On the Move and in the Groove

WHAT ARE THE ODDS? Come with me for just a minute: Let’s pay a visit to Sandia Resort and Casino. We’re going to play some slots—a good place to do so since Sandia has stuffed over 2,000 of ‘em across acres and acres of carpet.

But, wait. Maybe that’s too many? After all, you don’t play the slots all that often—these choices are a little overwhelming.

Okay, then, let’s run over to San Felipe Casino— they have less than 800 slots on their floor. Should be an easier decision, right?

Not necessarily.

Whether you’re looking for a big score or just a few wins here and there, your odds are about the same at either casino.

Why is that? Because everything about slots is random. There are dozens of stories out there about how “this one slot was hit back-to-back with serious jackpot numbers.” That’s an example of random.

But let’s go back to you first walking into the casino and looking across the bustling floor at wave after wave of slot machines. How do you decide which machine to play?

August 2014 Everyone seems to approach the problem differently. I’ve watched as some wander aimlessly and slowly through aisle after aisle, looking, or waiting, for a machine to call to them. Then there are the tigers, the chargers, the players who know precisely which machine they’re going to play, to work over, to talk to, to cuss at, then, hopefully, to kiss.

They head straight to that machine and go to work.

Is there a difference between these two types of players?

Not a whisper. Just go back to that word I mentioned above: random.

Inside your favorite slot machine is a device— we’ll call it a chip. This little rascal is small, waferlike, and it drives another device that you could say is like a little engine. Now this little chip and this little engine work in concert and run continuously, 24/7, whether or not the machine is being played.

The screen only lights up when money drops in and a player starts pushing buttons. At that point, the cur-

tain is up, the symbols are before us, and the show begins—to entertain us, and at times to frustrate us and make us cry.

And, yes, sometimes when the machine is at rest, it could hit jackpots, paydays big and small.

It’s like a play going on backstage: while the theatre is dark, the show goes on and on. And on.

So, which way to go? Simply sit down in front of any old machine and start slugging away, or cull one or two out of the herd of hundreds and concentrate on them only? Psychologists tell me players get the most satisfaction by selecting one or two—no more than three—slots and staying with them. Learn all you can about how to build on credits, familiarize yourself with all the symbols and icons. It will pay off in the end.

But the real payoff is the sense of accomplishment you’ll feel if and when you do hit a sizable jackpot, the satisfaction of knowing, “It wasn’t just Lady Luck smiling at me. I learned and earned that payday.”

Whatever Floats Your Boat That was the catch phrase designed to attract passengers to the Floridabased Tradewinds Casino Cruise firm, which celebrated the maiden voyage of its Escapade casino boat off the Georgia coast back in mid July.

The 174-foot boat departed about 7pm on Tuesday, July 15, with 96 passengers and 27 crewmembers aboard.

But before things could really get hopping on what was supposed to have been about a 24-hour sojourn, the ship ran aground around midnight, getting stuck just off the north end of Tybee Island, a popular beach destination east of Savannah.

Thankfully, no one died and no one was hurt—heck, no one really even

complained. Sixteen hours aboard a ship with plenty of food, water, and lively fellow passengers was less a tragedy than a slight inconvenience.

Passengers took the situation in stride, many of them sleeping on the floor using their lifejackets as pillows, and enjoyed a hearty breakfast of bacon and eggs in air-conditioned comfort on Wednesday morning, thanks to a service oriented crew and the ship’s generators.

Eventually, two Coast Guard cutters showed up to ferry everyone ashore. It is still unknown what caused the ship to run aground, but a malfunction of part of its navigation system was probably to blame.

Dear Mark: I read your column religiously and always find it very informative. You recently wrote a column regarding taxes and stated, “Even a Super Bowl bet won from Uncle Louie is taxable.” Does the same apply to winning at an Indian Reservation casino? I have read that Indian land operates as a sovereign nation, so

wouldn’t I be excluded from paying taxes?

—Ron R. Every time I mention casino winnings and taxes, gamblers predictably make inquiries about money won at an Indian casino. You, like others, assume that because Indian reservations have a unique tax arrangement with

player smile when the stickman calls “seven out,” the signal for the dealers to start raking in the chips from players who had wagered the dice would pass?

When the dice are cold and the dread number seven is popping up with regularity, that silent and inconspicuous player standing “on the hook” (corner of the table) may be the only one winning money.

That’s because he’s what’s known as a “don’t” bettor, or a craps player who wagers that seven will be rolled before the point. The vast majority of craps players bet that the dice will pass, or that the point will be made before a seven. Rooting for the point creates the camaraderie that makes the the federal government and are on sovereign land, this somehow excludes your obligation to pay taxes because your windfall happened on their self-governing property.

I am sorry to say, Ron, but Uncle Sam still expects you to pay up. In the eyes of the IRS, whether you are on a cruise ship in the Bermuda Triangle, at an illegal cellar casino in Shanghai, or at the Odawa (Indian) Casino where I live in northern Michigan, any winnings, from whatever form of gambling worldwide, are taxable and must be reported as “Other Income,” on Form 1040 of the U.S. Individual Tax Return.

