O
n July 23, the High Desert Museum unveiled a stellar collection of artwork in its annual Art in the West juried exhibition and online silent auction. This year’s exhibition highlights the work of 69 regionally and nationally acclaimed artists and includes more than 90 pieces.
COVER STORY On the Edge of Her Seat oil, 34.5” x 25.5” (framed) by Terry Cooke Hall
Every year, the highly anticipated Art in the West shares art inspired by the landscapes, history, cultures and wildlife of the High Desert. The vast region stretches from the eastern slope of the Cascades and Sierras to the Wyoming Basin and Colorado Plateau. Visitors will see new mediums in the exhibition this year including sagebrush, plexiglass, sandstone and enamels. The exhibit also features sculptures, paintings and photography expressing responses to the region in mediums ranging from oil to acrylic, pastel to charcoal, mixed media to encaustic, and bronze to branches. “We are thrilled to welcome new artists to the Art in the West exhibition this year — the wide diversity of artwork makes the exhibit engaging every year for Museum visitors,” said Museum Executive Director Dana Whitelaw, Ph.D. “Art enthusiasts are sure to find a favorite piece of the High Desert.”
This year’s Curator’s Choice Award was presented to J. Dylan Cavin for his piece A Grand Jury Never Did Us Any Favors. Cavin is an enrolled member of the Choctaw Nation in southeast Oklahoma. He holds a bachelor of fine arts in graphic design from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. His work has been shown professionally for more than ten years and has also been honored in the Red Earth Festival in Oklahoma City and the Indian Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The Jury’s Choice Award goes to Brenna Kimbro for her sagebrush sculpture Summer Sky. Kimbro was born in Seoul, Korea and adopted by a family who lives on a working cattle ranch in Eastern Oregon. Early on, she fell in love with horses and started depicting them in artwork. In 2004, Kimbro received a Bachelor of Science in art after studying at the University of Oregon and Eastern Oregon University. She has participated in many shows and exhibitions over 20 years. She works from her studio Kimbro Meadows and Brenna Kimbro Fine Art Studio below Craig Mountain in Union.
Additional renowned artists also featured in Art in the West include Dawn Emerson, Terry Cooke Hall, Kat Houseman, Robert Martinez and sculptor Rebecca Tobey, and past Art in the West winners Rudi Broschofsky, Sarah B. Hansen and Hadley Rampton. Silent bidding is available online, with the opportunity to purchase artwork outright. A gallery guide of the exhibit artwork is on the Museum’s website at highdesertmuseum.org/aiw, as is the bidding portal. Opening bids range from $50 to $8,200. Bidding continues through the exhibit’s closing on Friday, September 30.
Proceeds from the Art in the West auction support the artists and the Museum’s educational programs, bringing science, art and history education to lifelong learners throughout the region.
Art in the West is made possible by First Interstate Bank, KSJJ 102.9 and Western Art Collector with support from CHUBB, Land Rover Portland, St. Charles Health System and Tetherow. highdesertmuseum.org • highdesertmuseum.org/aiw

FIRST FRIDAY & BEND EXHIBITS Mockingbird Gallery 869 NW Wall St. 541-388-2107 • mockingbird-gallery.com On First Friday, August 5 Mockingbird Gallery is proud to feature Tom Browning and John DeMott in our show, Western Traditions, that will open from 5-8pm. Starting with western themes and wildlife as subject matter, Tom Browning has enjoyed a career of painting all subjects. He has used every medium to express himself, but for the past 25 years has painted primarily in oils. Today he is best known for his oil paintings portraying horse and cattle drives filled with a convincing sense of light and dust. In his search to conjure up on canvas the American West during the 1850’s to the turn of the century, John DeMott stands in the path of stampeding buffalo, participates in 1880-style shoot-outs and spends time on Civil War battlefields. His style, which he calls, “historical realism,” combines Impressionism and realism, and includes wildlife, northern plains figures and other various frontier characters. Gentle Existence by Michelle Lindblom
Oxford Hotel 10 NW Minnesota Ave. 541-382-8436 Michelle Lindblom’s abstract works will be on display at the Oxford Hotel during the month of August. Michelle is a contemporary painter/ printmaker and writer. For Michelle, art transitioned into becoming her voice; a vehicle in which to visualize internal and external experiences. “My approach to making marks is allowing the work to flow naturally. My work evolves through exploration, experimentation and discovery. Because of my curious nature and love of process, I often have to step back from a piece for days, even weeks to keep myself from overworking it. The imagery portrays the continuous dialogues with my psyche which are often unknown to me until they become visible on the canvas.” The use of water based paints/inks lend gives Michelle the spontaneity she desires. The mediums dry quickly providing a foundation for the layering key to Michelle’s improvisation, each layer representing another revelation in her psyche. Michelle has obtained several advanced degrees, which led to teaching visual art at the college level for over 24 years and serving as a department chair for ten of those years. In addition, she coordinated the campus art galleries and operated a downtown gallery/studio.

