Top Fly Fisherman Visits Tully to Give Tips THIS past Saturday morning, Tackle World Tully hosted a lures workshop with Jackson Lures’ pro angler and International Product Manager, Brett “Bretto” Wilson at the Tully Hotel. It was his first such presentation to a Cassowary Coast audience and a crowd of roughly 70 people lined Butler Street just before 9am in anticipation of the event. Minutes later, they filed into The Shed room of the hotel to learn about old and new lures available from Jackson Lures, a Japanese company that has specialized in fishing equipment since 1980. On the face of it, it looked like a pure marketing event, but upon a deeper examination, Wilson leaned upon his decades of experience as a top fly fisherman to teach the crowd, which consisted of men, women and children keen to get up close to the expert fisherman. Wilson went into a lot of detail about how each lure worked, how to apply some of his favourite techniques and what kind of fish they were likely to catch. It was his first such seminar in Tully but he plans to do more in the future. Wilson started up by showing a movie that was totally in Japanese, although it did have English subtitles that you could read if you got a seat near the front of the presentation. It seemed like a dubious choice to open with: the movie consisted of two Japanese workers explaining their daily jobs. The gentleman’s job was to get the colours right in order to attract the fish. The lady’s job was to assemble the lures. This part of the presentation demonstrated the attention to detail they both gave to their daily tasks and the pride they took in their work. “I hope the lures I make catch lots of fish,” she said.
As the short movie ended, the method in Wilson’s madness emerged. “As you can see, every lure is handmade and takes a lot of time,” he said. He then proceeded to show various lures both on the big screen and in his hand, explaining the technology behind each lure and how it will move unpredictably in the water, zigging and zagging for instance, allowing it to trick fish into believing it is a live sea creature. He also explained how some of the lures were designed to be cast pretty far in the air and how they were manufactured to be aerodynamic so that they flew straight and far. “They will land in the ideal position facing forward before descending beneath the surface,” said Wilson. In Japan they have specially designed fishing lakes stocked with a plentiful supply, but you catch bigger fish the further away you cast. After discussing each lure, he then offered the chance for the local residents to ask questions and he seemed very knowledgeable. His presentation clearly inspired people because a few minutes later, many of them crossed the road to visit Tackle World Tully to inspect the lures up close. At the end of his presentation, Wilson pulled raffle tickets from a jar and gave out prizes to his fans in the crowd. He said that Australia is the number two customer in the world for Jackson Lures, second only to France, and that Tackle World Tully is the number two store in Australia out of about 50 stores. Tackle World Tully’s big Easter sale will continue until May 6 according to Derek Maynard, Manager of the local store.

A couple of short breaks in the weather last week allowed boats to travel out to the islands. The large schools of bait which are often around this time of year were present but unfortunately they were down deep. There was some pelagic action, mostly some very good quality Bluefin Tuna. If we can get a few dry days the water quality will improve and we will see the Queenfish, Trevally and Grey Mackerel move in and start harassing these bait schools. This is also when we start seeing a few Spanish Mackerel showing up. The estuary fishing has also been tough due to dirty water and the colder water conditions, a result of all the fresh water. It is still possible to do reasonably well, you just have to look for cleaner, warmer water. I have also found that water temperatures are higher by as much as 1 or 2 degrees in the afternoon and this can make a huge difference. Last Sunday we found the fishing tough in the morning but eventually caught a dozen small Barra as the water conditions improved during the afternoon incoming
