2 Bâan YÄ y Brand Standards Manual

INTRODUCTION Brand message Bâan Yāy is a small, family-owned Thai cuisine restaurant that serves classic and simply delicious Thai food favorites featuring spices and ingredients brought back from our annual trip back to Thailand. Our name—directly translated to “grandma’s house”—reflects our values of exceptional service and cultural pride, and most importantly, our desire to make everyone feel at home. Bâan Yāy wants everyone who walks through our doors to get a taste of Thailand through our authentic food and feel the warmth and sense of family that is the definition of Thai culture. Our goal is to communicate a message of hospitality, warmth, and authenticity. We want every guest to leave feeling full, not just of food but of joy and happiness.

Purpose of manual This manual was created to help maintain the message Bâan Yāy wants to communicate to the SLO community and what we represent as a restaurant. Current and future handlers of our brand materials should refer to the components of this manual in order to maintain a consistent message of Bâan Yāy’s goals and objectives.

FAMILY OF MARKS

Bâan Yāy Brand Standards Manual 5

PRIMARY MARK The primary mark consists of the noodle bowl symbol and our restaurant name “Bâan Yāy” stacked vertically. It is the best way to describe Bâan Yāy and as such should be used whenever possible and in full color. The primary mark utilizes all colors in the primary color palette, found on page 26.

6 Bâan Yāy Brand Standards Manual

One color When full color printing is not available, the primary mark may be printed in one of any color included in the primary color palette, found on page 26. It is important to be mindful of the background the one-color mark will be printed on. One-color marks in “Mustard” and “Turmeric” will be more legible on darker backgrounds, and onecolor marks in “Cayenne” and “Anise” will be more legible on lighter backgrounds. One-color marks may be printed in black when color printing is not available.

Bâan Yāy Brand Standards Manual 7

Reversed out If the primary mark is to be reversed out, use any one color included in the primary color palette, found on page 26. Black may be used if color printing is not available. Note that the reversed out mark must adhere to a different minimum size than the full color and one-color mark.

8 Bâan YÄ y Brand Standards Manual

SECONDARY MARK The secondary mark consists of the noodle bowl symbol and wordmark “Bâan Yāy” placed in a horizontal orientation. It may be used when the primary mark is interfering with its surroundings or when adequate vertical space is not an option.

Bâan Yāy Brand Standards Manual 9

One color When full color printing is not available, the secondary mark may be printed in one of any color included in the primary color palette, found on page 26. As with the primary one-color mark, it is important to be mindful of whatever background the secondary one-color mark will be printed on when choosing what color to print it in. Black may be used when color printing is not available.

10 Bâan YÄ y Brand Standards Manual

Reversed out If the secondary mark is to be reversed out, use any one color included in the primary color palette, found on page 26. Black may be used if color printing is not available. Note that the reversed out secondary mark must adhere to a different minimum size than the original secondary mark.

Bâan YÄ y Brand Standards Manual 11

WORDMARK The wordmark consists of just our restaurant name “Bâan Yāy” without the noodle bowl symbol. It may be used when the primary and secondary marks are interfering with their surroundings or when the noodle bowl symbol already appears independently on the same application. It must be used with any one color included in the primary color palette, but “Turmeric” should be preferred. The wordmark may be printed in black when color printing is not available.

12 Bâan Yāy Brand Standards Manual

Reversed out If the wordmark is to be reversed out, use any one color included in the primary color palette, found on page 26. Black may be used if color printing is not available. Note that the reversed out wordmark must adhere to a different minimum size than the original secondary mark.

DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS

Bâan Yāy Brand Standards Manual 15

MINIMUM SIZES Primary mark The noodle bowl element is dominant compared to the wordmark in the primary mark. To preserve legibility of the wordmark, the primary mark, both in full color and one color, should keep a minimum size of 1" and should never be scaled smaller. If reversed out, 1.25" is the minimum size for the primary mark.

