Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company: What Problem?
KNOWN FOR HIS ABILITY TO VISUALIZE THE HUMAN CONDITION THROUGH CHOREOGRAPHY AND DANCE, Bill T. Jones will perform with his Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company in the new work What Problem?, presented UCSB Arts & Lectures Tuesday, November 15th at 8pm at The GranadaTheatre.
Weaving together dance, live music, and text excerpts from seminal works, What Problem? explores the intersection of sexual politics, gender identity, class struggles, and immigration. It features live music with movement performed in part by local community members.
A recipient of the National Medal of Arts, a MacArthur Fellowship, a Kennedy Center Honors Award, and multiple Tony Awards, there is little imaginative territory Jones has not attempted. His latest, highly personal work, What Problem? was developed with an original score to accompany text excerpts of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech and Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. Due to the participation of local community members, this production will be unique to Santa Barbara.
“For the problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the colorline… the relation of the darker to the lighter races of men… And yet, being a problem is a strange experience, –peculiar even for one who has never been anything else.” – W.E.B. Du Bois, The Souls of Black Folk (1903)
“I have long accepted Dr. King’s immortal words ‘We Shall Overcome’ mixed with the scripture of our democracy as formed and shaped by we the people,” Bill T. Jones noted when discussing What Problem? He continued, “And yet there’s always been an uneasy recognition of the truth at
Bill T. Jones is recipient of the 2022 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Choreography for Black No More; 2014 Doris Duke Performing Artist Award; 2013 National Medal of Arts; 2010 Kennedy Center Honors; a 2010 Tony Award for Best Choreography of the critically acclaimed Fela!; a 2007 Tony Award, 2007 Obie Award and 2006 Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation Callaway Award for his choreography for Spring Awakening; the 2010 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award; 2007 USA Eileen Harris Norton Fellowship; 2006 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Choreography for The Seven; 2005 Wexner Prize; the 2005 Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement; 2005 Harlem Renaissance Award; 2003 Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize; and a 1994 MacArthur “Genius” Award. In 2010, Jones was recognized as Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government, and in 2000, The Dance Heritage Coalition named Jones “An Irreplaceable Dance Treasure.” He was nominated for the 2022 Tony Awards for his work on Paradise Square.
Jones choreographed and performed worldwide with his late partner, Arnie Zane, before forming the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company in 1982. He has created more than 140 works for his company. Jones is artistic director of New York Live Arts, an organization that strives to create a robust framework in support of the nation’s dance and movement-based artists through new approaches to producing, presenting and educating.
the base of the great W.E.B. Du Bois statement concerning ‘the Problem.’ The ‘Color Line’ for Du Bois represented the epitome of otherness, yet we now understand this is much more complex. In our fractious era, I am compelled to elaborate on this ‘line’ in terms of sexual politics, gender identity, class struggles, and especially at this moment in time, immigration.”
“These ideas collide in my mind and my creative self like tectonic plates. Tectonic activity creates land formations, volcanic eruptions, and rearranging of whole continents. What Problem? is the latest result of this social/political/spiritual grinding and
reformation.”
Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company’s What Problem? is part of the Dance Series, sponsored by: Margo CohenFeinberg & Bob Feinberg, Audrey & Timothy O. Fisher, Ellen & Peter O. Johnson, Barbara Stupay, and Sheila Wald. UCSB Arts & Lectures Community Partners the Natalie Orfalea Foundation & Lou Buglioli have also offered generous support for the 2022-2023 season.

SSAC Calls for Improved City Communication
State Street Master Plan Community Engagement Efforts Begin
By Daisy Scott / VOICEWITHLONG-RANGE PLANS FOR PARKLETS, PARKING, AND STATE STREET ACTIVATIONS still in the works, the State Street Advisory Committee called for improved City communication in light of last week’s sudden removal of the promenade’s double-wide bike lanes. Unilaterally placed during the pandemic, the bike lanes emerged as a point of contention among community members over the past year.
