HAVING an OCT in a full scope optometry practice is essential to providing quality eye health care. At a basic level it takes an ultrasound-like image of the back of the eye that helps detect all manner of eye disorders such as bleeding, retinal tears, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and much more. Innisfail Optical under Chris Payard bought the first OCT to the Cassowary Coast in 2011. We have built on that reputation and upgraded our OCT to the very latest and one of the most advanced models available. Our New OCT offers 3D scanning with a depth resolution of 0.005mm, it is extremely fast and overlays previous scans with the newest to analyse changes. It is far more adaptable than older models, allowing Lauren to change the scan parameters to really focus on the area of concern. An advanced OCT in the hands of an experienced operator is an invaluable tool in the monitoring of your eye
health. We feel that the implementation of an OCT in practice is as important as the piece of equipment itself. For this reason, in our practice only the Optometrist performs the scans with patients. This allows Lauren to target the areas of interest, do additional scans if problems are detected, and re-run the scan if necessary. On top of this, we do not have any form of performance targets with our advanced scanning: we only use it if it is of benefit to the patient. We routinely use our OCT for diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and for in-depth investigations for patients presenting with a sudden loss of vision, flashes and floaters or for post-surgical reviews. Having this equipment means we can accurately assess eye health issues and pass on detailed information to the eye surgeons in Cairns and Townsville if needed, ensuring you get timely care.
