more different. Abbie was Jewish—one of the many courageous Jews who risked their lives for civil rights in the American South. Borat is a raging anti-Semite. Abbie stood up for democracy and against racism and injustice. Borat admires Donald Trump. On the set of Chicago 7, I got a trailer and craft services. On Borat, I was running away from the police. Still, even in these two very different movies, we see a common truth—the danger of lies and tyranny. In the Chicago 7, it was lies about the Vietnam War that cost the lives of so many American and Vietnamese. In Borat, it’s the lies of Trump—about COVID and the election—and the threat of Trumpism—white nationalism, and the targeting of ethnic minorities. That’s why I felt so compelled to make Borat—and to have it released before the election when maybe, just maybe, it could make a difference. Through it all…When I was being hustled out of Mike Pence’s speech at CPAC and questioned by the Secret Service…Or when that angry crowd at a gun rally chased me off the stage…I was inspired by Abbie Hoffman and the lesson of his life: That in the face of lies and tyranny, we cannot be bystanders. We cannot be silent. It’s why I believe that if Abbie Hoffman were alive today, he too would have refused to be silent. He too would have taken action—and used his humor—to try to prevent another Trump term that could have spelled the end of American democracy. So I want to dedicate this award to the life and legacy of Abbie Hoffman—may his memory be a blessing and an inspiration. And I dedicate this to everyone who refuses to be a bystander, who bravely uses the power of peaceful protest… When Black Lives are ripped away in America…Or when democracy is ripped away in Moscow, Myanmar, or Hong Kong. To these extraordinary people around the world – thank you for showing that we can all stand up for equality and justice—with bravery, tenacity, and, sometimes, even a bit of absurdity.” The Outstanding Performers of the Year Award recognizes select individuals who have distinguished themselves with exceptional performances in film this past year. Past recipients of the award include Adam Driver, Rami Malek, Margot Robbie and Allison Janney, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, Brie Larson and Saoirse Ronan, Steve Carell, Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence, Viola Davis, James Franco, Colin Firth, Penelope Cruz, Angelina Jolie, Helen Mirren, Heath Ledger, Kate Winslet, and Charlize Theron.

H
OSPICE OF SANTA BARBARA WORKS WITH INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES every day who are impacted by grief and trauma. We strive to provide compassionate care that resonates deeply to begin the process of healing in all the forms that may take. When we learn of instances of racism and hate, whether it is in our own communities or anywhere in the world, we feel the pain deeply as it is antithetical to everything we do and stand for as an organization. Whether it is in support of our Latino neighbors along our southern border, our African American brothers and sisters on the streets of Minneapolis, or ethnic minorities in Myanmar, we must stand against all forms of hate, oppression, and violence. Now, there is a renewed wave of racism against our Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) community that has taken the form of the bullying of children in schools, disrespect and violence against APIA citizens going about their daily lives, and most shockingly, the massacre of Asian American women in their workplace in Atlanta several weeks ago. More recently, hate crimes against the APIA elderly has been spiking across the country. At Hospice of Santa Barbara, we are saddened by this sharp rise in hate speech and hate crimes against the APIA community. We know that this hostility creates a loss of safety and interconnectedness for all of us. In just the David Selberg, past year, hate crimes CEO Hospice of SB targeting the APIA community have increased 150 percent. This has brought a heightened sense of fear and pain to members of our own APIA community in Santa Barbara. It’s depressing, sad and many of us feel helpless. As we collectively grieve and reflect on these tragedies, we believe that it is important that we ask ourselves what we can personally do to make a difference. During this time of broader crisis and trauma in our APIA communities, we must be guided by a compass of community compassion – and this can then take the form of action. We can reach out to those in need in our community and find ways to support them, educate others who let their racist stereotypes guide their thinking, speak out when we see acts of violence or hate, take a “bystander intervention” training class, ask APIA in our lives what we can do to support them, educate ourselves on the history of APIA discrimination in our country, and speak to our children about how they too can become part of the solution. We stand in solidarity with Asian and Pacific Islander Americans and offer our support. Hospice of Santa Barbara strives to be a welcoming organization that embraces diverse people, beliefs, and perspectives, with mutual respect both here and in all communities. We must all invest in long-term solutions that address the root causes of violence and hate in our communities. We invite you to join us in creating a community, and a country, that dismantles racism and is truly safe and welcoming for all.

