10 CASBO 2022 Annual Conference & California School Business Expo
President Greeting
Richard De Nava Assistant Superintendent, Business Services San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools CASBO President
Welcome to the CASBO 2022 Annual Conference & California School Business Expo – where California’s school professionals will meet for four days to return to our deep connections, continue the work of evolving education leadership and unpack ways to transform the work we do for California’s more than 6 million students. Your commitment to these four days is an investment in the future of your students, your district and your own leadership path. Sacramento is where we’ll gather to shape the new face of education – and the opportunities are plentiful. You have 125 in-depth workshop sessions at your fingertips to fire up your plans, as well as inspiring keynote speakers to open your world to new perspectives. We promise to help you discover how you and your local education agency can make the largest impact and offer the most meaningful guidance to your staff, students, families and communities, as well as find ways to thrive in any changing political landscape. But perhaps what we’re all looking forward to the most – after the passage of three years since our last in-person Annual Conference – is the networking! Here, there’s nowhere better to meet new friends and greet old ones, and if you need to develop a new business partnership, we’ve got that waiting for you too. Our California School Business Expo, though large enough to accommodate 250 vendors, is designed for the personal connections that make the business of schools more efficient, effective and student-focused. I want to extend a big thank you to everyone who has eagerly jumped in to bring this conference to life, and a high five to school business leaders across the state who have committed their time and resources to this important journey. It’s teamwork that gets you through the tough times, and together, we’ll find the path forward, not only for the students of today but for those of tomorrow! Welcome to Sacramento and the victory celebration that’s in store for all of us. That we’ve arrived here is proof of our grit and resilience, and it’s what’s at the core of our mission to help unite school business leaders, hone skills and advance leadership careers.

CEO Greeting
Tatia Davenport CASBO Chief Executive Officer
Welcome to the CASBO 2022 Annual Conference & California School Expo! It’s going to be a true joy to once again see the smiles and tap into the energy that’s generated when school business colleagues from around the state sit down together and share. This year’s conference promises a smorgasbord of learning opportunities not only on new fronts in our customary learning disciplines, but also by way of in-depth exploration into leadership angles that have always challenged our state’s local education agencies. Of course, we’ll also share lessons learned, ways forward and the strategies needed to continue to meet the needs of California’s students efficiently and effectively in a post-pandemic world. And we’ll take some time to celebrate the many, many wins school leaders experienced over the past two years, despite enormous challenges. The time is now to move forward with boldness and confidence, and come April 1, as a CASBO 2022 attendee, you’ll be well-positioned to be part of the amazing future in store for California education. Thank you for being a part of our commitment to Return. Evolve. Transform. We couldn’t do it without you!

CASBO 2022 Annual Conference & California School Business Expo 27
Tips for First-Time Attendees WELCOME TO SACRAMENTO! Thank you for joining us! We hope this will be a great start to your first CASBO Annual Conference! Those who have come before you say that this is the best way for you to get technical information and make connections that will enhance your career. And our goal is to make your first conference a wonderful experience. So follow these tips to make the most of your attendance. Then go forth and experience all that conference has to offer!
DURING CONFERENCE: • First, take the time to review the contents of your conference bag so you can note any last-minute additions and changes, as well as new events and opportunities.
• Download the CASBO mobile conference app as soon as you can, and watch for program additions, changes and updates. Use it to plan your agenda, find Expo vendors, download handouts, take notes, evaluate programs and speakers … and more!
• Visit the Info/Tech Help Desk. If you need help navigating conference, this is your “go-to” spot for information. Located in the SCUCC near Meeting Room B2, CASBO volunteers will be on hand to provide you with information and assistance.
• Attend any conference workshop, regardless of your job title or duties. As you peruse the program and plan your agenda, think about your career: What is your next position or promotion? Then choose any workshop that will best help you move forward.
• Attend all the General Sessions. Crafted to bring you dynamic speakers who will enhance you personally and professionally, they’re also a great way to learn more about CASBO.
• Go to the after-hour social events. They are great fun and provide a relaxed networking environment.
CASBO members are friendly – they know how to work hard and play hard – so don’t be afraid you won’t know anyone … Everyone is welcome.
• Be aware that some events require an additional purchase to attend, including the Professional Council Lunches and Third General Session Breakfast*. These are not included in your general registration, so you must have purchased them separately to attend. If there is still space available, you may purchase these events at registration.
• Wear your badge … and your green COVID-19 screening wristband … and have your guests wear them too. These are your passports to all events, including those that require an additional purchase.
• Wear your comfort-level ribbon. If you want your fellow conference-goers to know how you’d like to be greeted – at a distance, with a high five, or with a hug – grab a red, yellow or green ribbon at the Ribbon Kiosk.
*If you purchased the early-bird registration package, the breakfast session is included; otherwise, additional purchase is required.
28 CASBO 2022 Annual Conference & California School Business Expo
• Check in at a “Reconnect & Refuel” Session. Review the Wednesday 8:00 a.m. workshop schedule to see if your discipline is hosting a “meet and greet” this year. It’s a great way to reconnect with your peers and re-energize for the days ahead.
• Bring your business cards. Make the most of the many networking opportunities that conference offers. • Be sure to enter contests on the Expo floor. You can win gift cards and a variety of cool door prizes! • Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be doing lots of walking … to and from the hotels and throughout the conference venues.
• Be professional at all times, and take care with your social media posts. Remember, you’re attending the premier event for school business professionals – the last thing you want is to have your attendance or your job placed in an unfavorable light.
• Be smart. This is an urban environment, and while we do our best to keep our attendees safe, you need to be smart with your person and your belongings.
• Please note, no children under age 21 are allowed on the Expo floor, in the Hospitality Suites or at any of the evening social events. This is for their own safety and protection.
Workshop descriptions begin on page 46 and are arranged by date & discipline. To see an hourly comparison of all workshops, refer to the foldout schedule or check the mobile conference app! Be sure to check the mobile app for up-to-date conference information!
AFTER CONFERENCE: • Make suggestions. Use the mobile app, conference workshop evaluation forms and post-conference surveys to send us your ideas on how to make future conferences better.
• Share the information you’ve learned with your employer and co-workers, whether it’s a workshop handout, an idea you heard, a speaker who motivated you, or a service or item that you discovered in the Expo. Show your employer and local education agency the value of your attendance at conference so they’ll encourage and allow you to participate again next year.
• Join our team! If you’re not yet a CASBO member, ask yourself, “Why not?” After all, you’ve just witnessed how our members’ involvement at the local section level, on our Professional Councils and in our leadership has improved their careers. Become a CASBO member and improve yours too!

