Meet Roman Baratiak, UkraineFest Emcee

PERFORMING IN THE STREET and solidarity sparkling in the air, Roman Baratiak, a loved and respected face at UCSB Arts & Lectures for the last four decades preceding his recent retirement, will be back in front of the mic as emcee for Thursday’s UkraineFest.

The Festival, which runs from 5 to 7:30pm prior to the long awaited Santa Barbara premiere of DakhaBrakha on October 6th, will delight those who are not familiar with Ukrainian culture as well as those who regularly enjoy its arts and texture.

Greene to create an authentic cultural introduction.

The Festival will include Siuzanna Iglidan, on bandura, demonstrating “the national musical instrument of Ukraine,” samples of authentic Ukrainian costumes and embroidery from a variety of regions of the country, demonstrations of traditional doll-making, Easter Egg dyeing, and wreath making, as well as information about local organizations such as Direct Relief that are assisting the people of Ukraine in the face of the Russian initiated war.

Baratiak was born in France to Ukrainian parents and moved to the U.S. as a two-year-old, settling into a Ukrainian community in Chester, Pennsylvania, where he spoke Ukrainian as well as English.

“The name of the country kind of translates

to ‘Borderlands’ because it’s always been on the border of empire,” Baratiak explained in a conversation about the festival and state of his parents’ homeland. That borderland location has added flavor to the culture. “It’s where East and West meet. It has all sorts of historical cultural influences, from the ancient Scythians to the Slavs, to the Greeks who had settlements along the Black Sea, and the Vikings who founded Kyiv,” Baratiak

THECROWNING FINALE TO AN EVENING OF UKRAINIAN CULTURE, UCSB Arts & Lectures will present DakhaBrakha at the Granada Theatre at 8pm on Thursday, October 6th in conjunction with 1st Thursday and a UkraineFest from 5 to 7:30pm.

With roots sunk deep in Ukrainian folklore and folksong, as well as theatre, and a good sampling of indie rock, pop, and hip hop, DakhaBrakha is an entrancing high-energy powerhouse that reaches deep and captures attention and then hearts.

Weaving ancient folk melodies into a subversive musical tapestry, DakhaBrakha creates a world of unexpected new music with avant-garde and traditional instrumentation from around the world.

From Kyiv, DakhaBrakha has honed an evocative musical approach that “brings a beguiling blend of music from an anguished nation” (The Boston Globe). Prepare yourself for a sonic feast that celebrates the spirit and determination of Ukraine.

DakhaBrakha was created in 2004 at the

Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art “DAKH” by avantgarde theater director Vladyslav Troitskyi and given the name that means “give/take” in the old Ukrainian language. Theater work has left its mark on the band’s performances – their shows are always staged with a strong visual element.

After experimenting with Ukrainian folk, the band incorporated rhythms of the surrounding world into their music, creating their bright, unique, and unforgettable sound. They strive to open up the potential of Ukrainian melodies and to bring them to the hearts and consciousness of the younger generation in Ukraine and the rest of the world.

Accompanied by Indian, Arabic, African, Russian, and Australian traditional instrumentation, the quartet’s astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range creates a transnational sound rooted in Ukrainian culture. At the crossroads of Ukrainian folklore and theater, their musical spectrum is at first intimate then riotous, plumbing the depths of contemporary roots and rhythms, inspiring cultural and artistic liberation. Since the 2022 war began, they’ve also rallied spirits and support for Ukraine around the world.

In March 2010, DakhaBrakha won the prestigious Grand Prix prize named after Sergey Kuriokhin, in the sphere of contemporary art, and confirmed its place in the culture once again. In March 2011, DakhaBrakha was discovered by Australian Womadelaide and began their ascent in the international music scene. They have since played more than 300 concerts and performances and have taken part in major international festivals throughout Eastern and Western Europe, Russia,

Asia, Australia, and North America.

The quartet includes: Marko Halanevych, vocals, darbuka, tabla, didgeridoo, accordion, trombone; Iryna Kovalenko, vocals, djembe, bass drums, accordion, percussion, buhay, zhaleika, piano; Olena Tsybulska, vocals, bass drums, percussion, garmoshka (Tsybulska is a specialist at the folklore department of the National University of Ukraine); Nina Garenetska, vocals, cello, bass drum. Vladyslav Troitskyi, director, ideologist, and founder, rounds out the group.