Morning on Stearns Wharf, 36x18” by John Wullbrandt

Barn at Sedgwick Reserve, 36x18” by John Wullbrandt
I paint what I love. It’s my way of understanding and appreciating the beauty of my surroundings unrestrained by one particular style or conforming to one specific technique. Simple objects, beloved animals, local landmarks and breathtaking vistas compel me to mix colors and combine them onto canvas so that I may share my passion with you. I see, feel, paint, share, and Smile...

There’s So Much Happening...
Remembering Prince Philip’s visit to Santa Barbara PRINCE PHILIP (behind Queen Elizabeth) walking down the steps of the Courthouse during the March 1, 1983 Royal visit to Santa Barbara. Mayor Sheila Lodge is left of the queen, Supervisor Robert Kallman to the left of Prince Philip. It was a very rainy week, but there was a break here and thousands came out. They also visited the Old Mission and drove over gushing creeks to President Reagan’s Ranch for enchiladas. The royal yacht Britannia was left in Long Beach due to the weather and the arrival was in an Air Force DC-9 with a welcome at the Tracor Aviation hangar at the Santa Barbara Airport.

FOO FIGHTERS and VANS Off the Wall have picked JENSEN MUSIC in Santa Barbara in their latest fundraising “Foot the Bill” effort to help small businesses. “Jensen Guitar & Music Co. has always held a special place in my heart. Not only is it the shop me and my brothers learned how to play guitar in, but my brother Mike teaches there now. I have so many great memories of being in Jensen’s as a little kid...I’m so excited that Foo Fighters and Vans are lending a hand to help them get through a rough year,” shared Chris Shiflett, guitarist from Santa Barbara. Gianopoulos is currently the Composer-in-Residence for the Los Angeles-based Symbiosis Cedrick Berry Ensemble and concert series Music @ MiMoDa. “This concert - the music, the camaraderie we see between our musicians, and the joy they have in sharing the music they love with audiences, is palpable,” shared Symphony President & CEO Kathryn R Martin. “COVID is teaching all of us how much impact one person can make, and how our success is coming from ordinary people coming together to do extraordinary things.” Courtesy Photo

ELEBRATING COMMUNITY RESILIENCE WITH AN ALLAMERICAN PROGRAM, the Santa Barbara Symphony will continue its groundbreaking season of presenting live music together safely on stage Saturday, April 17th at 7pm (with an encore matinee on Sunday, April 18th at 3pm). The program features leading American composers including Copland, Barber, Ives, Pulitzer prize winner George Walker, Joan Tower, and the world premiere of the orchestral version of Polarity by local composer George N. Gianopoulos, dedicated to the Santa Barbara Symphony. “Originally composed as a response to America’s entry into World War II, Copland titled Fanfare to honor the common man, during those trying times. As we enter the second year of a global pandemic and recognize the resilience of our community and the impact we as an organization have had working together to continue playing music, this uplifting piece inspires unity and a call to action,” shared Symphony Music & Artistic Director, Nir Kabaretti. The Fanfare for the Common Man, that evokes the vast American landscape and pioneer spirit, will be recorded live, from the stage of the Granada Theatre, with no audience for this concert that celebrates American music and showcases a diverse range of composers and performers and builds upon the Santa Barbara Symphony’s commitment to spotlighting a range of symphonic music created in America. The program, curated and conducted by Kabaretti, will also include Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman by Joan Tower, which will uplift listeners and spotlight the Symphony’s heralded brass section. Joining the Symphony for this concert is Cedric Berry, a bass-baritone whose experience spans opera, Broadway, American songbook, jazz, and gospel. In addition to being a former Resident Artist with the LA Opera, he has performed with the Industry Opera, Long Beach Opera, Savonlinna Opera Festival of Finland, Banlieurs Bleues Festival of France, and the Ravinia

