KET
ASSIGNMENT : AS A GROUP, COME UP WITH A REDESIGN OF THE COURTHOUSE SQUARE THAT WILL ENCOURAGE INHABITATION AND REVITALIZATION OF THIS MAIN CITY CENTER
LI BR AR Y
LOCATION : BLAKELY, A SOUTHWEST RURAL GEORGIA COURTHOUSE TOWN
After visiting Blakely and getting a tour of its courtyard square and the interior of some historic buildings, the group hand measured all existing buildings, roads, sidewalks and marked the location of trees. A full site model was built with topography. The decided strategic solution for the Revitalization of Blakely was a series of low, L-shaped buildings that would frame a pedestrian-only park-like approach to the Courthouse which anchors the town. These buildings would be mixed-use, so as to have a constant area occupation for this currently dead city center. Also, green and generally pleasant building practices were used such as a halfway submerged parking garage behind the library appears as only a park from the courthouse.
