FORUM FOR THE ARTS 5 2 2 E a s t 6 t h S t. A u s t i n , T e x a s A forum, throughout history, is a place where people meet and gather on an equal plane, where particular views and ideas on an issue are exchanged The constraints of our urban site, along with the proposed program created the need to adapt the forum into a vertical typology. So, our initial question was, how does a vertical building capture the spirit of a forum? This building is situated between two distinct zones in Austin’s burgeoning arts community. Arts in Austin are defined by an eclectic overlap of type and use. Here, peculiar adjacencies promote a richly diverse space. In the downtown, you have the refined box gallery, the gallery in the tower, and open space used for installation. These types are focused on display. In East Austin, you have the bungalow house converted studio and the warehouse studio as two distinct types, focused on production. So, what we became interested in is how this architecture can build on the conversation of what art is in Austin, mediating these two zones. Traditionally, a forum is as an object that has a distinct interface with the surrounding city. In the tower forum, a porous perimeter encloses the overall form, with often multiple layers, using the concept of a double skin. Used on the entire building, the face becomes alive, adapting to the day and desires of the user. At various moments, the skins shift, change position, and sometimes disappear, in order to become a spatial device, not just enclosure. Project in collaboration with Sean O’Brien

The site is located at the junction of two culturally rich avenues in Austin; 6th Street and Red River. Both are lined with social and artistic institutions as well as informal artistic expressions.
To create an beacon for the arts, the maximum form is extruded from the site. A strong presence within the neighborhood is achieved and for the city a billboard is created.

VOIDS
The public programs occupies levels closest to the street while the living spaces and support spaces are pushed to the top in retreat for privacy.
The belly of the tower is carved out to create a spatial void that visually connects each artistic space across levels. Diagonal bridges physically connect each level to the next and create a continuous path up from the street.
SHADING
reveals
A curtain of colorful louvers wrap the tower injecting color to the area. Each zone is operable and controlled by the user inside. As use and desires change so does the face of the tower to city. The fine grain of the aluminum panels simultaneously shades from the sun and allows for uninterrupted views from within.
The corner lifts its curtain to invite those on the street in and up, the suspended performance space in the belly of the atrium opens to the city, and the division between public and private opens to create an intermediate outdoor space given back to the public
Street Level The colored louvres continue to meet the street while the corner lifts up, removing the boundary between street life and artistic expression

Vertical Stack The core of the artistic space is connected through a 5-story atrium continually traversed by snaking paths. At its center is the suspended performance hall.

Forum Floors The belly of the tower is populated by artist work and display spaces traversed by a public path that meanders vertically through the stacked atrium. The artist spaces anchor the north and south ends with a controllable louver system.

Below ground, the rough face of the limestone is smoothed by thousands of years of water erosion. Revealed from the solid are networks of tunnels illustrating layers of earth’s history on each surface. This modest visitor center welcomes you to this unique experience of the above and below. From arrival, you traverse the rocky landscape navigating through the dense brush in search of the mouth into the world under your feet. The raw materials and rectilinear visitor center contrasts and focuses your appreciation to the natural landscape and the forces that molded it. When you discover the mouth of the cave, a reticulated stair emerges from below to announce its presence. To gain access to the underworld, you must slip between the shifting entry plates and continue to an underground room.

Castiglion Fiorentino Loop & Connessione alla terra c a s t i g l i o n f i o r e n t i n o , va l d i c h i a n a , i ta ly The Italian connection to the land and the food it brings to life is highlighted in the lifestyles of medieval hill towns, exhibiting a respect for and dependence upon traditions spanning centuries. This project’s intention is to invite visitors to interact with these traditions while effectively and efficiently moving them through a poorly planned town and arduous terrain. Ultimately, creating a new point of interactivity to economically enhance the state Castiglion Fiorentino. The project takes form through an agricultural production center to support the historically grown products of the Val Di Chiana. A place where all types of local growers and producers can bring their raw products and process them into ready to serve/sell products, while also introducing tourists into this process. Educational kitchens, a restaurant, and small scale production exists together with large scale production spaces and market spaces all focused around a piazza. This piazza is one moment of pause along a newly defined route to move visitors arriving by bus or train through newly planned areas of town as well as the historic medieval town center and tower at the top of the hill. VIALE GIUSEPPE MAZZINI A beautiful cobblestoned street lined with large housing blocks and a scattering of shops and restaurants, the SOMETHING is a major inlet towards the medievil town up the hill. The narrow lanes and tight curves made this road a difficult journey for buses and cars moving in or out of the city. Large automobile activity has been redirected away from the narrow streets towards a newly established terminal. This keeps the traffic flowing steadily and reduced the overall noise pollution from large buses and idle cars.
THE TRAIN The train is a vital connection to neighboring Arezzo employment for many of Castiglion Fiorentino’s residents) and beyond. The majority of visitors to the city arrive by train from Florence (1 hour) or Rome (2 hours). The train line also acts an urban edge seperating the agricultural fields from the built-up city which has expanded down the hill. It sits at the lowest point in the town, which presents a steep journey to the city center. Taxi’s are uncommon so the majority of visitors journey by foot.