Officially, interim issues such as the bike lanes are outside of the SSAC’s jurisdiction, falling instead to the City Council’s State Street ad hoc committee. Still, during the SSAC’s October 27th meeting, Councilmember Mike Jordan, who sits on the ad hoc committee and the SSAC, voiced that there should not be just “one-way communication” between the city and the community.
“I don’t see, yet, a structured manner when we take little steps, or even responses from this type of meeting, how people in the public hear or see that and then are able to provide input back, and we’re tracking that input for the short picture or the long picture,” said Jordan.
SSAC Chair Dave Davis, who formerly served as the City’s Community Development Department Director, asked city staff to provide regular updates on city State Street plans to the SSAC so committee members can stay informed. He voiced that while city staff can execute traffic control measures unilaterally, communication is essential given the public confusion over State Street’s future.
SSAC member Hillary Blackerby, Santa Barbara MTD Planning and Marketing Manager, also voiced frustration at the failed communication between the city and the public amidst the bike lane removal.
“If the public doesn’t have a way to weigh in, or to at least give feedback or to know who’s making those decisions - and it was very clear that the normal process was not followed - if this is how we’re going to do it, we are going to fail,” said Hillary Blackerby. “No one’s going to trust us, no one’s going to participate, and we’re going to be in trouble.”
Opportunities for public feedback and input on the State Street Master Planning process begin this week. MIG Inc. Project Manager Mukul Malhotra outlined upcoming engagement initiatives during the SSAC’s meeting, including a bilingual online survey and in-person events occurring through December 15th.
Presented as a “visioning session,” engagement efforts will ask residents to submit ideas for overall State Street improvements, including transportation, parking, and what kinds of activities they wish to revitalize the street.
Virtual outreach efforts consist of a bilingual online survey, accessible via the city’s “Create State” website. Inperson engagement will include Visioning Open Houses from 12 to 8pm on Thursday, November 3rd, and from 7am to 1:30pm on Friday, November 4th, at 1230A State Street.
State Street Master Planner Tess Harris explained that the survey will be emailed to organizations and groups the SSAC expressed wanting to hear feedback from. Design Charrettes are also planned for December 9th and 10th. Future, to-be-scheduled events include biweekly “Downtown Idea Labs” hosted by city staff and SSAC members, as well as pop-up events.
MIG Inc. will also collaborate with the SB County Promotores Network to connect with the Spanish-speaking community.
The next State Street Advisory Meeting is scheduled for December 14th. To take the community survey and view upcoming event schedules, visit https://statestreet.santabarbaraca.gov
MIG Inc. Updates SSAC on State Street Stakeholder Feedback AS
OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE PUBLIC TO PROVIDE INPUT on the State Street Master Planning process begin this week, MIG Inc. Project Manager Mukul Malhotra presented the SSAC with a summary of the consulting firm’s conversations with community stakeholders over the past three months. Much of the feedback garnered echoed the input voiced by the SSAC over the past year.
Stakeholders identified by MIG included City Council members, the Historic Landmarks and Planning Commissions, and city staff within the Fire, Parks, Planning, Police, Public Works, and Transportation departments, among others. Additional meetings were held with local organizations such as Downtown Santa Barbara and the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation, as well as property and business owners.
The commentary gathered through these meetings was largely in alignment with the SSAC’s own opinions. Listed State Street strengths included its historic buildings, overall character, outdoor dining, street closure, weather, and the presence of more locals downtown. Concerns included regulatory and development limitations, safety, cleanliness, inactive blocks, and the number of vacant properties. They also raised the question of whether or not the promenade’s street closure was too long.
Looking ahead, hopes for the State Street Master Plan included designing for locals and tourists alike, as well as for families and children. Interest was also expressed in removing barriers to new investment, integrating housing, planning programming and multi-sensory experiences, and creating distinct districts along the promenade.
In response, SSAC members voiced a desire to focus on downtown art, as well as receive feedback from people who do not typically go downtown. The committee also identified the need to consider how the freeway underpass project will impact the State Street Master Plan.
The State Street Master Plan is expected to be completed by early 2024.

