Brooks presents When Worlds Collide: Fracking and Community in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico on Thursday, May 14th at 5:30pm in the Presidio Chapel at El Presidio de Santa Barbara in a joint collaboration between UCSB History Associates and the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation. Brooks, a historian and author, was drawn into this collision after the Bureau of Land Management announced in July 2012 a two-week public scoping period for its decision to fulﬁll its mandate under the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 to “explore for and develop oil and gas resources on public lands through a competitive leasing process” on 343,439 acres in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico. Included in these lands were 13,300 acres on the Cebolla Mesa, in the heart of the 2 million acre Rio Chama Basin. “The residents of Abiquiu asked for my help in resisting fracking in the valley,” Brooks shared in an email interview. “I have been writing the history of New Mexico for more than 20 years, and the Chama Valley is important to that story, since it features the village of Abiquiu (best known as where Georgia O’Keeffe lived), but also with a fascinating history in the colonial era.” With Brooks’ help, the more than 100 citizens, largely from the village of Abiquiu, began working to prevent fracking in their area, mounting a successful “cultural defense” of water rights in the region. “We built a broad base of support across groups often antagonistic to one another — Indians,

Perhaps they were able to work together despite differences, because what was at stake is so important, water. “Water — in New Mexico as well as California — is our most precious resource,” Brooks emphasized, “and fracking permanently poisons up to 3 million gallons per well.” As a result of community response, the BLM deferred action in February 2014, “pending further analysis.” At the Presidio Chapel on Thursday, Professor Brooks will discuss this work. Brooks, an award-winning historian, rejoined the UCSB faculty in the History and Anthropology Departments after serving as President of the School for Advanced Research in Santa Fe. He has held appointments at the University of Maryland and UC Berkeley, and currently serves as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Western National Parks Association, which supports research, preservation and education in 67 National Parks, including Channel Islands National Park. For over ﬁfty years the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation (SBTHP) has worked to protect, preserve, restore, reconstruct, and interpret historic sites in Santa Barbara County. Founded in 1963, SBTHP operates El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park under a unique agreement with CA State Parks. SBTHP strives to encourage community involvement and foster an appreciation for Santa Barbara County’s distinctive history. www.sbthp.org.
