“I never dreamed it would be this big” Laughter fills the hallways as men sit at a table playing cards. A John Wayne movie plays in the background. Gray haired women tell jokes and laugh as one knits. This is what typical day at Professional Caretakers Adult Daycare facility in Fort Worth looks like. Professional Caretakers started in 1988 by Maureen Petersen. The economy was bad and people were dropping insurance. Petersen, who was an insurance agent then, decided it was time to get out. Petersen said she needed something else to do. “I was a very natural caretaker,” Petersen said. As a child, she was the oldest. She helped take care of her siblings and her mother. She raised her four children as a single mother. As an insurance agent, she was able to set her own schedule and hours so she could be
available for her children. She said, because of her hours as an insurance agent, she was able to help several people. “A lot of people called on me to take someone to the doctor,” Petersen said. “I would check on people’s homes when they went out of town and feed their dog.” Petersen said she discovered what her gifts and talents were and started her business based on those abilities. She had never worked with the elderly. Her original plan had services that included dog sitting, house sitting and being a personal assistant. “I threw in taking care of seniors as another service,” she said. “Eight months into my business I knew the market was in taking care of seniors.”

Professional Caretakers began in Fort Worth. Petersen and her staff visited in their homes and helped take care seniors of them. In 1995 she expanded in to Dallas. In 2002 she opened an office in Austin. Professional Caretakers now has seven home care locations. They expanded further in to Houston, San Antonio, Richardson and Grapevine and currently have over 400 full and part-time staff. “I never dreamed it would be this big,” Petersen said. In 2010 Petersen wanted to reach out further and expand the scope of people she could help. The Adult Daycare launched as a pilot program. It offers a safe place for people to take their loved ones so they can socialize and be cared for. It also offers their caretakers a break to run errands or go to work. It’s also the only one of its kind in Fort Worth. “It’s like a little club,” she said. “The men love to watch John Wayne movies and they have computers… I wanted to offer something to the middle class where their loved ones can be taken care of and looked after. We give them activities and socialization. But there’s someone to help them get their meal or go to the bathroom if they need it.” Petersen said when she first started her business people she spoke with made aging sound like a disease. She said her experience has taught her the opposite. “They’re the wisest group out there and they know what’s important,” she said. “Everyone should sit down and just talk with an older person, they have a lot of wisdom to offer from experience.”

Petersen said she believes giving back is important. She gives to Alzheimer’s research, the American Heart Association, Meals on Wheels as well as offering charity to her staff members and clients. Petersen said one client Professional Caretakers took on, had quit his job to care for his loved one who had Alzheimer’s. He hired Professional Caretakers to come out on Sundays so he could attend church with his son. “He just broke my heart, so we offered our services to him for free,” Petersen said. Another time, Petersen said Jewish Family Services asked for her help. Armed with her friends and her staff they cleaned 35 houses. Professional Caretakers staff is supervised by RN’s and LVN’s. An RN goes out, assesses the client and sets up the care plan. Nurse aids and personal assistants go out and carry out the plan. Professional Caretakers are available around the clock. Perhaps one of the most telling qualities about Petersen is her confidence in her staff. Her 87-year-old mother visits the cottage and participates in events. “At Professional Caretakers I tell my staff ‘Would you put this person with your mother?’” Petersen said. Petersen’s personal mantra is ‘Know thy self.’ She said she realized taking care of others was her gift. “I had so much empathy for others…and I love helping seniors,” Petersen said. “They’re delightful.”

Baylor “helped me pickup the pieces.

Patti Foster was on her way to a Bible study, when a semi-truck driver rear-ended the vehicle she was riding in at full speed. “The impact ejected me out of the side of the SUV,” she says. “And from there, life changed.” Patti sustained multiple traumatic injuries, including a traumatic brain injury. She spent five weeks in a coma in ICU and then moved to Baylor. “Baylor taught me how to live again. I was like a 34-year-old infant. I had to relearn everything.” Today, Patti is an inspirational speaker and does voiceovers for radio and TV. She also volunteers at Baylor. “I want to tell other patients not to give up.