Breathing New Life Into The Book of Sounds
By Daisy Scott / VOICEAREMARKABLE
FEAT OF ARDOR AND MUSICAL
STAMINA stunned a packed Hahn Hall when criticallyacclaimed pianist Conor Hanick performed composer Hans Otte’s The Book of Sounds on October 27th. The debut recital of the Music Academy’s new Mariposa Concert Series, the evening proved a testament to music’s power to individually impact listeners even when experienced in a shared, concert environment.
The night kicked off with a reception on Hahn Hall’s patio, where attendees enjoyed Aperol spritzes and appetizers in the brisk October air.
Music Academy President & CEO Scott Reed greeted the crowd, remarking how the Mariposa Concert Series, sponsored by the Luria/ Budgor Family Foundation, continues the Academy’s 75th anniversary year celebration by highlighting teaching artists and alumni talent.
Hanick also welcomed listeners, introducing The Book of Sounds as “a new start in what the potential of sound can be.” With a resume spanning presentations by the New York Philharmonic and performing with the Seattle Symphony, Hanick currently teaches at the Peabody Institute and The Juilliard School in addition to being a Music Academy teaching artist for ten years.
His skill as an instructor was evident as he taught the crowd the historical context of Otte’s solo piano masterpiece, explaining how its purpose is to “rediscover the power of sound as a physical object.”
“Post World War II was total chaos, and
some of the gnarliest, most complex music was being written,” said Hanick. “This was a reaction to that, saying all of the meaning in those pieces is garbling our sense of what it actually means to experience sound and to experience music.”
Hanick emphasized that the piece’s unique sonic explorations make it so each listener experiences different emotions. Inside Hahn Hall, he shared his personal ties to the piece as a means of remembering his friend, concertmaster Jorja Fleezanis, to whom he dedicated his performance.
Sitting on the edge of his stool, Hanick adroitly executed the 75 minuteslong The Book of Sounds, alternating between its recurring refrains and swirling moments of melody. Attendees fortunate enough to view Hanick’s hands were granted an intimate glimpse into how he coaxed the keys into drawing out the piece’s delicate balance between slow repetition and gentle forcefulness.
Each of the piece’s twelve parts built off of each other to ultimately live up to its title as a comprehensive examination of sound. Select moments relied on plaintive, somber notes, punctuated by sudden sharpness, while others offered flurries of chords that evoked feelings of hope and romanticism. Through it all, Hanick understood that silence remains a vital aspect of sound, allowing listeners to fully absorb what they were experiencing through thoughtful pauses.
When Hanick concluded his concentrated yet seemingly effortless performance, listeners remained still for the briefest of moments, savoring the final notes. Then, they all jumped to their feet in applause.

Mystery at the Museum!
By Sigrid Toye / VOICEMYSTERY was afoot on the evening of October 28th at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum accompanied by cocktails, fine dining, and assorted wines... and an in-person game of Clue! It was close enough to Halloween to reincarnate Agatha Christie’s spirit for a suspenseful mix of Murder on the Orient Express, The Body in the Library, Murder is Easy, and a pinch of And Then There Were None! And our town was out in style for the occasion!
AMURDER
page of my character’s arc until instructed. I was kept as uninformed as the audience until each pivotal moment.”
Greeting the crowds at the entrance of the Museum was the best spot to view the fabulous 1920’s and Hollywood glam with which the arriving guests were dressed. It seems that Santa Barbarians were ready to do some serious partying - both ladies and gentlemen in costumes – perfect for an evening of mystery and murder. Similarly eye-catching was the interior of the museum with its exhibits hidden behind dark velvet drapes creating a huge dining hall with three extra long tables extending the length of the room. Chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and muted lighting – including votive candles flickering on the tables – created an aura of darkened mystery. Black, gold, and touches of red were the colors on the tables topped by unusual floral centerpieces. In keeping with the theme resembling the beloved board game, a murder mystery story was created for the evening with a collection of outrageous characters.
‘Warren Peace’, the story’s make-believe host and movie producer, convinced he’s about to be murdered invites the suspects to his home for dinner. His guests include, among others, ‘Priscilla Peacock’, Hugh Jegow (huge ego … you get the idea!), Donna Badthing, Cherry Bomb, and Allan Greenspan (the money person, of course), who are invited allegedly to discuss the movie he is planning to produce. Seems there had been a conflict as to who would star, the source of the funding, and the value of the casting couch. During the course of Warren Peace’s dinner party some of his guests disappear, falling prey to the murderer …. but which of the characters is the guilty party?
