Functional and Stylish decorate for the way you live
It’s very tempting to find an inspiration picture of a room you love on Houzz or Pinterest, and copy it exactly into your home. But it is a whole other story to create a home that truly represents the way you live. You want function first, so despite what’s trending, a home that addresses all your functional and style needs will be better in the long run Our colorful living/dining room combo was listed on the floor plan only as a living room. The space was large enough to accommodate two defined areas for entertaining guests. We created an intimate seating area and a dining area to comfortably seat 6. We were able to maximize a small space to suit the client’s need for entertaining friends in an intimate setting. No need for a bigger house! Of course, color and a great pattern mix played a supporting role in creating the intimacy and interest in this space. 5
Chic Design sophistication in a teen bedroom hang out
Think teen bedroom hang out, and the first thing that comes to mind is modular pieces, hand-me-downs and inexpensive furniture. Sophistication is not the first adjective that comes to mind. Our 2015 ASID Designer Showhouse in The Woodlands Texas is everything but modular hand-me-downs. We decided to go bold, yet sophisticated in this teen bedroom hang out. The room started out as a boy’s bedroom with no real style or interest. The walls were a basic gray, and the beautiful cove ceiling was painted out in a sky blue. Our goal was to create a stylish and functional space that a teenager would appreciate hanging out in with friends. We started with a foundation of white walls that would allow lots of colorful accents. Next we added classic details in the picture frame moldings on the main wall. These details help to ground the room, and create a more timeless feeling. The cove ceiling demanded a dramatic finish, and a sisal wallcovering with stylized cloud patterns fit the bill. Deep navy paint was also added for dimension. To make the room more of a hang-out than a bedroom, we went with a custom daybed instead of a regular bed. That immediately created the feeling of a living area where friends can hang out. It opened up the floor space for lots of activities like slumber parties and games. A trundle is a great addition to the daybed to create more sleeping areas.
We continued the theme of white foundation pieces in the dressers and, mirror, custom drapery panels and the bench that doubles as a cocktail table of sorts. The fun acrylic egg chair perfectly perches in front of one of the room’s wall of windows/doors. It provides additional seating without blocking natural light. We then layered in color and texture in the vibrant original artwork, custom pillows and accessories. The result was an eclectic but sophisticated mix that any teenage girl would love to call their own.

Adding lots of textures in the feather light fixture and Mongolian wool bench, creates beautiful layers and dimension in this mostly white room. Gold was also used to add warmth and add to the sophistication in the room.

Elegance at it’s best a spicy dining room with a nod to the past
Many of us own antique pieces that have been passed down to us. Some are very valuable monetarily, while some just have sentimental value. In most cases, homeowners are just not sure about how to incorporate them into a modern living space. What tends to happen is they end up in a corner of a room without any real purpose or style, or worse yet, in the attic or garage.
in pretty rough shape, but we could see the potential in each piece. I especially loved the simplicity of the table and chairs, and the hardware on one of the sideboards.
We are big believers that your home should tell your story. A successful room should start with the things you already own. More times than not, a skilled design team such as ours can create a beautiful, functional and comfortable home around the things you already own. We are the first to let you know if something just doesn’t work, but in most cases, your beautiful antiques can help to give your home soul, and tell your story
The first step was finding a good furniture refinisher who was knowledgeable about restoring antique pieces. We then decided to use color to jazz the room. The drapery fabric is a gorgeous linen paisley, and that was the color inspiration for the room. The brick red, teal and gold was the perfect combination to add warmth, and complement the antique furnishings very well. We anchored the table and chairs with a gorgeous wool rug with the same colors. We added some softness with the two skirted host chairs in an off-white linen fabric. A china cabinet was also brought in to store the clients’ vast collection of China which they also inherited.
In our award-winning spice toned dining room, our clients inherited the Depression Era dining room table and chairs, and two sideboard from their parents. They were
The accessories helped to create a cohesive look, and tied the antique pieces very nicely together with the more modern additions.
