Womack just announced a new album, The Way I’m Livin’, as well as a European tour beginning in 2015. Enjoy the incomparable soulful baritone of Michael McDonald this holiday season, when the renowned vocalist plays Isleta Resort & Casino on December 19. McDonald has won five Grammy Awards as both a solo performer and as a member of classic rock band The Doobie Brothers. He also won accolades for his vocal work on the Steely Dan hit, “I Got the News.” During his tenure with The Doobie Brothers from 1976 until 1982, McDonald lent his distinctive vocals to what would become some of the band’s best-known songs, including “Takin’ It to the Streets,” “Little Darling,” “Minute by Minute,” and “What a Fool Believes.” The latter, co-written with Kenny Loggins, became a No. 1 single in the U.S. and earned McDonald and Loggins a 1980 Grammy Award for Song of the Year. McDonald’s mid-1980s collaborations resulted in additional hits, including “Yah Mo B There,” a duet with James Ingram, which won the 1985 Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. He followed that up with “On My Own,” a duet with Patti LaBelle, which reached No. 1 on the U.S. charts in 1986. In 2003, he earned two Grammy nominations for his tribute album, Motown. San Felipe Casino Helps Support Local Charities Through its “Season of Giving, Pay it Forward” Program

Bill Previtti, New Mexico’s “Mr. Casino” There is a reason why Bill Previtti is known as New Mexico’s “Mr. Casino.” Not only was he instrumental in helping to pass legislation legalizing Indian gaming in the state, he has remained one of its most tireless advocates ever since. It began in 1985 when, as a veteran, Previtti decided to join the American Legion and then later the VFW. Almost all of the veteran and fraternal clubs in the state had anywhere from several to dozens of video poker machines. And while they technically were illegal, most jurisdictions looked the other way. Their feeling was, “These are veterans. They’re not causing any harm. Besides, we have real crime problems to deal with.”

However, tribal leaders around the state took notice. They already operated legal bingo operations, but wanted to offer more to their visitors. So, they thought, if other organizations can have video poker machines, so could they. Which led to a movement to legalize gambling as a whole throughout the state. Members from a variety of veteran and fraternal clubs formed an association to promote the legalization of gaming—and named Previtti as their president. A PR ace who once served as New Mexico State Governor David Cargo’s press secretary, Previtti went right to work writing, producing, and voicing a series of statewide radio commercials urging legalization.

He and his team also met with vets and fraternal club members to advise them on how to lobby their local government representatives and write letters to the state’s governors. The 12-year campaign worked. “Governor Gary Johnson told me personally after his winning election that he would sign any bill legalizing gambling in New Mexico,” Previtti recalls. “And he kept his word.”

This month, we bring you something a little different. I’d like to recognize Billy for his many contributions to the people of New Mexico, and to share this amazing story from 1966 with you all. t was the winter of 1966, and I was serving as press secretary to Governor David Francis Cargo. Frankie Mello, Darnell Lincoln, and I were heading home from Las Cruces in Darnell’s slick Chevy wagon. As members of the state’s Motor Vehicle Division, Frankie was its Deputy Director and Darnell, or “Linc” as we called him, was in charge of all the inspectors and vehicles. The pair had met as medics in Korea, and were still active in the Army Reserve. Frankie was a fire hydrant-sized, fun-loving rascal out of Angel Fire. Imagine Lou Costello, only with brains. Darnell was a chiseled Michelangelo statue of black granite. His family ties went back to the Buffalo Soldiers; his forebears rode with Black Jack Pershing. His mom and dad were retired reservation-based schoolteachers. They taught back in the day when African-Americans with a fistful of diplomas had a better chance of being struck by lightning than landing a job teaching off-reservation tots. But there they were. We’d gone south for some state work, and to

do some Christmas shopping in El Paso and in Juarez. It was getting dark as we bent the speed limit north of Socorro, the Chevy loaded up with gifts for everyone in our families. The three of us went over the line on baby stuff—I had a new infant at home, and Frankie and Darnell had cherub-sized nieces and nephews. Darnell even bough a truck battery for his brother in-law. We were anxious to get home, to make that long stretch along I-25 fly by as quickly as possible. Frankie was up front, fiddling with the built-in two-way and chattering with state troopers and dispatchers, when all of a sudden out of the radio speakers came a crackled voice, saying, “We got a problem here . . .” The voice belonged to a state trooper, who, it turns out, had also served in the Reserves with Frankie and Darnell. The trooper, knowing Frankie and Darnell were also G.I. medics, told us there was a young girl in Belen who was going into severe labor pains. She needed help, like, now. “We could lose her, and the baby,” he said.

