Rob Fredricks, Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara CEO, and Randy Rowse, Santa Barbara Mayor, greet young students
“We are really proud of what we’ve created with our Early Explorers Preschool, which offers a one-of-a-kind preschool experience for children that is rich with handson learning, provides kinder readiness, and most importantly is at the Zoo!” said J.J. McLeod, Director of Education at the Santa Barbara Zoo. “Children are surrounded by wildlife that they get to learn about, visit regularly, and develop a natural appreciation for their conservation. Where else do you get to hear the roar of a lion while you’re at school?”Using a play-based approach that centers on teaching through experiences, the Early Explorers Preschool aims to cultivate appreciation for the natural world in each of its young participants. Children garden, play outside, and explore with a student-teacher ratio of six to one, enjoying walks around the Zoo, art, Zoo train rides, and lessons on sustainability. In grouping three to five-year-olds together, the program supports the development of strong social and academic skills.
ENCOURAGING CHILDREN TO LEARN, PLAY, AND GROW AMONG NATURE, the Santa Barbara Zoo’s Early Explorers Preschool has received its official license from the State of California, making it the first licensed outdoor preschool in California. Launched two years ago, the preschool offers an early education program designed to best serve children between the ages of three to five.

Speaking of sailing clubs, I’m reminded that there are two in the Santa Barbara Harbor, but only one with that name - the Santa Barbara Sailing Club (SBSC). Although recognized today as the SBSC, that wasn’t the case in 1959 when a group of yachtsmen recognized the need for an organization devoted to one class racing, naming their club the Small Sailboat Racing Association. An Inaugural Regatta was held in the fall of 1959 with a turnout of 57 boats, after which the Racing Association’s activities and membership grew in leaps and bounds. Within a short period, the club built its first boat storage yard on Leadbetter Beach Road. Under the leadership of Commodore Gordon Butcher in 1961, the Association joined with other clubs to compete with the Santa Barbara Yacht Club for the Adams Trophy. Since each participating yacht was required to fly the club’s burgee during the race, Commodore Butcher’s wife Betty hastily designed and fabricated one. I’m told that very same blue and white design fashioned 61 years ago crowns the Breakwater Flag Project’s third flagpole today! When the City of Santa Barbara began to extend Shoreline Drive, the boat yard was moved to the expansive area in the harbor complex where it remains today; a rather nice piece of real estate for boat storage with a short hop to the boat hoist located on the harbor’s main dock. Commodore Jack Nerdrum succeeded in obtaining an Affiliate Membership in the Southern California Yachting Association, thus enabling members to race with other recognized yacht clubs. On the 6th of May, 1965, the club was incorporated, changing the name to Santa Barbara Sailing Club. The organization’s format was extended to include an active inter-club racing program to accommodate all levels of racing skills and inclinations. SBSC stages several annual regattas including the upcoming Goblin Regatta held on Halloween, and is co-sponsor with the Pierpont Bay Yacht Club of the Hardway Race (around Santa Cruz Island), as well as its collaboration with next-doorneighbor, the Santa Barbara Yacht Club (SBYC).The first competition for the Adams Trophy was only the beginning of a long-standing partnership between the two organizations. During the yachting season, the SBSC joins the SBYC for weekly Wet Wednesdays and the popular Goleta Beach Race. This weekend on Saturday, August 27th, the 2022 Goleta Beach Race, Cruise & BBQ will take place. Brad Schaupeter, SBYC’s Race Director, explained, “The Goleta Beach Race has been a collaboration between the SBSC and the SBYC for several years with the Yacht Club starting and finishing the race and the Sailing Club hosting an amazing on-shore BBQ at Goleta Beach.” He added, “We will be attempting to add a race back following the BBQ for those that want to participate. Cruisers, racers, and members of both clubs are invited and encouraged to join in, even if driving by road to get there.” The thing is that race registration begins at 6am! It might be best for me to join in the fun with the Drive by Road option … The Santa Barbara Sailing Club continues to be an active and congenial group who believes sailing is more fun as a group activity and promotes racing as a means of improving seamanship and sailing skills. Stop by this Saturday at the harbor or Goleta Beach to watch this exciting race!
By Sigrid Toye, Special to VOICE WALKING ALONG THE BREAKWATER ON A HAZY AFTERNOON, I wondered how many visitors actually notice that not all the flags on the jetty are rectangular. The first three flags at the west end of the breakwater are triangular in shape, also known as burgees by the organizations they represent. Burgee, according to Professor Google, is defined as “a flag bearing the colors or emblem of a sailing club, typically triangular.” Now how’s that for a scholarly clarification?

