About ricordilab Since the launch of the second edition of ricordilab, the laureates Yair Klartag, Lisa Streich, and Donghoon Shin have been incredibly creative and successful. This new edition of the brochure includes all recent works and the latest news of their careers. Initiated in 2016, ricordilab is Ricordi Berlin’s program to identify and support talented emerging composers under the age of 40. Ricordi Berlin publishes selected works by the laureates, supports the composers with expertise in the music business, and provides international promotion for the period of three years from 2019-2022. Backed by a group of international associated partners, we are looking forward to boosting the careers of the laureates. The associated partners have agreed to feature more than one laureate more than once until the end of season 2022/23. We were impressed by the number of applications from all over the world and by the artistic quality and the craftsmanship of the submitted works. All applications were reviewed by the team of Ricordi Berlin who handed over a preselection to ricordilab’s advisory board consisting of international experts. With their thorough input, three distinctively different and visionary artists have been chosen. We would like to thank the associated partners for their commitment to the mission of ricordilab and the members of the advisory board for their high diligence in reviewing the applications.

“His music seemed lightyears ahead in its beauty […] and sophistication.” Jeffrey Arlo Brown, VAN Magazine

Yair Klartag Yair Klartag was born in 1985 in Israel. He studied composition with Ruben Seroussi at the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music, and pursued his Master’s degree at the Basel Academy of Music with Georg Friedrich Haas before he successfully defended his dissertation at Columbia University in 2019. Klartag has received several awards such as the Irino Prize and the Kompositionspreis der Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart; he was also a resident artist at the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program. Klartag’s music focuses on the continuous perception of the listener: “I never perceive a piece of music as a whole, but rather as a continuous evolving experience – a series of ‘nows’. […] I care a lot about the inner form of a sound – understanding the duration that it needs to unfold and to be perceived. Playing with and against these inherent durations of sounds is one of the most frequently used strategies in my compositional tool box.” Yair Klartag’s new work for the centenary of the Donaueschinger Musiktage will be performed by Klangforum Wien. Further commissions include his music-theater piece for ensemble handwerk and the Münchener Biennale, a harp trio commissioned by Brandeis University’s Lazarof Prize and a piece for soprano and ensemble for the Israel Contemporary Players.

“Kafka’s Dream managed to say exactly what it wanted in a series of vivid, elegant gestures that never outstayed their welcome.” Andrew Clements, The Guardian

Donghoon Shin Born in South Korea in 1983, Donghoon Shin lives in London, where he is pursuing a PhD in composition under the supervision of Sir George Benjamin. He studied composition at the Seoul National University with Sukhi Kang and Uzong Choe, and with Julian Anderson at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. He has been mentored by Unsuk Chin and Peter Eötvös. Being an admirer of J. L. Borges’ works, Donghoon Shin finds inspiration in the interconnectedness of the matters: “I was completely entranced by his writing and the idea of intertextuality. […] Through Borges‘ works, I’ve learnt how to mix and juxtapose disparate things to create a new meaning.” In 2022, Shin will be awarded the Claudio Abbado Composition Prize of the Karajan Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker, together with a commission for a cello concerto for musicians of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Karajan Academy conducted by K. Petrenko. Further commissions include a new orchestral work co-commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Seoul Philharmonic and Bamberg Symphony (2022/23), and a violin concerto for Kristóf Baráti and the Pannon Philharmonic. “Lisa Streich has her own voice. The musicians recognized the quality of her music at once, and thought the work was something special.” Alan Gilbert about SEGEL

Lisa Streich Lisa Streich, born in Sweden in 1985, studied composition and organ in Berlin, Stockholm, Salzburg, Paris and Cologne. Recently, she was awarded the first Claussen Simon Composition Prize and in 2022, she will receive the Heidelberger Künstlerinnenpreis. Previous awards include the Composers’ Prize by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation and the Roche Young Commission Prize by the Lucerne Festival. WERGO and KAIROS released portrait albums with her music. “I see an ensemble as a sculpture, and when I’m writing I always have a vision of what it will look like. Sometimes certain movements come into being automatically when the music is played, and in those cases I compose along the choreographic lines. I work a lot with contrasts which benefit additionally from the visual level of an unusual setup of the orchestra.“ Upcoming commissions include FLÜGEL for the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester under A. Gilbert, a violin concerto for the Münchner Kammerorchester and C. Widmann, a concerto grosso for four major Swedish orchestras for the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, HIMMEL for Collegium Novum Zürich, a quartet for Yarn & Wire New York and a Cantata for Klangforum Heidelberg and Festival Heidelberger Frühling.