As we were rolling into the outskirts of Belen, the trooper was rapping to Frankie a mile a minute—in both English and Spanish—giving Frankie directions: “It’s a young woman and her husband; it’s their first kid. Both speak little English. There’s a lot of panic.” Apparently, the young couple had been taking care of this shabby goat-ranch-farm-habitat for a few dollars a month, out of which they had to feed the goats, and keep whatever was left over for themselves. They had no phone, of course; the husband ran to the neighbors for help, who called the state trooper. Then the husband lit a bonfire by the side of the road in front of the house so the trooper could find him. Now, I’m dying if I’m lying, we were there in three minutes. We even beat the trooper. While Frankie started talking to the daddy-to-be in Spanish, Darnell was in the cramped bedroom with the mommy-to-be. While my two buddies were making like midwives and I was taking inventory of the sad, sad surroundings, I heard the sound of car tires ripping up snowcrusted dirt and gravel. The trooper had arrived. We exchanged “que pasa’s,” I gave him a thumbsup, and he was off and spinning away. It was just moments when I heard the squeak of a tiny soul, and out came the young papa holding a wee infant boy . . . followed by a smiling five-foot, eight-inch leprechaun, and a six-foot, three-inch gladiator, wiping his brow with a floral-print hand towel. Frankie told the new dad what to do and said the trooper would send a doctor out in the next day or Continued on page 14

Then Darnell said, “I’ll back the wagon up to the door. You guys can unload. Get me the battery out of the back.” It took us longer to unload the wagon than it did for Darnell to deliver the baby. When we hit the road, we began to see the lights of Albuquerque. It was Christmas Eve. It was cold, it was dark. On the radio, Christmas music was playing. No one was talking. “Frankie,” I said, “I never got her name, or his for that matter.” “His name’s Jose. Hers is Maria.” It got real quiet again. We were taking inventory. Three wise guys, each of us out a hundred in cash we’d stuffed into Jose’s pockets, plus all the gifts left behind, all sitting in a tired and tattered little farmhouse outside Belen. But it was okay. I could see Darnell’s eyes glistening in the rear view mirror when he said, “Makes you feel real good, man, real good.” Then I asked, “Frankie, does Belen mean anything in English?” “Yeah,” he said, laying his head back and closing his eyes, “it means Bethlehem.”

The Downs Racetrack & Casino Announces Holiday Drive for Coats and Toys

The Downs Racetrack & Casino in Albuquerque has announced its drive for donations of coats and toys for children. “November marks the onset of cold weather and the start of the holiday season,” says Brian Roybal, director of marketing. “The Downs employees would like to give back to the community in a manner to benefit those in need. This is an opportunity to help local shelters by donating new or gently-used children’s coats, along with new and unwrapped toys.” Roybal points out that while children will be the primary recipients, gently used adult coats are also needed. Donations from both casino guests as well as the public at large are welcome. The Parrotheads of New Mexico, part of a nationwide group that celebrates all things Jimmy Buffet while also helping out in their communities, have already graciously donated 35 coats, with more on the way. “The need is significant in the area,” says Colin Howard, president, “and we are very happy to lend our support.” At Christmas time, an employee of the The Downs Racetrack & Casino will dress

as Santa and deliver wrapped toys to boys and girls at shelters in Albuquerque. Casino employees have also already donated over 30 new backpacks. The donations will benefit local children at Emmerson and La Mesa schools; The Albuquerque Rescue Mission, providing assistance to runaway young adults ages 12-17; the Barrett Foundation for women and children experiencing homelessness; and Joy Junction, which provides food, shelter, clothing, and safety to many of Albuquerque’s homeless. Donations may be dropped off at the casino, located on the State Fair Grounds just off Louisiana and Central, during normal operational hours through December 22nd. SAY NO TO SOLO BLACKJACK

There are many reasons why it isn’t smart to play solo against the dealer in blackjack. Let’s examine just one. Look at the solo and seven-player situations here (graphics 1 and 2). In the solo situation, the card analyst gets just three cards to analyze at first. Not enough information to make an intelligent choice. Plus, graphic 3 (a portion of my Probabilities and Imbalances Calculator analysis), shows that the composition of the un-dealt mix doesn’t change much per round playing solo (the norm for non-10s is 7.69 percent and for 10s, 30.769 percent). You lose a lot in predictability. (By the way, using the most popular card counting system, the Hi-Lo, you get a count of zero. That’s supposed to mean the cards are balanced. Are they? No way!) Also interesting: Aces are supposed to be good for players according to the Old School writers. Really? The same cards were dealt to the solo player and the seven players and the solo player got an ace next. Helpful? No. It led to a 13-point hand, a total more likely to bust. Sure enough,

the next card, a 9, busted the hand. The seven-player situation, though, shows you many more cards before your move, so your card analysis can be much more precise. Graphics 4 and 5 from my Calculator show you 54 percent of the un-dealt cards are low cards (which I define as 2s through 7s) and 38 percent are high cards (8s through 10s). (We count the aces separately, yet they act most like low cards because an ace will never bust the dealer.) So you can see that a seven-player situation gives you much more info, which makes your game choices more accurate. In the seven-player situation, both players with moves to make know it’s smartest to hit their 15-point hands (as opposed to surrender, an option, if available, the Old Schoolers would recommend) because the imbalance in the un-dealt mix is so rich in low cards and not likely to bust these hands. This greater predictability means you will win more in multiplayer situations.