Don Pasquale and the Grandeur of Opera Review by Mark M. Whitehurst, PhD / VOICE

LARITY OF VOICE AND PRECISE ACTING held the audience captive as the egotistical Don Pasquale of Gaetano Donizetti’s comedic opera fails to control his destiny, in the opening performance of Opera Santa Barbara’s season. Sung in Italian with English subtitles, the production bloomed under the astute staging and scenic designs of Josh Shaw, who reinvigorated this comedy where the Don is transformed into a movie mogul from Santa Barbara, Donald J. Pasquale of the Flying P Studios. The scene is set in the 1920’s. Local soprano Jana McIntyre breathed life and emotion into her stunning performance as Norina. Bass Andrew Potter played Donald J. Pasquale with nuances of character that delighted the audience.

HarborVOICE By Sigrid Toye, Special to VOICE
OW IS IT POSSIBLE TO BE CATAPULTED from a sunny Spring weekend to the middle of June gloom within 24 hours? I’m told we’d better get used to the uncertainties of our planet’s crazy climate changes and Mother Nature’s emotional ups and downs. Nonetheless, the thick cloud layer and the heavy morning dew didn’t seem to dim anyone’s vacation plans. While walking along the breakwater, I stopped to chat with a couple of out-of-towners noshing on Sushi on the walkway and enjoying (yes, enjoying … despite the chill) the sea breeze and their proximity to the ocean. “You are so lucky to live here,” one said between bites of his California roll during our conversation. Yep, this is a fantastic place to live, despite the clouds, and... Summer’s comin’ soon! Often, I walk past the Santa Barbara Youth Sailing Foundation’s home base just inside the gate of Marina One, across the harbor walkway from the Yacht Club. Summer may be just around the corner, but the dock isn’t exactly in a holding position. At present, Spring sailing classes are underway for beginning sailors from age six all the way through high school, with boats atop the dock (and in the water) ready for service. Sailing programs are organized every year into seasonal sessions, Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters. The Spring and Fall semesters include organized after-school sailing instruction for both High School sailors and Optimist Fleet sailors (ages six to 18). The Summer Semester includes five, two-week sessions with morning classes for introduction to sailing and classes in the afternoon for more advanced sailing. Sailors interested in racing have the opportunity to participate in out-of-town regattas with their respective SBYSF Fleet throughout the year. The Santa Barbara Youth Sailing Foundation (SBYSF) has a large fleet of boats, starting with the Optimist fleet: 24 single handed sailing dinghies intended for kids up to age 15, and ten SailQubes, the newest, fastest, and the coolest polyethylene Optimist. Word has it that SailQubes are totally indestructible and ideal for beginning sailors! Additionally, the SBYSF’s fleet includes eleven CFJ sailboats for double handed more experienced young sailors and five Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs), a lightweight, high-performance unsinkable boat constructed with a rigid hull joined to side-forming air tubes. I’d say those are enough boats to accommodate the kind of sailing talent (too numerous to mention in this limited column) that has emerged from our shores! The current SBYSF Program Director Nick Kaschak came to Santa Barbara from the East Coast and was raised between Rhode Island and San Diego. How’s that for a climate contrast? During high school on Point Loma, he earned the titles of High School Fleet Race National Champion and Snipe Junior National Champion, plus a bronze medal at the Snipe Junior World Championship. UCSB was his next stop where he was named three-times All Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference Skipper and helped to lead the Gauchos to multiple post season competitions. After graduation from UCSB and two prominent coaching positions, the Youth Foundation in our beautiful Santa Barbara harbor is now his home, where he’s assisted by an excellent team of coaches. “Sailing is a sport that transcends age,” he shared. “With the same enthusiasm you can see a kid competing with a grandfather. This is a sport that teaches critical thinking skills, self reliance, cooperation, and sportsmanship. Whether on an Olympic level or just cruising for fun, sailing stays with you for life!” With summer coming soon, there is still time to sign up for sailing instruction, although it seems the programs are selling out fast. Scholarships are available through the generosity of the Santa Barbara Yacht Club Women’s fund raising efforts. Info can be found at: www.sbysf.org. More exciting harbor centered events are beginning to take place with the reduced COVID restrictions, so stay tuned...

