What are
Phobias
What are they? Phobias are irrational fears that just about anyone can develop.
They can center around a wide variety of things. Like spiders and other creepy crawlies.
Why do we have them? Traumas, genetics, and the environment in which we were raised are all different factors that can cause phobias. But know that the list of potential reasons goes beyond those listed. They could also be caused by distressing past experiences, like receiving a snake bite, for instance.
How do they affect us? Phobias have varying effects on people. Effects can range from feeling nervous, to increased heart rate, and even to loss of conciosness. Say if someone had a phobia of hypodermic needles, just seeing one could make them feel anxious or even make them faint!
But at the end of the day, they’re just fears. It can be understandably hard to deal with these fears, but know that you don’t have to let your phobias dictate your life. There are self-care practices you can try and you can even seek a doctor’s aid if necessary. No matter what, it’s important to remember that your phobias don’t define you. Only you can define you.
