Making Memories
That Last a Lifetime T
by Ryan Moeggenberg, Owner & Head Hoof Cleaner of Cowboy Carriage
he purpose of a wedding is the marriage of two people. The rest of the day is about making memories for the couple and their guests. Weddings are once in a lifetime celebrations that you want people to still be talking about on your 50th wedding anniversary. Making memories at a wedding is easy for Cowboy Carriage. Everybody remembers a beautiful bride arriving in a wedding carriage being pulled by a massive, white horse. If that isn’t your style, there are so many other ways to make your wedding unique and memorable. Yes, the day is all about you, but you are also inviting guests to celebrate the day with you. Make it fun for everyone. Have you thought about a themed wedding? If you want it to be a fairy tale, how about everyone dressing up like a fairy tale character? Just make sure you are the only Cinderella! I think that a dance party would be a good time. You could hire a dance instructor to come and teach everyone how to West Coast Swing. That puts a

whole new twist on the Daddy Daughter Dance, doesn’t it? Maybe the happy couple loves to watch The Walking Dead together and wants a zombie theme. You could have appetizers before the wedding while a few makeup artists paint your guest’s faces. I went to a friend’s wedding that was very simple, but very memorable. It was a small wedding, around 40 people invited total. The groom had proposed to the bride at the summit of Mount Bachelor. They loved to ski together. The wedding was at Timberline Lodge, and they were still on the slopes only a half hour before the wedding! They wore their snow clothes for the wedding. He was in all black ski pants, coat, even stocking cap and she wore the same in all white. What made that Wedding the most memorable was all of the friends and family hanging out in the Rams Head bar at Timberline playing cards and board games and talking late into the night. www.incredible-events.com

My little sister is planning her wedding for this summer. She’s been with her fiancé for ten years as boyfriend and girlfriend. They’re both pretty laid back and just want a great day with their friends and family without a huge expense. She and my mother will be planting flowers in the early spring that will be in bloom for them to use for decorations for their wedding. They’re going to make most of their own food, rent some extra refrigerators and hire a few servers the day of the wedding so family does not have to do the work. If I could easily get my horses and carriage back to Michigan for the wedding, I would make that the highlight of her wedding. If you think flying with kids is bad, try traveling across the country with horses! Since I can’t easily make that happen, they are inviting everyone to bring their tents or travel trailers to camp on their property. Then everyone can enjoy the live band and fireworks and hang out around camp fires all night. That is their style and way of making great memories with family and friends. What is yours? A few years ago, I was sitting on the carriage in the valet parking of the Oxford Hotel. There was a couple just arriving still in his tux and her wedding gown. I

ceremony was shortened and they only had time to snap a few pictures. The guests grabbed food and presents and helped to move the reception to a park in Bend. She said that it was still a great day! Even in the worst situation you can still have a beautiful and memorable wedding. Relax. One of my favorite sayings is that, “You’re never in a hurry when you’re traveling by horse and carriage.” Plan for your wedding to start 15 minutes late. Aunt Edna and Uncle George will be late because they’re from out of town and couldn’t find the ceremony location. It just means you get to enjoy a few more minutes sitting in the carriage with your father. The Cowboy Carriage tagline is ‘Making Memories That Last a Lifetime.’ I work with these big horses so much, I forget how much of an impression they make. People have told me that they would never forget a few of the things that I have done at different weddings. At a wedding at House on Metolius, not only did I take the bride to the ceremony, but I also delivered her grandparents, parents and the bridesmaids, all in separate trips with the carriage. I can’t wait to use my new little wagon to deliver the bridesmaids right before I deliver the bride with a separate horse and carriage! Taking guests on a hayride wagon to the ceremony site or on brewery tours the week before has also been mentioned as highlights of a wedding.