Economic VOICE Job Openings Highest in Two Years By Harlan Green / Special to VOICE
J
https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?id=NEWORDER,#0
OB OPENINGS IN THE U.S. ROSE IN FEBRUARY to the highest level in more than two years as the economy emerged from a winter slowdown tied to a record increase in coronavirus cases. The number of job openings jumped to 7.37 million from 7.1 million in January, the Labor Department said last Tuesday. “Job openings now top prepandemic levels and aren’t far from the record high of 7.57 million in November 2018,” said MarketWatch’s Jeffry Bartash. “Many companies are looking to hire more workers in anticipation of the economy strengthening as most of the American populace gets vaccinated.” This is a further sign (with last Friday’s U.S. employment report) that we could return to some form of full employment by the end of this year. Both U.S. manufacturing and service sectors are expanding faster. American manufacturers’ Institute of Supply Managers (ISM) index hit a 38-year high, another economic indicator pointing to gathering momentum in the U.S. economy. Timothy R. Fiore, CPSM, C.P.M., Chair of the Institute for Supply Management® (ISM®) Manufacturing Business Survey Committee said, “The manufacturing economy continued its recovery in March. However, Survey Committee Members reported that their companies and
suppliers continue to struggle to meet increasing rates of demand due to coronavirus (COVID-19) impacts limiting availability of parts and materials.” The Institute for Supply Management said its manufacturing index jumped to 64.7 percent from 60.8 percent in the prior month. Readings over 50 percent indicate growth, and anything over 55 percent is considered exceptional. Job openings increased in health care and social assistance (+233,000), accommodation and food services (+104,000), and arts, entertainment, and recreation (+56,000); but declined in state and local government education (-117,000), educational services (-35,000), and information (-34,000). I close with a short note by Professor James Galbraith, son of John Kenneth Galbraith, the best-selling author and defender of FDR’s New Deal. In speaking of inflation worries over the huge recovery and proposed infrastructure spending of the Biden administration, he said: “Short of that (an outright war with China), U.S. households are not suffering from a shortage of smartphones, dishwashers, and running shoes. What they lack is confidence and security…Yes, some (of the spending) will be spent on services that were missed over the past year, reviving jobs in those sectors to a degree. Some will be used for housing maintenance, repairs, or upgrades—expenses that were neglected when people feared incurring the extra cost of a plumber, electrician, or painter. And some will go toward building new houses, as is already happening.” These are all good reasons for spending huge amounts of money on reviving the U.S. economy and jobs, in other words. Controversial Solutions for California’s Housing Supply Crisis
I
19
Local News for a Global Village | www.VoiceSB.com
By Brian Johnson, 2021 President, SBAOR
N 1916, Berkeley, largely considered California’s most progressive city today, enacted some of the first zoning ordinances that had the effect of segregating the wealthier populations of Berkeley away from the poorer ones. They restricted the construction of multifamily housing in residential neighborhoods. It treated apartment renters as second-class citizens. Restrictions like this spread throughout California and the rest of the country and made Brian Johnson, impacts that are still felt today. Recently, Berkeley joined SBAOR President Sacramento and other places outside of California like Minneapolis and Portland to end exclusionary zoning and eliminate the singlefamily housing designation for land. Berkeley’s efforts aim to allow up to four units of construction on land that was previously restricted to single-family construction. Proponents of these types of measures say that it will do more to battle the housing supply crisis, reduce the cost of construction and address the disparities in housing affordability that have plagued communities for decades. Opponents say it will permanently alter the character of neighborhoods, lower property values and accelerate gentrification. Local arguments could give way to statewide and even nationwide concerns, however. Recently, the Biden Administration released their $2 trillion infrastructure plan. Contained within the proposed legislation is a $5 billion plan that would incentivize local governments to alter their zoning laws to loosen single-family restrictions across much of their cities. The plan would allow cities to receive grants that would help pay for new schools, roads and bridges if they agreed to loosen zoning laws. Nothing in the bill would force a city to change their zoning rules. In California, an approach like this might not be enough. Critics of the legislation say that too many of California’s most exclusive enclaves have little need for Federal funds and would, therefore, have little incentive to change their exclusionary ways. California’s State Legislature is considering new rules such as SB 9 that could achieve the same goals. The proposed State Senate bill would allow for duplexes on single-family zoned lots or even allowing lot splits without a hearing or approval from local governments. A lot of opposition for bills like this one come from local governments who are afraid of losing power. However, unless and until those same governments show they are willing to work towards more supply these bills will continue to be considered. In the end, our State will continue to face a housing crisis unless we can truly get creative on solutions. The ideas mentioned above may not end up being the best way to achieve that goal but if we want to have more housing, especially more affordable housing, then increasing the supply of housing is the best way to proceed.