Silkwood Bowls Club Last Wednesday the Social games on April 10 saw Anna Della Bella and Karin Rastoll defeat Carol Lowe and Lee Mayell 22/13. Scrounger was played between Tony Haydock, Delmo Tarditi and Wayne Mayell Tony was first over the line with 103 points followed by Delmo 76 and Wayne 62. Sunday April 14 of Club Champion Ship Round 2 Men Singles continued Delmo Tarditi and Dan Dunne faced a very competitive and challenging game to reach the first 25 points and after 32 ends the decision went to Delmo 25, Dan20 The Sunday social saw Anna Della Bella and Chris Lower defeat Brian Brooks and Karin Rastoll 24/22 As usual Friday Night Barefoot Bowls was enormous fun so come along and try our bowls game. Bowls are provided and all are welcome. We start with a BBQ at 6pm followed by a game of bowls and ending with a cuppa and something yummie! FREE BOWLS COACHING. tide. Those that are prepared to put in an effort and shift their crab pots around have been rewarded with some great mud crabs over the past week. The coastal creeks such as the Hull, Murray and Dallachy are all crabbing well, you just have to put in the effort and find them. The Hinchinbrook area has been crabbing well and is well worth the effort with some really big bucks being caught. I have not heard much in the way of Grunter caught over the weekend, however this weekend the tides are really good for Grunter, especially that early morning run in tide. The Barra fishing up in the brackish and freshwater reaches of the Tully and Murray rivers has been fantastic with good numbers of mostly-smaller fish being caught. Local identity Freddy Senko lost an absolute horse of a Barra while live baiting last week, which just shows that these big girls will travel right up into the freshwater when conditions are right. There has also been some reasonable Sooty Grunter and Jungle Perch caught by fishing the smaller creeks and drains. Check the water in these small creeks is clear first- some big crocs are now getting into some areas that you would have considered safe in the past. In my
opinion we definitely need to consider harvesting the eggs, these smaller crocs are forced to travel into these areas by the larger males. Unfortunately they eventually will get bigger and will become a threat. The weather forecast for this weekend is for winds in the 10 to 20 knots range. There could possibly be a small window to get out to the islands on Saturday morning, but unfortunately at this stage fishing on Sunday will be confined to the creeks. This is not all bad news however as the tides are ideal to fish for Grunter up on the Hinchinbrook flats. The larger run in the tide will make fishing for Barra and Jacks in the creeks difficult, you will either have to fish the higher tidal extremities of the coastal creeks or fish the slack water on either side of the afternoon low tide. Another alternative is to travel down to Hinchinbrook and fish the mouth of the drains around the sheltered waters of the heart of the channel. Unfortunately access to Port Hinchinbrook or Fishers creek will be impossible for a few hours around the bottom of the tide. Don`t forget the crab pots. Good Fishing Roly Newton Tackle World Tully

Our new shade cloths were installed over the seating and they look impressive thank you to all who helped.
Innisfail Men’s Bowls On Thursday we again had a good crowd of 31 bowlers on the green. After a tied score the trophy had to be decided on a count back with S. Pagano, M. Clifford, G. Steve winning the trophy. Saturday was another good day with nineteen on the green. Bragging rights went to G. Anderson, S. Dallapozza and R. Russell. Two games of “A” Singles were contested during the week. M. Bright defeated J. Walker. And D. Leech defeated G. Anderson. The following games have been called to be played April 21. “A” Singles: F. The B Grade singles also got under way in perfect weather conditions where despite a good fight by Dell Steve in the second half of the game, Ann Windsor went on to win the first round. In the social game, Eileen Hamann, Helen Paterson, Marcia Ryall and Ellie Petrie 28 were too strong in the final ends for Daphne Kirkman, Lyn Stevenson, Ann Rule and Joan Atkinson 11. It was great to have Marcia Ryall back on the green in such fine form after knee surgery which has kept her away for several months. AS if the week wasn’t already hard to get up for, a trip to Cairns on a Sunday proved a little too much for the Tully Tigers as both grades left Stan Williams Park empty handed against a steady Brothers outfit. Reserve Grade Coach Steven Barrett barely left the grounds with any hair on his head such was the controversy surrounding the reserve grade game, when the boys went down 2422 in a dour affair. If all reports are correct, then the players should hold their heads up after starting the game with only 12 players. The Tigers then hit the lead with only 10 minutes left, and this is where the real circus began. If you think me being stood up for a date with Jessica Mauboy was unfair, how stupid was it when legendary cane farmer big Wal got held up 3 times over the try line. I even remember a time when I played that Wal was held up over the try line, but the ref gave him a try based on his celebration. If you think that was ridiculous, well, just like the TV guy selling magic household appliances, there’s more. They had 9 regular players out, 5 more