On First Friday, August 5 our show, Stepping Out, will open from 5-8pm. Dawn Emerson became known for her calligraphic use of color, and for the way she captured the movement, energy and spirit of the wild horses and other western animals she painted. As an innovator in the pastel world, Dawn’s work has evolved to become distinctly mysterious and poetic. Whatever her subject, her artwork is alive with an energy that is uniquely her. Using the simplest of hand tools, Stan Peterson carves narrative sculptures which often carry complex meanings. Some well-honed knives and chisels subtract essences from basswood. He is interested in animal/ human connections, and often combines their identities to create narratives bordering on the surreal.

Gin’s work embraces the celebration of land and natural phenomena. “Life in Oregon’s High Desert with its spare, elegant landscapes and panoramic views directly informs my work as a printmaker. Renditions of place are created by exploring stratification through the use of an etching press, multiple layers of ink and additional methods of mark making. The results are suggestions of the land and mood to which I am so connected, a merging of external and internal landscapes.” SCP Redmond Hotel 521 SW Sixth Ave. 541-508-7600 • scphotel.com/redmond SCP Redmond Hotel and Dry Canyon Arts Association invite you to see the exquisite miniature book art of Kelley Salber and over 20 other artists during First Friday Art Walk on August 5 from 4-7pm. Kelley loves to experiment with the book as a sculptural form. Using her passion for texture and color, she imaginatively forms miniature worlds in a variety of forms. Kelley creates interesting new art forms by altering old books. She also delights in inventing her own books as well as building with book board and paper. She has an unsurpassed eye for detail and narrative. Laurel is fascinated with the organic feel and fluidity of fused glass. “My pieces express a dichotomy between the delicacy of glass and the ruggedness of incorporated metals and organic finishes.” Her designs blend a number of techniques by combining sheets of art glass, repurposed glass, powdered glass and metals. Currently, Laurel’s focus is on Pate’ de verre vessels which translates to “paste of glass.” Her favorite colors and designs reflect the beauty of the West and the Oregon coast. Grace & Hammer Pizzeria 641 SW Cascade Ave. 541-668-6684 • graceandhammer.com Grace & Hammer Pizzeria and Dry Canyon Arts Association invite you to see the very beautiful multi-modal visual art of Kym Myck and over 20 other artists during First Friday Art Walk on August 5 from 4-7pm. Arome 432 SW Sixth Ave. 541-527-4727 • aromekitchen.com The new Arome kitchen store and Dry Canyon Arts Association invite you to see the glass work of Mel Archer and wood bowl creations of Bill Lind during First Friday Art Walk on August 5 from 4-7pm. August 5 is also Arome’s Grand Opening. Bill has a passion for bowl making. He finds joy in revealing the beauty hidden within each piece of wood. His individually designed bowls are sourced from arborists, local downed trees and wood mill “extra” poles from Central and Western Oregon. No live trees are harvested for his bowls. He enjoys uncovering the color, texture and grain patterns that nature has provided. These utility bowls are beautiful and food safe. Mel “paints” with glass, nothing but glass. Landscape scenes are assembled of many individually made elements, positioned together and fired. This is fusing. The process is repeated several times as the completed painting slowly comes together. Mel’s work was recognized in 2006 as a top 20 “emerging artist” in Bullseye Glass’ international biannual competition, Emerge. Mel constantly expands the boundaries of what glass is capable of. There will be over 20 artists participating at the seven venues hosting First Friday Art Walk. Junction Roastery 708 SW Deschutes Ave. junctionroastery.com Junction Roastery and Dry Canyon Arts Association invite you to see the beautiful oil and watercolor paintings of artist Gary McPherson and over 20 other artists during First Friday Art Walk on August 5 from 4-7pm. Gary discovered his love of art and penchant for detailed drawings when he was about ten years old by doing various pencil portraits. That love of art continues today in both watercolor and oil in which he tries to capture the feeling and beauty of nature surrounding us that we often don’t take the time to see. Many of Gary’s original paintings, home and studio were lost in the fires that destroyed Paradise, California. He and his wife have been busy rebuilding their lives while trying to become familiar with all the beauty that Oregon offers. Redmond Senior Center 325 NW Dogwood Ave. 541-548-6325 • redmondseniors.org Redmond Senior Center and Dry Canyon Arts Association invite you to see the pen and ink creations of Jim Hensley and over 20 other artists during First Friday Art Walk on August 5 from 4-7pm. METAL ARTS ON DISPLAY
COMAG Hosts Eighth Annual Show & Sale by NOAH NELSON — Cascade A&E Feature Writer