Mayten Tree Bark byPhotos GressDavid
By David Gress / Special to VOICE HE MAYTEN TREE is a perfect solution to the search to find a small- to medium-sized tree that does well in our area and that also carries the grace and beauty of a Weeping Willow. Mayten Tree is stunningly beautiful in the landscape - with its pendulous branches covered with glistening, lacy green, leaves that sway gracefully in the breezes. It has the added beneficial characteristics of being evergreen, low-maintenance, and essentially disease- and pest-free, and of requiring much less water than a willow! Mayten Tree was introduced to California in San Francisco in 1878 and was available in Santa Barbara before 1900. While it is considered slow growing, its growth rate and ultimate size can vary greatly depending on water availability. Locally, at maturity it usually develops a rounded crown with a height and spread of 20 to 30 feet. Its shiny green leaves are elliptical in shape (1- to 2-inches long and ¼- to ½-inch wide) and finely serrated along the edges. These are simple in form and are arranged alternately along the long narrow branchlets that hang downward from the larger branches. On some trees the leaves are held out perpendicularly to the branchlets, while on other trees they are angled downward.Mayten Tree is monoecious, meaning both male and female flowers occur on each tree. Flowers appear in the spring and are yellowish green, quite small (3/16-inch in diameter), inconspicuous, and form in axillary clusters of two to five flowers. The flowering is very inconsistent; some trees rarely or never produce flowers. After pollination, the flowers produce fruit that forms as yellow bivalve capsules (¼-inch long), which contain two seeds covered by a red fleshy aril. Birds love to eat them. Mayten Tree can sprout up easily from seed; however, it has not been found to be invasive in our area, most likely due to our drier climate.
The trunk is slow to add girth. Branching can be rather open, yet graceful, until the tree reaches some maturity. Afterwards, the canopy thickens to provide generous shade. The bark is light gray and smooth when young, becoming fissured into rectangular flakes with age. Mayten Tree does best when planted in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. It can grow in all types of soil but will perform much better in deep well-drained soil. Its roots are not invasive (like a Weeping Willow’s) but will tend to develop root suckers in shallow soils or if the roots are damaged in some way. Deep and infrequent irrigation during the dry season should encourage deeper rooting and reduce root sprouting. It does require pruning when young, in order to develop good branch structure; thereafter, only minimal pruning is required or recommended. It is cold hardy to 20 F. Mayten Tree is endemic to South America. Its native range includes the arid and semi-arid regions west of the Andes in Chile and east of the Andes from Argentina extending into Peru andItBolivia.isamember of the Celastraceae (also called Bittersweet) family. The botanical name for the Mayten Tree is Maytenus boaria. The genus name, Maytenus, comes from the word “manatum”, which is the indigenous Mapuche people’s name for the tree. The specific epithet, boaria, comes from the Latin word “boarius”, meaning “of cattle”, and refers to the fact that in its native habitat the tree’s foliage is a favorite food of Maytencattle.Tree has many practical purposes.