tries disallowed by the same touch judge, cold water in the showers and Innisfail had no KFC on the ride home. Overall Steven was very proud of the effort and can take some confidence in the return bout when our boy face them again. A special mention to evergreen Mr Cricket Joshua Chadwick, who turned back the clock in a display that could only be described as close to JT. Cheers for helping us out, because I doubt that will be the last time. Three points went to bash Brother Shane Leahy who put in another terrific performance up front. If the planets were finally aligning to give the A grade boys a much-needed win after coming close in the last few weeks, the bloody sun and Jupiter forgot to show up as our boys were sent packing with a 40 point drubbing at the hands of the Brethren. What seemed like a good few weeks leading into this game, Brothers were prepared to show us why they are a finals team every year. After speaking with A Grade captain Fabian Tauli after the game, it was clear as day what we did wrong. “They were too strong in the middle, and our game plan of challenging them didn’t give us anything. Those injuries in the first half didn’t help, and not playing smart didn’t either.” As hurt as the legendary
front rower sounded, he still managed to sound upbeat about what lays ahead “We can still fix our season, cause it’s only the start. I thought Benny Campo and Aiden Bennett playing their first comp game were outstanding. Hopefully we can get everyone back on the same page.” The CDRL takes a break for Easter and Rep games, so hopefully we are ready to go when the competition gets back underway. Tully Tigers Womens team had a break on the weekend, with preparations already beginning for the next match against the Sharks on May 11 in Mossman. Captain Rebecca Davies still thinks we can be the team to beat if we stock our playing ranks. “Our next training will be on the 25th of April, 6-7pm, so if you are interested, come on down and sign on. We have got a good bunch of girls already that have seemed to gel easy. A few more won’t hurt.” So if you are interested, get on down to training. After weeks of rubbishing the Gold Coast Titans in the NRL, the Brar Boys little cousins the Surface Paradise Nippers were the only thing to celebrate anything Qld rugby league after they beat the in-form Penny Panthers. The Broncos were embarrassed by the Tigers and the Cows were literally robbed. The Storm has remained unbeatable, with
hooker Cameron Smith becoming the greatest point scorer in premiership history when his purple team overcame a desperate Cows side. South Sydney came back with a vengeance with Cody Walker crossing the stripes four times against the hapless Warriors. St George are starting to look like a threat to the comp, but my money is still on the Roosters to lift the trophy at the end. Big congrats to the great Greg Inglis for a magnificent career, which has surely made one Leearna Burke cry when he announced it on Monday. His contribution to the game is unmatched and will be missed by all those who enjoyed watching him. When he first came onto the scene in 2005, he was nothing short of a broomstick, but could move like Harry Potter sitting on it. He was the last survivor of the 06 origin series when Qld started on that golden run of 8 series win. He scored more tries than any other play-
ers in origin history, but more to the point, he represented what big games are all about. He could be in average form playing club games, but as soon as origin season rolled around, there was rarely any other player who came close to him when it came time to smash the Blues. He made a positive influence on the All Stars concept, which filtered down to any young player aspiring to make something of themselves whether in footy or life. He took home the Clive Churchill medal for best on ground in a grand final while playing 5/8, terrorised NSW from fullback and centre and won premierships for both Melbourne and the Bunnies. When it’s all said and done, I am quite sure that the name GI will get a mention when it comes to picking the next Immortals along with Smith, Slater, Cronk, Locky and JT. Thanks for the memories GI.