“All sorts of cultures passed through or settled in Ukraine. It has a kind of multi-ethnic quality. It has the richness and complexity of different cultures and different histories that have influenced that particular region,” he added. “It also borders the Carpathian Mountains, on the western side, and on the other side, are Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania... and all of them have their own unique traditions and histories. So it’s also been very contested, it is a very rich country with the black soil of Ukraine, with the wheat and the sunflowers, and it used to have major energy resources there as well. So whenever conflict started, just like the Nazis did, they headed through Poland and then into Ukraine because they wanted to capture the resources there, in the land.”

But imagine what it’s like to have a neighbor, a giant, huge neighbor next door, which is constantly meddling in your affairs, that doesn’t want you to be a successful democracy, doesn’t want you to have a functioning civil society, views you as ‘not a real nation….’

That multi-stranded complexity of people, languages, and cultures soon was reflected in the people living on a cross-roads including significant Jewish and Tartar influences. “It’s has a very rich history of people who struggled for their independence and their freedom for a very long time,” Baratiak noted. Ukraine also has many dark chapters in its history including the horrors of the holocaust and the Holodomar famine.

Ukraine has been a sovereign country for just 31 years - a very short time. “Today’s country was birthed from the collapse of the Soviet Union,” Baratiak explained. “So it

They’ve really struggled to maintain their independence. What they’re wanting is to join the European Union and be accepted as a Western European country. That’s how they view themselves. They want to get away from the colonial power Russia, which doesn’t want to admit that. And so I think Americans need to kind of look at the Ukrainian struggle as people who believe in the values that we have here in the United States: freedom of assembly, freedom of speech, freedom to live your own life as best you see fit. They want to live that way. And they don’t want to fall under the yoke of Russia. And that’s a threat. And frankly, Ukrainians are sacrificing and dying for Western values and they need assistance in order to withstand the repression that they feel is going to be inflicted on them by Russia.”

BUBBLE WRAP. SUNLIGHT. STAYING UP PAST YOUR BEDTIME. These are just three of the joyful, life-affirming experiences that make up the list at the heart of Every Brilliant Thing, performed at Center Stage Theater last weekend by its co-creator and original actor Johnny Donahoe. Presented by local nonprofit New Beginnings, the oneman play provided audiences with an interactive, uplifting experience that explored the nature of loving and supporting an individual living with depression.

tied to the human experience. His positive demeanor ensured that the play provided a hopeful experience that centers on the message that life does get better.

Humor emerged as a key element, as Donahoe worked with the audience to transcend the traditional boundaries of oneman plays and craft an unrepeatable night. Prior to the play, Donahoe visited with attendees, distributing slips of paper with list items for people to shout out, and asking if certain individuals would be comfortable playing more active roles in the show.

The premise for Every Brilliant Thing is as difficult as it is hopeful. Embodying all of the boyish energy and uncertainty of a child, Donahoe starts the play from the perspective of a seven-year-old boy who has just been informed by his father that his mother is in the hospital following an attempted suicide. Determined to help his mother realize all of the wonderful emotions and experiences that make life worth living, he begins writing her a list of “Every Brilliant Thing.”

This interactive aspect breathed wit and unpredictability into the night, diffusing dramatic tension by emphasizing that Every Brilliant Thing is not so much a play as it is a shared conversation. One audience member found herself suddenly playing the role of Donahoe’s school counselor, having to take off her sock to create a “sock dog” character for their session. Another attendee played Donahoe’s first girlfriend, finding herself acting through endearingly awkward stages of young love.

Audiences follow Donahoe as he cyclically abandons and returns to his list as he attends university, falls in love, and grows up. As items evolve from the likes of “things with stripes” to intangible experiences such as “getting gifts you wanted but didn’t ask for,” it becomes increasingly apparent that the list is as much an act of self-preservation for Donahoe as it is an attempt to help his mother.

Ultimately, Every Brilliant Thing provided Santa Barbara audiences with a powerful reminder that while depression remains an aspect of many people’s lives, there are resources and support available — along with thousands of “brilliant things” to experience.

New Professors Join Westmont College Faculty

FIVENEW PROFESSORS JOIN THE RANKS OF FACULTY MEMBERS welcoming students back to Westmont College campus this fall. All tenure-track, the college’s new members include Isaac Gomez, Jennifer Ito, Ruth Lin, Siegwart “Zig” Reichwald, and Guang Song.

ISAAC GOMEZ (Kinesiology) is currently finalizing his doctorate from the University of Oregon. A local to the area, Gomez is an alumnus of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He studies how individuals’ brains control movement, using behavioral testing, transcranial magnetic stimulation and electromyography. Ultimately, he intends to apply this research to children learning new motor skills.