A bride’s mother once hired me to surprise her daughter. While the bride was taking pictures before the wedding, I pulled up with my white horse and carriage. The bride was almost in tears because she had always dreamt about having a horse and carriage at her wedding. During the reception, the mother asked the groom what his favorite part of the wedding was. He said, “Watching his bride walk down the aisle toward him.” When the mother asked her daughter the same question she replied,“The horse and carriage!” After all of those ideas to make your wedding day unique and perfect, none of them compare to the most important thing, your attitude! Don’t let bad weather, family drama or a carriage horse sneezing on your wedding dress (rest easy, it’s never happened like that... they always wait until I’m dressed nice to sneeze on me!) bring you down on your wedding day. When it comes right down to it, it’s your attitude that will influence everyone around you. When the day is all about you, it means you have the most power — make your day unique, make it a memory that lasts a lifetime.

Seth’s outlook on what a marriage is supposed to be about is so appropriate, wonderful and heartwarming that I felt compelled to share it with you as you go forward into a life with your partner. I spent time and followed the article back to its original origin and discovered a wonderful blog by Seth Adam Smith, Editor and Chief of ForwardWalking.com. Marriage Isn’t For You
by Seth Adam Smith / November 2, 2013 http://sethadamsmith.com/2013/11/02/marriage-isnt-for-you/ aving been married only a year and a half, I’ve recently come to the conclusion that marriage isn’t for me. Now before you start making assumptions, keep reading. I met my wife in high school when we were 15 years old. We were friends for ten years until… until we decided no longer wanted to be just friends. :) I strongly recommend that best friends fall in love. Good times will be had by all. Nevertheless, falling in love with my best friend did not prevent me from having certain fears and anxieties about getting married. The nearer Kim and I approached the decision to marry, the more I was filled with a paralyzing fear. Was I ready? Was I making the right choice? Was Kim the right person to marry? Would she make me happy? Then, one fateful night, I shared these thoughts and concerns with my dad. Perhaps each of us have moments in our lives when it feels like time slows down or the air becomes still and everything around us seems to draw in, marking that moment as one we will never forget. My dad giving his response to my concerns was such a moment for me. With a knowing smile he said, “Seth, you’re being totally selfish. So I’m going to make this really simple: marriage isn’t for you. You don’t marry to make yourself happy, you marry to make someone else happy. More than that, your marriage isn’t for yourself, you’re marrying for a family. Not just for the in-laws and all of that nonsense, but for your future children. Who do you want to help you raise them? Who do you want to influence them? Marriage isn’t for you. It’s not about you. Is There Value in Hiring a Wedding Planner? by Melissa Vandenbroucke Owner, Ceylon Blu Wedding & Event Design Studio

his is a question that many newly engaged brides ask. There are so many details and plans to make. Where do you start? Sometimes brides just want some simple answers to their planning process and others want guidance all the way through to the wedding. How do you decide what you need?
You have to decide how much YOU want to plan and how much time you have to do this. Most Brides love the idea of planning their wedding but can become overwhelmed as they see all the details involved. A planner should be one who can bring calm and relive some of the stress that comes with planning a major event. They are good listeners and can connect with your vision. They understand clearly what you want and need. They are someone who you feel comfortable with and trust. References are valuable; don’t be afraid to ask for them.

