On a spring day in 1830, a farmer in rural Normandy was working > iÜ wi ` Ü i à « Õ} Ì Ã iÌ } >À`° Ƃ > V i Ì , > tile. Beneath it lay more than 50 pounds of silver. A treasure to be sure, but this one was particularly valuable given its vintage: Roman antiquity. Totaling around 90 pieces, from statuettes and vases to cups and places, some of the items bore Latin inscriptions which helped researchers pinpoint their origins—a Roman citizen’s offering to Mercury, son of Jupiter and messenger of the gods. All in all this treasure, which

includes intricately sculpted pieces, some gilded with gold, is among the most exquisite Roman silver to survive the period, and is currently on display in our backyard, or fairly nearby. Part of “Ancient Luxury and the Roman Silver Treasure from Berthouville,” the collection is on display at Getty Villa through mid-August, on loan from the National Library of France in Paris. Before leaving Getty Villa, take a saunter through the Herb Garden, a mainstay of an ancient Roman home. Located to the right of the museum’s entrance, the fragrant and leisured spot is rife with herbs commonly used during Roman antiquity, from Cretan oregano and lemon-scented thyme—used liberally in cooking—to sweet violet and citron, often used medicinally.

“I’m very fond of that house,” says Michael Lee. “It’s one of my favorite projects.” The Manhattan Beach architect is speaking of a large and wholesome Craftsman-style home that sits along a graceful bend of Monterey Boulevard. Just a short stroll to the Strand and sand, the structure, with its low-pitched gabled roofs and stone chimneys, looks perfectly at home amid a likeminded stretch of other smartly designed, up-to-date residences. � short stroll across the front yar�� bursting �ith blooming �o�ers an� healthy trees, and along a white-column porch takes you into the house, a �lace fille� �ith natural light an� s�ecial �etails�the tasteful kin� that pay apt tribute to the hands-on premise of the Craftsman movement. What I mean by that is you don’t waste any space on a boat. You have to use everything.” Lee carried this idea forward faithfully from the start of the project, which spanned a total of seven years. “It was a long process,” he says, chuckling. “A lot of good red wine was consumed during the process.” The former structure, a small home built in the 1930s, did have a few characteristics, notably a shrubby green tree and a charming porch, that were salvaged and integrated into the new design. Thanks to these, Lee says, “The home has an idiosyncratic funkiness that it would not have if it were a completely new house.” The u��ermost �oor is given over to three of the be�rooms� inclu�ing a master with glass doors that lead to a private porch where one can soak up fresh sea air and lots of ocean, yet remain discreetly out of the sight of �assersby on the street� The �oor�lan on this level offers the

option for bedrooms to be unobtrusively linked. For instance, from the master bedroom one can cross an exterior perch to reach a duo of bright bedrooms, also linked by a shared bathroom. One can choose—in the case of parents with small children, or a person who wants to expand the master suite to include a steps-away office or studio—to keep these linkages wide open, or shut them tight if overnight guests are expected. The overall floorplan keenly maximizes the generously sized lot while making full use of its natural surroundings, blessed by their close proximity to the Pacific Ocean. There’s a cozy outdoor sitting area at the front of the home (again, smartly obscured from view of the street), plus a large central courtyard with a fireplace and garden that adjoins both the kitchen and the family room. “You can snuggle up in front of the outdoor fireplace and drink wine while the kids and dog run around,” Lee points out. The scene takes less than an instant to conjure up, given the easygoing indoor-outdoor flow of the place. Cross the courtyard and there’s a secondary structure. The slender outpost houses self-contained guest quarters, complete with a bathroom, kitchenette and sitting deck. Climb a floor higher and there’s a rooftop deck, an ideal spot to take a break from the day. To feel gloriously outdoors yet safely contained. While there, looking over the blue ocean and rest of the house, with its lush garden, tidy eaves and stone courtyard, one realizes they’re in an entirely pleasant place, where it’s easy to occupy a room, or even floor of one’s own, while still feeling part of a larger, familiar whole. Prevention is the Thing “My mother, from a very young age, was adamant about sunscreen,,” says Holtz, a Southern California native with a beautiful complexion. “I always admired her skin and her secret was that she stayed out of the sun as a young girl.” SUNSCREEN. Essential, says Holtz, no matter how many—or few—candles are on your birthday cake. “Young women think, ‘Oh, I’m young, I have beautiful skin,’” she says. “And they do, but it’s important they understand how important prevention is.” Another tip: Make sure your daily application of sunscreen extends past the face to include neck and décolletage. EXFOLIATION. Help facilitate the turnover of new skin cells by exfoliating regularly. “What people don’t realize—and this goes for the body as well as the face—is that if you’re applying products to hydrate your skin, and haven�t exfoliated first� you�re applying those products to dead s�in�� �olt� points out. �xfoliating first will help your s�in absorb and get maximum benefit from great products.

HYDRATION. These days, everyone’s keen on getting enough water, but a great way to stay hydrated and keep skin looking supple is by eating water-rich foods. Some of Holtz’s favorite pro-hydration snacks? Coconut water, grapes, watermelon, citrus and cucumbers. RESTORATION. If you feel your skin is showing the effects of a sunand-fun South Bay lifestyle, look for ways “to nurture the skin and help repair it,” says Holtz. “Vitamin C is a really great ingredient that helps with sun-damage repair. “There’s a story to every one of these cars, “ says Earl Rubenstein, gesturing across the main exhibit room at the Automobile Driving Museum. Lined with neat rows of gleaming cars from a collection of over 150, the space holds vehicles representing nearly every decade since the birth of the automobile, starting with a spry 1886 Benz ÂœĂŒÂœĂ€Ăœ>}i˜] ĂŒÂ…i ĂœÂœĂ€Â?`½Ăƒ wĂ€ĂƒĂŒ ÂŤ>ĂŒiÂ˜ĂŒi` }>ĂƒÂ‡ÂŤÂœĂœiĂ€i` Â“ÂœĂŒÂœĂ€V>Ă€° Rubenstein—who’s not just the museum’s curator but its co-founder— is right. Each car does have a story, from the 1910 Daimler owned by Britain’s King George V to the 1955 Packard Caribbean that Howard Hughes plucked off the assembly line to bequeath to his wife, Hollywood actress Jean Peters. (“They drove it once and put it in the garage,â€? says Rubenstein of the glamorous behemoth with vivid pink side panels. “That car is all original, except for the license plate and tires.â€?) There’s a slew of muscle cars and a stealthy 1982 DeLorean DMC-12, recognized as the time machine from Back to the Future movies,

plus a few smart roadsters demonstrating the exotic cool that British automakers brought to the game mid-20th century. Highlights? All of them, even the sensible 1965 Studebaker Wagonaire with a retractable roof and the quirky AMC Pacer Coupe, which was marketed as “The First Wide Small Car� back in 1975 and had a base price of $3,200. Recounting what prompted him and co-founder Stanley Zimmerman to create the museum back in 2000, Rubenstein says, “When you go to most museums you have to stand behind the ropes. So we thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be different if we had a museum where people could come and get closer to the cars? What if we take the ropes down?’� Experiencing the cars in this way, one realizes that there’s more than just pretty cars on display at the Automobile Driving Museum. Whether chic or sensible, grand or downright fanciful—this collection is a potent showcase of over 100 years of engineering, design and reason, all rolled into one.