JENNIFER ITO (Physics) joins Westmont after helping build millimeter-wavelength telescopes as part of the Simons Array in Chile. In doing so, Ito and her colleagues intend to study what she refers to as “the cosmic microwave background, thought to be remnant radiation from the Big Bang.” She hopes to involve Westmont students in analyzing the data collected from the telescopes. She will also use Westmont’s Keck Telescope and anticipates working with the Santa Barbara Astronomical Unit. Ito earned her doctorate from UC San Diego.

RUTH LIN (Music) will lead the Westmont Orchestra and chair the music department. Previously, she directed the Gustavus Adolphus College Symphony Orchestra in St. Peter, Minnesota, for over ten years. She has already begun building connections and relationships in the local music community and looks forward to working with her students. Lin earned her Doctor of Music in orchestral conducting from Northwestern University School of Music.

SIEGWART “ZIG” REICHWALD (Music) will be Westmont College’s new Adams Professor of Music and Worship. In this role he will be part of the college’s chapel team and teach History of Western Music, and shared that he looks forward to working with students who wish to discover “has been and still is an essential means of giving voice to the human experience.” Reichwald earned a doctorate in musicology and a Master of Music in orchestral conducting from Florida State.

GUANG SONG (Computer Science) joins Westmont after teaching computer science at Iowa State University for 16 years. His research has centered largely on computational biology, exploring how proteins move and their molecular mechanical systems, in addition to classifying their shapes. Song earned his doctorate from Texas A&M University.

Down Syndrome Association of SB to Present 2022 Extraordinary Educator Award RECOGNIZING

THE KEY ROLE LOCAL EDUCATORS PLAY in supporting students with Down syndrome and others with special needs, the Down Syndrome Association of Santa Barbara County will present its 2022 Extraordinary Educator Award to Dos Pueblos High School Culinary Arts Teacher, Chef Terri Ingram. The presentation will occur during the organization’s 11th Annual Hoedown, held at the Santa Barbara Carriage Museum from 5 to 9pm on Saturday, October 1st.

As Dos Pueblos’ Culinary Arts teacher for 11 years, Ingram has consistently helped students feel included launching a Coffee Cart and the SpEd Café at Dos Pueblos. SB Unified Cuts Ribbon on Five New Monroe Classrooms

ELEMENTARY STUDENTS WILL BENEFIT FROM FIVE NEW CLASSROOMS this school year, as celebrated by an official unveiling held on Friday, September 16th, by the Santa Barbara Unified School District. The project, which began in the summer of 2021, was complete before start of the 2022-2023 school year, expanding the space and resources available to the campus.

“This is a moment to pause and celebrate, as one of our facilities got a major upgrade due to the commitment of not only the Monroe community, but also taxpayers with their support of the bond,” said SBUSD Superintendent Dr. Hilda Maldonado. “Our mission is to provide our staff and students the most optimal places to learn, so that they can innovate and push us forward. Projects such as these provide the comfort that they need to do just that, and I’m grateful to a community that continues to understand that.”

The project two-building project cost $3.67 million, and is a part of Measure J funding approved by voters in 2016. This measure is a $58-million bond measure, focused on improvements for SBUSD elementary schools.

The morning was co-hosted by Superintendent Dr. Hilda Maldonado and Monroe Elementary Principal Brian Naughton. In attendance were Virginia Alvarez, Kate Ford, and Laura Capps of the SB Unified Board of Trustees, while Elizabeth McGillivray of McGillivray Construction and Joe Wilcox of KBZ Architects spoke of their involvement. Carola Smith Named Vice President of SBCC School of Extended Learning

CAROLA SMITH has been selected to serve as the Vice President of Santa Barbara City College’s School of Extended Learning. Smith assumes this position after acting as its Interim Vice President for close to a year. She has been with SBCC for over 25 years, working with programs such as Study Abroad, International programs, Business, and Media Arts. She was also a faculty member in SBCC’s School of Modern Languages, English as a Second Language, and Work Experience and Personal Development departments. Smith earned her bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and teaching certificate from UCSB.

DONNA RONZONE is the newest member of the Santa Barbara Education Foundation’s Board of Directors. Ronzone previously worked for 14 years within the SB Unified School District, serving as Principal of Roosevelt Elementary School, Director of Visual and Performing Arts, and Director of Assessment and Accountability. Ronzone holds her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, a master’s in Library & Information Science from Drexel University, and a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education and an elementary teaching credential from St. Joseph’s University.