Santa Barbara International Film Festival
The Amazing Outstanding Directors of the Year By Robert F. Adams / Special to VOICE
Courtesy Photos
C
ELEBRATING FOUR OF THE OSCAR-NOMINATED BEST DIRECTORS during a key livestreamed evening of this year’s virtual Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Hollywood Reporter awards columnist Scott Feinberg welcomed the exceptional talents in a round-robin virtual discussion on April 6th. Beaming in from the El Encanto, A Belmond Hotel, Feinberg had informed questions for each of the guests, who joined the discussion from their own sequestered locations via computer cameras. There was broad participation this year and SBIFF virtual audiences were lucky to see all of these filmmakers who included Chloé Zhao for Nomadland, David Fincher for Mank, Lee Isaac Chung for Minari, and Thomas Vinterberg for Another Round. In keeping with the longstanding format, each filmmaker discussed their work one-on-one with the host, with each interviewee being a Best Director Oscar nominee. First up was the most awarded and recognized director this year and a favorite to win an Academy Award, Chloé Zhao (The Rider) for her personal film Nomadland chronicling the journeys of those who live in their RVs in the western region of the USA. A very grounded and fascinating film, the story shows what it is like to be free, struggling economically, and driving to where the jobs are for temporary employment postings. The film celebrates the deserts and canyons of the Southwest as well as the remarkable stories of resilience that emerge. Zhao was proud to be so appreciated this year. Born in China, she went on to study with Spike Lee at NYU. About her film she mentioned, “I did not seem connected to New York, where I lived, so I moved to the heartland, South Dakota. I was lucky to work with Frances McDormand, playing Fern, and I found her to be completely authentic. Making the film with her helped me build a world and go to the peripheral edges of society.” She added, “My favorite part was the editing, and I enjoyed problem solving in the process. I wanted the audience to take away their own conclusions from the film… especially in their encounters with our capitalist economy and choices they make.” There is a remarkable shot at the conclusion that is a sly homage to the legendary director John Ford in his film The Searchers as well as other memorable landscape shots of the American West. A meticulous filmmaker, the exceedingly thoughtful director David Fincher (Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) was interviewed next, mostly discussing Mank, a formidable fictional narrative of the making of Citizen Kane based on a screenplay written by Fincher’s father, Jack Fincher. A showpiece of a biographical fictional exploration, much of the film follows historical and real-life screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and his encounters with the studio figures of Hollywood’s 1930s era. Shot in Black and white to echo Citizen Kane itself, the film, as is typical for David Fincher, is layered in masterful technical details, costumes, dialogue, and visual and sound touches that evoke this time period of Hollywood’s past. Fincher often gathers the most accomplished filmmaking teams in the mainstream film industry. His films are superbly cast and Mank is no exception, featuring standout performances by all the
actors, even in the smallest of roles. Years from now, film buffs will be watching the fascinating performances including those from the leads Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried. Fincher mentioned, “My father’s Citizen Kane script was anachronistic and the challenge was to make sense of the stylized dialogue, if somehow I could trap it. I knew that if we could make film like it was made in that period, the film would be more embraceable. As a director you have to avail yourself of technique to make your point and launch the dramatic levers.” Lee Isaac Chung followed, who wrote and directed Minari, about an immigrant South Korean family that establishes a foothold on a farm plot in Arkansas, taking place in the early 1980s. The film has a universal tone and signals an experience that many have known, as waves of immigrants in the USA have established the melting pot of our society and economy. The film’s casting is remarkable with Steven Yeun and Youn Yu-jung both nominated for acting honors for the upcoming Oscars. The film won the Grand Jury prize at last season’s Sundance Film Festival and won a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language film (since it uses subtitles). An authentic story of assimilation, audiences have appreciated the attention to small details in a family group reaching for stability. Chung stated, “When I wrote the script, I became very personal with it, looking at my own memories. All Minari’s characters are part of me and my main objective was that my daughter would understand how I grew up... I wanted to make a film that would capture what I saw when I was young.” Thomas Vinterberg, an accomplished director from Denmark (The Hunt) was up last for his brilliant drama Another Round. With subject matter looking at aging and the ability to find rewarding pathways in the middle-aged years, this film has an absorbing ensemble of actors with characters that try an outlandish approach to find an uplift out of their personal doldrums. The madcap dance scene at the conclusion features a moving performance from the veteran actor Mads Mikkelsen. Vinterberg’s personal voyage in making his film was emotionally riveting as he lost his beautiful teenage daughter in a car accident four days into production. According to Vinterberg, “The actors and crew brought me through that tough time, and the film reflects that rawness. The film is straight from heart. There was no alcohol allowed on set, we did not want people to drink, work 12 hours, and drive a car. There was no rehearsal, but the cast and I spent a week
together drinking including watching footage of drunken Russian.” He added, “I hope and wish our film will help put Danish cinema on the map, the Oscar nominations mean so much to me (Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Foreign Film).” During the evening’s interviews, most of the directors seemed to be sitting in libraries, alone, with plenty of books in the backgrounds. Fincher humorously quipped, “directors never really meet…. but actors connect all the time. They are in the traveling circus, but we usually are cloistered.” After the individual interviews, a fascinating discussion ensued between these top-notch
directors and the knowledgeable host Feinberg, all of whom expressed their admiration for each other’s work in the year of the pandemic. According to Festival Director Roger Durling,“In this past difficult year, these four exemplary storytellers showed us ways to dream and reevaluate our perceptions of the world at large. They’re all rewriting cinema history, and lucky for us we get to hear them converse with one another.” Robert F. Adams, a Santa Barbara landscape architect, is a graduate of UCLA’s School of Theatre and Film, as well as Cal Poly. He has served on the film selection committees for the Aspen Film Fest and the SB International Film Festival. Email him at robert@earthknower.com

