SATURDAY April 14 the residents of the Hinchinbrook Marina and members of the public attended a meeting to find out what is happening with the ownership of the Marina and work that needs to be done to restore infrastructure damaged in Cyclone Yasi. MORE than 300 people gathered at the Coral Sea Battle Memorial in Cardwell on Sunday, May 6, to pay their respects to the servicemen who fought in and lost their lives in the WWII Battle of the Coral Sea between 4 – 8 May 1942.
The entrance to the Park has a newly erected blue arch that bears the name ‘Coral Sea Battle Memorial Park.’ This arch was erected in the last few days before the ceremony with the help of community members and the local council.

Dametto from the Katter party came as the state representative, the Mayor of Cassowary Coast Council John Kremastos was present, and Cardwell’s councillor Glen Raleigh also attended. Progress on the marina site has stalled, and residents are awaiting a ruling from the Cairns magistrate because the case has been submitted to the Supreme Court. Without a ruling from the
court, many of the residents’ most pressing concerns, such as sewage disposal and road maintenance, cannot be resolved. Development legislation changed shortly after the original terms and conditions of the Hinchinbrook Marina agreement were written, and the marina land is now set to be listed under an updated version of a body corporate-style
agreement. Details in the agreement have created challenges for the residents of the marina, especially regarding where to pay rates and who is responsible for sewerage and roads. “THE NEW CASTAWAYS”
PROMISES NEW SEASON FOR CASSOWARY COAST
CASTAWAYS Resort in Mission Beach is demonstrating a strong commitment to the region in a proposed $70 million rebuild that will more than quadruple room capacity and generate hundreds of local jobs in construction and operations. “The New Castaways” will include a genuine regional conference facility, five pools (two existing and three additional), expanded multi-level dining and underground parking for 160 cars. The project will generate significant growth in the region, stimulating a prosperous and sustainable local and regional tourism industry. The resort has been operating for over 30 years, and the existing building has undergone many changes. Under the current owners, the resort was given a soft refurbishment in 2006, and in 2010 the Neville Smith Group spent $6M transforming the resort into an award winning beachfront resort. In 2015, the group purchased the adjacent property known as Mackays to bolster their room inventory. Despite the addition of Mackays to the Castaways overall inventory, the current resort is still struggling to cater to the growing demand in peak periods. In addition, ongoing maintenance costs are becoming prohibitively expensive. After months of analysis, the owners have determined a “knock-down and rebuild” provides the best long-term solution to the dedicated beachfront site. Resort owner James Neville-Smith said the project will provide Mission Beach and the Cassowary Coast region with the economic stimulus that the region has so long deserved. “Over the past 12 years we have steadfastly maintained our commitment to the Castaways business and the broader region. We have invested heavily in the existing asset, maintained a regional marketing presence far in excess of the scale of the business and maintained our long-held vision for the wider Mission Beach region. “This vision is based on an overarching desire to see a thriving tourism industry that ensures the character of continues page 3

THRASHING GOOD FOOTBALL SPORT
VISION JANNE RYTKONEN
IT’S a warm day for the Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) in Cairns on Friday, March 16. The baton exchange at the Flecker Botanic Gardens is scheduled for a very precise 12:39 pm, and onlookers start to arrive at the main entrance half an hour earlier, standing in small groups in patches of shade and facing east, watching for the relay convoy along Collins Avenue. There’s a stir and a cheer when the runners’ shuttle bus appears from around the corner. The bus stops and a lithe young woman alights, dressed in the sports uniform of the QBR and wearing the number 047. She flashes a dazzling smile and a wave at the people across the road before turning to a relay official for final instructions. Someone says, “That’s Miss World Australia,” and so it is: Madeline Cowe of Tully, running for Cairns in the QBR on Friday after a commercial photography shoot on Thursday at the Palm Cove Allamanda Resort and before flying back down to the ANZ Stadium in Sydney for an Ed Sheeran concert on Saturday. The last several years have been a whirlwind of beauty contests, modelling gigs, publicity engagements, turf club and charity ambassadorships, volunteer trips overseas, stints as a television presenter and actor, legal studies and intern-
ships, and travel in between. A regular travel destination for the Sydney-based model has been Tully and her home on the farm where she grew up. “It’s so easy to get caught up in a life style and values where you always look at people for what they do and what they have, rather than who they are,” Madeline says. “Coming back home to Tully and my family helps keep me grounded.” And grounded she is. Madeline works as a professional model, but she is nearing the end of a media studies course with the aim of becoming a TV presenter. On top of all that, she somehow finds time to continue her professional legal studies and is still on track to be admitted as a lawyer by the end 2018, after completing undergraduate legal studies at JCU with a Bachelor of Laws in 2016. Even more remarkably, in the midst of all the glitz and glamour and popularity, she has kept her original vision of helping disadvantaged and vulnerable members of society, whether in the developing world or at home in Australia. That vision strengthened during her internship in Women’s Legal Services as Madeline listened to preliminary interviews, reviewed cases, and attended court with victims of domestic violence. continues page 3