Hundreds Support International Relief Organization at “An Evening to Experience ShelterBox”

OVER200 COMMUNITY MEMBERS UNITED IN CELEBRATING AND SUPPORTING SHELTERBOX’S VITAL WORK at the organization’s “Evening to Experience ShelterBox” event on September 15th. This marked the return of the nonprofit’s annual Tacos and Tequila event after a two year pause amidst the pandemic.

ShelterBox provides emergency shelter and other essential household items to people displaced by catastrophic disasters, like hurricanes, typhoons, earthquakes, and floods, as well as in prolonged conflict and war zones. Currently, Shelterbox is actively serving communities affected by the war in Ukraine, flooding in Pakistan, and drought in Eastern Africa.

“There are more than 114 million people around the world who have been forced to flee their homes by disaster and conflict, more than any time in recorded history. And

that number is only growing due to climate changedriven storms that are becoming more severe and further increasing global displacement,” said ShelterBox USA President Kerri Murray.

The night was hosted at John McGovern’s Summerland home, and emceed by KEYT reporter John Palminteri. McGovern received ShelterBox USA’s 2022 Community Partnership Award for his consistent support as a volunteer and host of the nonprofit’s benefit on four prior occasions.

Guests enjoyed a hands-on experience with the humanitarian organization’s aid items, including relief tents and shelters, solar lights, tools, cooking sets, sleeping mats, mosquito nets, blankets, and more. They were also able to meet ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) members, volunteers who deploy to the frontlines of disasters and crises.

“The Book Den is a full-service book store that carries both new and used books and sells books world-wide through our own website and many other websites,” states Eric Kelley, who has owned The Book Den since 1979. The store was founded in Oakland, California, in 1902 and moved to its Santa Barbara location in 1933.

Judge Approves $230 Million Settlement for Fishing Industry Members And Shoreline Residents Damaged By Plains All American Pipeline’s 2015 SB Oil Spill

FINALAPPROVAL OF A $230 MILLION CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT rising out of Plains All American Pipeline’s 2015 Refugio Oil Spill off the coast of Santa Barbara has been granted by Federal District Court Judge Philip S. Gutierrez. Announced last week, the approval will let the settlement administrator begin processing and paying claims submitted by affected fishers and property owners. This settlement was achieved by Class Counsel Cappello & Noël LLP, Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein LLP, Keller Rohrback LLP, and Audet & Partners.

The 2015 oil spill was the result of failed maintenance and extensive corrosion along the Plains-operated pipeline, with Plains being found criminally liable in 2018. The spill dramatically harmed the local fishing industry, and impacted coastal properties between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles Counties. This civil settlement was reached as the involved parties prepared for a civil jury trial originally slated for June 2022.

The approved settlement includes $184 million to be awarded to fishers and processors who worked in the spill’s affected areas. $46 million will be distributed to property owners and lessees of affected properties. The amounts, net of attorneys’ fees, costs, and administration expenses, will be distributed to class members who timely submit claims, based on a court-approved distribution plan.

Individuals who believe they may be eligible may contact the court-appointed administrator, JND Legal, to obtain further information about the settlement, determine whether they are members of the class and, if so, submit their claim forms. The deadline to file a claim is October 31st, 2022.

WEDDING, Diane Senami Nacouzi realized that there were no local salons that offered the African hair braiding styles she has loved since childhood. Now, Nacouzi has filled this gap in local hair care by opening Ayoola Braiding Bar, offering braiding services, natural hair treatments, and more. With styles available for women, men, and children, Ayoola Braiding Bar provides a distinctly personal hair styling experience.

“I enjoy the challenge and [creating] different styles the customer requests,” shared owner Diane Senami Nacouzi, explaining that she loves observing clients’ “transformation” as their hair enhances their natural beauty. “Seeing a smile on their face gives me great satisfaction.”

Originally from the Republic of Benin, Africa, Nacouzi grew up surrounded by braiding. She began developing her personal braiding skills from a young age, practicing styles on family and friends. Eventually, she moved to the United States and studied data analytics at General Assembly San Francisco.

Yet Nacouzi grew increasingly inspired to pursue her love for braiding. She started gaining professional salon experience by assisting various stylists and salon owners, building a background in working with clients who are multicultural, providing hair treatments, and offering hair consultations.

In launching her own local salon, Nacouzi looks forward to sharing her passion, experience, and styling skills with Santa Barbara community members of all ages, hair types, and backgrounds.

“I hope to introduce people to African hair braiding, natural hair treatments, and different styles,” said Nacouzi, who plans to host community events. “In the future, I would like to teach and show people from different walks of life the art of African hair braiding.”

