BAR NAR D CO L L EG E THE MILSTEIN CENTER SKIDMORE, OWINGS, & MERRILL
The new library at The Milstein Center at Barnard College is a far cry from when libraries were sterile buildings full of books and dreadful acoustics. This stunning teaching and learning center brings together technologies and learning spaces in an interactive setting that convenes students and faculty, facilitates collaboration, fosters dialogue and links departments and disciplines across campus. Its library brings together current technologies and learning spaces in interactive settings, and its seven centers offer students the opportunity to explore areas such as design, media, movement, empirical reasoning and computational science. With lots of glass, open spaces and technology intensive spaces, Cerami’s challenge was to assure that there was just the right balance of quiet areas from which to read and study, while also designing dramatic interactive AV systems in this dynamic building. IT systems were designed to support high performance computing for technology intensive spaces, with flexible configurations, and ubiquitous yet invisible wireless coverage. Flexible classrooms were provisioned with large touch-enabled interactive presentation video screens. The Creativity Lab included very large format touch-interactive display, distance learning capability, and audio conferencing. CSC classrooms included large interactive videowalls with audio and video conferencing capabilities. The Creativity Lab includes the best in educational touch-interactive display, wireless video, and audio.

Cerami provided acoustical and audiovisual design services for the Vagelos Education Center at the Columbia University Medical Center. The Physicians and Surgeon’s Building was developed as a state-of-the-art center for learning, meeting and collaboration for use by CUMC students and faculty, as well as the local community, and visiting dignitaries and members of the wider academic community. Due to the small building footprint, the design resulted in several double-height spaces connected by an interior stair to encourage vertical flow within the building. Several spaces, including lounge type areas for places of learning, socializing and collaboration, combined with the large volume of spaces created conflicting acoustics making acoustic finishes paramount. Additional design elements included the auditorium where the walls are comprised entirely of glass, one exterior facade wall and one wall separating the auditorium from a public circulation and gathering space. Other key program elements include technologically advanced and intensive audiovisual medical simulation rooms that require special acoustic consideration for student simulation to be recorded and played back for evaluation.

PRINCE TON UNIVERSIT Y 2 0 WA S H I N G T O N R O A D KPMB ARCHITECTS
Cerami’s acoustical and audiovisual teams worked with KPMB Architects on the 20 Washington Road renovation project which repurposed the former Frick Chemistry Laboratory and bring together academic and administrative areas that are now dispersed across the University campus. The 200,000 square feet of space was divided into two complementary areas, one a home to economics and one to international initiatives. The structure’s interior were renovated extensively, while the historic character of the exterior of the building and primary interior spaces, such as the entry and the second-floor library, were be preserved. The building features new classrooms, offices and meeting spaces, and two communal atria. The atrium on the south side of the building enclosed the existing stone facade courtyard and connect to Scudder Plaza and the other social science buildings in the neighborhood - Robertson, Corwin, Wallace, Fisher and Bendheim halls.

UNIVERSIT Y OF MIAMI S TUDENT HOUSING VILL AGE ARQUITECTONICA
Cerami is providing acoustical, audiovisual, IT, and security consulting services on Phase I of the new student housing expansion at the University of Miami. Integrated within the 600,000 sf site are academic and student services, flexible event and recreational spaces, and locations for retail operations. The primary goal of this project was connection: between the school of architecture and the dormitories, between the new student housing center and a pool, between a place to learn and a place to live.

SUNY ALBANY SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
PERKINS + WILL
This new building serves as the hub of learning and innovation in commercialization and entrepreneurship for the School’s expanding programs. The project goals included two important client mandates: to design learning spaces that enable active learning and student engagement. The design for the building included a two story concourse starting at the lower level entry off main UAlbany circulation tunnel. This atrium space was designed to allow copious amounts of natural light to the lower level, which provided multiple lecture halls off the lounge and circulation corridor. Other key program elements included technologically advanced classrooms and meeting spaces, breakout rooms for team projects, expanded space for career services, student reception areas, collaborative research centers, graduate assistant work space, and a cafÊ with an outdoor garden.

Cerami was chosen to provide acoustics, audiovisual, IT and security consulting services for renovation of instructional laboratory and research facilities at the School of Dental Medicine (SDM) and in the Medical Science Building (MSB). Ten eight-chair dental surgery suites, seven treatment rooms, clean and dirty dispensaries, labs with dental casework, and two x-ray rooms comprise the technical program for this 30,000 SF renovation and fit-out. The project also includes private and open offices, conference rooms, a reception area, and a lobby/waiting area. The control of noise and vibration is a significant acoustical challenge for complex laboratory environments. To ensure excellent acoustical performance throughout the facility, Cerami's acoustical team established acoustical design criteria for all occupied spaces. We also set up guidelines for partition types, interior finishes, floor slabs and vibration isolation of all MEP equipment. Audiovisual design include cost effective technology for enhancing presentations, collaborations, and instructions in the laboratories and conference rooms.
