JANUARY
the quarterly magazine for Cascade members

WELCOME TO
I came on board as Senior Director of Communications & Marketing for Cascade Bicycle Club right when the organization merged with Washington Bikes a year ago. It marked a new beginning, not just for me in a new job, but for both Cascade and Washington Bikes, too. With the merger of the two organizations complete, Cascade officially transformed overnight from a regional organization to the largest statewide bicycle nonprofit in the nation. But the work to truly become a statewide organization doesn’t happen overnight. Starting with our mission to improve lives through bicycling, we created a new 5-year strategic plan that guides us toward the growth of bicycling in bold new ways. The new plan, coupled with our strength in numbers, will provide the foundation for taking the next critical steps. Together, we’ll increase the diversity and size of statewide ridership; promote bicycle-friendly policies and investments; and position ourselves as the go-to bicycling resource hub for the entire state of Washington. In the New Year, we’re starting fresh right here, and we’re inviting you on this evolving journey with us. The transformation from our monthly Courier newspaper to the quarterly Pedal Washington magazine is one small step in the overall strategic plan, moving us toward our goal of providing engaging and collaborative content and visuals that celebrate bicycling across Washington state. Our inaugural issue is unique in that we’re opening up the year with a 2017 Guide to Cascade, but as you’ll see in the upcoming April issue and beyond, our plan is to celebrate our vision of bicycling for all by providing thoughtful and fun pieces about bicycling life in Washington. We look forward to sharing these stories with you, and we hope you enjoy Pedal Washington! Ride on,
Brent Tongco, Senior Director of Communications & Marketing
We welcome your submissions for Cascade’s blog and Pedal Washington. Editorial calendar planning begins three months in advance and is finalized two months in advance of each quarterly issue. If you wish to submit your article or photography for consideration, contact the editor as early as possible. All submissions are subject to editing for content and space. Submit your articles or photography to comms@cascade.org. Keep Us Pedaling

YOUR GUIDE TO 2017

You will spend your day rolling from the valley floor to the ridges that define this beautiful place, a peaceful getaway not far from the big city. Cascade Club Tours Vacation by bicycle! Exploring by bicycle is a way to get up close to both nature and a new environment. Cascade Club Tours give you the opportunity to explore by bicycle all over the Pacific Northwest. There are opportunities to climb mountain passes, see the mighty Columbia River and cruise through the great forests of our region. This year we are offering both fully supported tours and a number of "tour lites." With a fully supported tour we do everything for you — accommodations, most meals, on-road lunches/snacks and sag support. A tour lite allows you to try out touring at a lower cost — you arrange your own accommodations and all meals, and we provide snacks and some SAG support on the road. These tours are a cross between an event and a tour. Check out our current scheduled tours for 2017 and keep your eye on our website as we hope to add another end-of-season fully supported tour and an additional tour lite.
