SHANE MURIATA THE only day from last week I want to forget is Thursday the 4th of April, because that was the real April Fools joke to end all jokes when the Broncos got smashed by the inform and defending Premiers, the Roosters of Bondi. So bad was the game, I stopped watching it after half time and switched it over to the AFL, which probably was good idea because Brisbane played even worse in the second half. The coach and the players who came off the SCG last week should have a long, hard look at themselves, because that garbage they dished up was unacceptable. Anyway, enough about that, it seems it was a weekend of upsets all-round. There was the comp when Souths lost their first game, Cows fell again and the Warriors got back into the winner’s circle. Corey Norman once again reminded Kevin Walters that he’s available for the maroons if needed, after kicking another golden point field goal to get the Dragons home again in a nail biter. The only team still to win anything is the useless Old Coast Titans, who look more flat than a week-old coke bottle sitting in my fridge. The one game in the NRL I can’t wait for is the
Cows and the Storms in Townsville this Friday night, which should be a cracker. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say Cows by 12. On a rainy and dismal Saturday afternoon at the Den of the Tully Showground, our Tigers came away with a few mixed results. First off the shelf was the new, yet talented women’s Rugby League side, who scraped by a couple of tries against a good Suburbs side. Captain and newly appointed President of the Showgrounds, Rebecca Davis was in everything. Setting up tries and over all, leadership was the order of the day, as she kept her cool and guided the ladies home in a classic. Niece and Olympic sprinter Samantha Davies and Brooke Tongy proved a handful for the Pyramid team, showing both mum Beany and Dor Dor how it’s done. Not to be outdone, new NFL recruit Hanna Gumbleton and Teegan Muriata made sure everyone went home remembering the women’s game, while future NRL player Eileen Jack helped the team over the line. The best feel good story about this team was seeing inspirational mum Mahala Peach in the famous
black n gold. I must admit, I had a little tear when I saw her run out, cause this women has been through so much. After battling a crippling sickness that sees many ordinary people quit after treatment, this champion refused to lie down and let anything beat her. Easily the most emotional comeback in recent memory. After welcoming his new baby into the world (Katrina did most of the work) Reserve Grade coach Steven Barrett was all smiles when his boys walked off the showground with two competition points with a 2-0 start to the season. All the players were rapt with the effort they gave, especially captain Louis Carlaw, who couldn’t hide the grin after the game: “Good game, ay,” was the only thing I could hear him say. Big Dan was again a handful, with young gun Tyriq Dickman all class out the back. His style of play reminds me another great Dickman fullback in Leighton, who was a standout junior in his time. Not accustomed to letting another family getting all the raps, Jeremy ‘Goldfish ’Dickman proved a hit in his comeback game. I have no dra-
Aden Bennett scoring a try for Tully Tigers reserve grade. mas in saying Jeremy is a future A Grade captain in waiting, such is my belief in him. Time will tell if we get to see his true potential. Big congrats to Katrina and Steven on their new bub, which will get spoilt by Grandma and Grandad for sure. After the thriller in Manilla (Babinda), the return bout in Rumble in the Jungle that is Tully, proved to be another game that just got away from our A grade side, when Kangaroos held on to go home 1814 winners. It was another case of whatifs, with the game proving as elusive as my idea of being skinny this coming winter. Head Coach Tongy could only

manage a few words at full time, but he remained upbeat: “It’s not the end of the world. It’s just back to the drawing board to fix a few more things. Obviously we wanna win, but in saying that, we will be better prepared for the next clash,” which is against yearly title favourites the fish eaters of the north, Cairns Brothers. Our main strike man Darryl Grant just did not see enough of the ball, and that was disappointing. When he finally got his hands on it, the Tigers were threatening on every play. Hopefully our side is back to their damaging best next week. Our champion Tully Tigers Women Team.

