Myth, Reality, and the Roll of the Dice

P

atrick and Catherine O’Leary are in the Big Book on the history of America because they owned the barn that housed Catherine’s favorite cow that knocked over the lantern starting the great Chicago fire of 1871. If you believe that story, have I got a bridge for you. First of all, Katie—that’s what everyone who knew Catherine called her—said she was milking the cow when the fire started. Really? At 10 o’clock at night, she’s milking a cow? Give us a break. Katie further claimed that the cow accidentally knocked over the lantern. As opposed to, what, deliberately taking aim and kicking it over? At any rate, Katie took full responsibility for the cow’s actions, and became a hero for taking the bovine’s rap. End of story, right? Not so fast, Jack . . . This case was never officially closed. In fact, it went into the cold case files for 71 years. Stories kept rolling around the Windy City that Katie and hubby Patrick were gamblers, pretty good ones. It was also known that Mrs. O’Leary would rent out her barn as a site for illegal activities like rolling dice and dealing any number of poker games. During these soirees, Katie could be seen serving punch, cheese paired with thin slices of salami, and warm raisin and peanut oatmeal cookies. The lady knew how to entertain. All right, cut scene. The screen goes black. We do a five-count and the screen opens on a wide shot of Chicago, circa 1942. We are at the funeral of a successful business type, a real estate developer and stock trader, a well-liked, hard-driving fellow by the name of Louis M. Cohn. Louis was 89 when the curtain came down on his part in this play we call life. Among the beneficiaries in Louis’s will was Northwestern University, a highly respected school located in the suburb of Evanston, Illinois, which by the way for you drinkers in the audience, is the home of the WCTU— ladies who frown on drinking and drinkers. (Mind your manners.) Now remember, back in 1942 a dollar had some clout, a fin (five dollars for you folks in Portales) could get you and your favorite squeeze a swell dinner. Louis bequeathed the university $35,000, a princely sum in those days. In addition to the money, Louis requested the following statement be read during the reading of his will: On October 8, 1871, I was a young man of 18 who worked hard for my money and played hard with the money I earned. I enjoyed the gamble, particularly of dice, and a few of the card games. On that night in Octo‑ ber, I was in Katie O’Leary’s barn with a bunch of other fellows. There was a group playing cards and another of us rolling dice‑shoot‑ ing craps. During my third time to roll the dice I had made three passes in succession. On my fourth roll my point was a ten, a terribly hard num‑ ber to come back with. I had a lot of money in the middle of the pad, and desperately needed to make that ten to come away a very happy winner. It seemed like I rolled the dice a hundred times when suddenly on my last roll the dice bounced against the back of the pad and rolled to the center, and stopped. Two fives came up—ten! I was so excited I jumped to my feet and in so doing knocked over one of the lamps. In seconds the fire sped across the floor of the barn, ignit‑ ing straw and hay. All of us scooped our money and lit out for the barn doors, scrambling out into the cool fall night. That was it. It was me, Louis Cohn, who started the great Chicago fire. Katie O’Leary told us all to “keep our traps shut.” She’d take care of things. I guess she did. And I kept my trap shut. Well, until today. Signed, Louis M. Cohn, April 27, 1942

Gin Blossoms with Everclear

Saturday, March 11 • 8pm It was the early 1990s, and pop music was about to experience a major sea change. Good-time hair metal was out, and grunge—a fusion of punk, heavy metal, and pop—was taking over the airwaves. Many bands emerged in the wake, including the Gin Blossoms. Hailing from Tempe, Arizona, the Gin Blossoms fell on the pop end of the ’90s alternative rock spectrum with their folk–rock sound, proving that the era was as much about musical exploration as distorted guitars and growling vocals. Formed in 1987, the Gin Blossoms finally broke in 1992 with New Miserable Experience, which kept the band on the charts for almost three years thanks to singles like “Hey Jealousy,” “Allison Road,” “Mrs. Rita,” and “Found Out About You.” Their 1996 followup, Congratulations I’m Sorry, sent two more hits up the charts: “Follow You Down,” which spent nearly two months in the Top Ten, and “As Long As It Mat-