During times when grass is scarce, such as in a chilly winter or during droughts, the foliage is cut to provide fodder for cattle and sheep. Young, tender, leaves are eaten by the indigenous people for food and are used by them in traditional medicine to reduce fevers and headaches. It is planted extensively to encourage reforestation in its native range. Its hard, dense, wood is preferred for making tool handles. The oil from its seeds is used in cooking and in the production of varnishes.Despite its utilitarian uses, in the garden Mayten Tree is a decorative asset in our landscapes, whether planted as an elegant specimen tree or as a lacy screen. The selected cultivar, ‘Green Showers’, is a hardier, more-vigorous form that carries slightly larger leaves and has a more robust appearance; it is propagated asexually by cuttings, so its genetically superior characteristics are the same in each tree. Mayten Trees can be seen at the southeast corner of the Santa Barbara County Courthouse (two mature trees), near the northwest corner of Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden (three young trees), and at UCSB on the north side of Noble Hall. It can also be seen growing in many private gardens.
Tree-of-the-Month articles are sponsored by Santa Barbara Beautiful, whose mission includes increasing public awareness and appreciation of Santa Barbara’s many outstanding trees and, in a longtime partnership with the City Parks & Recreation Department, the funding and planting of trees along the City’s streets. Those who wish to honor a special someone can do so with an attractive commemorative marker that will be installed at the base of an existing street tree in the City of Santa Barbara. Because Santa Barbara Beautiful has participated in the planting to date of over 13,000 street trees, there are plenty of trees from which to choose! receives an NSF CAREER Award to predict how climate change will affect El Niño By Harrison Tasoff The UC Santa Barbara Current T A blob of warm water covers much of the central and eastern Pacific Ocean in this satellite image of the 2015 El Niño.

One goal is to develop recommendations for improving models and forecasting in a way that incorporates climate change. “It would be great if we could just figure out which models were right about ENSO and climate change,” Stevenson said, though she suspects this may take more time and a hard look at the atmospheric factors. She also wants to determine if there are things we can measure now that could provide insights on conditions at the end of the century.
Stevenson plans to begin sorting this out by focusing on the models themselves, looking at how they’re constructed and why there’s a discrepancy between the predictions they yield. She will start by looking at oceanographic factors. “It’s something that nobody really had the time to do in a dedicated way before,” she said.
The El Niño-Southern Oscillation, abbreviated to ENSO, is a 3- to 7-year variation in the surface temperature of the equatorial Pacific Ocean. El Niño years see warm surface water in the central and eastern Pacific (American west coasts), while this warm water shifts to the western Pacific (toward Indonesia) during La Niña years. In neutral years water temperatures are fairly consistent across the equatorial Pacific. This cycle has a profound influence on weather patterns, particularly in the regions surrounding the Pacific Ocean. In California, for instance, the high water temperatures of El Niño bring rain storms, while drought often accompanies the chilly conditions of La Niña. ENSO influences the location and severity of events like typhoons, floods, droughts, heatwaves and more. It also affects marine conditions like algae blooms, animal distributions and ecosystems such as coral reefs and kelp forests. So far, climate models have helped scientists and meteorologists forecast ENSO’s effects on a yearly basis. But the situation gets complicated when they look to the future. “Ever since there have been climate models that could represent El Niño, none of them have agreed on how climate change is going to affect variability of the tropical Pacific,” Stevenson said. Climate models are complicated, and there are hundreds of changes between subsequent generations. “It’s not a clean experimental setup,” Stevenson said, “because we’re changing so many things across all the different models.” With so many variables in flux, it’s impossible to tell what factors are most important to get right in order to bring the models into better agreement.

HE LITTLE BOY OF CHRISTMAS OR “EL NIÑO DE NAVIDAD,” the fishermen called it: a period of unusually warm water in the eastern Pacific that typically peaks around December. The South American pescadores may not have known back in the 1600s what caused this phenomenon, but they would certainly have noticed its effects on the weather and sea life. Indeed, El Niño can affect weather across the globe, so understanding how this pattern will fluctuate in a potentially much warmer future is critical. However, this question has frustrated scientists thus far, since climate models don’t even agree on whether El Niño will become more or less pronounced as time goes on. Fortunately, UC Santa Barbara’s Samantha Stevenson has received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award to investigate how climate change will affect these events. The roughly $880,000 grant will fund five years of research.

