According to Bloomberg News, President-elect Donald Trump named his inauguration committee on November 15, and he is engaging billionaires from the casino industry to plan and oversee the January 20 event. Among these moguls are Steve Wynn, the chairman of Wynn Resorts Ltd.; Sheldon Adelson, chairman of
the Las Vegas Sands Corp.; and Gail Icahn, wife of billionaire Carl Icahn (of Tropicana Entertainment). The committee chair responsible for overseeing all events on inauguration day is none other than Tom Barrack, executive chairman of investment firm Colony Capital and a former owner of Hilton casinos in
Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Both Trump and Vice Presidentelect Mike Pence will be sworn in on January 20 in a ceremony that takes place outside the U.S. Capitol. Additional events will include celebrations on the National Mall and a gala that evening. As Ron Reese, a spokesman for the Adelsons, commented to Bloomberg News, “Well, we got our first casino owner in the White House.” Or, rather, former casino owner. Trump Entertainment Resorts, Inc. was established by Donald Trump in the early 1980s as Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts, a gaming and hospitality company that owned and operated two casino/resorts in Atlantic City, New Jersey: the Trump Taj Mahal and the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino. Both have now closed their doors, and Donald Trump is no longer associated with Trump Entertainment Resorts, Inc., which is now a subsidiary of Carl Icahn’s business holdings.

PROMISES MADE PROMISES KEPT . . . Promises are what we make to one another, resolutions are like promises we make to ourselves. Politicians like to make promises. Promises are a lot like making babies; they’re fun to make, tough to deliver. Every year about this time gamblers all over the world are making resolutions to do better, to play better, and to play smarter. It’s no secret this vow, if taken seriously, is the first and most important deci-
sion a gambler can make on how to “play” with his or her bankroll when in a casino. Why do women win more hot seat drawings than men? When casinos give away cars and SUVS, why do the ladies win more than the guys? Is it because women are luckier than the fellows? Or is it because members of the feminine gender are smarter? That could be … no, I’ll walk out on the plank and flat say yes, in this case the ladies trump the guys. Let’s take gamblers as a whole: In the beginning, there were a viable percentage of them that didn’t have a clue. They knew but one thing, they could find their way to the casino--that was about it. They played slots and won…once in a while. Believe it or not, this was the group casino bosses concerned themselves about. They wanted to help this band of bettors. Truth be said, the casinos wanted to give back. The fact was casinos were stashing more cash than they felt comfortable with. The feeling was they might end up killing the fatted goose. You know, it was like way too much of a good thing. So, how to give back? And it came to them. Form
a club, issue membership cards, put out a news letter-let’s build a relationship with our players--all of them, no exceptions. O.K. It was said and it was done. Except for one thing, it’s a fact (like we didn’t know this)…all players are not created equally. Some players are more active than others; some play with heftier coin. So, the casino bosses built tiers, tiers of players, based on frequency of play, amount of play. Most of the women, the ladies, do use their club cards when playing casino games. So it figures, if there are more ladies in the hunt than men, the gals will get more trophies than the fellows. When asked why they don’t use their club cards, several of the guys said, “It wasn’t the manly thing to do…” What? It’s like guys not asking for directions. “It’s not the manly thing to do...” Sure, take the road to stupidville. Fellows, come on make the resolution: “This year I will use my player’s club card at all times!” It’s not only the manly thing to do, it’s a smart play. Happy New Year to all!