Wedding Coordinators offer great value in many ways. They can help you decide what you need in the way of rentals and decorations. They are knowledgeable of what things cost and can help you get the best price. Wedding planners plan many wedding and this knowledge is to your advantage. They know where to find reputable vendors with the best value for your budget, saving you money and time. They also know how the order and flow of the wedding should go. They have knowledge with the smallest details that you might not have thought of such as table sizes, setup, who will takedown the event, transportation for your guests, lodging and more. Many Coordinators offer different packages such as complete coordination, month of and day of packages. Day of is the most common package, purchased by brides. As the bride, you want to enjoy your wedding day. You do not want to manage or think about what is next or if something is getting done correctly. Most planners will offer a free consultation just to get to know each other and to see if you are both a “good fit. With most Brides and Grooms working full time and/or are a full time student, hiring a good wedding planner will be one of the best investments you will make for your special day. Wedding videos are so much more than they used to be. There has been a shift in the wedding videography industry towards not only changing the name of what we do, but how we capture emotions and tell the story of a couple’s wedding day. Just like Hollywood movies, an artistically composed wedding film makes you laugh, cry and feel as if you are right there in the moment. It’s the perfect way for you to relive how you felt on your wedding day over and over again throughout your marriage. We recently changed our name from Captured Memories Videography to Ace of Hearts Films to reflect our cinematic style that has been evolving over time. We go way beyond just “taping” your wedding and although it certainly helps that we have highend professional equipment, it goes beyond that, too. It’s about having an eye for capturing those little moments that make you smile... your groom fidgeting as he waits to see you walk down the aisle, the tear that rolls down your dad’s cheek as he passes off his baby to her new husband, the quiver in your voice as you say your vows. And then, there’s this moment. It usually happens just a few minutes after the ceremony, when the bride and groom realize that they’re actually married. It’s our favorite part of filming weddings, because all of the couple’s planning and hopes and dreams for their wedding day has led to this one moment when it occurs to them that they’re finally married and about to explore the rest of their lives with each other. Our goal is to capture that giddiness that’s inside every bride and groom on their wedding day so that throughout their marriage they can relive the best day ever.

Myth vs.Reality
C
hoosing your wedding flowers is one of the fun and enjoyable parts of planning your wedding, but it can still be overwhelming. Many people have never ordered flowers on this scale before and really have no idea how much to expect to spend or even what they need to order. No matter your overall budget, no one wants to pay more than they need to. With that in mind, here are some common wedding flower myths that we really need to bust.
Myth #1: You should order flowers that are “in season.”
This is probably the most widespread of the wedding flower myths. In reality, there are very few flowers that are not available yearround. Granted, there are some varieties of flowers – spring peonies are the best example – that are significantly more expensive outside of their season, but most of the popular wedding flowers are available all the time for the same price. Instead of asking your florist to use “in season” flowers, work together to find the flowers that fit your venue, style and budget of your individual wedding. If you are head over heels for peonies in August, ask for some examples of blooms that can give you the same look but are not seasonal. That really goes for all of your flowers as well. Discuss your budget and desired look with your florist and let them work to get your look on your budget. Be open to the options! If you have your heart absolutely set on a pricey, out of season bloom, consider just using www.incredible-events.com

it in the bridal bouquet and groom’s boutonniere. Sometimes that’s all it takes.
M DIY is great… or terrible. Many brides consider DIY for their entire wedding florals because they feel that a florist will not work with them for only part of the flowers. Most florists are not opposed to DIY, but it is important that the bride really knows what she is getting into. Putting your personal touch on your wedding is a wonderful thing, but be very cautious about committing to DIY the perishable products that must be done on the day before your wedding. Food and flowers can be very time consuming and the last thing you want to do is be stressed about last minute projects when you should be visiting with those near and dear people who have traveled to be with you for your celebration. Instead, think of projects that can be completed well ahead and then packed away until the big day. Decorated vases, signs, paper goods, favors and embellishments can all be done well ahead. If you decide to take on last minute items, do a mock up ahead of time and note the amount of time it took to complete so you can be sure your have the time and the helping hands designated to finish everything. Ask your florist to give you a quote with them making up those pieces… you can then decide how much you will save and how much your time is worth. Consider having your florist at least do the personal flowers, which will be in almost every photo