With instructions provided at each table setting, that question was to be investigated by the evening’s attendees. During the cocktail hour several unsuspecting guests were asked to play the drama’s thespians and were handed a book revealing their character’s back story and motivations. Between dinner courses the evening’s guests moved about the room visiting other tables in a quest for clues. Although each suspect had a motive to kill, Priscilla Peacock (Robyn Parker dressed in Killer Black!) and Cherry Bomb, both aspiring actresses, eventually came into the spotlight as both coveted the title role and might kill to get it. Santa Barbara’s famed author and historian Erin Graffy and team, unraveled the mystery by revealing Cherry Bomb as the Murderer, the actress who actually did kill for the starring role.
But even more mysterious than the evening itself was the identity of the guest chosen to play Cherry Bomb! “When I arrived dressed as old Hollywood ready for a fun evening, I hadn’t a clue I’d be asked to play a character… what a surprise!” recalled the mystery guest. “I was given a book telling me who I was, but nothing more. I wasn’t allowed to turn the
Curious as this might sound, the very same person who helped identify the murderer was the Murderer herself …. Erin Graffy! “My guess was Robyn’s character, Priscilla Peacock, but that was voted down because a member of our group kept insisting that the killer was me, Cherry Bomb! I hadn’t a clue and when we guessed correctly and won, I was as surprised as everyone else. Apparently the event planners left that page out of Cherry Bomb’s instruction manual,” she laughed.
Needless to say, all who attended had a wonderful time playing a game of real live Clue. Let’s see what the Maritime Museum comes up with next year ...

Third Quarter Growth
Turns Positive
By Harlan Green, Special to VOICE, Oct 24, 2022THEU.S. ECONOMY GREW 2.6
PERCENT in the third quarter due to exploding exports, declining imports after two quarters of negative growth from the aftereffects of the pandemic, and record GDP growth in 2021.
‘The increase in exports reflected increases in both goods and services,” said the Bureau of Economic Activity (BEA). “Within exports of goods, the leading contributors to the increase were industrial supplies and materials (notably petroleum and products as well as other nondurable goods), and nonautomotive capital goods. Within exports of services, the increase was led by travel and “other” business services (mainly financial services). Within consumer spending, an increase in services (led by health care and “other” services) was partly offset by a decrease in goods (led by motor vehicles and parts as well as food and beverages).”
goods, a good sign of future growth prospects, increased at a 10.8 percent pace, but investment in structures and new housing sank as soaring mortgage rates choked off home sales.
Housing remains the worm in the apple of future growth, and a reason there are predictions of some level of recession next year, because housing construction and sales feed so many other sectors, such as insurance, banking and other professional services, as well as causing homeowners to feel less wealthy, the so-called wealth effect that can induce consumers to spend less.
decline mostly stemmed from a sharp drop in gasoline prices, said the BEA.
By Harlan GreenFor instance, sales of new single‐family houses in September 2022 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 603,000. This is 10.9 percent below the revised August rate of 677,000 and is 17.6 percent below the September 2021 estimate of 732,000, said the Census Bureau.
This is the disinflation we have been speaking of where the rate of inflation is declining, but it’s not outright deflation when overall prices are actually falling, a sign of recession. It is indicative of a soft landing, a desirable outcome the Fed and economists are looking for.
Inflation fell even more for consumers as the Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) Index that measures consumer spending increased 4.2 percent, compared with an increase of 7.3 percent in Q2. Excluding food and energy prices, the PCE price index increased 4.5 percent, compared with an increase of 4.7 percent.
Inflation would decline more quickly if not for the tight labor market. Weekly initial jobless claims rose slightly to 220,000 in the week ended October 22nd, with companies reluctant to lay off workers. The consensus among economists is that corporate record profits are enabling companies to retain workers, despite their higher costs.