Additional Route Previously, by foot, the journey took 25 minutes with little attractions along the route until you arrived to The Corso. The return journey was the same in reverse, retracing your steps without adding new experiences to your trip. The Loop adds a second route to the journey, connecting the center of the city and the train line with a direct route down the hill. At is midpoint the Connesione Alla Terra agricultural center is a destination for pause during the steep path. At the beginning of this additional route, the bus terminal is relocated to bring travelers closer to the center of the city.

THE HILLS Just off the Corso Italia are a series of roads and paths that lead through the surrounding hills. Hike these routes to get a view from above the town and entire valley. Along the way are villas and farms scattered over each hillside.
C O R S O I TA L I A The ‘main street’ of Castiglion Fiorentino runs directly through the center of the medievil city; connecting La Porta Romano to the South and La Porta Fiorentino to the North. This zig-zagging street is lined with restaturants, shops, and alleys that lead off to more interesting urban spaces. The Corso is the primary economic center for the city and co-hosts yearly events alongside Piazza del Commune.
PIAZZA DEL COMMUNE This active relief space within the dense medieval streets hosts historical events alongside exciting motorcross races. The Piazza del Commune is the civic center for the residents. It open directly infront of the city’s governmental buildings and post office. On its opposite side, a nine arch loggia built in 1513 by Giorgio Vasari, overlooks the valley. The Piazza del Commune is a critical pivot point of the Loop, directing visitors down a major thoroughfaire towards La Porta Fiorentino.
+ T O R R E D E L C A S S E R O A N D T H E E T R U S C A N G AT E At the center of Castiglion Fiorentino are medieval streets and piazzas infused with the rich history of alliances to powerful Italian city-states and the architecture that dominated Tuscany in the early parts of the second millenium. La Torre at the top of the hill overlooks the entire Val di Chiana and signals the center of the city. At its base are the remains of the Etruscan city that once occupied this hilltop. Underneath La Torre and La Cassero are the foundations of the Etruscan city walls and the gate that signals entrance. The Loop re-opens the Etruscan gate and bring visitors through the foundations and up to the modern city.
CONNESIONNE ALLA TERRA At the junction between traditional farming and contemporary culinary production, this newly formed link in the ecological chain of Castiglion Fiorentino provides first hand experience to visitors interested in the traditions of Italian cuisine. Bringing together the food growers from the fertile lands of the Val di Chiana, respected chefs from across Tuscany, and respected culinary instructors, this HUB for food and the shared enjoyments it brings links the old town and the new at this farm to table experiment. Visitors experience the intake of raw ingredients and their transformation into delicious cuisine through workshops and small scale production facilities that immerse you in traditional methods of refinement and delivery. A restaurant and educational kitchen delivers hands on learning of Italian cooking techniques centralized around a new public piazza. The city path takes you through all the steps of food production - from growing, to harvesting, to cooking, to eating. The elevated piazza provides a forum for vendors to showcase their goods and visitors to take a piece of Italian tradition home with them, all while observing the land from which the food is produced.

KINDERGARTEN 6 1 0 7 T r i a n g l e Av e n u e A u s t i n , T e x a s Children, at critical ages, thrive in educational environments that incorporate community and play as a foundation for pre-school and kindergarten learning. This project is a playful interpretation of an educational daycare - ages 18 months to 4 years - that focuses on learning through play. The development of an efficient and effective classroom model is at the center of this configuration. Each room is consistent in its poportions and primary characteristics - opening to soft northern light, open plan, and builtins - that allow teachers and students to define the individuality of each space for kids to attach themselves to. But each unit is unique through its positioning and relationship to its neighbors.

The programmed blocks are arranged so they occupy their favorite position and staggered to create contained space between each block.
The blocks are rotated playfully so they dance down the site. This creates unique relationships between the alternation blocks.