July 2022 | www.CascadeAE.com
T
ARTS he Central Oregon Metal Arts Guild, or COMAG, is excitedly hosting their eighth annual show and sale from August 27-29, in the beautiful ballroom of the downtown Oxford Hotel. For three days at the end of the month, COMAG will be presenting the work of 24 artists, all of which are guild members, whose work includes unique, innovative and collaborative touches. Every art installation will be available for purchase.
In its eighth year, the COMAG show and sale is led by Goph Albitz, a seasoned artist with 55 years of experience as a jeweler and sculptor. First brought on as the show designer eight years ago, Goph now holds the title of show director, as well as designer.
Of the 24 artists, this year’s show will include work from jewelers, sculptors, metal fabricators, glass artists, welders and more. Some pieces will be collaborative, meaning that a single art installation will include the work from two or more unique mediums. A jeweler and a welder might work together and influence one another’s style, or maybe a glass blower and sculptor will put their heads together and create something truly innovative.
This spirit of innovation through collaboration runs deep with COMAG, so much so that it is even mentioned in the guild’s mission statement, which states that the guild is, “Dedicated to the promotion, education and collaboration of the metal arts and crafts.” Goph stated that the guild has monthly meetings, which are always held in a guild member’s workspace. In these meetings, the hosting member will share some work or a technique with the rest of the guild members. These demonstrations help artists of all mediums learn new techniques and to continue thinking outside the box. According to Goph, “a welder’s demonstration might teach a sculptor something new about how to create their structure, while a jewelers demonstration might show the welder a new technique, just on a smaller scale.”
These meetings are paramount to the guild when it comes to fulfilling the mission statement, but their efforts to support one another do not stop there. COMAG has set up the Peter Small Scholarship, in honor of Peter Smalls, a sculptor from Sisters who died a few years ago. The scholarship grants funds for a young artist’s classes and seminars within the guild, which increases overall accessibility to the guild’s classes, seminars and metal arts as a whole.
Even the founding of the guild back in 1999 was due to a need for collaboration. A handful of jewelers got together to discuss their work and share techniques, and it wasn’t long until Joe Elltiot, owner of Dry Canyon Forge and experienced blacksmith, was invited to come share his work. After that, the members decided to make the guild inclusive to all metal arts, and COMAG was founded. The guild would spend over a decade doing small-scale shows around town where each artist could only showcase one or two pieces. Around 2010, these shows began to dwindle out. In 2014, the then-and-current president of the guild, Kellen Bateham, contacted the Oxford Hotel to see if they could hold a much larger show, and the Oxford accepted. The 2014 show, which allowed each artist to have a booth full of work, was a success, and each year has only gotten larger, with 2021 being the largest and most successful show to date.

This year’s show has been designed with the word “garden” in mind. Goph says that the jewelers and other small-scale pieces will be in a ring on the outside, while larger pieces like sculptures and statues will be artfully arranged in the inner section. Complemented by ample amounts of plants and greenery provided by the Oxford Hotel, the inner section full of sculptures and statues will resemble a lush garden that guests can stroll through. Guests are encouraged to sign up for the raffle, which will grant one lucky person each day a $100 gift certificate to the artist of their choice. This is the perfect opportunity to purchase a large statement-piece for any room, as well as smaller, handmade pieces of jewelry for any birthday, anniversary or special occasion coming up. Prospective metal artists are encouraged to come, make connections with guild members and learn new techniques from the artists at each booth.
The COMAG show and sale will take place August 27, 12-8pm, August 28, 10am-7pm and August 29, 11am-3pm. For more event and guild info, visit comag.us. comag.us

MIXED MEDIUMS HIT THE OLD MILL The Stacks Welcomes Local Artists by NOAH NELSON — Cascade A&E Feature Writer