“Some of the models are saying El Niño will strengthen, and some of the models are saying it won’t,” said Stevenson, an assistant professor at the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management. “We want to know why.”
Stevenson plans to hire a rotating group of masters and undergraduate students to work on training and educational materials. Right now, there are very few intermediateskill tutorials for working with climate models. She aims to put together a set of online tutorials that people can use either as self-guided exercises or incorporate into classrooms. They will combine short videos and interactive coding material somewhat similar to existing data science boot camps, but with a focus on climate modeling techniques.“Thisproject will allow us to be more confident in future projections of El Niño’s characteristics,” Stevenson said, “and, in turn, create more reliable assessments of future climate-driven risks.”
The CAREER Award will fund one postdoctoral researcher and two Ph.D. students for five years to assist in this endeavor.

The book also examines intolerance from multiple angles. Junior not only experiences prejudice from his white classmates for his heritage, but is bullied by people on the reservation for being born with hydrocephalus, stunting his growth and impacting his vision. Ultimately, Junior’s perseverance earns his new classmates’ respect, and his experiences emphasize the value of treating all individuals withYetacceptance.ashebuilds these relationships, Junior is threatened with losing his best friend, who sees his transfer as a betrayal to the reservation. Through this subplot, Alexie thoughtfully examines the struggle young Indigenous Americans face in understanding their identity within larger American society. As Alexie grew up on the Spokane Indian Reservation, much of the novel is partially auto-biographical, lending it a distinctive personal tone.
Readers benefit from this insight as Alexie crafts a novel that ultimately emphasizes the value of celebrating identity, friendship, and life in the face of hardship and grief. As high school students search for back-to-school reads, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is a worthwhile addition to any reading list.
THE MOST FREQUENTLY BANNED AND CHALLENGED BOOK from 2010 to 2019 as reported by the American Library Association, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie boldly confronts the socioeconomic issues Indigenous American communities face. Published in 2007, this coming-of-age story follows Arnold Spirit Jr., a 14 years-old Indigenous American boy, as he begins attending a predominantly white school outside the Spokane Indian Reservation in Washington. While Junior navigates this new environment and discrimination, he realizes that his move has sparked controversy within his own community, prompting him to reflect upon his identity. Best suited for high school students and up due to its serious subject matter, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is as intimate and engaging as it is important. As efforts to ban and censor books increase nationwide, and readers prepare to observe Banned Books Week from September 18th to 24th, the novel remains vital in broadening readers’ perspectives and understanding of ongoing conversations on equity. Written in a diary format filled with cartoon illustrations, Junior’s youthful yet profound narrative voice explores a myriad of complex issues with humor and sincerity. Economic inequality remains a major theme of the book, as Junior is motivated to attend Reardan High upon realizing the reservation’s textbooks had not been updated in 30 years. He largely hitchhikes the 22 miles to school due to lack of gas money. Repeatedly, Junior’s dilemmas ask readers to reflect on how his community’s life would be changed if the reservation had more resources and the same opportunities available as the neighboring, wealthier, communities.

“The infrastructure bill widely focuses on improving passenger and freight transportation, for instance, so steel and material suppliers, including companies that produce materials for buses, trains, bridges, rail, or related equipment, could see heavy activity. Makers
“All of that’s good news for manufacturers who are already experiencing high demand, which could “continue on for months, if not years, going forward,” David Zrostlik, president of Stellar Industries, recently said in the Wall Street Journal. The bill will also improve workers’ productivity by modernizing our transportation networks as well.

U.S. INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION IS THE HIGHEST SINCE 2018, continuing its climb from the two-month 2020 recession (gray bar in graph). Automobile production highlighted the surge. This is huge, folks, and a sign that GDP growth in the third quarter may be positive after the first two quarters of negative growth in 2022. Capacity utilization rebounded to 80.3 percent in July from 79.9 percent in the prior month. Output of the U.S. industrial sector was at an all-time high, above the level hit in 2018. Why the manufacturing surge now? President Biden’s $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill includes funding allocations of $89.9 billion to improve public transit, $65 billion toward better internet connectivity and access, and money for 500,000 electric vehicle charging stations, which could help address charging “deserts;” areas where it isn’t currently available.