In fact, their record profits may also be a sign of profit-taking, companies (like the oil giants) making excessive profits on the rising demand for their products.
It is not yet a given that growth will remain positive in the fourth quarter, or that inflation will continue to decline in the face of product shortages (like oil and food), but I am banking on the holidays to bring out shoppers and keep growth positive for the rest of this year.
Travel and leisure activities jumped because Americans fled their homes after two years of pandemic restrictions. Consumer spending held up and spending on capital
More importantly, the inflation rate has already declined. The price index for gross domestic purchases increased 4.6 percent in the third quarter, compared with an increase of 8.5 percent in the second quarter. The

Bookworm Corner: Verdi
By Daisy Scott / VOICEFOLLOWING
A DARING, RECKLESS PYTHON ON HIS ADVENTURES, Verdi by Janell Cannon captures the thrills and anxieties of growing up. Ideal for students between kindergarten and third grade, this 1997 picture book transports readers deep into a tropical jungle that a society of python snakes call home. This group is divided among the young pythons, distinguishable by their bright yellow skin, and the adult snakes, which are a deep green. Written in an approachable style that has endeared the story to a generation of readers, Verdi tells the story of one young snake terrified about the coming changes to his scales.
Readers meet Verdi as his mother ushers him and his siblings out to explore the jungle, where they will grow up and turn green like the leaves. Verdi is distressed by this idea, as all of the adult, green snakes he meets are lazy, boring, and rude to young snakes. Determined to avoid growing up, he races among the trees, pulling bold stunts to “outrun” his skin from changing.
However, his efforts prove in vain, as his skin continues to darken. When Verdi suffers a nasty fall, he is forced to sit still and listen to the green snakes taking care of him, helping him realize that they used to be young like him. The book ends realistically, with Verdi growing up but maintaining his playful attitude, leading him to declare “I may be big and very green, but I’m still me!”
Verdi’s stubbornness and energy make him a relatable character not just for children, but also adults. Rather than pursue a Peter Pan-esque fantasy where Verdi actually manages to escape aging, though, Cannon confronts growing up with humor and sincerity. The adult green snakes are not villainized, but revealed to be complex individuals who have settled into a restful life after surviving their own adventures
Congressman Carbajal Announces $159,000 School Safety Grant for Guadalupe Union School District
A GRANT FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE for the Guadalupe Union School District to improve school safety and protect Central Coast students in the amount of $159,000 has been announced by Congressman Salud Carbajal.
“As a father and grandfather, I know the concern that every parent feels sending their child off to school – especially as school violence and campus shootings have become all-too-common in our nation. That’s why I voted to help deliver federal grants to schools so that they can take steps to improve the safety procedures and processes on our campuses, and why I’m proud to see some of that funding coming back to the Central Coast this year,” said Rep. Carbajal.
The federal funding allocated from the Justice Department’s School Violence Prevention Program will support construction of a new entryway at Kermit McKenzie Intermediate School, the purchase of new radios for school administrators, and the implementation of improved identification systems for school visitors.
Last Two Oil Piers at Haskell’s Beach To Be Removed
THE LAST TWO OIL PIERS AT HASKELL’S BEACH will be removed by early 2023, according to an update given by the State Lands Commission in collaboration with the City of Goleta.
The State Lands Commission is currently in the process of dismantling the first Pier (421-1), and removal is expected in mid-November. Removal work on the second Pier (421-2), is expected to start in mid-December.
Sections of the beach may close temporarily to keep the public safe during the operations, but the beach will remain open otherwise.
More information can be found at:
like Verdi. Meanwhile, Verdi undergoes full character development, coming to terms with the fact that he cannot stop time but he can control his personality and interests. Through this, children worried about moving on to the next grade in school or growing older can vicariously explore their anxieties in this charming story.
Combined with fun illustrations that capture the beauty of jungles, and references to biological facts about snakes that will interest animal-loving readers, Verdi is truly a modern classic.

Grand Opening of SBCC Dream Center During Undocumented Student Week of Action CREATING
AND CELEBRATING A SPACE where undocumented students can receive assistance, Santa Barbara City College has opened a new resource center called the SBCC Dream Center. The center hosted its grand opening on Wednesday, October 19th at the Campus Center. The Dream Center will provide students with legal assistance, academic assistance, financial assistance, and access to community resources.