Myth #3:
you take and are the most labor-intensive pieces. Too many flowers at the ceremony are a waste, because you only use them once for 15 minutes. Try to design your ceremony flowers so they can be re-used during the reception. Vases hanging on shepherd hooks along the aisle can become centerpieces or décor for the buffet. Bridesmaids’ bouquets can grace the cake table. Large urns at the altar area can mark the entrance to the reception or flank the head table. This multi-use mindset really helps to maximize your budget! The trick to re-using floral pieces is to allot the time and manpower to moving them. If you are going to ask one of your professionals (florist, venue, coordinator) to do this task, be sure to discuss it beforehand. It is also possible to change the pieces slightly and give them a new look in their new position. Finally, after the whole affair is over, you will often have flowers left after friends and family have taken some home to enjoy. This is where The Bloom Project comes in! This group of volunteers picks up event flowers that have been donated, then rearranges them into smaller vases and delivers them to local hospice patients. Can you think of a better way to continue your day of love than sending your flowers to brighten the day of a terminally ill patient? Most florists and venues are familiar with this group and can help to facilitate the donation process. The main thing to keep in mind when choosing your wedding flowers is to choose a professional that you trust and someone you enjoy working with. Be up front with your budget, even if it is just an estimated amount at the beginning. This will help your florist make appropriate recommendations. Come to your consultation meeting armed with photos and inspirations, even if they are not floral photos. Even if they seem like a mismatched mess to you, your florist will be able to see the common elements emerging and get a sense of your style, allowing for great suggestions. Ask to see photos of their past work, but don’t be alarmed if you don’t see your exact bouquet photo. Most florists like to make each wedding unique and personal, so they are not likely to do an exact repeat of a prior wedding. Ask how many weddings they service each weekend and ask about their payment and delivery policies. Most of all, enjoy dreaming about this most creative and lovely task of wedding planning!

You are the one that has to wear it all day, take a million pictures in it, spill champagne and drop red velvet cake on it. The second person to keep in mind when shopping would be your fiancé. lanning your wedding can seem like a daunting task, from deciding on your venue and catering choices, to rentals and much more. With that in mind, we have compiled a basic wedding planner to help you navigate the planning process. No matter what stage you are at, you will find tips to help you create your dream wedding. We have designed this guide to be small enough to slip in your purse and carry with you. It is also a reference guide that you can hand over to your Day of Coordinator or that organized family member who is helping out on your wedding day. Before you start planning your big day, it is important to sit down with your family and those involved in the financial decision process and create a budget. This is where a good Wedding Planner can come in and help to guide you through this process. Without a budget, the cost of a wedding can get out of control. Knowing what you have to spend will help guide you in decisions about the size and style of your wedding and vendor selection. Research design ideas and look up inspirational pictures online in places like Google & Pinterest to give you direction.

now what you have to spend. Understand that if you spend more in one area than planned, you may need to cut back somewhere else. A good rule of thumb is not to spend more on your wedding than you can save in one year. If you are wanting to have an elaborate wedding then you may need to consider saving for two years or discussing event financing. If doing any financing you should not finance more than you can pay off in one year. Some Event Rental Companies will provide financing for the rentals and dĂŠcor pieces. Incredible Events has some financing options, for more information call Laura at 541-317-0450.

Tent Sizing
iguring out the size of tent needed to accommodate your event can be tricky. You need to consider what you are using it for. Is it for Ceremony seating, or Reception Seating? For Ceremony seating you need to figure 9 sq. ft. per guests. For example, if you are expecting 100 guests you need at least 900 square ft for seating, and don’t forget to count in space for your isle, so you would need a 30 x 40 canopy. For Reception seating refer to the table chart above. To calculate the space multiply the space needed for your table choices by the number of tables. Also, don’t forget to leave room for a dance floor. You can also call Incredible Events for a Free Site Evaluation & Estimate at 541-317-0450. www.incredible-events.com

They Didn’t Come All This Way for Cake
T
by Stephanie Anderson Stroup, Event Director, Twist Cocktail Catering Co.
he morning was a blur of pedicures, hair appointments, photographs, hugs and those last few tears. Now the moment is finally here. Standing at the water’s edge with the wind whispering through the nearby aspens, you are being announced as Mr. & Mrs. for the first time to your friends and family. All that is left now is the kiss, the clapping and (thankfully) the cocktails. After all, they didn’t come all this way for cake. Make your wedding day deliciously memorable by serving up a beverage selection with originality and flair. Unique flavors, colors and garnishes will wet the whistle of even the most discerning guest. Twist Cocktail Catering Co.’s helpful tips, hints and recipes will get your creative wheels turning.
He Said, She Said
For the cocktail hour, consider creating “His and Hers” signature drinks where both the bride and groom put a personal spin on their favorite libation. For Michelle & Colton’s August wedding, Twist’s mixologists created the Plum-Flower Cosmo (see insert) to compliment Michelle’s playful spirit, and the SyncroEternitini to highlight Colton’s vanagon enthusiasm. Offering a sweet, tangy, vodka martini and a smooth, refreshing, passion fruit cocktail was a perfect way for guests to celebrate the day!
Creative Classics