oute 66 Casino is proud to present Vince Neil, the legendary voice of American heavy metal band Mötley Crüe. One of the icons of the 1980s rock scene, Mötley Crüe built a bad-boy reputation as much for their off-stage antics as for their on-stage presence, reflected in hits like “Girls, Girls, Girls,” “Wild Side, and “Dr. Feelgood.” Neil joined Mötley Crüe as their lead vocalist in 1980, and soon thereafter the band released its first album, Too Fast for Love, followed by a string of hit releases throughout the decade—1983’s Shout at the Devil, 1985’s Theatre of Pain, 1987’s Girls, Girls, Girls, and their highest-selling album, 1989’s Dr. Feelgood. Mötley Crüe and Vince Neil parted ways in February 1992, due in part to Neil’s love of Indy racing. Eventually forming Vince Neil Racing, the rocker became a fixture on the Indy Lights open-wheel developmental series, but he retired from racing in 1992 after crashing his car during the third lap of a race in Long Beach. That same year, Neil returned to rock and roll, releasing his first solo album, Exposed, in 1993. It debuted at #13 on the Billboard rock charts and it sent three singles up the charts as well: “Exposed,” “Sister of Pain,” and “Can’t Change Me.” Two other albums followed, as did a short-lived reunion with his former Crüe band mates. When not on tour, Neil oversees the operations of his Dr. Feelgood’s Bar and Grill, with locations in West Palm Beach, Miami Beach, and Las Vegas. World Series of Poker Champ Finally Ordered to Pay for “Cheating” While poker champion Phil Ivey admitted that he and associate Cheng Yin Sun used a technique called “edgesorting” during a trip to play Baccarat at the Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City in 2012, he has maintained that it should not be considered cheating. Edge-sorting, say gambling experts, is a way
to mark cards by feeling their naturally occurring manufacturing defects. The player in no way defaces or places physical marks on the cards. Regardless, the Borgata cried foul, claiming that the technique changed the overall odds of the game from an approximate 1.06 percent house advantage to an approximate-
ly 6.765 percent advantage for Ivey. As a result, they slapped the 10-time WSOP champion with a multi-million-dollar lawsuit that has taken over four years to adjudicate. Ivey faced a similar case at the Crocksford Casino in London in 2013, when casino officials refused to release his winnings—nearly $12 million

But the Borgata verdict is in: Back in November, a federal judge ruled that while Ivey did not commit fraud, he did break the rules of New Jersey’s Casino Control Act. This “breach of contract” means Ivey must return over $10 million to Borgata. Ivey plans to appeal the ruling, telling a reporter for Mercury News recently, “What this ruling says is a player is
prohibited from combining his skill and intellect and visual acuity to beat the casino at its own game.”

Dear Mark: Every so often we hear about someone winning the lottery or hitting the grand prize on a progressive slot machine, in spite of the astronomical odds against them. How is it that someone, somewhere, always seems to get lucky? What I’m trying to get at is that these jackpots shouldn’t be hit, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. —Johnson T.
Any jackpot that has a probability of hitting— for instance, a Powerball ticket or a progressive slot machine—ought to eventually pay off if it is played long enough. When given a set of possibilities and enough trails, a favorable outcome should occur for some lucky bloke. That said, there are times that I am not entirely convinced that every gambling probability will come to fruition over time. One such surety unrealized is the Special Bonus Keno ticket that many casinos offer. All you have to do is hit 19 out of 20, and you win $250,000.

Sounds easy, right? Well, here is where I am going to need some convincing that this is even a possibility. Here’s the arithmetic, Johnson: If you were to play one keno ticket per second, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, according to laws of probability, you would catch 19 out of 20 once every 93,420,116 years. Oh, and the odds of hitting it? Drum roll please . . . two quadrillion, 946 trillion, 096 billion, 780 million to one. So, should you even be playing? As long as you realize that hitting “the big one” is a neverin-your-lifetime probability, I am not opposed to dabbling a few—and I mean a few—disposable dollars’ worth of Lottery Quick Picks for a shot at a once-in-a-lifetime possibility. However, limit those few-and-far-between dollars to when the jackpot exceeds the true odds of hitting it. With Mega Millions, that number is one in 258,890,850, which is an easier catch than the Powerball game at 292,201,338 to one. With jackpots in the millions, I can see how easy it is for players to inhale jackpot helium. But you need to ask yourself, Johnson, are the spoils worth the cost of the hunt? Then again, even if your chances of hitting the big one are a teensy weensy bit better than zilch, you cannot beat those cosmological odds if you don’t play. Although Mark Pilarski has retired from writing “Ask Mark” (see our October 2016 issue), we will still impart his wisdom on all things gambling-related by publishing his previously written columns.