“Navigating college is a challenge for many students and undocumented students face even more complex legal, academic, career and life hurdles,” said SBCC Coordinator of Equity, Diversity, and Cultural Competency Roxane M. Byrne.
As part of SBCC’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Cultural Competency, the Dream Center hosted a number of activities and events in recognition of the California Community Colleges system-wide Undocumented Student Week of Action, Oct. 17th to 20th.
The grand opening celebration treated attendees to live mariachi music, free food, and opportunities to paint calavera masks or write letters of support to undocumented students or “Dreamers.”
The Dream Center is located within the Center for Equity and Social Justice in the Campus Center. It is now open Monday through Thursday from 9am to 5pm, excluding school holidays. For more information about the Dream Center, visit www.sbcc.edu
Santa Barbara Hives
A Bee-utiful Boutique
By Daisy Scott / VOICETHESWEET SMELL OF FRESHLY POURED BEESWAX permeating its newly opened store, Santa Barbara Hives celebrates all things bees. Housed in Instrumental Music’s former location on State Street, the mercantile boutique exclusively features goods made by local businesses or sustainable companies, with owners Barnaby Draper and Ashley Farrell’s honey and bee-focused products at the helm.
“Our intention is to make things that are good quality that are good for you and that are good for the planet,” said Farrell, who also works as a landscape designer under the label Ashley Farrell Landscape Design. “We try to have a positive impact.”
The store offers a selection of foodstuffs, kitchen accessories, personal care items, and more, making Santa Barbara Hives a shopping experience that environmentally-conscious folks can
feel confident about.
For Farrell and Draper, who doubles as a global photographer for American Express, their story centers around their bees. In 2019, the pair purchased a Flow Hive, which allows direct harvesting of honey without opening up the hive as well as reveals an inside look at the bees at work. Immediately, they knew beekeeping would become an integral part of their lives.
“It’s really powerful, it’s really good for your soul,” said Draper. “It’s incredible to watch bees dancing in and out of their hives.”
That same year, Farrell and Draper expanded their beekeeping practices to maintain 600 hives, many of which are located on avocado farmers’ properties to support their crops. They quickly turned their eyes to all one could make with the bees, from selling raw honey to honey-based sauces, to opening their first Santa Barbara Hives location in Carpinteria.
Since honey pairs well with cheese, the business soon grew to include cheese plates, utensils, jams, and more accessories, and Santa Barbara Hives became a company that supported other local businesses.
“I think one of the greatest surprises of this voyage so far is the community,” said Draper. “We never had any idea how many amazing people would walk into our lives, and that we’d be able to collaborate with artists, chefs, and people in the community.”
Santa Barbara Hives’ new shop carries its owners’ passion for bees and community through its varied selection of food items, including locally-made coffees, olive oil, and pickles alongside honey, mustards, and more. Throughout the store, displays of elegant wooden utensils and serving platters pair with glassware made from recycled bottles and creatively-decorated tinware.
Beyond kitchen items, the shop also includes intricately designed beeswax candles, clothing made from recycled materials, reclaimed leather goods, jewelry, and more. By teaming up with the conservation organization Ecologi, every purchase supports the planting of a mangrove tree in Madagascar.
The shop will also offer an interactive aspect, with plans to host craft workshops and popup dinners, as well as educational courses on gardening and beekeeping for locals and students.
“We can bring people in and have them teach whatever it is that they’re good at,” said Farrell. “It’s going to make people be able to be more sustainable and flourish and be healthy. Sharing knowledge is really powerful.”

