4” x 4” x 4” Unit form
Fibonacci sequence To create a Fibonacci sequence, a 4” x 4” x 4” unit form consisted of an open form, asymmetrical design, mixed media, and a surface treatment. Once the design was finalized, the Fibonacci sequence was applied to 6 more unit forms, varying in size and then constructed them using a scale shift that mimicked the fundamental style of the sequence similar to that of a shell.

material exploration Tasked with exploring a material and manipulating it with actions from Richard Serra’s Verbalist, this project studies the various stages of a post-it. Folding emerged as the primary method of maneuvering the material, ultimately discovering its limits, scale, and how when shaped together they challenge gravity and react to light. The final structure is a result of chaos and heavy acts of folding giving way to a lighter less manipulated base.

four walls Using four walls, this project aimed to push explorations in how to effectively represent and develop space through orthographic drawing and model making. Locating an origami shape in the middle of the project, this formation aims to create a relationship between interior an exterior, with light infiltrating and infusing the space with reflective color from the pyramid. The model was built at a 1/4”=1’0” scale with accompanying drawings completed by hand.

Johannes Itten color wheel Using paint, a 12-scale color wheel based on Itten’s model was created. Each scale includes 2 steps of tints and 3 steps of shades. The ground was 12” x 12” with 7 juxtaposed circles using a compass. Using 6 basic colors consisting of white, black, 3 blues, 2 reds, and one yellow 12-steps/hues with 5 units were mixed.

Color Studies
Piranesi Using color and value to create atmosphere, form, and space, three color scenarios were created based on the secondary colors of purple, orange, and green. After developing these colors, an abstract composition was established using a symmetrical Piranesi image on a 12” x 14” ground. Using a sunrise and sunset color agenda, each side was painted to depict form and space.

saturation of color The color purple is associated with extravagance, tranquility, magic, and creativity. Paired together with a chocolate brown that evokes strength, dependability and ground with the earth, the two create a harmony within a space that is both bright with subtle warm undertones. Incorporated within a room, this brown hardwood floor acts as a neutralizer to the cooler hues of the purple walls ultimately acts as a grounding agent to counteract the airy whimsicality of the walls.

The adjacent image depicts the purity within lilac paradise paired with the dark and warmer tone of a rich brown. By integrating brown within the furniture frame, the color is continued and blends to meet the bright sky created by the painted bookcases. The images above further accents the playful and airy nature of the color where brown continues to ground by incorporation of rich hardwood floors, furniture and fabrics. The highest value of purple, nearly white adds a beautiful finish to accent trim and doors.

cool neutral palette Elements found in nature drive man made materials within this set of images. Cooler hues push through the Munsell System of gradient giving way to pairings with some lighter elements, further accentuating the drama created between an array of grays and blacks. When teamed with lighter values, depth is created, drawing the viewers eye.

monochromatic palette Touch, sight, overload, bright and encompassing, this material palette is inspired by the power of yellow. Known to spark bliss, this luminous color can incite a feeling of creativity and promise. Contrasting that bright hue, the deeper yellows lurk and diminishes the brightness of its booming counterparts. Transitioning from bright to darker tones, this monochromatic progression demonstrates the wide range of the color yellow.

sensory palette Whitecaps on the bay: a broken signboard banging in the April wind.
cassandra dimartino portfolio
Incorporating the words within the haiku such as cap, bay, broken, banging, and wind; each word I found had the ability to alter tone significantly, creating a wide range of emotions and vivid scenes.
Visualizing the emotions evoked from the haiku, I found myself feeling raw, aligned as one with nature, interacting with the destructive qualities of a manmade environment. Imagining where I would be when I encountered these elements helped me contrive the images in response to the textural qualities that each word from the mind map evoked. I found myself in contrasting environments, starting in the cold winter to the bay of a summer day.
The haiku itself transports it’s reader to the beach, during an April storm. When curating this sensorial material board, I sought to capture the essence of what one would do and find at the shore post rainstorm. Utilizing 8 materials found within my home, the objects embrace a warm neutral palette with contrasting deep hues of black and blue. Considering what colors one would come in contact with while walking along the bay, this subdued palette embraces the delicateness of nature, its weathering elements, as well as the softer colors found within a beachhouse.

shelter The overall creative precedent for this structure was the childlike notion of playing with toys in a park. The form is about how to bring simple ideas together (materials, structural, and lighting). This shelter is meant for conversation, lingering, accidental meetings, and enjoying the serene nature of the park. Lighting served as a form of ornamentation and played a significant role within my decision to used colored dichroic glass. This provided an interesting dialogue between the shelter and nature itself. The final deliverables included a 1”=1’ model, Plan, 2 Sections, and 4 Elevations.

loft gallery Creating both a gallery and a residential space, the action of folding and how it can create impacts through scale shifts inspired this loft gallery’s intention. Delineation of the space is achieved through nuanced folds within both casework and ceiling elements. Intimate pockets emerge where individuals can explore the art while becoming enamored within occasions of both natural and artificial light. Each area of the gallery loft provides moments to pause, while also being led directionally to programmatic areas of the space.

3711 Germantown Ave. This final studio project of first year was comprised of repositioning a property in North Philadelphia known as 3711 Germantown Ave. This four story building was originally built in the early 1900’s and recently vacated. The initial assignment featured conducting a comprehensive research phase to best understand it’s history, neighborhood, and current community needs. This completed design features a food typology based program with supportive community elements.
