TWYLA THARP has choreographed more than 160 works since graduating from Barnard College in 1963: 129 dances, 12 television specials, six movies, four full-length ballets, four Broadway shows and two ﬁgure skating routines. She received a Tony Award, two Emmy Awards, and 19 honorary doctorates. Tharp founded her dance company, Twyla Tharp Dance, in 1965. In addition to choreographing for her own company, Tharp has created dances for The Joffrey Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, The Paris Opera Ballet, The Royal Ballet, New York City Ballet, The Boston Ballet, The Australian Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, 50th Anniversary Tour Dancers Roka The Martha Graham Okamoto and Matthew Dibble Dance Company, Miami City Ballet, Paciﬁc Northwest Ballet, Atlanta Ballet and Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Ballet and dance companies around the world continue to perform Tharp’s works. Tharp published her autobiography, Push Comes to Shove, in 1992. She went on to write The Creative Habit: Learn it and Use it for Life, followed by The Collaborative Habit: Life Lessons for Working Together.

To participate as a performer in The One Hundreds, you must be available on Saturday, October 10th at the following times: 10–10:30am (Check in at kiosk); 10:30–12:30pm (Rehearsal); 2–3pm (Call back/Pre-show prep); 3pm (Performance). The Minimum age to particpate as a dancer is eight. Wear comfortable clothes that you can move in. The performance and rehearsal will be held outdoors in Alameda Park. Participants should be able to be comfortable being outside an extended period of time. Bring sunscreen and/or a hat and a blanket or chair for breaks. Bring a picnic or plan to purchase lunch at one of the adjacent businesses during the break. Inspired by legendary baseball player Sandy Koufax, Tharp noticed that each baseball play took approximately 11 seconds. She then began crafting her own 11-second phrases, culminating with her creation of The One Hundreds, a dance that has received critical acclaim and has become a core part of Tharp’s educational and training programs. The Public performance is free and open to public observation. Co-presented with Santa Barbara Dance Alliance, Santa Barbara DANCEworks and the UCSB Department of Theater/Dance.
