THE LUCK OF A LOSER

A long time ago, when I was barely into my 16th year on earth, Uncle Mike—my mom’s older brother— took me to sea. It was nearing the end of WWII. Uncle Mike was a First Mate in the Merchant Marine, which meant he was responsible for the safety of the merchant vessel operations, and he reported directly to the captain. Most times the captain of the ship stays up on the bridge. That’s where the big wheel is. But he doesn’t steer. Instead, he sinks deep into a super soft chair and, in between dozing off, keeps one eye on the young seaman steering the vessel to make sure the kid doesn’t end up on a reef or sideswipe an aircraft carrier. Captains hate when that happens. We were down under, Australia for you desert dwellers, and the city of Brisbane was before us. We were docked, in town for the weekend, having bobbled in on a Thursday afternoon. Our holds were empty, we were a floating ping-pong ball. We were there to pick up several holds of beer and several holds of medical supplies. The weekend was mine. One problem, though: I had come down with a rash of saltwater boils. On my back, up around my shoulder blades, and a few under both arms. Before I could enjoy the lights of Brisbane, I was to go immediately to a US Naval

medical facility, located not far from where we had docked. Two blocks later I was being worked over by two Navy medics, both nice guys. They wondered what I was doing overseas? Didn’t I know there was a war on? They kept saying I was the reason they were in the service, fighting for “kids” like me. I told them I was with my uncle; it was like him taking me to the zoo. They nodded like that made it okay. When I left I felt good, really good. The two medics told me I should go to this music hall on downtown Friday night. There was a terrific big band playing, dancing, and plenty of pretty girls. Sure enough, come Friday night I pocketed 50 bucks from our ship’s Purser, and off to the music hall I went. For me to tell you it was one of the greatest, most pleasurable four hours of my life up to that point would be an understatement. A night filled with music and dancing—I was

a jitterbugging madman—and me being asked questions about America, about Chicago, about Albuquerque, and me asking questions about Australia, and kangaroos, and boomerangs. And the girls—so many pretty, pretty girls. One of them, a tad older than most there, was one of the hostesses. She became something of a chaperon to me. I’ll never forget her: Nancy was her name. Nancy Fullerton. She taught me the Hokey Pokey (there are many people who say I was the fellow who brought it to America), and then, around 9:30pm, the bandleader came to the microphone and announced the final 15 minutes of the raffle drawings. It seems the folks who owned the music hall would hold raffles, which raised money for them and also funded a prize for three lucky dancers. Nancy explained everything to me. Well, hell, I still had $45 of my $50 left. I asked Nancy to come with me; I wanted to buy $25 in tickets. They were, as I remember, close to a buck a ticket. Anyway I bought $25 worth of tickets. As Nancy and I walked back to our little group of young ladies, I gave each of them a couple tickets. Nancy, I gave four. Right at a quarter to eleven, the music stopped. Three fellows rolled a barrel-shaped drum onto the bandstand. The bandleader made some opening statements. Then the three cash prizes were awarded: $500,

$1,000, and the princely sum of $5,000. There was a drum roll . . . and the first winner was—my God!—one of the girls in our group. She almost passed out, $500 was more money than she’d seen in her life. Another drum roll, and the bandleader called a name. It was Sophie, the girl I could really polka with, who was now $1,000 richer. Now came a much longer drum roll. The bandleader reached in the drum, swirled his hand round and round, pulled out a slip, and read the name. Nancy Fullerton. My Nancy. Would you believe it, there I was, a young man with a case of saltwater boils who was now the object of three beautiful young ladies’ affection. They tried to share their bounty, my gift—how many guys you know have not one but three super 10s trying to give them money?—but I said, no way, my memories are worth way more. Ladies, the money is yours. Period. Nancy walked me to where the street car would carry me close to my ship. We exchanged addresses. Promised to stay in touch. The war ended. I went to college. We didn’t stay in touch. I got married and my wife and I brought three children into the world. Three girls. Coincidence? I think not.

PLAYER PERKS ARE A BIG PART OF THE GAME Ever since gaming legend Benny Binion began the casino industry tradition of serving complimentary drinks to customers at his downtown Las Vegas casino back in the 1950’s, freebies, or “comps” as they are now known, are something that gamblers have come to expect as a matter of course. Today, those of us who play our hard-earned cash at slots or table games are usually rewarded for our loyalty with perks that range from free play to dinners out to hotel room stays. And comps are good for the casinos, too, who use them not only to grow business but also to create the kind of loyalty among existing customers that keeps them on property and away from the competition’s doors. Giving away overnight stays and dinners in the steakhouse also translates into guaranteed visits to the gaming floor. Comps make casino guests feel important, and that’s a customer service luxury that casinos can well afford. Used to be, comps were dispensed on a much more personal basis, usually directly to guests by a shift manager or pit supervisor. Today it’s a scientific procedure driven by computer databases and controlled by marketing and player development divisions. The accumulation of points based upon play and the prolific utilization of direct snail-mail communication have relegated comps for average players to the level of ordinary retail coupons. However, there are certain instances in which you can still benefit from personal, one-on-one communication, if you use a little imagination and follow some simple guidelines. If, for example, you’re a player planning a trip to a casino at which you’ve never gambled, contact the casino host prior to your visit. Mentioning your games of choice, your level of play, even the tier you’re at in the competition’s players club, is likely to net you a perk or two. Remember, competition among casinos is stiff, and management is always trying to win over new customers, especially premium players. Once you’re on property, ask for the host by name and make it a point to introduce yourself. Name and face recognition can mean a great deal more than an ID number in a database. Bottom line, casino hosts want to accommodate their guests, not alienate them. But they are not mind readers, so don’t be shy about politely speaking with them about your experiences—good and bad. They’ll appreciate the feedback and make every effort to encourage you to return. Finally, and I can’t state this often enough, sign up for and use the casino’s players club card. Dollars and cents decisions regarding comps are based upon the player profile that pops up when the host enters your account number in the computer. By using your players club card, you develop equity and make yourself eligible not only for direct mail comps but also for cash back. Players clubs encourage brand loyalty while providing the customer with added value. The method by which a player’s worth is determined is pretty much standard in the gaming industry. A gambler’s “theoretical loss” is a formula that factors in a combination of length of playing time, average wager, and the house edge on the game that’s being played. On the other hand, properties differ in the redemption value they place on players club points. So familiarize yourself with a casino’s rewards program and make your playing decisions

Is Free Slot Play Rigged? Dear Mark: When a casino gives free slot play, does the slot machine “know” you are playing with the casino’s freely given “money?” It seems that spins change when I put my money in the slot machine.