ABOUT US
Cassowary Coast Independent News (CCIN) is something of a rare beast: a 100% independent, 100% locally owned weekly newspaper. We have a strong focus on community news, because we have found that this is what the community is interested in. CCIN also publishes state, national, political and economic news, but we leave the bulk of that heavy lifting to the large national syndicates. We aim to be informative and balanced in our reporting and inclusive of all voices in our Cassowary Coast community. We see CCIN as a bridge for building strong relationships and an instrument for giving a voice to
SARI HYYTINEN LAST Tuesday, June 19, 32 local businesses and community organisations participated in the Read to Me Day in Tully organised by the Tully and District Chamber of Commerce. the people. We invest in the lives of our readers, contributors and advertisers by focussing mainly on positive achievements and local success stories, whether in sport, business, farming or family. We may be rare, but we are far from extinct. Our CCIN app is in the final beta-testing phase, and we are poised to launch as a fully-fledged digital platform very soon. Cyberspace is a global space, but CCIN will continue to bring news that matters to the people of the Cassowary Coast. We like to think that we publish news for the people, of the people, and by the people. And that is our charm point.

KEVIN “Mad Dog” Mudford is a one-ofa-kind character who is hard to ignore and impossible to forget as he carries his cross through the highways and by-ways of Australia and stops to chat with anyone who will listen. At first glance the giant religious symbol and Mudford’s tattooed head, face and arms might seem an incongruous combination, but as he tells his story, the connection becomes clear. Mudford has been there and done that when it came to tangling with the law in his native New Zealand. He was on a one-way, substance-fuelled and gang-laced road to destruction as he was shipped from prison to prison. He attributes his rescue to the person of Jesus Christ, whom he discovered in a church. Continues PG3

tired. Jim is known as “the Tree of Knowledge,” said Michael Verri, and Fab is known as “A true gentleman who gets on with the job,” said Tom Beaty, and they will be missed by their colleagues. Fab Mestroni completed 34 years of service at the Tully Sugar Mill. Fab was a loco

No single demographic takes the lion’s share of readership: our readers are farmers, teachers, tradespeople, retirees, business owners, backpackers, and most other groups you might care to name. On the ground, CCIN’s reach spans the entire Cassowary Coast, from Cardwell in the south to Innisfail in the north, to Woop Woop in the west, and we also sell in outlets in the Cairns region and the Tablelands. We’d like to sell in the east too, but there’s only pristine coral reefs out there.

Events are core business for our COMMUNITY NEWS, and we cover both the big and the small: anniversaries, concerts, festivals, markets, opening ceremonies, fund-raisers, special visits, milestones, meetings, speeches, sports days and much more. We feature individuals, businesses, societies, clubs, organisations and governments. Our writers are at the events each week having a hoot while providing local coverage. Discerning businesses, trades and services recognise that, despite digital disruption, the local rag is still a prime location for ADVERTISING to be seen by a high volume of local eyes. CCIN runs a comprehensive classifieds, trades and services section each week. Our advertorial packages offer excellent PR value for money and exposure for effort. And naturally, we offer Early General News (EGN) advertising all through the paper. Bring your own artwork, or let our highly experienced graphic designer bring your ideas and message to eye-catching life. We celebrate our local SPORTS heroes every week, whether they are Under 8s trying their hearts out, or A Grade women’s and men’s teams dishing out a drubbing (or copping one) to regional opponents in soccer, rugby league, netball, softball, outrigger paddling, tennis, judo, or mixed martial arts. The Cassowary Coast produces outstanding athletes in a range of sports. Many have won state and national awards and recognition, and several compete at an international level. Agriculture is the economic mainstay of the Cassowary Coast, and we dedicate part of our newspaper each week to bringing timely RURAL topics and news to our readers. Being a local paper, we have local sources in the sugar mills and industry bodies. We are privileged to have a number of regular and semi-regular COLUMN contributors. Our columnists are passionate and knowledgeable about fishing, gardening, rugby league (past and present), health issues and the sugar cane industry. And being local, their knowledge and expertise is relevant to local issues and conditions and adds value to our readers’ experience.