Golf This Week Tropical Coast Vets Golf results A small field of Tropical Coast Veteran golfers braved the wet conditions last Tuesday April 9 at El Arish. A single stableford event was played on a heavy course with immaculate greens. The ladies winner with 38 points was Kass Marshall followed by Julie Reed and Caryl Lovell. The men’s event was won by Steve Wells followed by Eric Zamora, Ewan Lovell and Bert Pajonk. The pin shots were awarded to Kass Marshall, Deb Giles, Ewan Lovell and Bob Williams. El Arish Golf We got in another full week of comps uninterrupted by the weather, starting with last TUESDAY’s Stableford. The winner was Fran Lomas on 35 with runner-up Arthur Hamilton on 31. SPORT Atherton Roosters defeat Innisfail retaining John Cole Toyota Mayor’s Challenge Trophy MARIA GIRGENTI ATHERTON Roosters A grade side had a dominant 26 - 12 win over Innisfail Leprechauns at Callendar Park on Saturday in wet and slippery conditions to retain the John Cole Toyota Mayor’s Challenge Trophy. Prior to kick-off, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of former Tully player Okesene Sala, father of Alex Sala and Kangaroos stalwart Tom Tassell. The annual friendly competition is held in good spirit and after the match Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor John Kremastos presented the trophy to Tablelands Regional Councillor Dave Bilney on behalf of Mayor Joe Paronella which was then presented to Roosters captain Jermaine Pedro and the winning Roosters team. Innisfail started the night with an early 6-0 lead before the Roosters hit back with two tries to lead 10-6 at the break. Two tries by Atherton in the second half pushed their lead out to 20 - 10 and although Inn-
isfail struck back with a try in the final minutes of the game it was all too late. Try scorers for Innisfail were Fred Koraba and Lata Fakalelu with Aaron Jolley slotting two conversions and George Toby was named Player of the Match. Mai Mani scored a double for Atherton while captain Jermaine Pedro, Blake Taylor and Ned Blackman also chipped in with one try apiece and Ty Grogan successfully booted three out of five conversions. Innisfail coach Leon Hallie said Atherton were just too good in the wet conditions as they had better ball control and showed more desperation in defence. “Losing Robbie Haren early in the game didn’t help, so the break will be good for our recovery as we’ve had our fair share of injuries.” “I know it’s only early in the season, however some weaknesses from last year were exploited again this weekend so we’ll be working hard over the next few weeks to be better against a good Kangaroos side,” said Hallie.
Despite a late comeback surge in the second half, Innisfail were unlucky to go down to Atherton by 26 - 28 in a thrilling Reserve grade clash. A double was scored by Jayden Rudken while the Player of the Match was Roy Mooka. After leading by 20 - 12 at half time, Innisfail Leps Under 18’s side went on with the job and defeated Atherton by 36 - 22. The game was called off with just minutes left on the clock after a serious injury to an Atherton Roosters player which saw him transported from the field by ambulance. Innisfail’s second-rower Anthony Lowden-Kearing was named Player of the Match. In their third game of the season, Innisfail women’s touch footy team continued their unbeaten run with a 1 - 0 victory over Atherton with Rylee Wallace the only try scorer in the first half. Boogan Stars Junior Football Club Sign On Day MARIA GIRGENTI A NUMBER of new and familiar faces attended the Boogan Stars Junior Football Club Come and Try Day held recently at Castor Park, Mourilyan which generated a great response with players in all age groups signing up for this season. Under 11s coach Brendan King said the club’s future was looking bright with healthy numbers signing on, especially in the Little Stars age group which is important for grassroots of the game. “It’s great to see children getting out, being active, learning the skills of the game and how to be part of a team.” Youngsters had the opportunity to meet the coaches and take part in mini games and friendly kick followed by a cold drinks and snacks for sale. The Boogan Little Stars is for boys and girls aged 3 - 5 years while boys and girls from Under 6 to Under 12 years make up the Juniors. The club is calling for expressions of interest for a 13/14s mixed social competition to be held in Silkwood or players in this age group have the option of playing for Innisfail United Football Club in the FNQ Football competition. Katter and Knuth take the reins on supporting small business in Kennedy KAP Leader and Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter and KAP Member for Hill Shane Knuth are spurring on small business in their electorate, recently on show at a Tully horse riding facility. Visiting Reinsdown Horse Riding in Tully, run by Sam and Amy Strutt, Mr Katter and Mr Knuth saw first-hand the value of a small local business which capitalised on its surrounds to offer customers a memorable experience and attract a range of visitors and tourists. Mr Katter said the facility, which hosted personalised tours of a working cattle and horse property and catered for all riders from beginner to advanced, harnessed the beauty of the bush and rainforest. “Congratulations to Amy and Sam at Reinsdown Horse Riding; nowhere else can you ride in the jungle with the cassowaries and on the beach,” he said. The small business added significant value to the region and its capacity to attract more locals as well as visitors from Australia and overseas. “What these two great people have delivered is unique and a huge drawcard to the Paradise Coast, which is fast becoming a major tourism centre,” Mr Katter said. As small business owners, the Strutts said support from locals, tourists and governments was important to stay viable. “The more support we get from everyone is fantastic,” Ms Strutt said. With Tully’s short tourist season, Ms Strutt said she encourages visiting friends, family and clients to shop locally and support local tourism operators rather than travel to Cairns.