ANOTHER wet and windy weekend resulted with all but the very dedicated staying home doing house hold chores and maintaining their fishing gear. The amount of fresh in the coastal creeks made fishing the estuaries almost impossible with exception of some nice flathead caught around the drop offs. There has been some barra caught mainly around the mouth of drains and snags in close proximity of the mouth on the run in tide. There has also been some nice Barra, Blue Salmon and Trevally caught by anglers fishing the various headlands on the cassowary coast. As normal in these conditions anglers fishing the Hinchinbrook channel have had a lot more opportunities. It is always possible to find a sheltered area with reasonable water quality, normally around the heart of the
channel. Although numbers were still down there was some very good Barra and Jacks caught around the gutters and snags mostly on soft plastic prawn imitations such as the Zerek prawn. Bait fisherman have mainly been focusing on Grunter, fishing around the mouth of the creeks and channel drop offs along the more sheltered flats in the Hinchinbrook channel. The Fishers creek area and the small boat passage have also been producing reasonable fishing. We are now in the better months for mud crabs, with some good bucks being caught mainly along the Hinchinbrook flats. The coastal creeks such as the Hull and Murray have also been producing good crabs but quality of crabbing can easily be affected by heavy rain. There has also been some good prawns along with the odd Barra, Grunter and Salmon caught along the Cardwell foreshore. Unfortunately the weather is not looking good to travel offshore this weekend with

strong winds forecast for both Saturday and Sunday. At this stage the forecasters are not expecting heavy rain, so with some luck the creeks will get a chance to drop to normal and we can enjoy some good estuary fishing. I find the estuary fishing improves through April and May so hopefully we will see some great action on Barra, Jacks, salmon and Grunter over the next month. We should also see the whiting start to come into the estuaries over the next few weeks. This weekend the early morning run out tide will suite chasing Barra and Jacks in the estuaries. Another option would be to fish the first few hours of the run in. The water quality should be better, giving you a better chance of getting on to some good Mangrove Jacks. Those keen on chasing Grunter should try the first few hours of the early morning run tide out or on either side of the late afternoon high tide. Don`t forget the crab pots. A win for Tully Netball teams TULLY Netball Association travelled to Smithfield Saturday March 16 to compete in the Marlin Coast Netball pre-season competition in both the Premier League 14-17yrs and Junior league 11-13yrs competition. They came away victorious in both divisions. “This is a great result to Tully Netball in the development of our juniors and the way that they play the game of Netball,” said Jonette Wright President
of Tully Netball Association. “The way the girls have improved their individual games through competition and training has resulted in the success that we saw on Saturday.” Ashlee Watson lead from the front playing the centre position and directing play as Tully saw victory against the Port Douglas Dolphins. Seasoned campaigners Melody Smith, Michaela Adams and Teghan Gee showed maturity
as they defended and attacked, both being Tully’s strength in the Premier League match. In her first game as a Tully Representative Stevie Blennerhassett played like she was always going to be part of the Tully team. Sasha-May Flegler was outstanding in both matches showing her great natural ability to give “all that you’ve got, all of the time.” Younger players Zoe Waters, Maddie Fielder and Li-
vinia Braur finished a morning of softball finals and fronted up to represent Tully in Netball. All girls played extremely well for the commencement of the 2019 season. Georgia Adams, Eliza Smith and Stella Berge allowed the Tully team to display convincing netball skills during both games. Jonette also added: “We are in very exciting times for Netball in Tully; the installation of lights on the two outdoor
courts at Tully High will allow us to be playing in one location each Monday night for our fixtures.” The 2019 competition has an under 12 Division, Division 3 for high school students and adults and of course the Divisions 1 & 2 which are all played on a Monday afternoon and evenings. Anyone wishing to join one of the teams are welcome to play.

AROUND THE SCHOOLS Woomera Bests Cooby at St Clare’s Primary School Tully Cross Country SEAN DENT ON Friday April 5, St. Clare’s Primary School hosted a cross country track meet between their school and the school from X. There were races for boys and girls aged 6-12. In all, 150 children participated and it attracted a crowd of between 150-200 parents and siblings who cheered on the runners who slogged through the mud in varying weather conditions. At times the sun shone, other times it poured and there were periods where 12yr Boys 1st Luke 2nd Dean 3rd Jarrod

it poured despite the sunshine- but nothing dampened the spirits of the junior athletes, the family supporters or the teachers there to cheer on their students. One particular moment epitomised the event when PE Teacher, Cherie Jenkins announced, “And here comes Chelsea down the straight … with only one shoe!” Chelsea’s other shoe was in her hand, but she kept running all the way to the finish line where Jenkins shook her hand and congratulated her for her effort, as she did with every 8yr Boys 1st David 2nd Ben 3rd Declan
runner as they completed the course. For the younger runners, older students from the school ran in front, presumably so they wouldn’t get lost and to give them a rabbit to chase. One thing was clear: everyone enjoyed themselves. You couldn’t find a happier bunch of kids, but then again, what kid doesn’t enjoy time in the mud? Below is a list of winners in each age category, but cliché or not, everyone won that day.