Marymount’s Virtual Auction Supports School Community Through Pandemic
W
ITH A PALPABLE SPIRIT EMANATING FROM THEIR LIVE YOUTUBE BROADCAST on March 13th, Marymount of Santa Barbara’ s annual auction, Magic of the Night, (virtual this year), was a lively, creative celebration. “Saturday’s auction was a year to the date we closed, and getting our community back on campus starting in late August was nothing less than extraordinary,” Chris Broderick, Head of School said. “The ability to keep our amazing students and teachers safely back on campus throughout this unprecedented year is truly something to celebrate.” The event honored this accomplishment by sprinkling in a selection of fun video tributes from teachers and students as well as a powerful rendition of Seasons of Love from the musical Rent. The school updated the lyrics to tell the story of Marymount’s year and asked families, students, trustees, faculty, and staff to join together in the musical tribute to a year truly “measured in love and patience.” The final production “told a story of our community that we will never forget and always cherish.” Proverbial Auctioneer & Broadcast live from the Marymount Tea House, the auction featured Master of Ceremonies Andrew Firestone enticing items such as unique one of a kind art, trips to Mammoth and Cabo San Lucas, and collections of fine wine, garnering over 100 viewers. Marymount parent, Andrew Firestone, and Broderick co-hosted the evening and were joined by a local magician, who peppered in entertaining tricks throughout the event. Oku Head Chef and Marymount parent, Koji Nomura donated and prepared delectable three-course meals for all attendees, including a meal for all teachers and staff. The evening raised over $250,000 for the school. “All of the proceeds will directly serve our community and our signature curricular programs in meaningful ways,” Andrea McFarling, Director of Development said. “From supporting our extraordinary faculty to continuing to provide the additional support and resources needed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our fundraising ensures we continue to lead as a school that prioritizes the importance of academic excellence through the lens of social and emotional wellness for all of our students and staff as we keep our school community thriving on a secure and safely open campus.” In a demonstration of appreciation to the faculty, attendees could also purchase raffle tickets with the name of a teacher to be entered into a teacher raffle, which included gift-cards to local businesses and more. “We’re blown away by the enthusiastic support,” Broderick said. “These proceeds will all go directly toward supporting our people and keeping our school the resilient beacon of hope it is. At Marymount, we provide student-centered, individualized learning in a joyful and nurturing community, inspiring academic excellence and valuing difference. The education for each Marymount graduate is to empower individual potential, inspire purpose beyond self, and cultivate social responsibility as they prepare for high school and beyond.”