March 2017

ters,” which earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Performance by a Duo or Group. In 2006, the band reformed to record their third full-length album in over 10 years. Major Lodge Victory landed on the Billboard 200 and was the No. 10 Indie album of the year. Their next album, 2010’s No Chocolate Cake, shot straight to No. 1 on Amazon and hit Billboard’s Top 200 at #73 and the Indie chart at #14. This February, they went back in the studio to record a new album in time for release this summer. Another 1990s favorite, Everclear, will open for the Gin Blossoms. Formed in Portland in 1991, Everclear garnered attention by indie rock fans and radio stations alike with their first album, World of Noise. They exploded onto the international scene several years later with Sparkle and Fade, which produced their mega-hit single, “Santa Monica.” The band has toured and recorded pretty much continuously since, and in 2015 released Black is the New Black, which peaked at No. 22 on Billboard’s Top US Rock Albums chart. Fans will get a taste of what’s past as well as what’s to come as both bands hit the stage at Route 66 Casino Hotel on Saturday, March 11 at 8pm. Shinedown

Friday, March 31 • 8pm Shinedown built their name on rock songs both brutal in power and epic in scope. Now, with their latest album, Shinedown (Brent Smith, Barry Kerch, Eric Bass, and Zach Myers) veer away from that densely layered sonic palette and take a more direct approach. Featuring lead single “Cut the Cord”—a blistering track that shot to No. 1 on Active Rock radio—Threat to Survival finds the multiplatinum-selling band achieving their most powerful sound ever and offering up their most important album to date. Shinedown continually brings both staggering musicality and a powerful emotional complexity to their music. “There’s always been a certain level of positivity with Shinedown—that’s even where our name came from,” says Smith. “There’s a sense that everything that’s bad has a little bit of good to it, just like everything that’s good has a little bit of bad. The songs on this album address the reality that we’re all going to die at some point and that sometimes the willingness to survive is all you have. It’s about holding onto that sheer will to live, and getting through whatever might come your way because the legacy that you leave behind is what will carry you on to your next journey.” The multi-million-dollar sound system in Route 66 Casino’s amphitheater will perfectly showcase the ferocity of Shinedown’s music. Don’t miss out on this music experience. Purchase your tickets today by logging on to www.rt66casino.com

Blackjack Player Robs Bank and Returns to the Game

police, acting on an anonymous tip-off, visited Johnson’s address and found the car he used in the robbery parked outside of his house. Once inside, police found Johnson asleep on the couch, lying on top of large amounts of cash that he had stuffed between the cushions. Well at least this couch potato had the sense to “put aside” some of the stolen money. Maybe he was anticipating needing it for a rainy day? Regardless, Johnson now faces between 5 and 18 years for second-degree bank robbery.

What would you do if you lost a bunch of money at a casino? Well, in the case of one West Virginia man, instead of cutting his losses and calling it a day, he decided to raise more funds. Only he didn’t do it legally. Using his last $25 chip to hold his spot at the blackjack table at Mardi Gras Casino, Kerry Johnson then left and drove to a Charleston, West Virginia, bank, where he gave the teller a note stating he had a bomb and another weapon, and escaped the bank with $5,000 of stolen money. According the Charleston Gazette-Mail, Johnson returned to the casino and continued playing blackjack, where he apparently lost $500 of the stolen bank money. Several hours later, Johnson was arrested after

Kerry Johnson, who appeared in court Wednesday, claims he has no recollection of leaving a casino in Nitro, West Virginia, to rob a bank before returning to his blackjack game. (Image: Chris Dorst/Charleston Gazette-Mail)

DR. SEUSS DAY March 4

You would not, could not, must not miss, a day filled with fun, just like this! Bring the whole family to Dr. Seuss Day at Inn of the Mountain Gods and enjoy breakfast from 9am to 10am that includes pancakes, fresh fruit, and juice. Then from 10am to 1pm, all are invited to enjoy jumping balloons, an obstacle course, and reading circles featuring The Rainbow Fish, The Lorax, The Berenstain Bears and more. Tickets are $10 and must be purchased online. All children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. And one last thing—don’t forget—bring a blanket or pillow on which you can sit!