Central Oregon Wedding Planning Guide
You can never go wrong with a classic cocktail inspired from your parents’ or grandparents’ era. Consider transforming your favorite gin & tonic, bellini or rickey into something that tempts the eyes and the taste buds. For Gary & Cindy’s October wedding, we devised a VanillaPear Rickey and a Black Walnut Manhattan (see insert) that was the runaway favorite. Start by asking your parents what the trends were at the time they were married. Then ask your Twist mixologist to create concoctions for you that blend the classics with intriguing ingredients. Your guests, young and old, will toast your efforts. www.incredible-events.com
Tantalizing Toasts
Look out champagne, there’s a new sip in town! Instead of passing out tall flutes of sparkling wine that are just begging to tip over, consider mixing it up with a hand-created infusion, homemade sherry or interesting aperitif. For Blake & Ashley’s April nuptials, toasting time came with a customized shot glass full of our icy cold Pineapple-Lemongrass Liqueur. In addition, Twist made sure every bridesmaid and groomsman went home with a bottle of the signature drink to enjoy throughout the summer. Don’t be afraid to kick the champagne tradition and think outside the box. Your creativity will be noticed, enjoyed and remembered.
Novel Nonalcoholics Let the creativity flow with your H20! In addition to an original nonalcoholic punch like the Sunriver Sling, (see insert) that was created for Claudine & Michael’s summer celebration, we assembled a beautiful self-serve, water infusion display. Rosemary-Grapefruit, Pineapple-Pepper and Cucumber-OrangeMintare just a few of the flavors we created to make hydration fabulous. Your nonalcoholic beverage selection is an opportunity to highlight your wedding colors and themes. More Than Just a Vessel A simple solution to customizing your bar is to use an interesting selection of glassware. Courtney and Erin collected blue tinted, vintage glassware from thrift stores over the course of their year-long engagement, while Kim and Rik chose to use compostable stemless wine glasses as the solution for their picnic style reception. Consider jars, vases, colorful disposables and interesting vintage pieces to make a statement with your glassware. Whether you choose a beer and wine reception, or a cocktail party complete with a full bar and custom cocktails, let your creativity run wild. Let your bar be an extension of your wedding day vision. When Buying a Bridal Gown continued from page 22
part anyone else are you? I cannot tell you how many times I’ve asked the questions “What would your fiancé want to see you in?” And the answer I get back is “I don’t care” or “he doesn’t care.” I bet he does and you might want to care too — a little anyway. Yes, he does just want you to just show up. But he is most likely hoping that you look sexy and alluring too. And if you really want him to mean until death do we part, you better look hot and stay cool, because he’s already sweating bullets. And yes, mom and dad are usually paying, but they expect to, so get that wild idea out of your head. Mom does not get to choose for you. Next is When. When should you shop for a wedding dress? That’s an easy answer — yesterday! A last season dress can take up to four months to special order in your particular size and color choice. A more embellished gown, the season’s hottest fashion trend or a special modification can take up to nine months to arrive! By the time any additional alterations are done, you will be glad you didn’t wait. Actually choosing your dress first can make wedding planning much easier. Once you have the dress, the concept seems to become clearer. If you buy your dress last minute, you could risk changing a lot of things. Your informal nuptials in the woods suddenly becomes a semi-formal church-first ceremony. And those bridesmaid’s dresses you told everyone to “buy lime green in any style” now clashes with your blush colored gown. You do not want that headache and neither does your wedding party! Next up is What. What kind of dress should I buy? The type of dress you should buy depends on a few key questions — where is my wedding, how much do I want to spend and how important is the dress to me in the first place. Some gals have been waiting their whole life for this moment. They drew selfie-princesses in ball gowns with big puffy sleeves and had a wedding portfolio by the time they were 12. Other gals want to walk down the aisle in a church in a traditional white dress. Others have been dreaming of an outdoor ceremony next to the waterfall where he proposed, wearing a sexy fit and flair. And some ladies dream of a beach wedding where they shared their first couple’s vacation. Of course she’s wearing nothing but a sheath and a smile in this wedding dream! Whatever the case, the location can really determine the style, weight, color and fabric of the gown. The budget can obviously be a determining factor. However if you shop with an experienced consultant, they can help you find the look you’ve been dreaming of within your budget. By adding a sparkle belt here or a necklace there, you can complete your look without breaking the bank. The meaning of the dress can take on many forms. To some ladies, this is the most important and intricate part of the ceremony and that’s great! To others it’s just something to wear to walk toward the love of her life. You alone have to decide what meaning the dress has to you. Just decide and stick to it.

