Ky-Mani Marley, son of the legendary reggae artist Bob Marley, brings his new generation of reggae music to Sky City Casino Hotel on December 21. Joining Ky-Mani is Marlon Asher, a popular Trinidadian reggae singer with hits like “Ganja Farmer” and “Fit and Strong.” Ky-Mani’s 1996 debut album, Like Father Like Son, included the hit single “Dear Dad,” which topped the British reggae charts. He has released six albums, including Radio in 2007 and Evolution Of A Revolution in 2013. Although Bob Marley’s tenth child, Ky-Mani grew up estranged from his internationally renowned family— without the power, wealth, and influence they enjoyed. Ky-Mani says, “When I would visit my siblings, it was like night and day. I’d be coming back home [from Kingston] from two weeks of helpers, cooks, gardeners, and a lawn man to bathing and cooking outside in our front yard [in Falmouth, Jamaica].” Marley played the lead role in the popular underground Jamaican
film Shottas, and he went on to play the lead of Kassa with co-star Cherine Anderson in One Love, a romantic comedy. Ky-Mani established the Love Over All foundation in November 2008 that benefits youth development programs that focus on education, music, and sports. In addition to supporting numerous educational initiatives, Love Over All also raises funds for sicklecell anemia and diabetes research. You remember when I was little and you came to that Army Surplus store and a lot of us were in line to see you? Then, when I got to sit with you and you asked me what I wanted for Christmas and I told you I wanted a bicycle—no, it was a tricycle—and you said yes, I’d get my trike? Then Christmas morning came, and guess what? No tricycle. What you got me was a Slinky. I think I still

A lot of my buddies, guys and gals alike, they like to go there too. They’re all nifty and the casino people, they treat you real good. But, you know Santa, I need your help. You see, I like to play slots and blackjack and sometimes when I’m playing I wonder if I’m doing it all like a smart guy, or maybe I’m just a bozo, I don’t know. So here’s my proposition: What I would like for Christmas is some solid advice on the slots and blackjack. You do that for me Santa, and I’ll call us Even Steven on you stiffing me on the tricycle. For good measure, you know I been good all year; fact is I been good for the last three years, ever since that lady with all the tattoos broke up with me because I wouldn’t stamp her name on my arm. What was her name? So, is it a deal? Your friend, Sammy K. DEAR SAMMY, O.K., it’s a deal. Let’s start with the slots. Now, you know playing the regular slots, three- and five-reelers, there is really no skill involved. It’s all random. But that doesn’t mean you just sit and mash buttons, Sammy. Read the pay table; learn all the symbols and icons and what it takes to win bonus spins and credits. And don’t play all the slots. Find one or two you
like and commit to memory the pay-offs and play max coin, especially if it’s a progressive. Sammy, if you can’t afford to play max coin then go to the Bingo Hall and buy some daubers. Now, the best bets on the slot floor are the video poker machines. However, these take skill. Which means that you the player, Sammy my boy, must exhibit skill in poker. This is why video poker machines have the highest payback percentages of all machines on the casino carpet. Take your pick, Jacks or Better, Double Bonus, Double-Double Bonus, and the killer of them all, Deuces Wild. Among the 20 best bets in the casino, all four of the video poker machines are there. None of the regular slots can be found among the crowd. As for blackjack, it remains the best bet in the gaming hall . . . if you’ve a great memory and remember which cards are out there. If you are a good bridge player you’ll do very well at the blackjack table. The next two tiers of blackjack play are the Ultimate Basic Strategy and, at the bottom, the complete novice, whose strategy is to get as close to 21 as possible. Sammy, please remember that the goal in blackjack is not to get as close to 21 as possible. The goal is to beat the dealer, make him go bust. A friend of mine is fond of saying, “Figures lie and liars figure.” And I often say that that phrase describes the old school blackjack writer’s use of math as well. A blackjack pundit wrote a column recently in which he urged you to always split 8s, no matter what the dealer up card. The idea, I guess, is you’re supposed to be happy throwing good money against bad (increasing your bet into sometimes losing situations) because, in doing so, you’re hoping to lose less over the course of 10 lifetimes of playing blackjack. That’s wacko. And the researchers who created the old school methods admitted they did not test for betting variations in devising strategies. They’re assuming you’re placing the same bet every round! That’s ridiculous. Few players play that stupidly. The old schoolers don’t take into account the fact that monetary losses with unusually large bets when splitting 8s can be especially devastating and hard to recoup. But I say: “Look at the math, stupid!” Versus the dealer’s 9, 10, and ace, for example, each of your split 8s have nearly 2-to-1 odds of losing. Split twice and your overall losses versus the dealer’s 9 would be 56 percent; your overall losses would be 75 percent with a third split. Split 8s twice versus the dealer’s 10 and you’ll suffer 66 percent losses; your overall losses if splitting a third time would reach 87 percent. Because the “Weakened Ace” (my term for the dealer’s ace when it does not achieve a blackjack - that is, the Ace you face when you have a turn to make) is a bit weaker than the dealer’s 10, the numbers are a little bit better but still bleak when facing that card - 49 percent and TOP TEN CONT, FROM PAGE 14 At the same time, he was an avid gambler and he was a fanatic about gambling, particularly about draw poker. Once he knew he was being duped he’d pull out his Colt and knife and challenge the person by saying, “take the pot.” Tragically, Hickok was killed when he joined a poker game and a group of conspirators who had planned his death had him shot. It is said he developed many enemies when he joined General Jim Lane’s “Red Legs,” a vigilante group whose purpose was to abolish slavery in the south. Hickok was shot in the back of the head with a .45 caliber revolver and when he toppled backward in his chair and his cards dropped to the floor, they included a pair of aces and a pair of eights and became known as the famed “Dead Man’s Hand.” 4. Casanova de Seingalt Today when we think of the name Casanova, we tend to think of a reckless womanizer; however, Casanova was a
65 percent respectively. Do you want to put more money down in a nearly 2-to-1 losing situation? That’s the first question. Poker players understand that you have to be in it to win it - that is, if you throw away all your chips, you’re out of the game. You have to preserve your chips. And there’s another factor to consider which the old schoolers fail to tell you: if you know how to analyze the cards, if you use your eyes to see in other words, you can actually figure out when it’s especially stupid to split 8s and save your money. For instance, look at the card situation I’ve provided here. What is most likely to occur to the third baseman’s 8s and what is the dealer’s most likely outcome? Take a moment to figure it out. Quick answer: there are five players at the table and with the first baseman’s split aces, the round almost plays like there are six players. So by the end of this round, there should be five or six 10s on the table, in a balanced situation. How many 10s are there now? With the imbalance on the table, 10s are most likely to fall on the third baseman’s 8s, and a 10 is the most likely dealer hole card. So the player most likely will get two 18s and both split hands will lose to the dealer’s most likely hand of 20 points. Was this really an imbalance into which you should split? And even without the imbalance, do you accept the nearly 2-to-1 odds you’ll be throwing your money away splitting 8s here - doubled with splitting once, tripled when splitting twice, quadrupled when splitting three times? It’s your money.