ARTS
T
he Old Mill is receiving a welcome upgrade that helps support local art while adding additional entertainment to the district, for locals and tourists alike. The Stacks Art Studios and Gallery is centrally located on SW Powerhouse Drive, just a few minutes’ walk from the shops and restaurants in the mill. This new studio and gallery space includes four sections; each leased out to an artist or two to present their work to the community, sell individual pieces and connect with other artists. “We’re excited to add more art to the district in a space that could have easily been just another office tenant,” said Beau Eastes, marketing director for the Old Mill District. “We feel like this brings some more energy and excitement to the area.” There are currently five artists in the Stacks, each presenting new and unique art installations. Ashley Cascade Paggi, founder and owner of Ash Cascade Design, presents her graphic design expertise across a wide-range of industries. Outdoor gear, clothing, dinnerware, wallpaper, home goods and so much more have all been emblazoned with her signature Bohemian and retro design. Alyson Brown is a photographer and stylist with a passion for flower-infused cocktails. This passion led her to publish a successful book, The Flower-Infused Cocktail: Flowers With A Twist. While photographing for that book, Alyson discovered a new passion for beverage photography and styling. Since then, she has worked with brands large and small to create eye-catching ads that are drenched in style. Her photography work is on display at the Stacks. Originally from London, Kira Frances is an accomplished painter with years of experience. Her oil paintings challenge the viewer’s sense of perception and reality with small touches that might remind viewers of the various works of Salvador Dali or Pablo Picasso. Lindsey Luna Tucker is another oil painter, but her style should not be confused with Kira’s. Lindsey prefers a much more abstract design that also plays around with texture. Lindsey’s work leaves some interpretation to the viewer, who might find themselves getting lost in her colorful creations. Last on the list of artists is Lindsay Gilmore, who shared some perspective on what this studio space means to her. A painter who worked from home
Alyson Brown
from 2014 onward, Lindsay says she feels incredibly fortunate to have a studio space where she can present her work. “Since I work from home, I’ve been sharing pretty much all of my space with my four-year-old,” Lindsay said. “It’s been great to create a space where my work life can be separate from my home life.” Lindsay says that since she’s been at the Stacks, she has also been able to sell more of her work. “As opposed to keeping my work at home, now people can just stumble in and purchase a painting on a whim.” The studio space helps artists like Lindsay in more ways than one. “The new space allows people to see the natural light reflect off of my metallic paints just right, which is tough to capture in a photo,” Lindsay said. “Plus, I can now draw inspiration from my studio view. Most of my work is outdoorsy, so it helps to actually have a nice view of the nearby mountains.” Additionally, the Stacks helps these artists connect with each other, which leads to collaborative projects. “I love the collaborative process,” Lindsay said. “This truly is a fun and inspiring space.” When prompted about the long term plans for the studio, Beau mentioned that allowing flexibility for the artists is a high priority. “We love everyone we have now, but I wouldn’t be surprised if in two years we see some new artists in the studio.” The Stacks Art Studios and Gallery is open to visitors now, but there will be an official launch day on August 5, the first Friday of the month. SCULPTURE DESIGNS on View for Two Roundabouts in Bend
D
esign renderings of the proposed sculptures for the Powers Road and Brookswood Boulevard roundabout in SW Bend and Empire Avenue/Butler Market Road/27th Street Roundabout in NE Bend will be on view through August 9. Each sculpture design will be on display for one week at both the downtown Bend Deschutes Public Library and at the Larkspur Community Center. Powers & Brookswood Roundabout Larkspur Center through August 9
Empire/Butler Market/27th Roundabout Downtown Library through August 9
Community members of all ages are invited to review and provide input on the three finalist’s works of art mutually selected by the Art in Public Places (AIPP) board and a City of Bend representative. The two sculptures selected will be included in the public art collection owned by the city of Bend. The Butler Market Road/Empire Ave./27th Street roundabout opened in October 2020 as part of the Empire Corridor Road Improvements project in NE Bend. This roadworks project extended Empire Avenue and added new sidewalks and bike lanes and created three new roundabouts for this heavily traveled route. About 20,000 cars drive on both Butler Market Road and 27th Street each day. The Powers Road and Brookswood Boulevard Roundabout is located a half mile from the Bend Parkway offering north and southbound access to Highway 97. The Powers and Brookswood Roundabout provides direct access to the west side of Bend off the Parkway. This four mile north/south route along Brookswood Boulevard supports about 13,500 cars each day. The Powers Road and Brookswood Boulevard roundabout is busy with around 23,000 cars each day with most of the cars coming from the Bend Parkway exit. “The breadth of talented artists for this selection is quite impressive. All seven artists have visited the sites and spent some time in the community, which has assisted in the inspiration for their designs. We welcome the public input to help select two sculptures that are meaningful and speak to our community,” said Romy Mortensen, President of AIPP. The finalists were selected from a call to artists that attracted over 150 submissions for the two roundabouts. The three artists for Empire/Butler Market/27th Roundabout are Jodie Bliss from Monument, Colorado; Jan Hoy, from Coupeville, Washington and Michael Stutz from Fallbrook, California. The four artists for Powers and Brookswood Roundabout are Jessica Bodner from Emigrant, Montana; Damon Hyldreth from San Francisco, California; Michael Szabo from San Francisco, California and Joshua Wiener from Boulder, Colorado. The sculptures selected for each roundabout are projected to be installed in Spring or early Summer 2023. AIPP has created two pages on its website offering the community the opportunity to contribute their public input online. AIPP welcomes public comments online increasing the community engagement with new public art in Bend. Images of the sculpture designs for the two roundabouts can be found at: artinpublicplaces.org/brookswood-powers.html and artinpublicplaces.org/empire-butlermrkt-27th.html. Funding for the public art is primarily from the Bend Foundation, a nonprofit founded and funded by Brooks Scanlon and Brooks Resources Corporation and community donations. AIPP is a nonprofit organization that provides art to various locations throughout the city of Bend. artinpublicplaces.org