U.S. Manufacturing rose 0.7 percent in July after falling in the prior two months. Motor vehicles and parts output rose 6.6 percent after a 1.3 percent fall on the prior month. Excluding autos, total industrial output increased 0.3 percent. Auto assemblies were the highest since August 2020. Utilities output fell 0.8 percent in July. Mining output, which includes oil and natural gas, rose 0.7 percent, the third straight solid gain. As important in bringing down oil prices was that oil and gas drilling is at a sevenyear high. U.S. crude oil prices have dipped below $90 per barrel of late, and who knows how much lower they may decline?Prices could ease further if Iran agrees to a new draft nuclear agreement after it backed off from its demand that the Islamic Revolutionary Guards be removed from the U.S. terrorism list, reports the New York Times, opening a potential of at least one million more barrels a day of Iranian petroleum exports (which would make up for the loss from the end of U.S. Petroleum Reserve contribution in November).

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24TH - A survey will be going out in Santa Barbara County to see what needs, beyond funding, are necessary to meet the demands of food programs for seniors and the disabled. The move comes after the Board of Supervisors received an update on Tuesday on the nine meal providers offering services countywide. Currently there are about 2,400 clients being served each week. Delivery services proved especially vital during the pandemic, as many food insecure individuals could not easily leave their homes. In December 2020, $200,000 in county funds supported services as the need for home deliveries increased. The information gathered from the survey released this fall will inform Supervisors’ understanding of future needs for supporting services and the food insecure.

By Kerry Methner / VOICE VER THE SPAN OF THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS, the team at Waterhouse Gallery has developed a rhythm... alternating occasional themed or group exhibitions, like small works, with exhibitions focusing on two artists. As that pattern played out, it became history, a series of two person shows, in a regular beat... new work arriving, brimming with vitality and excitement, glowing in the light of the intimate two-person focus. This month, work by Nancy Davidson, a Santa Barbara native who graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in studio art, and Dr. Craig Nelson, Executive Director of the School of Fine Art Painting at Academy of Art University in San Franscico, takes center stage in an exhibition that opens August 27th. Davidson cast her eyes to Santa Barbara’s beaches for inspiration. “I am Santa Barbara born and bred so, they are all places near and dear to my heart. For me, they are more than images. They are memories and I love to share them,” she related. This is a long held theme in Davidson’s work, who noted she has been concentrating on local coastal scenes for the past decade. “It seems that the more I paint, the more ideas I generate, so I really can’t stop myself,” she shared. “The possibilities are endless.”Thistime of year is a great time to paint outside. “Light is everything,” she added. “The image may be a beach, but the actual subject is light and how it defines form and color and evokes a mood. I love late summer light and especially late autumn light. The color is warmer and the shadows are longer, which create great design opportunities.”

Surf’s Up by Craig Nelson
“I have been an educator since 1974, and it has definitely influenced my work and still does,” Nelson explained. “I constantly paint with students and experiment with technique, color, composition, style, and mood, all of which continually influence what I do. I learn a lot and often apply it to my current work...the enthusiasm of students are a great source of inspiration. I have been told by fellow artists that my work has changed... I hope for the better!”

Butterfly Beach by Nancy Davidson
Nelson’s work may be recognized by its luminous color. He travels far and wide, often with students in tow, to capture the light, movement, and color of a particular location and moment. For this exhibition, he included travels to many Santa Barbara locations, from State Street to Hendry’s Beach, to the Courthouse and Montecito. “The focus of my work at Waterhouse is basically the theme of ‘Everything, Santa Barbara’... with a few variations,” he shared in an email interview.
He is also working on personal projects, “dealing with music - jazz singers of the 50’s and the pillars of early rock and roll... no time frame, just enjoying working on them.” Enjoy the rhythm and vision of these gifted paint dancers as their visions play off each other starting Saturday and through the month of September.

Daybreak Ledbetter Point by Nancy Davidson
Nancy Davidson
Nelson also has a history that encompasses time as an illustrator, and he has “painted constantly since 1970.” While Davidson focuses on light and the Santa Barbara waterfront, Nelson is currently engaged with “the surface quality of the paint,” as well as, “the physical texture of the paint and how it relates to the subjects that I portray. I like the viewer to appreciate the image from a distance and enjoy the paint qualities upon closer observation.”