1"

1.25"

16 Bâan YÄ y Brand Standards Manual

Secondary mark The noodle bowl element and wordmark are aligned horizontally in the secondary mark, making both elements similar in height. Because of this, the secondary mark can be scaled down even smaller than the primary mark. The minimum size for both the full color and one color secondary mark is .60". If reversed out, .75" is the minimum size for the secondary mark.

Wordmark To preserve legibility of the independent wordmark, it should never be scaled down smaller than .60". If reversed out, .75" is the minimum size for the wordmark.

18 Bâan YÄ y Brand Standards Manual

SAFE SPACE Every time a mark is being used, there must be a safe space around all four sides to prevent other design elements from interfering with it. The safe space for all marks should be equal to or greater than the circumflex accent found above the letter ‘a’ in the mark. Be sure to keep the circumflex proportional to the specific mark being used at the time. This safe space applies to all versions of all marks.

Bâan Yāy Brand Standards Manual 19

INAPPROPRIATE USES The following are nine examples of alterations to the primary logotype that should not be made at any time and under no circumstances. These rules apply to all marks in the family of marks.

Do not change the opacity of the mark. The mark should always be printed in full color or, if color is not available, in black or white.

20 Bâan YÄ y Brand Standards Manual

Do not use unapproved colors in the mark. The only colors that should be used can be found in the primary color palette on page 26. White and black are the only colors aside from the ones in the primary colors palette that are acceptable only in the case of being reversed out or when color printing is not available, respectively.

Do not change the size of the noodle bowl icon in relation to the wordmark and vice versa. The relative sizes of the elements within any mark should be proportionate to each other.

Do not print the mark in white on a light background. The only time a mark can be white is when it is reversed out against the approved colors in the primary color palette, found on page 26.

Do not stylize the mark. For example, do not add a drop shadow or blur to the mark. The mark should always appear flat.

Do not disproportionately scale the mark.

Do not rotate, tilt, or change the orientation of the mark. The mark Wshould always remain either stacked vertically (as seen in the primary mark) or aligned horizontally (as seen in the secondary mark).

Do not print the mark in black on a dark background.

Do not warp or distort the mark.

IDENTITY SYSTEM

Bâan Yāy Brand Standards Manual 23

GRAPHIC ELEMENTS The noodle bowl The noodle bowl icon is the most important visual identifier of our business. This graphic element is always present in our business system and used in all applications. The noodle bowl icon stands independently, but be mindful that the wordmark must also be present somewhere else in the same application. It may be printed in full color or any one color from the primary color palette. Black may be used when color printing is not available. The noodle bowl graphic element should never be scaled down smaller than .50".

Kathryn E. McCormick Professor of Design Department of Art & Design California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo, CA 93407 November 2, 2017 Dear Ms. McCormick, Bâan Yāy exists to provide simply delicious, traditional, and authentic Thai cuisine featuring spices sourced from our annual trip back to Thailand. We aim to provide customers with heart-warming comfort food and a welcoming environment reminiscent of one’s grandmother’s house. We pride ourselves in our exceptional customer service, Thai cultural pride, efficient serving system, and simple, yet flavorful and authentic Thai food. Bâan Yāy’s short term goals include building a stronger social media presence, simplifying our menu, selling alcohol, modifying our restaurant layout and service system, updating the decor, and introducing promotions and discounts. Our short term goals contribute to our long term vision by giving us a starting point to continue growing as a business. Building a stronger social media presence will help increase engagement with the SLO community, especially with younger customers. Simplifying our menu will decrease wait times and may also increase the quality of our food, achieved by paying more attention to and only serving the most popular dishes so far. The modification of our restaurant layout and service system will increase space and efficiency, getting the busy customer in and out the doors faster. By introducing promotions and discounts, such as student discounts and a Happy Hour, we will increase foot traffic overall, but especially during non-prime hours. Details aside, the big picture of Bâan Yāy’s long term vision is to communicate a message of hospitality, warmth, and authenticity. We want every customer to walk in feeling welcome and leave feeling full, not just of food but of joy and happiness. Sincerely,