Red Chair Gallery Presents
MARY JO WEISS ~ Jeweler by JULIA KENNEDY COCHRAN — Red Chair Gallery
C “
ombining metals is what I like to do,” explains jeweler Mary Jo Weiss. Pairing sterling silver with 14K, 18K or 22k gold, and sometimes niobium gives her jewelry a distinctive look. Once you see it, you recognize it as Mary Jo’s style. Her work is showcased at Red Chair Gallery in August.
To start a project, she may set out a sheet of sterling silver and fuse gold onto it. Then she textures the metal using various techniques such as hammering, roller printing and etching. Finally, she will cut up the sheet to make a cuff bracelet or earrings. After forging and fashioning a piece into shape, she often highlights it with semi-precious and precious stones, such as tourmaline, labradorite and sapphire. Sometimes she wraps a thin band of shimmering bluish niobium around a sterling ring and then accents it with a large freshwater pearl. The result is stunning simplicity. Born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Weiss lived all over the Midwest as a child, completing a bachelor of fine arts degree at Northern Illinois University. She then worked in repair and fabrication at various jewelers, taking Gemological Institute of America (GIA) courses along the way. In 1990, she settled first in Bend and later in Sisters, where she raised two daughters and was the bench jeweler at The Jewel for 18 years. There she made jewelry designed by the store’s owner and also sold her own creations, under the name Josepha Weiss Designs. In 2012, Weiss became a full-time independent jeweler. After so many years in Central Oregon, she has a loyal group of followers who order custom pieces from her. Some of the custom work has morphed into signature products. For example, a customer asked for a pendant showing a mother and child embracing. Weiss made it in sterling silver and brass, adorned with a semi-precious stone. Since then, she has sold dozens of the pendants, named The Embrace. Connection to the local art community is important to Weiss. She is a member of the Sisters Art Association and still sells her jewelry at The Jewel in Sisters. She is a founder of the Torch Jewelry Collective, a shared studio space which includes a classroom for teaching small classes and workshops. In the past, she taught jewelry courses at Central Oregon Community College (until the COVID-19 pandemic made it difficult) and now teaches workshops in her studio. She plans to offer classes in

soldering, hollow forms, forging and other skills in the future. Later this month, she will participate in the Central Oregon Metal Arts Guild’s annual show at the Oxford Hotel and the Sisters studio tour at the end of September. maryjo@josephaweiss.com redchairgallerybend.com Oregon’s Only Arts Magazine Since 1995 | July 2022