When Buying a Bridal Gown continued from page 40
The big question — Why should I buy a wedding dress in the first place? Because it’s YOUR WEDDING DAY! The happiest, most exciting, wonderful, thrilling day of your life thus far! Would you wear jeans to prom? Would you wear a cocktail dress to a funeral? Appropriate clothing for the occasion. It does matter. When you look back at your wedding pictures in 30 years with your daughter and she asks you why you wore that awful dress that you now want her to wear, you will be wishing you chose your dress wisely. And come on ladies! Sparkle a little! It’s okay! You have my permission! Heck you have society’s permission to be the star of the show — so go big. You’re almost wedding dress educated... hang in there with me. Next topic is: Where to buy your Wedding Dress? In my store of course! Okay — you can shop wherever you want. However, please do me a favor and shop at a reputable bridal shop with knowledgeable, friendly and helpful consultants. Please, whatever you do, consider not shopping on-line even if your bestie tells you it’s a good idea. Also,a discount race-to-the-finish dress sale or the $99 dress sale is a terrible idea. There’s a reason they are $99. Enough said… And if that store is not friendly and does not care about their customer service, they do not care about you or your dress. Luckily most privately-owned bridal shops like The Bridal Suite & Special Occasion offer some kind of 50 percent down program to encourage you to shop and support local small business. Word of advice — just because that dress looks pretty it does not mean that dress is for you. You must try them on. Bridal and even special occasion dresses are not always pretty on the hanger. Just know that and trust your consultant. And as you already know, the dress will not look the same on you as they look on a 7’ tall, 105 lb. walking coat rack that has been airbrushed. Thank you Meghan Trainor for reminding us! Lastly, let’s talk about What Not to Wear. Stacy London and Clinton Kelly had it right all along! Throw away all of those old-fashion ideas and old-fashioned hand-me-down dresses you’re thinking about settling for. Be brave on your wedding day and pick out a new dress for yourself. And please remember that it’s a wedding, ladies. It is not a barn raising or an all-nighter at the strip club! You can still be sassy yet classy, but do remember Grandma is watching! Oh and enough with the “I don’t want to stand out gobbly-gook.” It’s your day to shine. Shine on! Rock on! Pick your mantra, but strive to look amazing! The only exception to the new rule is if you are wearing a sentimental family heirloom. It can be a great way to show your love. Just don’t wear it just to please someone else and then leave your wedding feeling like you’ve missed out. And lastly, please let your best friend have her look. You can still go out and have wine together, but you don’t need to wear her dress just to save a few bucks or hurt feelings. In the end, wedding dress shopping should be Lutheran Church Bend, Oregon fun, easy and it is allowed to pick the first dress you try on. It happens ALL THE TIME. If you’re Located minutes not enjoying the process, then you’re in the wrong from downtown Bend. store, trying on the wrong styles or with the wrong people. Do yourself the best favor of all — take only All inclusive venue with your biggest fans, the people that really love and care about you and have your best interest at heart. Ceremony and Reception space. The rest of your bridal party can be involved by hot-gluing 50 centerpieces together for your tables. 541-382-6862 Happy Shopping! www.gracefirstlutheran.org Article Photos Courtesy of Justin Alexander & David Tutera