JP PAWLIW-FRY, Ph.D. Institute for Health & Human Potential JP Pawliw-Fry, Ph.D., is an emotional intelligence keynote speaker, peak performance expert and New York Times bestselling author who challenges groups to think differently about human behavior and leadership and advises them on how to manage the pressure that is overtaking so many organizations and individuals today. Organizations face big challenges, whether from an accelerated rate of change, the threat of disruption, ambitious targets or aggressive competition. They can only overcome these challenges with exceptional and authentic leadership. For over 20 years, Dr. Pawliw-Fry’s curiosity and passion for helping people manage their emotions has driven his research-based approach (his organization surveys over 38,000 people a month) in developing science-based skills and tools required to build a culture of exceptional leadership. His work with leaders from Fortune 500 companies such as Goldman Sachs, Intel, Coco-Cola and Johnson & Johnson, as well as the U.S. Marines, Olympic athletes, and NBA and NFL teams, has provided him with considerable opportunities to test his science-based tools in high-pressure environments. He knows what works when leaders face their most significant challenges. As a provocative and highly captivating speaker and thought leader, Dr. Pawliw-Fry brings engaging stories and a lot of fun to every keynote, providing real tools to help teams leverage the power of vulnerability and empathy and teaching the science of emotional intelligence to embrace pressure and manage the disruption and challenges they are facing.
When Dr. Pawliw-Fry is not traveling the globe, he can be found reading, out dancing, or cherishing time with family. An avid and enthusiastic athlete, he loves to participate in a variety of sports, including running, volleyball, hockey and swimming, and considers himself a “professional” rugby fan. (It’s no coincidence that he loves working with professional and Olympic athletes!) Join us on Wednesday morning for Dr. Pawliw-Fry’s high-content and enormously inspiring leadership presentation that will include a fascinating multimedia show and leave you with strategies you can implement the very next day to make a real difference in your workplace and in your community’s schools!

To solve these challenges, nearly 100 districts and county offices of education (COEs) have joined together as Ed Tech JPA, a consortium of public agencies that issues RFPs and negotiates competitive agreements on behalf of its members for more than 30 different software solutions, with the confidence that every procurement is overseen by legal and privacy experts. Student attendance is the #1 leading indicator for student success.
The Achievement Initiative By approaching attendance as a process and not an event, we can change behavior, increase learning time and close the gaps. The Achievement Initiative is an attendance and conferencing management process that is embedded in a multi-tiered system of supports. With a powerful data-driven foundation, we’re helping districts create a culture of showing up!
School Innovations & Achievement is the premier provider of attendance management software and service for K-12 school districts. We have been in the attendance space for more than a decade and are the only company in the market with a patented, data driven process that improves attendance.