Don’t bettors patiently wait for the number seven to appear. If it does, they must celebrate in silence and collect their winnings without fanfare. Don’t bettors are loners.

Betting the dice will pass is a team sport.

Does this make don’t bettors “the bad guys”? Not really. It’s just a way to take complete advantage of the freedom of the game. If you wager the dice will not pass, the toughest mathematical hurdle you encounter is the come out roll. The odds are against you.

You’ll lose your bet on 7 or 11.

There are six ways to make a 7 and two ways to make 11 out of a possible 36 combinations of the dice.

You’ll win your bet on a two or three (12 is a push), but there is only one way to make a two, two ways to make a three, and one way to make a 12.

If the don’t bettor survives the come out roll and a point is

established, the odds of winning shift in his favor.

The odds are 1-to-2 in favor of the don’t bettor if the point is 4 or 10, 2-to-3 in favor if the point is 5 or 9, and 5-to6 in favor if the point is 6 or 8. Win the bet and you collect even money.

Comparing the same situation if you have a pass line bet, the respective odds are 2-to-1, 3-to-2, and 6-to-5 against, yet the payoff (even money) is the same. Just as with betting the pass line, don’t bettors can make an odds bet on which there is no house advantage.

The casino knows that once a point is established, the odds are stacked against pass line bettors, whereas don’t bettors are in the driver’s seat. That’s why a pass line bet is a contract bet. Once you place it, you can’t pick it up. A decision of the dice has to be reached.

Don’t bets can be picked up by the player at any time.

The box man is only too happy to see a player retract a bet that has the possibility of winning when the odds are working against the house.

One-size-fits-all card strategies such as basic strategy don’t work because everything changes from round to round. Basic strategy only works if the cards are balanced, which is, essentially, never.

You’ll see this graphically demonstrated if you use my Probability & Imbalances Calculator religiously and play out many thousands of blackjack rounds.

You’ll hardly, if ever, see the cards on the table or in the un-dealt mix during the course of play represented in the same proportions as they were in a complete 52card deck, representing a “balanced” situation.

For instance, look at this real-world first-round card example. Old Schoolers would celebrate this situation as a likely winning scenario. “Let the dealer bust!” they’d shout with glee.

Yet is this really a great situation for the players without the 20-point hands? Should the players with the 8s and aces split in this situation, as the Old Schoolers always advise? What’s the reality?

I’ve provided you a small portion of the analysis of this situation from my Probability & Imbalances Calculator (available exclusively on www. blackjacktoday.com). There’s no debating what I’m about to tell you: neither the player with the 8s nor the aces should split in this situation.

Here’s why: With such a preponderance of high cards on the table, what are the odds that the dealer has a low card or ace in the hole? What are the odds the dealer will get another favorable low card or ace to avoid busting when taking any hit cards needed?

What are the odds the players with the 8s and aces will get the cards they need to win?

The answers to all the questions above are to be seen in the Calculator graphic. The players and dealer—not taking into consideration any cards the players might take—have nearly 3-to-2 odds of getting a low card or ace. So no matter how you cut it, the players will likely get unhelpful cards and the dealer will have a less-than-normal likelihood of busting (normal for the dealer 4 being 43 percent).

When the dealer’s 4 achieves a score, it on average reaches 19.01 points, which is high for any up card. Here, the likely score will be higher. The players with the 8s and aces will likely wind up with subpar scores and lose both hands to the dealer— hence the wisdom of not splitting those hands here.

The 8s are likely losers, split or not, and I’d surrender them if I could. The player with the aces should keep that pair together and hit until a nice high soft total is reached.

You can’t bring my Calculator with you to the table but it makes a great practice tool. And this situation, with so many high cards, doesn’t need a genius to figure out. You don’t need exact numbers to see this at the table and know immediately what to do—and what not to do.

End of an Era for Gambling Mecca?

Once the nation’s second-largest gambling market after Las Vegas, Atlantic City is experiencing an alarming decline, due in part, say industry analysts, to an oversaturation of the market in the Northeastern United States. As we reported last month, Vegas still holds supreme, but the No. 2 position has been taken over by Pennsylvania, leaving Atlantic City in the dust.

As of January of this year, 12 casinos were up and running in Atlantic City. In several months, that number could plummet down to only 8. The Atlantic Club closed in January, the Showboat is closing in August, and the Revel is expected to close next month as well if a buyer can’t be found in bankruptcy court.

But the most shocking closure could come on or around September 16. That is when a spokesperson for TRUMP Entertainment Resorts told The Associated Press that it expects to close the doors of Trump Plaza, a mainstay casino in Atlantic City since it first opened in 1984.

That closure could be crippling for Atlantic City. With the fall of Trump Plaza, nearly a third of the city’s casinos would be shuttered, with nearly a quarter of the city’s gambling workforce joining the ranks of the unemployed—Trump Plaza alone employs over 1,000 people. While every effort is being made to find a buyer, it is unlikely at this point that anyone will step up to the plate by mid-September.