Ayoola Braiding Bar clients experience an intimate hair styling experience. The one-room salon features just two chairs, with gold hummingbird ornaments and palm frond wallpaper creating a welcoming, artistic environment. Clients can choose from a varied selection of braid styles, including knotless braids, box braids, micro braids, single braids, and more. Locs services and cornrow styling are also available, with Fulani braids, Ghana cornrows, and Bantu knots offered. All styles’ prices are determined by braid size and the client’s hair length.

Beyond these styles, Ayoola Braiding Bar provides twist services, including Senegalese twists and Nubian twists. Nacouzi also provides natural hair services such as hot oil treatments and deep conditioning, in addition to hair consultations. The salon also sells a number of hair care products to support healthier hair.

“I hope people will be happy with their new look,” said Nacouzi. “I hope it helps them to be more confident and bring out the creativity in them. I feel that a happy client is not just a return client, but also generates more clientele.”

Bookworm Corner: The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Stories

COMBINING FAIRY TALES WITH A HEAVY DOSE OF IRONY, it is an understatement to say The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales is far from your average children’s book. The work of author Jon Scieszka and illustrator Lane Smith, this 1992 picture book revels in bending and breaking the rules of one of storytelling’s oldest genres: the fairy tale. The result is a hilarious collection of stories that will engage even the most reluctant of young readers — and provide teachers and parents ample teaching opportunities to discuss literary devices.

CREATIVELY

Narrated by Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk, The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales includes twists on classic tales such as “The Really Ugly Duckling” (who grows up to be an even uglier duck), and “The Stinky Cheese Man” (who, unlike the Gingerbread Man, no one chases due to his stench).

Throughout the book, Jack consistently breaks the fourth wall by directly addressing readers and different characters within the various stories he is trying to control. This not only heightens the book’s hilarity, but also teaches readers about the role of perspective when Jack’s nemesis, the Giant, suddenly emerges to express his dislike of the story “Jack’s Bean Problem.”

Given the familiarity of these fairy tales, young readers are easily able to detect where each story goes awry, letting them explore the concept of re-interpretation and subverting expectations. Jack’s character openly discusses what a fairy tale typically includes, such as starting with “once upon a time” or featuring symbols like the “sly old fox.” As the book’s creator, Jack also plays with the book’s structure, “forgetting” to insert the table of contents at the beginning and moving up the book’s end pages to “trick” the Giant into thinking the book is over. These moves help teach readers about how books are traditionally formatted, and contribute even more irony.

Above all, The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales is a fun, silly read. Its sarcasm and wit lend it an originality that will entertain readers of all ages, and may even inspire students to create their own “fairly stupid tales.”

Stearns Wharf to Celebrate 150 Years!

CELEBRATING

150 YEARS ON THE WATERFRONT, Stearns Wharf merchants, with some added help from the Santa Barbara Yacht Club, will host an entire day of exciting activities and events on and near the wharf on October 8th.

“This should be an amazing, fun filled celebration!” exclaimed Neil Bruskin, Merchant Association President.

Stearns Wharf is more than a nice place to watch boats or fish, it’s a structure that changed the face of Santa Barbara …. literally! One and a half centuries ago the city was an isolated pueblo surrounded by mountains and defined by the ocean. Until the railroads arrived in the late1800’s, Santa Barbara was only accessible by water. When a ship did arrive – always a sometime thing – its cargo had to be either tossed overboard to float its way to shore or loaded into small boats and rowed ashore. That apparently applied to people too!

A funny, yet true, story is one regarding the sailors who ferried passengers to shore. It appears that the crew made a habit of stopping just short of where waves began to roll under the skiff asking the travelers for a hefty tip. If insufficient gratuities were presented there was a good chance that the boat would “accidentally” turn sideways in the rough waters and the unsuspecting travelers and their baggage would get drenched or even dumped overboard. Naturally the sailors enjoyed a few chuckles as they headed back to their ship watching the frugal passengers – and their luggage - get soaked to the bone!

The Santa Barbara Yacht Club (which is also celebrating 150 years) will join in the celebration with a ceremonial Parade of Fleet. They invite the local fishing fleet and all other boats in the harbor that wish to participate to join in as well.

Stearns built the wharf in 1872 he not only opened the door to large-scale commerce and trade but opened the city to growth, introducing Santa Barbara to the world! Since that time Stearns Wharf has served as the city’s front door and the birthplace of its industries as well as the community’s number one visitor attraction. Over its 150 years, the wharf has been battered by storms, scorched by fires, even damaged by a water spout; nonetheless it continues to offer something no other place in the city can …. a living testament to Santa Barbara’s diverse and rich history.