2022 Cliburn Bronze Medal Winner & Former Leading Mezzo-Soprano
I
DMYTRO CHONI JACALYN KREITZER Lead Masterclasses in Panio & Voice
n conjunction with the Sunriver Music Festival’s 45th season, 2022 Cliburn Bronze Medal winner Dmytro Choni and former leading Mezzo-soprano Jacalyn Kreitzer, will each lead a masterclass in piano and voice (respectively) featuring select scholarship recipients from the 2022 Sunriver Music Festival Young Artist Scholarship program. The piano masterclass is scheduled in the Sunriver Resort Great Hall on Tuesday, August 16, from 1:30-3pm, and the vocal masterclass is Friday, August 19, in the Sunriver Community Bible Church, also at 1:30pm. The events are free to the public. Dmytro Choni earned a bachelor’s degree from the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine under the guidance of Yuri Kot, then moved to Austria in 2015 to study with Milana Chernyavska at the Kunstuniversität Graz. A prizewinner at nearly 20 international piano competitions, he has taken first prize at six: Santander (Spain), Bösendorfer USASU (USA), Los Angeles, ZF-Musikpreis (Germany), Roma (Italy) and Tucumán (Argentina). Dmytro is a laureate of other top competitions, including Leeds, Vendome, Busoni and Horowitz, and recipient of top young artist prizes at Interlaken Classics (Switzerland) and Piano Academy Eppan (Italy). He now comes to Fort Worth, calling the Cliburn “nothing else but my dream.” Dmytro has collaborated with renowned orchestras, such as the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Phoenix Symphony, RTVE Symphony, Seongnam Philharmonic, Ukraine National Symphony, Liechtenstein Symphony and Dominican Republic National Symphony Orchestras. His performances in major halls in Europe, Asia, South America and the United States (including Carnegie Hall and Merkin Hall in January 2022) have made a lasting impression on his musical development. Dmytro’s debut album was released by Naxos in 2020; it received a Supersonic Award from Pizzicato and was highly acclaimed by international critics, one raving he “could be one of the 21st century’s most outstanding pianists.” In March, he told the Fort Worth Report that music is “always kind of a hideaway from what’s going on in the world. Through the music, you can try to project the best possible emotion, the optimism, the hope.” Mezzo-Soprano Jacalyn Kreitzer began her 45-year career by stepping in for an ailing star in Schoenberg’s orchestral transcription of his Opus 10 String Quartet with Simon Rattle and the LA Philharmonic. She went on to sing leading and comprimario roles with Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Metropolitan, Seattle, Chicago Lyric, San Francisco, Dublin, Teatro del Liceu Barcelona, Los Angeles,

Jackie has recorded with Deutsche Grammophon, Chandos, Teldec and Claves. Kreitzer made her Carnegie Hall debut with the Pittsburgh Symphony as Brangaene in Tristan und Isolde, and Maria Aegyptica in Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 with the Aspen Festival and James Conlon. She premiered E.O. 9066 with Kent Nagano. She was mezzo soloist in Prokoviev’s Alexander Nevsky with Bruno Ferrandis, and Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder with Mark Elder and the Rochester Philharmonic. She was a frequent recitalist across the U.S. — most recently in Barocksaal Hall in Kyoto, Japan. Kreitzer was a lecturer in voice and performance for 24 years at Cal Poly State University; and the founder, producer and director of Cal Poly Student Opera Theatre. She was the artistic advisor for Opera San Luis Obispo, a San Luis Obispo Outstanding in the Arts Honors Awardee, an Outstanding Faculty award winner and a panel member of Opera America. The whole of Jacalyn’s career was based on the fact that music heals and calms the soul, and brings joy to all. DYNAMIC DUO
B
of Brett Mitchell & Timothy Jones
rett Mitchell was born and raised in Seattle. He lived in Snohomish County just north of the city, then attended Western Washington University. Brett began his music career on the piano as a small child and it is still his primary instrument. He then picked up the saxophone in fourth grade and loved that as well. He started conducting and composing when he was a student at Lynnwood High School in the mid-1990s, conducting his first performance in October 1995 at age 16. He holds master’s and doctoral degrees in conducting from the University of Texas at Austin and composition from Western Washington University, which selected him as its Young Alumnus of the Year in 2014. He also studied with Leonard Slatkin at the National Conducting Institute and was selected by Kurt Masur as a recipient of the inaugural American Friends of the Mendelssohn Foundation Scholarship in 2008. Mr. Mitchell was also one of five recipients of the League of American Orchestras’ American Conducting Fellowship from 2007 to 2010. In addition to his work with professional orchestras, Mr. Mitchell is also well known for his affinity for working with and mentoring young musicians aspiring to be professional orchestral players. His tenure as Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra from 2013 to 2017 was highly

