Shandor, just 27 years old, has been called the world’s best Elvis look-and sound-alike. Shandor was introduced to Elvis Presley’s music by his mom when he was 12 years old. By the time he was 16, the talented teen was working as a professional impersonator. If rock and roll had fairy tales, the 3 Doors Down story would be one of the most popular. Their story begins in childhood, celebrating friendship, honesty, and making the most of God-given talents. It’s about having faith in your teammates, collaboration, trusting instincts and, once success is achieved, lending a hand to help others. On January 24, Isleta Resort & Casino is proud to have 3 Doors Down play at their Showroom. “I’ve got to make this life make sense” is a line from one of 3 Doors Down’s most popular songs, Away From the Sun and in many ways it sums up a key attraction to the band’s work: the directness of Brad Arnold’s lyrics. While their hit song Kryptonite led the way, Loser and Duck and Run became international hits: Loser topped Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart for 21 weeks and “Duck and Run” followed it with a three-week run at No. 1 on that chart. In 2002, BMI presented Arnold the award for Songwriter of the Year. Three new tracks appear on this Greatest Hits album, One Light, Goodbyes that Arnold wrote after a friend passed away, and There’s a Life. Chris Henderson explains One Light as a song that points out “everyone is looking for the leader to get behind so that change can begin.” Arnold adds: “It’s about giving the world more than you can take from it.” It could also be a description of 3 Doors Down’s Better Life Foundation which they founded in 2003 to help children in need of food, shelter and medical attention. “Every time we do something with our foundation or for the military, we’re just the catalyst,” Arnold says. Every year about this time, gamblers all over the world are making resolutions to do better, to play better, and to play smarter. It’s no secret this vow, if taken seriously, is the first and most important decision a gambler can make on how to “play” with his or her bankroll when in a casino. January 2014 there were a viable percentage of them that didn’t have a clue. They knew but one thing: they could find their way to the casino. That was about it. They played slots and won... once in a while. Believe it or not, this was the group casino bosses concerned themselves with. They wanted to help this band of bettors. Truth be said, the casinos wanted to give back. The fact was casinos were stashing more cash than they felt comfortable with. The feeling was they might end up killing the fatted goose. You know, it was like way too much of a good thing. So, how to give back? And then it came to them. Form a club, issue membership cards, put out a news letter. Let’s build a relationship with our players—all of them, no exceptions. O.K. It was said and it was done. Except for one thing, it’s a fact (like we didn’t know this)... all players are not created equally. Some players are more active than others; some play with heftier coin. So, the casino bosses built tiers, tiers of players, based on frequency of play, amount of play. And when the players used their player’s club card, like when they were in action, they would enjoy the benefits of membership. While at play they would gather points. Think of them as coins, nickels, dimes, quarters. As the points piled up players could use them for food purchases, tickets to shows, clothing and apparel, and in many cases casinos with travel centers allowed player points to put gas in the family car. And the casino bosses sat back and said, “This is a good thing we have done. We have given the players up to three percentage points back. This helps to level their playing field.” Yes, it was and is a good thing, except for one thing: a lot, and we mean a lot, of the men, the jocks, do not use their player’s club card. What jumps out at you on this board? Is it not obvious that there are far too many aces, that is, well above the norm? There are four. In a single-deck game that would mean no aces are due in the next round. The old schoolers, whose re-

search was done in the wrong way (using their computers’ random number generators to simulate the game in a non-card-like way, and then testing for the cards’ value to the player without testing for how well the cards do for the dealer), thought that it was best for the player when aces were overdue. But isn’t that the trump card, so to speak, for the dealer? When the dealer gets a blackjack, look out—most everyone loses (except those with blackjacks, who then push and do not win). And that’s just part of the story. My research shows that when the dealer gets an ace—whether it’s the first, second, third, fourth, or whatever card—the dealer’s overall busting rate is a paltry 8 percent. So would you really want to put more money into a situation where the dealer is likely to be

You say dollar machines return better than quarters, quarters than nickels. Does the denomination on a 9-6 Jacks-orBetter video poker game pay more on dollars than on quarters? Kathleen C.

On slot machines, Kathleen, yes, “generally speaking,” the higher the denomination the higher the payback percentage. Video poker differs from slot machines in that when you change the pay tables, you change the percentage return. A 9-6 Jacks-or-Better machine is the same game, with the same average paybacks, regardless of

whether you are playing dollars, quarters, or nickels. You identify the payback percentage on a video poker machine by looking at the pay table. Your example, 9-6 Jacks-or-Better game that pays 9-for-1 on full houses and 6-for-1 on flushes, will return 99.5 percent with expert play regardless of the coin denomination. Combining your skills with incentives like cash back and other comps, mathematically, you now have an overall return greater than 100 percent, making it a “positive expectation” game. Sadly, hardly any 9-6 Jacks-or-Better machines are on the casino floor these days. In their place, the casino now uses a virtual screwdriver and tightens the machine just by changing the flush and full house paybacks. By offering an 8-5 Jacks-or-Better game, one that pays 8-for-1 on a full house
