April, May and June. I just shake my head at the thought that large parts of Australia are in drought and would give anything for rain. There were some opportunities to fish the inshore headlands with the seas dropping off on Monday afternoon. According

Those fishing the sheltered waters of the Hinchinbrook Channel also reported catching good numbers of Fingermark and some lovely Grunter. Surprisingly, there have been reasonable numbers of Trevally and small Queen fish feeding on the bait that

was calm, and the rain was minimal for the few hours that we fished. However, we did leave early as we could see the weather starting to deteriorate. We targeted Mangrove Jacks and had to continually keep moving to avoid the huge numbers of small Barra boiling at our lures.

rain is forecast for this weekend. The forecast at this early stage of the week is for 15 to 20 knots with some lighter winds inshore. However, the forecast is for heaps more rain which means the Barra enthusiasts will need some good wet weather gear. Definitely the best

down the barbs, this will help when releasing. Be as quick as possible when taking a photo and if the fish needs to be laid down on the floor put it on a wet towel so as not to damage its protective slime. The Hinchinbrook area will also be a very popular location to chase Barra

Local fighters ready to rumble

FIGHTERS FROM Fusion Fight and Fitness Innisfail have been putting in the hard yards at training for upcoming Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu fights with Taylah Barns to enter the ring for her debut fight this Saturday. Barns will go up against Cairns opponent and debutante Rion Boney from Intense Muay Thai Cairns in the 52kg division on February 2 at Cairns Colonial Club as part of the Explosive Fight Promotions Path to Elite event. The fight will be held over three two-minute rounds with modified Muay Thai rules. A working mother of two, Barns has been training in Muay Thai for a year, having previously done boxing at Innisfail PCYC for two years and always wanted to fight but could never find an opponent in her weight division. Barns has ramped up her training sessions to twice daily with Muay Thai coach Clayton Cook to work on her technique, general fitness and power

so she can cut weight. Barns has ramped up her training sessions to twice daily with Muay Thai coach Clayton Cook where she has been working on her technique, general fitness and power so she can cut weight and said she is really excited about her first fight as it will be a great experience. Jack Mills will also fight in the same event as Barns in 45kg division against Tate Peever from Fight Firm in Townsville. On February 12, Kyle and Brodie Mayocchi will travel overseas to represent Australia in Season 6 of Copio Podio in Rio, Brazil, and are the first two Australians out of the five chosen – with one each from Spain, Russia and Brazil – to be invited to compete in the largest Jiu-Jitsu tournament on February 17. In the under 67kg division group 12 Brazilian fighters have already fought and the winner will face Kyle in a super fight. Brodie’s Under 54kg division will see 16 fighters from 13 other countries compete in four groups of four who will fight against each other

with the top two out of each group progressing to the quarter finals. A loss in the quarter finals sees them out with the winner to move into the semi-finals and the semi-finals winner into the finals. The brothers have recently returned from intensive two weeks training at Peter de Been Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Victoria and since arriving home have been doing three classes daily and daily training sessions with a light work out on Sundays. Both boys have also greatly benefitted from Nicholas Aguir, a black belt from Argentina, who has been training at the gym for the past few months as it has lifted them to another level and made a significant difference to their fight readiness. They also recently attended a seminar in Cairns with Craig Jones, a IBJJF world No-Gi champion from Melbourne where they worked on their drilling and rolling and fixed the final details of their techniques and strategies before their trip to Brazil.