The Stearns Wharf restaurants, joining the fun, will hold friendly competitions from noon on to see who serves the best clam chowder - with free tasting to lucky participants who might have an opportunity to grab a few of the winning coupons offered by the establishments. Another well known attraction, the Doublewide Kings, will take over the bandstand at 4pm with their uniquely tweaked blend of original music and cover tunes of roots-rock, Americana, countryblues, and the glory days of 70s FM radio.

Starting at 12pm until 4pm, all of the Restaurants (Char West, The Harbor Restaurant, Moby Dick, and Santa Barbara Shellfish Company) will be offering a free taste of their versions of Santa Barbara’s best Clam Chowder. As the day draws to a close, beginning at 5:30pm, Santa Barbara’s favorite historian and emcee, Neal Graffy, will begin a formal program by regaling the crowd with salty stories of the wharf’s colored past. There will be a brief convocation by local dignitaries followed by a great big birthday cake and a humongous toast.

Last but not least, as an end to a fabulous all day festival of joy and celebration, a fireworks display honoring our beloved wharf will conclude the celebration. All in all, I’d say that qualifies as bonafide Santa Barbara style.

In celebration of Stearns Wharf’s birthday, the Santa Barbara community is invited to join in the October 8th festivities that include activities for all ages, free music presentations, a visit by a tall ship, cannon fire, a formal event by elected officials and city leaders, and fireworks.

The festivities will begin on a high note at 11am with a stirring performance of operatic favorites by Opera Santa Barbara. I’m told that the tall ship Mystic Whaler will be prowling the waters around that hour and word is there may be an exchange of gunfire with the wharf cannon.

Around 2pm, the Santa Barbara Yacht Clubs’ fleet will appear in celebration of Stearns Wharf, as well as their own, 150th year in a ceremonial Parade of Fleet.

“We have had a long time collaboration with the Yacht Club and it’s an honor to celebrate our birthdays together,” Bruskin shared.

“Visitors will also be treated to Tequila Mockingbird [a local band] dishing up their signature interpretation of the best classic and modern rock, blues, funk, and groove

Community Kicks Off Santa Ynez Valley Trail Restoration Efforts

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27TH - A new plan is underway to restore a series of trails in the Santa Ynez Valley for walking, biking, and horseback riding. County leaders and the community are collaborating. Many of the trails were covered up in recent years. Volunteers are needed for work projects coming up on Saturday, October 1st and October 8th.

Supporting the efforts are Santa Barbara Bucket Brigade volunteers.

“We’re not just here to build a trail, we’re not here to restore a roadway, we’re here to reconnect this community,” said Bucket Brigade founder Abe Powell.

City Puts a Hold on Parades on State Street

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21ST - NO parades on State Street in Santa Barbara for the near future as the promenade remains in place. Santa Barbara City leaders looked at long range plans, other route options, and parklet fees during Tuesday’s City Council meeting. Santa Barbara Police Chief MaryLinda Arroyo voiced concerns about public safety with the presence of parklets.

David Bolton, First Vice President of Old Spanish Days, said attendance was down for this year’s parade on Cabrillo.

“It wasn’t ideal. It looked nice, there were palm trees. There were issues getting to the parade.We estimated our attendance was down 25 percent-30 percent of what it normally is,” remarked Bolton.

MORTGAGE

RATES ARE ON THE MARCH AGAIN, but so are homebuyers. How long must prospective homebuyers wait when average conforming 30-yr fixed rates topped 6.29 percent, per Freddie Mac, and the Fed says they may push up rates even further?

Fixed conforming mortgage rates dropped below five percent for the first time in 2009, per the FRED graph that dates back to 1971, yet home buyers kept buying as the economy recovered from the Great Recession and busted housing bubble as well.

They are buying again after the big rise

in interest rates engineered by the Federal Reserve. Why is it such a surprise? Rates are still low historically, though home prices have surged in the double digits because of the prolonged decline in interest rates during the pandemic.

One reason for the buying surge? “Most of the country saw modest improvements in homebuyer affordability for the third straight month because of slightly lower mortgage rates amidst steady income gain growth. The healthy labor market continues to be a positive for the housing market, despite ongoing economic uncertainty and high inflation,” said Edward Seiler, MBA’s Associate Vice President, Housing Economics. “Higher mortgage rates have reduced borrowers’ purchasing power since the start of the year.”