MUSIC praised and included a four-city tour of China, marking the orchestra’s second international tour and its first to Asia. Mr. Mitchell is regularly invited to work with talented young musicians at this country’s high-level training programs, such as the Cleveland Institute of Music, the National Repertory Orchestra, Texas Music Festival, Sarasota Music Festival and Interlochen Center for the Arts. He has also served on the faculties of the schools of Artistic Director & music at Northern Illinois University, the University Conductor Brett Mitchell of Houston and the University of Denver. Maestro Mitchell now resides in Denver with his wife and new baby and is very much looking forward to bringing his family to Oregon and being an integral part of Sunriver Music Festival. The Shreveport, Louisiana-born bass-baritone Timothy Jones says he hails from humble beginnings and owes his career and love of music to his parents, many teachers and his aunt. His aunt was a very special woman who came to live with his family while she went to nursing school. While living there, she read to Timothy as well as his brothers. She knew it was important to learn to read and with this important knowledge and given the fact Timothy was proficient in reading by the age of four, he was enrolled in a fantastic preschool that exposed him to extremely valuable aspects of life. This included a Coca-Cola plant to meet the CEO as well as line workers, cemeteries to learn about life and death and of course, symphonies, operas and ballet. This is where it all started, creating the foundation for his life and spurring the passion for his career. Jones (to friends, he’s known as simply Jones) obtained his bachelor of music degree in vocal performance and piano pedagogy from Centenary College of Louisiana and his master’s and doctoral degrees in vocal performance from the University of Michigan. Jones has a reputation as an exciting presence on operatic and concert stages throughout the United States, Europe and South America. His eagerly anticipated performances combine intelligent
musicianship, commanding vocal technique and a unique ability to connect with audiences. An enthusiastic champion of new and contemporary music, he has commissioned and premiered numerous compositions. For the last 20 years, he’s served as associate professor of voice at the University of Houston-Moores School of Music, and previously as assistant professor at The University of Texas at San Antonio. Bass-Baritone Timothy Jones Brett Mitchell met Timothy Jones 20 years ago, working together at the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble. They performed a few pieces there together during that first summer (the world premiere of A Lyric’s Tale by Maurice Wright and Eight Songs for a Mad King by Peter Maxwell Davies) and ever since have continued to work together symbiotically on stage and in life as close friends. They have similar work ethics and passion for what they do. Brett states, “Making music is such an intense process that musicians often become instant friends when working together. That said, when the musicmaking is over, those friendships often fade. But once in a great while, you meet and make music with a kindred spirit who becomes a deeply important part of your life, and that’s who Jones is to me. We’ve been making music and sharing laughter together now for 20 years, and I’m thrilled that our audiences in Sunriver and Bend will get to experience his exquisite artistry this summer!” We, as the audiences in Sunriver and Bend, are now blessed to experience these kindred spirits working together to create magic this August at multiple Sunriver Music Festival concerts. The Summer Festival runs August 10-21; Timothy Jones, bass-baritone is featured in Classical Concert IV on August 21 and in the Pops Concert on August 12 and even as the delightful narrator in Prokofiev’s beloved Peter and the Wolf at August 17’s Discover the Symphony Concert. ABOUT THE MUSICAL
Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Monty Python’s Spamalot retells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, and features a bevy of beautiful showgirls, not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people. The 2005 Broadway production won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and was followed by two successful West End runs. The outrageous, uproarious and gloriously entertaining story of King Arthur and the Lady of the Lake will delight audiences as they search for the Holy Grail and “always

A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR MICHELLE MEJASKI “Spamalot is a laugh-out-loud, Broadway award-winning, wildly preposterous and utterly ridiculous musical from Eric Idle that was totally, however lovingly, ripped off from the motion picture Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Need we say more?”

The exhibition will be on view thru September 24, 2022. The exhibit features 36 of Ben Marra’s large color portraits of powwow dancers. Each photograph is accompanied by personal written narratives written by the subject, compiled by Linda Marra, describing the tribal significance of their regalia and dance. The striking images, along with the text, vividly detail the beauty of the powwow, which juxtaposes tradition and modern culture.