THREE DOG NIGHT March 11

Formed in 1967 around lead vocalist Danny Hutton, Three Dog Night took over pop music with an indistinguishably smooth soft-rock sound and flawless vocal harmonies. The band’s impressive streak of critically acclaimed albums was augmented by a record-setting streak of 21 consecutive Billboard Top 40 hits featuring the No.1 singles “Mama Told Me Not to Come,” “Joy to the World,” and “Black and White.” Tickets to see Three Dog Night’s March 11 performance start at $20.

DAUGHTRY March 17

Daughtry was formed in 2005 following lead vocalist and songwriter Chris Daughtry’s shocking elimination from season five of American Idol, and they immediately released their self-titled debut album which spent a staggering 176 weeks on the Billboard 200. Their second album, “Leave This Town,” peaked at No.1 on the Billboard

200 before reaching Platinum certification, while 2011’s “Break the Spell” reached No. 8 on the Billboard 200 with a gold certification. Their most recent release, Baptized debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard top 100 charts. Tickets start at $35 for Daughtry’s March 17 performance.

DOKKEN WITH SPECIAL GUEST LITA FORD March 18

Dokken found the most success in the mid 1980s following their debut album Breaking the Chains in 1983, which gained the band a cult-like following despite lagging record sales. Following their debut, Dokken released three platinum albums in a row: 1984’s Tooth and Nail, 1985’s Under Lock and Key, and 1987’s Back for the Attack, which also peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard 200. Joining Dokken on March 18 is one of the best female guitarists of all time, Lita Ford. Her 1984 self-titled album peaked at No. 29 on the Billboard 200 and earned platinum certification bolstered by the No. 8 single “Close My Eyes Forever,” a duet with Ozzy Osbourne. Tickets for Dokken and Lita Ford’s March 18 performance start at $30.

za, where judges will select a male and female winner to take home $200 and be the judges for the Pond Skim starting immediately after. As for the Pond Skim itself, willing participants will fly down Capitan to pick up enough speed

to skim across a small pond dug out in the beginner’s area. Each contestant will be judged on distance and style, with the winner being awarded $100. Participants can register online at SkiApache.com or at the ticket booth.

March 2017

Dear Mark: In a previous column you mentioned that it was impossible to count cards on a continuous shuffle machine. Can you instead count cards on a video blackjack machine, since single-deck games are a preferred choice to count cards on, and there is no one standing over you to bother your play or ask you to leave the game? —Jim G. You are on to something, Jim, that of controlling your game environment without the hassle of some pit bull running you off the game—but it’s still not going to work. Your biggest obstacle is that the rules of the video blackjack machine in the casino where you most likely play have one little deviation that will turn a winning session into a losing one: what you get paid for a blackjack. Those one-player video blackjack games, which have been around forever, typically pay even money instead of 3:2 on blackjacks. Then, they are usually dealt from a single electronic deck, which also works against you because that single deck is shuffled after every hand rather than playing to a virtual cut card and then reshuffling. So how much is being paid even money for a blackjack going to cost you? Because

“Almost all life depends on probabilities.”

CASINO ENTERTAINER • 21

you can expect a blackjack every 21 hands in live play, the loss of that bonus will cost you an additional 2.3 percent. Considering that a live blackjack game has a house advantage of less than .5 percent to the knowledgeable player, this one rule change alone is far too costly, even for the best-of-the-best card counter. When playing under these conditions, what video blackjack will do for the Average Joe, Jim, is make for an excellent, low cost, practice session partner where you can work on basic strategy.

Roulette Wheel’s Fortunes Hinge on Many Factors By John G. Brokopp The roulette wheel has been the subject of studies regarding its integrity for decades. Whereas slot machines are governed by microprocessor units, com-

Contact him at jgbrokopp1@gmail.com puter chips, and integrated circuitry, and cards and craps have a foundation based on mathematical probability, roulette is run by a dealer who operates all aspects of play manually. The game is played on a wheel made of metal and wood. The wheel is sub-