Chinonye Chukwu’s new film Till
Review by Robert F. Adams, Special to VOICEBASED ON A HISTORICAL CIVIL RIGHTS SAGA, Nigerian-born, American filmmaker Chinonye Chukwu has delivered an exceptional narrative film that goes beyond the popular genre of biographical in her latest project Till. The film is currently released locally and was produced by actress Whoopi Goldberg, who had been attempting to make the film over the last 20 years. The film has style, and delves into the aftermath of the tragic real-life story of Emmett Till, a 14 year old who was kidnapped, beaten, and shot by perpetrators wearing the mantle of white supremacy in 1955 Mississippi. Instead of focusing on the horrid destiny of the young Emmett, the story deftly transfers the point of view to his doting mother, Mamie Till Mobley, and her quest for justice. Part of the film looks at the sham trial, but much of the narrative explores her emotions of sadness and anger in seeking to call attention to the injustices faced by African Americans.
The film stars Danielle Deadwyler as the main character Mamie Till. She gives a mesmerizing, brooding performance and the cameras almost never leave her expressive
features. The character’s arc from meek to bold and outspoken is credibly crafted and nuanced. She is also supported by many strong character actors including an almost unrecognizable turn by Whoopi Goldberg as the grandmother, Jalyn Hall as the happygo-lucky Emmett Till, and Tosin Cole who is inspiring as the historic civil rights leader Medgar Evers. The cast is uniformly excellent and much credit should go to the director’s collaboration within the structure of the scenes.
The production design, ambient lighting, compositional framing, and the music choices are the most high-reaching aspects of the film and give this historic story a uniqueness, all contributing to the emotional weight of the main character.
The visual flair in attempting to capture events of over sixty years ago gives the story a rich, lived-in quality. The production design uses an elaborate mix of patterns and colors, the interior scenes erupt in vibrancy, even though the story is stark. You can actually feel the heat coming through the windows. The outdoor scenes recall 1972’s Sounder, also a story of racially-motivated injustices. The scenes of cotton fields with forested backdrops
are haunting as are the store fronts and the shacks that the African-American protagonists live around.
Courthouse scenes feel very real, and the age of the halls of injustice are amplified. The film has visual suggestions of the contemporary artworks of Kara Walker who creates scenes of oppression and raciallybased historic cruelty. Collaborating artists include cinematographer Bobby Bukowski and Curt Beech who headed up production design. The score is an intriguing mix of original compositions including classical string adagios as well as jazz recordings and the thrum of electronic music pulsating with mood and drive. The score was composed by the Poland-based musician Abel Korzeniowski.
Roger Durling welcomed director Chukwu onstage for a post-screening conversation at the Riviera as part of the SBIFF Cinema Society series. Chukwu is an overtly joyous filmmaker, and spoke about her vision for Till, mentioning, “I wanted the play against the expected and especially to focus on the mother’s perspective. I met Danielle Deadwyler through an audition tape, where she blew me out of the water with some sides of the script. I wanted to cast someone who could tell the story through her eyes and
Danielle could really do that. We worked very closely for several months preparing for what the emotional scenes called for, so by the time we started shooting, we were ready.”
She added, “I expressly did not want to show any violence to black bodies, and wanted to tell the emotional journey of the main character, especially in the sequence of the funeral home scene. The studio went along with my ideas, and let me shape the film as I envisioned. Whoopi was fantastic to work with as a producer, maybe the kindest, most trusting personality I have encountered. And it was my idea to cast her as the grandmother, in which she is so wonderful.... In directing this, I really wanted to focus on the acting.”
Chukwu's efforts may very well be rewarded with various awards nominations for the movie, as the film's quality is apparent, including in the stirring script she developed with Michael Reilly and researcher Keith Beauchamp.

Casting Light at Marcia Burtt Gallery
DRAMATIC
LIGHTING
STREAMS through the artworks in a new group exhibition at Marcia Burtt Gallery on view through November 27th. Using chiaroscuro and Romantic atmospheric effects, gallery artists have accentuated light falling on both landscape views and urban facades.
Light and shade splinter both structural concrete and natural landscapes into abstract forms. Contrast pulls the viewer from sunlight into shadow to discover unexpected colors.
Silhouettes cast by objects outside the image expand each artwork’s story beyond its frame.
Glittering light bouncing off faceted water intensifies cast light along the shore.
Backlit clouds diffuse the sun’s early light as well as the golden radiance before sundown; yellows and golds throw a warm visual cloak over both morning and late afternoon scenes.
