YOUR NEW LIFE AWAITS Check out your housing options!

“ Much more than just a place

to study and sleep, living on campus is about learning, growing, and helping you develop to your fullest potential.” — Bill Langston, Dean of Student Development

The conversations that change your life are not necessarily going to take place in the classroom. They’re going to happen with roommates and friends, lingering over dinner at Wynee’s, while grabbing a latte at Tûtû’s, and hanging out in the lounge in Spivey late at night. More than a place to eat and sleep, living on campus is about getting connected—becoming part of a community. Sharing ideas and experiences is an integral part of the Florida Southern experience, and our spaces are designed to foster those kinds of interactions. That’s why you’ll find a variety of housing options, from traditional halls, to apartments, to theme-based living arrangements. And because your residence hall will be your “home away from home,” we’ve made sure that it has all the amenities you need for a comfortable and productive stay. Florida Southern is a residential community. Almost all students live on campus, and with living environments specially dedicated to first-year students, your transition to college life is sure to be seamless.

MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME

Joseph-Reynolds Hall

All-female, 170 residents Affectionately known as “JR,” one of the four original buildings on campus combines everything you’d want in a residence hall: history, personality, and functionality. The charming brick building is even more beautiful on the inside; white archways and picturesque chandeliers detail the lobby, along with plenty of comfortable couches and even a grand piano. Located directly behind the lobby, you’ll find the beautiful Eleanor Searle Drawing Room, an elegant space where many campus events and banquets are held.

YOUR SPACE. YOUR CHOICE.

In the heart of our campus community, you’ll find our first-year options. You can live in one of the historic stone residence halls or a modern, lakefront complex with its own kitchen. You can choose a co-ed or single-sex building. You can live in a learning community, or among other honors students. Whatever you choose, you’ll be moments away from classroom buildings, the library, the Wellness Center, and a variety of delicious dining options.

provide a wide range of options offering lake views, sleek furniture, and loft lounges.

This all-female housing option, is home to 170 women in a variety of rooms, ranging from singles to quads. Community life is big here—the women of JR form groups within the building as a whole and also within the “wings” and smaller hallways of the building.

If you’re ever looking for something to do, head down to the lobby. Every weekend there is something going on. Whether it’s a pizza party, movie night, or board game competition, you will build strong relationships with your hall mates and meet some of your best friends living in JR!

“ The lush garden, with benches and fountain,

between the two halls are a favorite hangout spot for first-year students.

Allan SPIVEY Hall

All-male, 170 residents Across the courtyard from Joseph-Reynolds, you’ll find our all-male option. “Spivey,” offers a traditional hall setting similar to the ladies’ counterpart. With the historic nature of the building, no two rooms are completely identical. Rooms are sized to accommodate single, double, triple, and quad living. Bathrooms are either inside the rooms (some have private baths) or shared communitystyle by no more than five residents.

Equipped with a large screen television and a pool table, you can imagine it’s where most Spivey residents spend their time. Of course the hall is also very functional; the lounge is furnished with tables for quiet study and there is a laundry room conveniently located on the terrace-level of the building.

You can participate in adventure trips, get a massage, take a cycling class, use the weight room, or check out a bike. Get involved: 80+ student organizations, festivals,

movies, concerts, picnics, lectures, service projects, greek life, and residence hall special events.

“ As a Resident Assistant,

I’m here to make Spivey a welcoming and comfortable environment to live, study, and just hang out. In your first year

here, you’ll discover your RA is a resource, an advisor, and a friend. My door is always open.” — Joshua Guevara; Cape Canaveral, FL

Catch a show: with multiple bands, orchestras,

Spivey residents tell us they enjoy the strong sense of community that this all-male hall offers. Resident Advisors often organize events in the lobby with free food and drinks, where everyone can gather and watch the football game or even just play some Xbox. choirs, and small ensembles on campus, visiting performers and artists, the Festival of Fine Arts is the artistic pulse of our community. Watch (or play!): 19 varsity sports, including

waterskiing, and tons of intramural activities, it’s always game on! Enjoy: Lakeland’s local restaurants, downtown

WESLEY & NICHOLAS HallS BaRNETT RESIDENTIAL LIFE COMPLEX

Co-ed, 235 residents Perched on a hill over gorgeous Lake Hollingsworth, the Barnett Residential Life Complex makes for an impressive site. These buildings—the newest residential options on campus—were designed by world-renowned architect and Frank Lloyd Wright enthusiast, Robert Stern. What’s more impressive however, is the view from the inside looking out. The views from the Wesley and Nicholas Halls are some of the most beautiful on campus. The Barnett Residential Life Complex has more than just a breathtaking view though; it is home to a close-knit and relaxed student community. Both males and females live in the halls, separated into gender specific floors. The bathrooms are privately shared between only two rooms. Nicholas and Wesley also offer a laundry room, student lounges, study rooms, and a kitchen. Wesley and Nicholas residents love to have movie and video game nights in their comfy quarters. Traditional events in the student lounge consist of Super Bowl parties, pizza night, or even potluck dinners that can be cooked up in the student kitchen. The co-ed halls create a unique and fun social atmosphere—you’ll easily get to know many people from your class in the Barnett community!

“ It’s incredible to wake up and

see Lake Hollingsworth out my window every morning.” — Kati Anderson; Hastings, NE

HOW WE SELECT YOUR ROOMMATE

Rest assured, you’ll have one thing in common with your roommate: they are just as nervous about sharing a room. National statistics indicate that more than 95% of entering first-year students have never had to share a bedroom!

If you decide you want to live with a friend, you must both request each other as roommates on your New Student Enrollment form.

The Office of Community Living makes room assignments based on the information you provide on your New Student Enrollment form. Every effort is made to pair you with someone who appears to have similar interests, study habits, and overall lifestyle. How we match you depends on how you fill out the form, so take the time to fill out the survey accurately. Please, don’t let Mom do it. In mid-July, you will receive an e-mail informing you of your room assignment and roommate. Take some time over the summer to get to know each other. While you may room with someone you already know, we recommend living with someone you don’t. Meeting new people is an important part of college life.
