End of an Era

Greg Shannon A few weeks ago I attended the latest QRL history committee meeting in Brisbane, which proved to be a significant event as it was the last one to be chaired by one of the great stalwarts of Queensland Rugby League - Kevin Brasch. Anyone who has followed the game for a long time will know who Kevin is, but for those who don’t, he was a former halfback from the 1960s who went on to become one of the codes great administrators, managing the Queensland State of Origin side and Australian sides in the 1980s and was a member, and at one stage chairman, of the Australian Rugby League. Back in 2008 Kev took on the role of establishing and running the QRL histo-

Then & Now ry committee. Your truly was fortunate enough to be part of this committee, and Kev became a great mentor. The many stories he can recall from his 75 years playing, coaching and administering rugby league would fill a book! In his youth, Kev played rugby league before turning briefly to Rugby Union in his teens, making the Queensland rugby union side as a halfback in the late 1950s. Qualifying as a teacher, he moved to the UK and played rugby league for Huddersfield before coming home to play in Brisbane with Valleys club in the old Brisbane Rugby League competition. In those days, rugby league was played under the unlimited tackle rule. Any side who had the ball could keep it all game if

they didn’t knock on or lose a scrum. So the halfback’s role and teamwork with his forwards was vital in trying to win possession through scrums. Kev recalls one day playing for valleys against the old Brisbane Brothers club who had a new front rower from the bush. A few years later after transferring to Mount Isa Kev made the North Queensland (NQ) side to play France. Joining the NQ squad in Townsville, one of the first new NQ teammates he met was that same big front rower who had played for Brisbane Brothers – Tully’s own Danny Clifford. Kev turned to coaching and club administration with the Brisbane Norths club in the 1970’s after returning from Mount Isa. One of the many Brisbane Norths juniors from that time when Kev was the clubs President is MSF’s Mick Ward. When the first origin series was played in 1982 Kev was appointed co-manager of the Queensland side and he also co- managed Queensland sides to England and PNG in 1983. He remained Queensland manager until 1988 and also co-managed Australian sides up until 1991. Now his 80s Kev has finally called full time on his involvement in the game, but it is worth noting just how people like him have helped build the game. They played and coached and administered the game in an era when everyone held down full time jobs and they did it mainly because they simply loved the game.

ANOTHER wet and windy weekend kept all but the very keen at home sharpening hooks. The Hinchinbrook region was very busy with the annual catch and release tournament which is based out of Lucinda and run by the Ingham Rod and Reel Club. The fishing was tough, a result of the wet and windy conditions, however there were still several Barra caught in the 80cm and 90cm length mark and some very good Mangrove Jacks and heaps of smaller rat Barra. The beauty of fishing in the Hinchinbrook channel is the variety of different species available and this was shown with flathead, Queen fish, Trevally, Fingermark and Grunter also being released. The estuary fishing in the coastal creeks has been a little tough but not impossible due to the influx of fresh water, and the very large tides over the past week resulting in very dirty water. Cleaner water can normally be found during the first half of the incoming tide, and so I always try to be actively fishing through this period. Reasonable numbers of both Jacks and Barra were caught during this period over the weekend. The other bonus has been the mud crabs with May and early June being one of the best times of the year to target these fantastic eating crustaceans.

The fresh water fishing is still holding up with plenty of Sooty Grunter and the occasional Jungle Perch and Barra being caught. At the time of writing this column (which is very early in the week) the weather sites are predicting the winds to drop off a little this weekend with Sunday predictions at this stage being 10 to 15 knots. This may allow boats to travel and fish the close-in reefs and islands. At this time of year, we start to see both school and Spanish Mackeral start to turn up. The schoolies in particular can be targeted close inshore with some early fish normally caught just wide of the mouth of the Hull river and between Dunk island and Mission Beach. We should also see schools of Queen fish turning up around spots such as Forty Foot and Olive rock. The smaller boats should try fishing the estuaries; already the whiting and Bream are entering the rivers with some good catches reported from the mouth of the Murray and Meunga creeks. The neap tides which lead up to this weekend should allow the water clarity to improve. On Sunday the tides start to build again giving us some ideal tides to fish for Barra and Jacks in the rivers. Try either side of the mid-morning low tide. If you are keen on fishing for Grunter around the edges of the sand bars, try fishing the early morning run-out tide either in the coastal creeks or in the Hinchinbrook region. Those keen on fishing the deep holes in the Hinchinbrook channel for Fingermark, Grunter or Jew, would be fairly happy with the small run in the evening tide. Tigers News with Shane Muriata AS the Rafting World Championship was finishing up, our Tully Tigers were ready for the game of their lives when we faced the ever great empire that is the Innisfail Leprechauns. The women’s game that started the day was always going to be special and close, and they didn’t disappoint. Coach Rebecca Davis was happy and thankful so many girls turned out for the Tigers. Brenda Morice was outstanding in her comeback match and it was great to see one of Tullys most talented players in Eileen Jack and Layne Bennett getting amongst the MVP standings. Quick reminder to all of the women players that the next game is against the Mareeba Gladiators here at home on June 1. Reserve Grade coach Steven Barrett didn’t hold anything back when reassessing his game on the weekend: “Many were half asleep. Our discipline was the worst I’ve coached, so we have a lot to work