The latest existing- home sales rate dropped slightly to 4.8 million annualized, which is actually on a par with average home sales since the Great Recession. It dipped below four million during the last two recessions. Whether home buying continues might depend on how much higher interest rates climb.

“The housing sector is the most sensitive to and experiences the most immediate impacts from the Federal Reserve’s interest rate policy changes,” said NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun. “The softness in home sales reflects this year’s escalating mortgage rates. Nonetheless, homeowners are doing well with near nonexistent distressed property sales and home prices still higher than a year ago.”

Both purchase and refinance applications increased in the last week per the Mortgage Bankers Association indexes, up one percent and ten percent, respectively. Socalled Jumbo conforming rates were slightly better. For homes sold for over $647,200, the average rate for the 30-year was 5.79 percent. The

Sansum Diabetes Research Institute’s Gratitude Gala Raises Over $717,000 for Diabetes Research

CELEBRATING

100 YEARS SINCE THE LIFE-SAVING DISCOVERY OF INSULIN, community members gathered to support the Sansum Diabetes Research Institute at its Gratitude Gala on September 10th. Hosted at the Hilton Beachfront Resort, guests enjoyed an elegant cocktail reception, dinner, a live auction, live music, and dancing to commemorate SDRI’s founder, Dr. William Sansum, and the organization’s ongoing efforts to support individuals living with diabetes.

The Gala ultimately raised over $717,000 dollars, with all proceeds being allocated to furthering SDRI’s mission of providing research, education, and care to the lives of people impacted by diabetes. The evening and auction was emceed by Andrew Firestone, with live music provided by the Jackson Gillies Trio, Jineanne Coderre, and Downbeat LA.

“SDRI is profoundly grateful for the generosity and support of our community at the Gratitude Gala,” said SDRI Executive Director Ellen Goodstein. “Not only was the Gratitude Gala a celebration of Dr. Sansum’s incredible legacy in diabetes research, but it was also an opportunity to share the groundbreaking work SDRI has accomplished, and continues to accomplish, to improve the health and lives of those impacted by diabetes both locally and globally.”

Guests mingled, enjoyed a delicious catered Mexican dinner by Chiltepin Catering, a lively auction of donated gift items, and dancing to favorite musical selections. Attendees included members from combined Santa Barbara Sister Cities, many of whom will be attending the November Santa Barbara Puerto Vallarta Sister Cities trip to Puerto Vallarta to celebrate the groups’ 50th Anniversary working together.

The Santa Barbara/Puerto Vallarta Sister Cities Committee program is a direct cultural and social exchange between Santa Barbara and Puerto Vallarta, established in 1972 through the efforts of local city officials and interested citizens and includes countless programs of community outreach and cooperation. The program is a living legacy left by the late President Dwight D. Eisenhower who conceived the program and initiated it in 1956.

The grass-roots strength of the Sister City movement rests on the people-to-people programs, and the direct contact activity of the individual Sister Cities. Over $30,000 was raised throughout the past year to support the Volcanes Food Bank that supplies meal ingredients to over 500 families that have been economically devasted by loss of tourist related jobs due to the pandemic.

MOMENTS OF SHARING, REFLECTION, AND CELEBRATION filled Plaza del Sol when the Heroes of Hospice of Santa Barbara Luncheon returned to Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort last Thursday. Themed “What Matters Most,” hundreds of community members united to raise approximately $180,000 for HSB, as well as honor the vital work of the 2022 Heroes of Hospice: Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics, Santa Barbara High School, and HSB’s Bereavement Services Staff.

Rolf Geyling, President SB Rescue Mission, shared his personal experiences with grief after the death of his eight years-old son, Rudy, and his wife’s ALS diagnosis and death. HSB helped Geyling and his family in the following months, helping them process and support each other.

“We feel so fortunate to be able to return back to an in-person gathering with all of our supporters, the people that make our work possible,” said David Selberg, CEO of HSB. “As an organization, all our services are free to the community and it’s events and folks like this that make that possible.”

Entering attendees were welcomed by the chance to support HSB via an extensive silent auction. For close to 50 years, HSB has supported individuals facing a terminal illness or struggling with grief, including services for children and teenagers.

Masters of Ceremonies Beth Farnsworth and CJ Ward greeted all with humor before the afternoon’s “What Matters Most” programming began, inviting all to consider what they value.

Guiding this personal reflection were three special guest speakers, presented by HSB event committee member Jesse Brisendine. Author and shared death experience expert William Peters explained how his surviving a skiing accident helped him understand

Speaker Mari Hernandez was also supported by HSB after her 17 years-old son, Andrew, took his life in 2018. She shared her journey of founding the nonprofit Vida Center, which provides mental health support and awareness to teenagers, families, and the community.