e asked. You said yes. And now you’ve got a ring on your finger, a date on the calendar, and one fabulous cake to plan. What do you need to do? Call bakeries to check for date availability, if the date is open, schedule an appointment to go in and check out the designs and skill level of the decorator and taste the cake flavors available. If you are want dessert bars or cupcake trees, find the bakery offering those choices. To ensure that the Cake decorator has enough experience to make the cake you envision, ask to look at pictures of cakes she has designed. Depending on the popularity of the bakery, you may need to call as far as six months to a year ahead to reserve your date. Many specialty cake bakeries limit the number of wedding cakes they do each week. Be prepared to leave a substantial deposit to insure that the bakery reserves the date for you. The taste, flavor and texture of the cake itself are important decisions you will

make when you order. The exterior beauty of the cake will be important for your pictures and your personal statement. The cake will be served to your guests so it should be flavorful, moist and delicious. Be prepared to pay the decorator’s time in designing your cake. Simple cake designs are the least expensive because it will take less time. More complicated designs tie up your decorator for an extended time so you should be prepared to pay more. Know ahead of time what you have budgeted for your cake so your decorator can help you choose a design that fits your budget. At the reception site, consider where you want your cake placed. Check the walls behind the cake. Will it look good in a photo? Consider the placement in relation to the traffic flow of guests. Decide how you want the cake delivered to the reception site. A friend or family member can pick up the cake for you or it can be delivered by the bakery. If you are planning an outdoor reception, remember that flies and yellow jackets love sweets and the summer heat melts most icings. Floral decorations will wilt when outside for a prolonged time. Rain and wind can cause havoc collapsing tents and blowing table cloths off the table. You should plan for a backup site just in case of the unforeseen extreme weather conditions. After you have selected the right bakery, you can have confidence that your cake will be a delicious memory. If something unexpected happens to the cake (such as a careless cousin running into the cake table), chalk it up as another memory, instead of a catastrophe. It will be a memory that you can laugh about later in life. Your cake should be a sweet memory, delicious and symbolic of the joy of your special day. t’s no secret that social media has changed the way people communicate. It has also revolutionized the way that the bridal industry seeks to attract and connect with existing and potential clients. Most brides spend endless hours researching the unlimited and growing bridal industry. Pinterest is becoming the bride’s new best friend, whether it’s the gowns, bridesmaid ideas or tuxedos along with unlimited decorating tips to make their wedding a standout event. Today’s brides are more educated, and the national average age of the first-time bride is 29 [The Knot]. The majority of brides have a good idea what they are looking for and a general idea of the styles that flatter their body type while keeping within their approximate budget. Another shift is the bride has always been front and center but with brides and grooms getting married later in life, they are making a lot of the decisions together as men are getting more involved. In bridal attire trends we hear the statement quite often “I want something different.” Today’s gowns are coming in romantic color palettes such as champagne, blush, cafes, pearl and even shades of pink. Make your Bridal Gown one of a kind; add a colored sash to the simple white dress, floral