He lived a robust life of gambling and was known as the “merry king.” Games of chance became a focus of life in his court. The love of gambling spread not only throughout England but accompanied the later Colonists to North America (where they found out that the indigenous people had their own games of chance, too). Dear Mark: I favor the joints out West where I can still find a hand-pitched game of blackjack. Even with an occasional “card down” or “one hand on the cards, please,” I prefer it to the salvo of a shoedealt game. I’ve been to Atlantic City a few times and can’t find anyone pitching cardboard. All I find are shoes that don’t fit me, and I don’t like to limp. Is there some law or something against it? —Randy In the past in Atlantic City, Casino Control Commission regulations had mandated that all the casinos be required to deal blackjack from a shoe. Today, some casinos offer a single-deck blackjack game. The problem, Randy, is that these single-deck games only pay 6-to-5 when you get a snapper rather than the standard 3-to-2. This raises the house edge on this game to at least 1.58 percent. Warning: Never play on this game! Unlike Las Vegas, Atlantic City casinos cannot
ban players from counting down the deck, so management relies on shoes to thwart counters. They can also limit the size of your bets, not allow mid-shoe entry, lop off three decks with the cut card, and shuffle up anytime they suspect a player of counting. The last time I was in AC, I was on a rare $5 game, bumped my table minimum bet up a half dozen times to $25, and got some of the above “special” treatment. Since they were in no mood to offer any grub for my play, I politely thanked the dealer and off I went to my go-to spot every time I am in Atlantic City: The Irish Pub for some Jersey Crab Cakes and a couple pints of Guinness. The best part about gambling, Randy, is that you can walk when you want to. In my case, it was only 100 yards in from the boardwalk on St. James Place. Speaking of displeasure for the shoe game, there was an incident in Atlantic City in the 1980s involving Frank Sinatra. On December 1, 1983, while gambling at the Golden Nugget Casino, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin browbeat a dealer and a pit boss into breaking New Jersey law by making the dealer hand-deal the cards instead of dealing them from a shoe. The New Jersey Casino Control Commission didn’t find it so funny, so they fined the Golden Nugget $25,000, which Sinatra eventually paid out of his own pocket. Perhaps no harm no foul for the casino; however, it wasn’t so amusing for the workers in-

volved. Four employees, including the dealer, a supervisor, and a pit boss, were suspended without pay. When the only game in town is a shoe (multipledeck) game, you do give up more of an edge to the casino. Wherever you play, just make sure you play the most straightforward game you can find, one that offers a 3-to-2 payoff on a blackjack, with fewest decks, and at a limit you can afford. This is your best way to shrink the house edge.