LTA Gallery 611 NE Jackpine Ct., #3, Redmond 541-316-0362 • darrenklingart.net LTA is an aviation acronym that stands for Lighter Than Air, referring to aircraft that are able to float in aerostatic equilibrium such as a hot air balloon. Darren Kling is an Aeronaut, also known as a hot air balloon pilot. For nearly 30 years flying balloons has been Darrens’ profession and during this time he’s also been making art. “The ongoing expression of flying balloons and making art has been the consistent thread my life has followed. Since the beginning I’ve searched out ways to show the connection between these two seemingly separate activities. For me, flying balloons is an art form in every way, and I’ve always challenged myself to show how these two expressions can overlap, merge and provide perspectives that I would never have otherwise.” LTA Gallery is a project by Darren which now incorporates his two passions into a space where his artwork can be viewed and the “art of flight” experienced. Darrens’ artwork is primarily landscape based, rendered with a fluid and abstract style, he works in various mediums including oil, acrylic, ink, as well as reclaimed wood pieces. Schoolhouse Produce 1430 SW Highland Ave., Redmond 541-504-7112 schoolhouseproduce.com Schoolhouse Produce is featuring JayWalk, watercolor painting by Sue McLaughlin the work of SageBrushers Art Society member Sue McLaughlin. Art was a passion for Sue from an early age, but was put aside after college to pursue a career in business. After moving from Utah to Oregon in 2000 with her husband and son, that artistic drive was reignited by the beauty and grandeur of Oregon and by the area’s vibrant community of artists. Stop in for outstanding local food and see Sue’s lovely artwork in both watercolor and oil. Showing thru September.

tarting in August, the Betty Gray Gallery at the Sunriver Lodge welcomes two new shows for your summer enjoyment. These shows both introduce new artists to the gallery and to Central Oregon. In conjunction with the Sunriver Music Festival the gallery will be highlighting the current poster artist Sally MacAllister as well as a variety of former poster artists. Sally is a local Bend artist who works in a variety of mediums. Her festival poster highlights the scenery that everyone appreciates in Central Oregon, and her additional work will examine other scenes in the area. Sally has done smaller shows before, but this is her first premiere showing in the area. Accompanying her will be the former posters from Bonnie Junell, David Kreitzer and Kenneth Marunowski, who will be showing other works to accompany the posters. This show will run through the end of September. The Sunriver Chamber of Commerce will also have a variety of former Music Festival posters available, and some will be on display at Betty Gray Gallery. Proceeds from the sale of the framed posters will go to support music education and business development in the area. The Lower Gallery will be featuring the pen and ink work of Sandy Caldwell. Sandy’s detailed ink work brings out realism in her subject matter with definitive strokes. Sandy recently moved to Central Oregon, and is doing her first show in the area. Her featured work will display a variety of the fauna that make Central Oregon beautiful, and will run through mid-September.

by DENI PORTER rt is like music for your eyes, and the artists are really rocking out at the Artists’ Gallery located in The Village at Sunriver. Everyone is invited to participate because the Gallery is open every day from 10am to 7pm. As usual, the artists will be celebrating on the Second Saturday of the month. Stop by on Saturday, August 13 from 4-6pm for wine, beer, soft drinks and delicious appetizers. You will want to say hi to each of the talented featured artists for this month. Cascade Southebys and other local businesses will also be participating, as they have throughout the summer. Painter Ken Muranowski prefers to paint large, colorful abstractions and expressive gestural landscapes, but of course, that is just a small part of his talent resume. His paintings are dynamic, colorful compositions. Muranowski’s primary subject matter is paint itself and the formal elements involved in the process of painting: hue, value, line, shape and texture. Come spend some time with him and learn about the process. The work of jewelry artist Leslie Klipper Stewart is best described as understated elegance, asymmetrical, sophisticated and bold. Each piece is unique, fashioned from her imagination. Most feature a geometrical quality and a strong element of color. Leslie prefers working with ethically sourced, locally mined gemstones when possible, allowing her to support local businesses and capture the bold colors and reflection of light that she loves. Mixed media artist Sylvia Avenius Ford grew up in Africa and South America. That cultural experience is easily detected from her use of a great deal of textures and bright colors. Each of her works tells an obvious story. She says that one of the highest compliments that she has received about her art is that it makes viewers happy. Glass enamel artist Cheryl Chapman produces art pieces that have been wildly popular with collectors. The process of using high-fire glass enamels would lead one to think that it is a much simpler process than it appears. The work is performed in a reverse process and takes multiple stages of painting and firing- sometimes as many as five kiln firings. The pieces are a reflection of Chapman’s love for animals and nature with a twist of whimsy. Come see these, and over 30 other artists at the gallery.