on.” On a day when nothing seem to go right, he found a shining light :“Jonty Ivey made the day bearable. I couldn’t go past him as our man of the match. Gerald Sore and Appoinia Savage were outstanding, so it wasn’t all bad news.” As if the entrée wasn’t enough for the main game, then our A grade Tigers were up for the challenge when they came away with a 16-all draw against arch-rival Leps. It has been a trying week for head coach Tongy, but the crack in his emotional voice at fulltime was one of pride. “What about that effort. They couldn’t break us with seven sets in a row on our line. We reminded ourselves the importance of the jersey, and that showed today.” Massive love to Steven Morice for making his first A-grade appearance in 18 years. Well, what a weekend of NRL action it was, with all the top teams getting the job in the respective games. The defending premiers the Sydney Roosters came to Suncorp Stadium on an 8 game winning streak, but that was stopped in its tracks when the Broncos ran over them in a semi-final type game. Milford was again at his best while the forwards of Haas and Co proved too strong for the

Chooks. The Melbourne Storm machine kept on rolling near the upper ranking when they got home in a tight one against the West Tigers, while the Bunnies toppled the green machine of Canberra to remain of top of the NRL ladder. Gold Coast continue to disappoint, while the Parramatta Eels looked clueless against the even more clueless Cows. One thing I will say is the Blues will look pretty stupid if they pick the Panthers halves Cleary and Maloney. Cody Walker and Reynolds should be there, whereas our Qld boys are still looking for a captain. Everyone else is doing it, so here’s my Qld captain. Matt Gillett, there I said it. Well, what a Rafting Championship our town put on. By all reports, every athlete enjoyed their time. To all the volunteers, businesses and general public, well done and thank you for making it a memorable week of excitement. I am pretty sure many of the athletes have already indicated they will be back. Great work Tully, and the surrounding areas. Great work people, your worth is far greater than any gold.

Bowls This Week Tully Bowls News RAIN < RAIN> and more RAIN has interfered with our intended games of bowls, but our men did manage to play Pennants at Tully against Innisfail in division three, where Tully won. Sunday two teams travelled to Silkwood to play Innisfail in the mixed pennants. Unfortunately, Tully lost. The teams were John Taylor, Ian Revie, Val Bradley & Molly Dunn. The second team consisted of John Brown, Ray Downing, Judy Hood & Robyn Brunello. The Friday night barefoot bowls & roast dinners are discontinued until further notice. Reminder to contact Ray Wicks on 0447 839 229 re introduction to bowls. This is held at 9:00am Saturday mornings. Hopefully, this coming week the weather will be kinder, so we can all see you on the green!!

Innisfail Men’s Bowls The Ladies were able to smile this week as they were able to play on Wednesday, whereas the Men’s game was washed out on Thursday. The Pennants on Saturday were disappointing as both Division Teams could not dredge up a win. The only ray of sunshine was that the Mixed Pennants team had a very good win on Sunday. The Saturday devotees enjoyed their social game on Saturday. There are no Men’s Pennant games this weekend, so we expect good numbers at the social games as it is obvious that we need the practise.

South Johnstone Bowls Saturday May 18, the Division 1 team travelled to Cairns to play Brothers Edmonton and West Cairns, with South Johnstone coming home with a win in both matches. Division 3 defeated Silkwood at home on Saturday, and the Mixed Pennants team travelled to Gordonvale on Sunday to play Yungaburra on a very heavy green. Emma Rowbotham’s final bowl ensured South Johnstone a win. Twilight bowls this Friday May 24. Night kicks off at 6:00pm with barbeque and bowls to start at 6:30pm. Mission Beach Cricket Club recently hosted the presentation evening for Junior Cricketers from Tully and Mission Beach MISSION Beach Cricket Club hosted the presentation evening for Junior Cricketers from Tully and Mission Beach recently. “The 2018/2019 cricket season for local juniors has been a most successful one,” President of Tully Cricket, Jake Robertson said. “The Under-12 competition between Mission Beach, Tully and two teams from Innisfail allowed for all juniors to really get a go of playing cricket. The format used was each player would bowl and bat for an equal number of balls depending on player numbers for the 20 overs. Most weeks players would face 20 balls or more and then bowl 20 balls or more. This has allowed for each player to learn more about the game of cricket.” Kobus van Vuuren the coach of the Mission Beach Under-12 was pleased with the players

that were selected in the CFN representative teams. Kobus made special mention of Chalize Liddel who represented the Northern Flames Under-13 girl’s team. The combined Under 15 Tully/ Mission Beach team coached by Denis Lindsay played in the Cricket Far North (CFN) competition on a home and away basis. Coach Lindsay was very proud of the players how they improved over the season. Dennis added, “Miller Oval – Tully was a wonderful Turf venue for the boys. The season was for many of the boys their first season playing on turf .“. The perpetual trophy for Mission Beach Cricket, the Frank Fillis Trophy went, to Christo Van Vuuren who played representative cricket in both club and school arenas.