A conversation with the Director
An Elegant, Light-Filled Vision at SBMA KEEN CURIOSITY has been growing in art lovers throughout the community in anticipation of the re-opening of new gallery spaces at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Larry Feinberg, SBMA’s Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Director, was happy to take a few minutes to share the Museum’s stellar news with VOICE. One of the first tidbits of info, was that the date for a re-opening is not yet quite set. “We have a target date for opening at the end of July or early August... We’re feeling very happy and excited at this moment. The renovation is virtually done,” he said. According to Feinberg, some of the delay in opening has come from fine tuning the heating and air conditioning units. With the stewardship of priceless art and artifacts at stake, it’s a requirement before the installation of exhibitions can begin. “When we re-open this summer it will be the Museum’s 80th Anniversary and we want to show off the collection. Almost everything on view will be works from our own collection,” he added. With the completion of a new contemporary art and a new photography gallery, there will be more space than ever for the collection to shine. “More of the Museum’s Larry Feinberg, Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Director collection will be up than ever before,” the proud director noted. He also added that the new heating and cooling system will provide better ventilation... also a consideration after a year under COVID Another renovation highlight, new oak floors throughout most of the Museum, in this case, the restrictions. McCormick Gallery When the opening finally reveals the results of the months and years of effort that have revisioned and renovated much of the Museum’s exhibition space and provided important infrastructure upgrades such as the new Art Receiving Facility including a loading dock and freight elevator and art storage areas, visitors are likely to be wowed with the new developments. “People will see that the Museum itself, too, looks grander, with a new gravitas that it didn’t have,” Feinberg commented. “We’ve raised ceiling heights in some cases... added a new grand staircase... added back arches that used to be there when it was a post office.” All this has added “height and elegance.” Visitors will see the grand staircase through the left arch and will immediately become aware of the second floor, and at some points see all the way up to the skylights on the top floors. It offers a “soaring effect.” For purists, the Museum’s new LED lighting offers illumination that is more “pure... not golden or bluish.” Rounding out those details, new oak floors have been installed throughout the Museum, except in Ludington Court and the atrium where limestone with little fossils is used to add a “rather organic quality.” After the re-opening during the Rendering of Ludington Court summer and the Museum’s 80th Anniversary celebrations, and when post pandemic life is getting back to normal, the long awaited Van Gogh exhibition (originally set to open a year ago) will be a highlight of late February 2022. Well before then, the Museum will officially have completed its renovations. There’s a lot to look forward to. The Capital Campaign that has been going for several years, that has funded the recent upgrades, is reaching it’s goal for the first two of its five stages. So far, the Museum has raised almost $47 million of its $50 million goal. When that is reached, like in the renovation, everyone will take a break. “We’re moving down the stretch in our funding...it’s a very good position,” Feinberg noted. Looking forward to the Museum’s re-opening, he shared, “I hope that the public is beginning to get excited themselves and enthusiastic... about the Museum and the coming years.” The new Candace Dauphinot Grand Staircase adds to the grandeur. Created with limestone which on close examination incorporates fossils, it also adds an organic feel.