Finally, it was time to present the awards to the 2022 Heroes of Hospice. Santa Barbara High School received the Partnership Hero Award for its ongoing collaboration with HSB to provide counseling services for students on campus.

“We, Santa Barbara High, should be giving the award to Hospice — they are our heroes,” said Dr. Elise Simmons, SBHS Principal. “Without their partnership, our students, families, and staff would not benefit from thousands of hours of support and care.”

Dr. Charles Fenzi, former SBNC CEO, praised HSB’s guidance in helping physicians learn how to communicate with their patients following a difficult diagnosis.

“Hospice of Santa Barbara has been very instrumental in helping us understand how to have that conversation, and particularly how important it is to be able to have that conversation before the end of life,” said Dr. Fenzi.

The HSB Bereavement Staff received the Staff Hero Award, with each counselor present standing to be recognized and applauded by attendees.

“I can speak for many of our Bereavement Service team members as I say that our work at Hospice of Santa Barbara has been the most important and fulfilling of our careers,” shared Michael Cruse, HSB Bereavement Service Manager.

A Collage of Contemporary Art at SBMA

DISCOVERING OPACITY IN AN OFTEN CRISP AND OVERLY DEFINED WORLD, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art will open its doors to multiple exhibits displaying a fascinating spectrum of contemporary art during October and through the new year.

As the city’s fine art anchor, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art has placed contemporary art front and center. They have announced five upcoming exhibitions.

The Architecture of Collage: Marshall Brown opens October 2nd and runs through January 7th, 2023. It will be followed by Scenes from a Marriage: Ed & Nancy Kienholz, January 29th to May 21st and a welcome home exhibition of work by a local artist titled, Out of Joint: Joan Tanner that will be open February 12th through May 14th.

Visionary artist, architect, and futurist Marshall Brown’s exhibition of architectural collages opens on October 2nd. In January 2023, the Museum will celebrate the recent gift of Bout Round Eleven (1982), a sculpture by Ed and Nancy Kiehnolz. Opening February 2023, the nationally exhibited Santa Barbara-based artist Joan Tanner returns to SBMA for the first time since her first solo exhibition was held at the Museum in 1967.

“These shows collectively demonstrate the Museum’s commitment to a contemporary program that is national, regional, and local,” said James Glisson, SBMA Curator of Contemporary Art. “Marshall Brown is based in New Jersey with ties to Chicago, while the Ed and Nancy Kienholz are indelibly linked with Southern California becoming a global art center. Joan Tanner exhibits nationally but has not been given a museum show in Santa Barbara, where she lives, for over twenty-five years. Each of these projects reflect crucial junctures for these artists.”

This is Brown’s first solo museum exhibition and catalogue; it focuses on his collage practice, a distinct vein within his work. Tanner’s presentation focuses only on drawings and sculptures she has created since 2010. She will build two structures inside the newly renovated museum building, and the public can see the latest work in her long career. Finally, the Ed and Nancy Keinholz show offers a chance to see how they thought about the topics of family and marriage as they negotiated their partnership.

“All four artists make collages or assemblages, as sculptural collages are called. Each artist takes the extraordinary profusion of manufactured goods, the sea of things that clutters homes and offices, and transform them into art, into object for reflection and consideration,” said Glisson.

Brown turns to architectural periodicals and books, some printed in color others in black and white. Tanner builds her amalgamations from rebar, nylon netting, roofing materials, spray paint, and Zip tie found at any local hardware store. Ed and Nancy Kienholz favored swap meets and yard sales.

These will share the museum with two additional exhibitions, pulled from the permanent and photography collections. For Opacity which opened September

25th and runs through January 15th, features a selection of works that offer several approaches to seeing and recognizing invisible parts of being and explores an expanded idea of portraiture that exists on the periphery and in the domain of the unknown.

A Time of Gifts: Six Years of Photographs Given to the Collection, 2016-2022 opens October 16th and also runs through January 15th with over 80 superb works by Robert Adams, Diane Arbus, Kwame Brathwaite, Nell Campbell, Awol Erizku, Janna Ireland, Aaron Siskind, and Hiroshi Sugimoto, among many important artists. A Time of Gifts celebrates the generosity of numerous Santa Barbara Museum of Art donors whose gifts of photographs and funds have allowed SBMA to add over 600 photographs to its collection between 2016 and 2022, roughly the era of the Museum’s recentlycompleted renovation project.