ject to wear and tear. The operator is subject to human frailties. Could the result be a possible disruption of the random nature of play? Among the factors that make roulette vulnerable are these: Under absolutely perfect and unbiased conditions, the wheel itself would have to be flawlessly balanced, the pockets (where the ball drops) uniformly structured and surfaced, the frets (the barriers between the pockets) uniformly resilient and resistant to wear, and the dealers incapable of consciously or unconsciously controlling the ball. The very nature of the roulette wheel, including its physical structure and the human element, makes all of the above factors subject to fallibility. For instance, the shape of the ball pockets is the single most influential factor in how a moving ball reacts to finding its final resting place in a number, but these deep pockets—as well as the frets—are subject to inconsistent wear. As such, biases and inconsistencies can develop, and open up opportunities for sharp players to exploit the biases, both human and mechanical. Brand new roulette wheels are incredibly expensive, which is one reason why they remain on casino floors for such a long time. A ma-

jority of them undergo occasional refurbishing, especially in the larger casinos, but it’s still possible to find very old wheels in some of the smaller off-the-strip and downtown locations in Las Vegas. Still, even if one of these older wheels has a bias, unless you’re a regular at that particular location, it will be difficult to detect. Picking up a bias requires “clocking” thousands of spins of the wheel, and even then you may enjoy only a slight advantage. Realistically, if a major bias existed and players started taking advantage of it, the wheel wouldn’t last long on the casino’s floor. Short of clocking a particular roulette wheel in an attempt to pick up bias, the only way to play the game is to hope luck will be on your side. There is no skill involved, although wise money management (as always) will play a major role in whether you walk away from the table happy or sad. Play conservatively at first, using the even money and 2-to-1 propositions in an attempt to build up your stake. If you are successful in getting a little bit ahead of the game, then it’s fun to start playing the numbers “straight up” and hope to cash in 35to-1 if your number hits.

ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 19) This is a period of healing before your birthday next month. You will take time to reflect on what you are truly trying to accomplish financially and professionally. The planets Venus and Saturn are in a retrograde position, bringing back past relationships and opportunities.

CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 22) The Aries planets align in your work zone, making this a very productive time for you to show leadership skills and get noticed. It may be that you started a new job and need to overhaul the entire department or set a new standard. Romance and socializing is adventuresome all month.

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 23) The planet of luck and opportunity has been retrograding in your sign, giving you pause to figure out a more realistic financial plan if you have been blowing your budget. It might also make sense to brush up on your skills and become more marketable if you want to get ahead.

TAURUS (APRIL 20 - MAY 20) The planet Mars enters your sign on the 9th, giving you plenty of energy to do whatever you have been neglecting. So, it’s time to get the house organized, start a new project, or get back to exercising. The full moon on the 12th opens up your love life and travel plans.

LEO (JULY 23 - AUGUST 22) This is a very productive period during which you will finish many projects on your home that you didn’t have time for before. The fiery lunar vibrations compel you to finish everything you started a year ago. The retrograde planets bring back family and friends for a brief visit.

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 24 - NOVEMBER 21) This is a tricky month that may be filed with many “stop and go moments” because of the retrograde motion of the planets. You may be picked to do some traveling for the company over the next three months. Your professional performance and expertise pays off later.

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 21) You might be considering changing direction with so many planets in your 11th house of the future. The cosmos gives you an impulsive energy to go on a different career path, retire, or start a new job or business. This is a cycle of breaking out after being held back.

VIRGO (AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 22) Your relationship sector is ignited at this time, and you will take center stage socializing and networking with those that can help you achieve your dreams. This goes for your love life as well, so if you have been going solo this may be your chance to meet a permanent mate.

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 - DECEMBER 21) You will catch a break from your heavy responsibilities and get out and socialize, date, and even fall into some extra cash. You are in the mood for fun and the stars give you a VIP pass to break out and take a chance again on romance. Legal matters and taxes need review. CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 19) Major life changes are highlighted with a possible relocation, relationship dynamics, and financial decisions. It might be time to move on if circumstances aren’t working out and not waste any more time. You are in the process of getting back on track and feeling empowered. AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 19) You are advised to be cautious with spending as you may have buyer’s remorse. Examine if what you are purchasing is necessary or something you may never use or is not practical. Domestic situations and family dynamics are not easy, so avoid taking a side and stay neutral. PISCES (FEBRUARY 20 - MARCH 20) Happy Birthday, Pisces, and lucky you! The recent solar eclipse occurred in your sign in February and lasts for about six months. This is an aspect of great creativity and vision, propelling you to go forward with any plans that have been uncertain. Expect to feel grounded when it comes to money and security.