and beaded appliquĂŠs or a colored petticoat that speak your style and personality. You can change the style of the skirt, bodice or necklines, remove or add beading and lace. The length of the train can be longer or completely removed to fit your style. Tell your Bridal Consultant if you like the skirt of one dress and the bodice of another they can special order it that way for you. Several bridal companies are enabling us to order wedding gowns with custom specifications. This is a great option for those brides with measurements that fall outside of the standard size charts. We can change hem lines for the petite or extra tall brides, or switch out a zipper to make it a corset lace-up back, which gives the bride some flexibility even if she slightly changes in size. These options can greatly reduce the need for alterations; however time is always an important factor in ordering your gown, especially if you want a custom one of a kind gown. Make sure your gown is here at least three months before your wedding date to accommodate the alterations that may need to be completed especially with most gowns taking around 14-20 weeks for standard delivery. Brides should start the process as soon as possible, for the gown tends to set the
pace for the rest of the attire of the wedding. Wedding gowns come in a multitude of styles and shapes; the most asked for style is still strapless with a sweetheart neckline. We are seeing the romantic and classic lace gowns taking a strong lead in our sales. The vintage dresses are still very popular as well. Today gowns have a distinct elegance and timeless charm with a splash of sophistication. Neo-classic columns, dropped waists and slinky sheaths stand out among today’s romantic brides who seek a modern twist on traditional styling. In today’s bridal market more attention is being given to the brides back; from low-cut and lace-ups to delicate buttons and unique cutouts and keyhole backs. Dresses with illusion backs are very elegant whether it’s a simple sheer look or with beading and lace. This style is perfect for the bride looking for Elegance with a touch of sex appeal. One of our designers has come out with the Disney Bridal Collection, marking the return of the fairy tale princess ball gown. All the gowns have the name of a Disney Princess. Many dresses emphasize the waistlines with corsets and layers of tulle, lace and/or organza skirts. Fullness is provided by

infinite layers and/or draping. Many of the newest looks feature bold combinations of textures and fabrics with exquisite details such as gemstones, embroidered lace and hand-sewn appliquĂŠs. exposure to the wedding industry, but remember that reality TV isn’t the real world and that most brides need to stay grounded and realistic. Stay authentic to yourself and incorporate your own personal touches to make your gown perfect for you. Central Oregon is an area where the majority of the local weddings are taking place outdoors. Whether in a backyard or on a ranch, mountain top or by the beautiful rivers, many are having an outdoor venue. It’s noteworthy to mention that destination weddings have become increasingly more common, in 2012, 38 percent of local weddings were destination weddings. So be sure to allow plenty of time when ordering your wedding gown to accommodate the increasing demand in our local market. Marriage Isn’t For You continued from page 12

about the person you married.” It was in that very moment that I knew that Kim was the right person to marry. I realized that I wanted to make her happy; to see her smile every day, to make her laugh every day. I wanted to be a part of her family, and my family wanted her to be a part of ours. And thinking back on all the times I had seen her play with my nieces, I knew that she was the one with whom I wanted to build our own family. My father’s advice was both shocking and revelatory. It went against the grain of today’s “Walmart philosophy”, which is if it doesn’t make you happy, you can take it back and get a new one. No, a true marriage (and true love) is never about you. It’s about the person you love— their wants, their needs, their hopes, and their dreams. Selfishness demands, “What’s in it for me?”, while Love asks, “What can I give?” Some time ago, my wife showed me what it means to love selflessly. For many months, my heart had been hardening with a mixture of fear and resentment. Then, after the pressure had built up to where neither of us could stand it, emotions erupted. I was callous. I was selfish. But instead of matching my selfishness, Kim did something beyond wonderful—she showed an outpouring of love. Laying aside all of the pain and anguish I had caused her, she lovingly took me in her arms and soothed my soul. I realized that I had forgotten my dad’s advice. While Kim’s side of the marriage had been to love me, my side of the marriage had become all about me. This awful realization brought me to tears, and I promised my wife

“Marriage is about family.” that I would try to be better. To all who are reading this article—married, almost married, single, or even the sworn bachelor or bachelorette—I want you to know that marriage isn’t for you. No true relationship of love is for you. Love is about the person you love. And, paradoxically, the more you truly love that person, the more love you receive. And not just from your significant other, but from their friends and their family and thousands of others you never would have met had your love remained self-centered. Truly, love and marriage isn’t for you. It’s for others. This post originally appeared on ForwardWalking.com, a website dedicated to helping people move forward in life.
