TAX-TIME ADVICE FOR GAMBLERS
Good tax advice is something to which anyone who attends casinos on a regular basis should pay heed. If you have not already filed your return, the info below will advise you on what to do for your 2015 return. And if you have, then keep this on file for next year and the years going forward. The expansion of gambling that has taken place across the United States during the last 15 years has meant that more people than ever are required to report their winnings. Which means if you’re a recreational casino gambler, you should be taking meticulous notes documenting your wins and losses. If you collected a slot jackpot of $1,200 or more in 2015 the casino was obligated to notify the Internal Revenue Service of your good fortune in the form of a W-2G. This means you must report those winnings on your federal income tax return. That’s the bad news. The good news is that you can claim losses up to the amount of the winnings if you are eligible to itemize deductions. But you had better have the proper documentation to support those losses in the event the IRS calls looking for proof. According to tax expert Richard LaGrant, a partner with Denis Gioletti at Consolidated Tax Services, Inc. in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, the IRS has stepped up efforts in recent years to hold gamblers accountable. “I have seen more audits on gambling,” says LaGrant, who has earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the IRS. “Requirements for supporting losses against gambling winnings have always been around, but they used to be loosely enforced. The IRS is not looking the other way anymore. They are really holding people to the letter of the law.” LaGrant recommends keeping a daily log to track your gambling activity. The information should include the name of the casino, the date, the particular game you played, the machine’s serial number, and the length of time you played. Other forms of documentation to keep include canceled checks, receipts from ATM withdrawals, records of cash markers from casino credit departments, and parking and dining receipts—anything that proves you withdrew cash from the casino or were present on that date. You of course can request win/loss statements from the casinos you have patronized, but they may not be good enough

documentation if you wish to claim losses to offset federal tax liability on gambling winnings. So keep your own records. To play it safe, you can request that the taxes be taken out on the spot when you win a jackpot. But, again, keep all that documentation as proof when you file your returns. If you can substantiate losses at the end of the year, you will take a credit for the amount they withheld and you’ll get back some, if not all, of the money. “The IRS can detect hasty records made up two years after the fact,” LeGrant continues. “They’re looking for a timely kept diary of when this gambling takes place. They’re serious about it. They want to see the proof.”

If you’ve tuned in to the radio or turned on the television for any length of time over the past year, you’ve likely heard “Fight Song,” the anthemic pop tune written by Rachel Platten that has been showcased in everything from television shows to Ford automobile commercials to Hillary Clinton’s presidential rallies. Now the 34-year-old American singer and songwriter is touring in support of the album that launched the single, Wildfire, and is proving to audiences across the country that she continues to grab fame rather than flames. “Fight Song” peaked at number six on Billboard’s Hot 100 and also topped the UK Singles Chart. Another single from the album, which hit number five
Although Platten had put out two albums prior to Wildfire (Trust in Me in 2003 and Be Here in 2011), she has said in several interviews that she struggled to find inspiration after her last album. “I felt crazy sometimes that I still believed in myself when there were no signs that I should,” she says on her website. During this time, a conversation with her soonto-be-manager, Ben Singer, helped reignite her passion. “Ben helped me realize that I had to start my own fire and my songs would be the sparks.” After two years of writing, she got her spark back with “Fight Song,” turning inward to tell a personal story. Of course, you can, Jenny. As to whether that information will do you any good on a randomly shuffled game, sorry, it won’t. Besides, whatever answer you do get from a dealer doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be getting the truth. For example, if a dealer is standing on a dead game, arms crossed in a standoffish position, it is a certainty he or she will say “Hot!” That uninterested stance is a dead giveaway that the dealer doesn’t want to be bothered. Likewise, some dealers will recognize a player from the past—for instance, a non-tipper—and will articulate, unequivocally, how hot they are, hoping the inquiring player will move along. Personally, I always found it amusing that most players would not wander off to avoid the wrath of my dealing when I told them “I’m hot,” but instead saw me as some gambling conquest to be made. “Okay, Buddy, take your best shot.” Yet, in the end, I’d beat them hardheartedly, but not because of my averred “I’m hot” reference. Their eventual beatdown was always based on the combination of the math of the game and their poor play.