It’s eight o’clock on a weekday evening, and I’m in the car driving 35 miles to a casino. I figure I’ll spend several hours there, return home around one o’clock in the morning, and be up at the crack of dawn to get ready for work. Am I nuts? Nope. I’m a recreational gambler, a pastime as respectable as any other. My actions aren’t much different from the guy who gets up when it’s still dark to make the first tee time, plays 18 holes, and then dashes off to make it in to the office for an eight-hour workday. In the mixed bag of entertainment pursuits, golfing and gambling both have their share of dedicated adherents. With several exceptions: The country club isn’t going to comp the golfer breakfast at the 19th hole, and he had to bid farewell to at least one Benjamin for green fees and a cart as soon as he stepped into the clubhouse. Me, on the other hand, I may say good-bye to old Ben at some point during my casino adventure, but certainly not as soon as I walk in the door. What’s more, there’s a chance my $100 will have been joined by some friends by the time I’m ready to leave. But winning isn’t everything. Just as the golfer gets enjoyment out of whacking a white spheroid around a hole-filled meadow in return for parting ways with Ben, I, too, am willing to part with my hard earned entertainment dollars for the thrill of testing myself against various games of chance (and often skill). Instead of fairways, I meander around the casino floor, where the only hazards are cold slots, and the only traps are video poker games with bad pay tables. What fortunes will this adventure hold for me? I survey the casino floor from afar and plot my move. I’m drawn to a bank of play-weary Game King machines—you know, the kind where the video screens are a little blurry and the colors are off. I find a vacant position and sit down, girded for battle with Benjamin and the cup of black coffee the cocktail waitress has kindly brought me. I select the quarter playing denomination and Double-Double Bonus Poker. Hmmm, a 9/5 pay

December 2014 table—not the greatest but not the worst. Benjamin quickly loses a fifth of his value and soon after that nearly half. In the meantime, the player seated next to me has abandoned his machine in disgust, but not before pounding the play buttons with ever-increasing urgency. Cold machines will do that to you. I, too, call retreat and head for another machine. Several Full Houses keep me alive, but the frustration of drawing three of a kind a couple of times and not completing the quad leaves me gasping. My Benjamin is a shadow of his former self. Something tells me to hunker down. On my next play, my first card is an ace and the rest garbage. I hold the ace and toss the rest, expecting little. Much to my amazement I watch a quartet of fours pop up, one by one. The electronic chorus plays until all 800 credits ($200) have registered. I’m back in the game. Shortly thereafter I’m dealt three aces. In the wake of my earlier disappointments, I hold little hope for the fourth one to pop up in one of the two vacancies I’ve created. But sure enough, it does. Another 800-credit tune plays. Of course, by this time I’m regretting the fact the fifth card wasn’t a “kicker,” which would have meant 2,000 credits ($500), the greedy, thankless bum that I am. My new neighbor, who sat down minutes before, looks over and offers her congratulations. Meanwhile, both of us hear a serenade coming from a machine at the bar that lasts long enough to mean only one thing: a Royal Flush. Ah, the stuff of which video pokerplaying dreams are made! It remains a dream for us, my neighbor and me, as she plays her $20 down to nothing and I’m hovering a shade above $400, thanks to my good fortune. Then out of the blue I’m dealt a Straight Flush in hearts, but all it does is give me ammo to play a while longer before I’m at my cash-out target of $400. I hear Benjamin and his newfound friends cautioning me from my pocket that “a penny saved is a penny earned,” but nevertheless I spend my final 45 minutes or so testing some multi-line nickel video machines to see if I can unleash a monster bonus round. Yeah, right. I call it an evening with three friends named Ben still intact. Before heading to the valet to retrieve my car, I check the points on my player card and discover I have enough for a sandwich in the snack shop. Take my advice, however: A hot dog with the works and an order of fries isn’t the best thing to order at midnight when you have to get up six hours later. All that entertainment and a positive return on my investment doesn’t happen all the time, but when it does it’s mighty satisfying. You know the feeling, right? In any event, losing on a casino outing still beats leaving a golf course with your five iron wrapped around an oak tree.
