The State of the Girl in New Mexico, published by Girl Scouts of the USA, is a powerful study that reminds us how much work we need to do for girls. And it reaffirms that Girl Scouts is powerfully impactful in assuring our girls are armed with leadership skills, courage, confidence and character to help them be the best they can be. This profile summarizes some of the key social, economic, and health issues affecting the 182,206 girls ages 5 to 17 living in New Mexico. Girls in New Mexico rank 48th out of 50 states on an overall index of well-being that includes measures of girls’ physical health and safety, economic well-being, education, emotional health, and extracurricular activities. Girls in New Mexico rank as follows: • 49th in the nation for economic well-being. • 49th in the nation for education. • 47th in the nation for physical health and safety. • 28% of school-age girls in New Mexico are living in poverty. • About 31% of girls 10 to 17 are overweight or obese. • Roughly 15% of girls ages 6 to 17 have experienced neighborhood violence. This is not yet another doom and gloom message, but rather a call to action. Currently, only 2.9% of girls in NM are Girl Scouts because we can’t find enough volunteers. We have over 300 girls on a waiting list. We invest so much time, talent and resources to creating jobs and while tremendously important, why is it that we have so little discussion across the sector around the needs of girls? Our girls deserve equal attention- after all, teen pregnancy and poverty impact them significantly. We need to shout from the rafters that girls need to come off the discount rack and we need to invest our time, resources, volunteer efforts, and yes, money to help girls overcome these huge barriers facing them in NM. These are not issues just for the non-profit sector, they are issues for all of us. These failures for girls are all of our responsibilities because they include our neighbors, our families, and our colleagues. Girl Scouts is one answer that has over 102 years of success, but girls need many more options that will help them become the best they can be. Where are our women leaders on this topic? Where are our fathers and mothers of girls? While we have great success in Girl Scouts, to continue this work, we need more volunteers and resources and partnerships such as Women in Design, KASA/KRQE, FLL, TOOLs For Learning. We need your help and support and so do the girls, Peggy Sanchez Mills

Girl Scouts on KASA Getting Ready for Girl Scout Cookies
Sonia and our Girl Scout Cookie Professionals (Abby, Deborah, and Aliyah) did a phenomenal job with their segment on KASA’s New Mexico Style show. Sonia shared what is new with cookies this year and pitched the Cookie Challenge. The girls then had a blind taste test with hosts Brittany and Chad! Chad asked the girls what they liked the best about being a Girl Scout. Abby shared that when she became a Girl Scout, she was really shy, but that she has developed leadership skills. Deborah shared that she has gotten to do things in GS that she wouldn’t have done otherwise such as whitewater rafting, rock climbing, and other high adventure activities. And Aliyah responded that her favorite thing about Girl Scouts is making new friends! We couldn’t have said it better, ourselves!
Local chefs will make sweet or savory creations using Girl Scout Cookies as the ingredients and inspiration! Other activities will include a “Cookie Crumb” auction (similar to a silent auction, but more fun!), cookie eating competitions, photo booth, face painting, and more!

Plus, it’s all easy, fun, safe, and super cool!
How adults can best support their Girl Scout in the Cookie Sale: Families are an important part of the tradition, values and fun of Cookie Season. Here is how you can support your Girl Scout and help her get the most of the experience. Encourage goal-setting. Goal-setting is an important life skill. She’ll go far if she knows how to set a high goal and reach it. Ask about her group’s goals and help her set personal goals. Help her fill her goals in on her order card and encourage her to talk about goals with customers. Support her sales. She needs you to be on her side as she develops the confidence to ask people for orders. Listen to her practice her sales message, arrange booth site sales at work, places of worship or other locations frequented by people who love Girl Scout cookies. Go with her to sell and deliver cookies. Volunteer. Her group is sure to need volunteers willing to chaperone booth sales, pick up cookies and more. Practice safety. Be a good role model for safety and good decision-making. Help your girl understand the Girl Scout safety rules. Find more resources on our website: NMGirlScouts.org
I have been selling cookies since I was a Daisy, six years ago. I used to be really shy. My mom would encourage me to ask people to buy cookies, but I would refuse to, I was really just too shy. But now I can ask anyone to buy cookies, I have techniques! What are some of these techniques? I figured out how to get people to buy more boxes than they asked for by telling them how much it would cost for more boxes of cookies. One customer came up to our booth last year wanting to buy one box of cookies. He handed me a twenty dollar bill. I told him that $20 would buy him five boxes of cookies. He left our booth buying six boxes of cookies! He told me that he owns a car dealership and that I should contact him when I’m old enough to work! For customers who say that they don’t want to buy cookies, I say: “Did you know that Trefoils are great with tea and coffee?” or that “Girl Scout cookies will only be around for a little time, you better get them while you can!” How do I set my cookie goals? I start with a small goal of 100 boxes of cookies. When I reach 100 boxes, I increase my goal until I meet it, and then increase again and again. Our troop cookie money went to items we bought for Joy Junction. Last year my GS$ paid for me to go to camp all summer--I love Girl Scout camp! What would I suggest to new Girl Scouts selling cookies? Sell with your parents and never go out of their sight. Don’t go into people’s houses. With some practice and experience, you will figure out what works for you—my selling techniques came from six years of selling cookies! What is my favorite cookie? Tagalongs!
Join the Girl Scout Cookie excitement with the #OneMoreBite Instagram contest! The winner will receive a one-year supply of Girl Scout Cookies - equal to 52 boxes - of Girl Scout Cookies of their choice.
There is more to Girl Scout Cookies than what is in the box. The Girl Scout Cookie Program provides an important ingredient for leadership by helping girls develop five key skills.

Camp: Choose Y Resident Camp Adventure
Camp is a progression. Girls as young as 1st grade may be ready for Resident Camp, while others may not. But by the time a girl is in 4th to 5th grade she should be responsible enough for herself, and confident enough to take the step to resident camp alone or with a friend.
Troop Camp Adventure
This is a great time for those girls that may not be ready for camp on their own. Troops can come to camp together and participate in the programs like canoeing, ropes course, archery, horses, campfires and arts and crafts. Leave the programming to us. Trefoil Guild
Trefoil Guilds started in England in the 1940’s and now are present in many US councils. It is a great support for adult women who would like to stay connected to Scouting and can find the same support system across the country. The Guild of New Mexico Trails was started as the result of a meeting with the GSUSA National Alumnae representative at the National Convention in Salt Lake City last fall.
Troop 1912 started in 2005 in the Sangre de Cristo Council, with the purpose of the group to participate in troop, service unit, and council events, provide service at all levels, and to have fun together Girl The mission of this group is to keep adults connected to Scouting Scouting. The Santa Fe/Los Alamos group functions as a patrol with while enjoying activities that will enrich our lives. The value of this their events open to Girl Scout women throughout the Council. group is to provide comradery for adults that share a love of Scouting / Guiding.
