Tully Flames hosted a junior soccer carnival
SARI HYYTINEN THE Tully Flames junior soccer club’s venue was very active last Sunday with junior soccer members of Jamie Gosling travelling to Tully from Cairns and members of junior soccer from Gareth Edds Elite Football League travelling to Tully from Townsville. The members of both sporting clubs meet half way in Tully for a carnival. A lot of work went into the day from members of the Tully Flames junior soccer club. “What an epic day! Thank you so much to all the wonderful people who helped out with cake/slice/biscuit making, shopping, prepping, ice gathering, serving, cleaning, cooking and everything in between!” said Lydia Valeriano the Tully Flames Junior Soccer club’s media and marketing representative, “…and for all the mowing that was done to prep the fields.” The event last Sunday was the first of seven, with the next one held on March 24.

IT has been a good run of weather that we have had over the previous week. This has allowed many boats to travel out to the main reefs. The fishing was generally good with reasonable numbers of Coral Trout and Red Throat Emperor being caught from along the reef drop offs and shallows. The Spear-fishermen also did well with good numbers of Coral Trout, Blue
Tuskers and Cray fish. There has also been a few Spanish Mackeral caught and speared. The deep-water shoals and wrecks fished extremely well with catches of good numbers of Large Mouth Nannygai being consistent. Closer in around the islands it has been all about Fingermark with some remarkable catches being reported. When bot-
tom fishing anglers usually need to be using live baits or freshly caught squid to get good catches of Fingermark. However, over the last week they must have been ravenous with good catches being had by anglers using frozen squid of an evening or at first light. Island trout and Grass Sweet lip have also been around in reasonable numbers with some
very large trout reported caught last week. Those anglers jigging around the islands and headlands have been hooking some nice Fingermark, Golden Trevally and Queen fish. Sharks have been a problem as well as hordes of juvenile Spanish Mackeral that have been snipping of the leaders. Hopefully these small Spaniards will be of a legal size by June and July. The big tides have played havoc with the anglers chasing Barra and Jacks i9n the tidal creeks. Although there have been some fish caught in the estuaries most of the fish caught have been up in
the upper tidal and fresh water reaches of the rivers. This has just been simply because the run in the tide has been causing lots of problems especially with water clarity. The local headlands, jetties and the Hinchinbrook flats have also been fishing well for Barra. My manager Derek had a blinder on jacks and Barra fishing missionary bay only to go back 2 days later to find the fishing difficult. This seems to be the pattern with water quality the most likely cause of the problems. The prawns and mud crabs have not been around in huge numbers with most boats report-
ing mostly modest catches. Hopefully this will change soon with the better months for these species coming up through March, April, and May. At the time of writing this report (very early in the week) the various weather sites are predicting 15 to 20 knots of wind from a Southerly direction. This will allow boats to get some shelter from points and headlands, allowing to fish some stretches of the coastline especially in the Hinchinbrook area. Â This weekend either side of the early morning high tide will be perfect
to fish for grunter, Barra and salmon up on the Hinchinbrook flats. The late afternoon low tide and the first half of the incoming will suite those that wish to target Barra and Jacks around the snags and gutters in the creeks. There is a large number of logs and debris floating in the creeks and coastline at the moment and extreme care needs to be taken especially at night. Good Fishing Roly Newton Tackle World Tully Â

Cassowary Coast Athletics hit the ground running
MARIA GIRGENTI
A GROUP of enthusiastic youngsters who are keen to run, jump, throw a discus or shot put recently braved wet weather to register at the Cassowary Coast Athletics Sign On Day at Castor Park, Mourilyan. The club is not just for youngsters who have a gift for athletics and places an emphasis on building skills and confidence in every child. There is also a focus on participation, enjoyment, technique, setting personal goals and continued self-improvement rather than to win. It’s also a great place for kids (and parents) to meet new people, bring families together and be part of an encouraging, fun community. Little Athletics promotes it is important to ‘Be Your Best’ and their motto is ‘Family, Fun and Fitness.’ Little Athletics Queensland annual registration is $125 from
five to 16 year olds. All athletes from 17 years and under must be registered with Little Athletics Queensland. Children aged 5 years to 16 years must produce their birth certificate on registration. The club which is affiliated with Little Athletics Queensland and Athletics North Queensland will be doing dual registration for athletes wishing to compete in ANQ and LAQ carnivals which is $165 for the season. Children must have already turned five to sign up or once they turn five they can then register. At the AGM held last November, a new committee was elected with Brenda Gracie (Centre Manager), Sabine Zieger (Secretary/Treasurer/Registrar), Andrea Devaney (Publicity Officer) and Steven (Grounds Manager). The club wished to thank Tod Bathe for his contributions over the last couple of years as Centre Manager, Natasha Di
Gavin Devaney and Brenda Gracie with the enthusiastic group of budding young athletes who signed up for Cassowary Coast Athletics season.
Carlo who was Publicity Officer/Grants officer for the past few years, Emma Binello who was Treasurer for the past year, as well as Matt and Kyrene Howarth for taking on the role of Canteen and Grounds Manager. Established in 1997, the Cassowary Coast Little Athletics branch have produced many national and Australian champions over the years. Weather permitting, club nights are held every Friday night (including school holidays) with warm up at 5:45pm and children taking part in a set program of five events which finishes about 8:30pm. A canteen will operate and a BBQ tea is available to purchase from 7:00pm. The program changes weekly and includes events such as running from 60m to 800m, hurdles, walks, long jump, triple jump, high jump, shot put, discus and javelin. Closed in shoes are a must for all events. The season runs in the winter months from February to October. It is important parents are aware they need to be actively involved by taking on jobs at each club night to ensure they run smoothly. Nominations are now open for athletes to compete at the McDonald’s State championships being held at the Townsville Sports Reserve from March 22 - 24. To keep updated please check out the Cassowary Athletics Facebook page and to out more information about the sport of Little Athletics visit www.laq.org.au.
Innisfail and District netballers gear up for start of season
Tigers News with Shane Muriata AFTER months of training on the hallowed turf of the Showground, it was time for the men in black and gold to showcase their level of talent and fitness against the Premiers of Townsville, the Centrals Tigers on Saturday February 16 night. Only problem was, we didn’t pack our catching mitts. We dropped the ball 15 times in a one-sided match, losing 46-12 in the process. The Spiller Matty Bowen combo proved too strong for our guys, but coach Tongy can hold his head up high with our second half showing “It’s a starting point, so I wouldn’t read too much into the score line. We were always going to struggle without some key players. There will be some changes made to ready ourselves for the next assignment. The main thing I want to point out to everyone is we are moving forward, because that one is behind us.” His post-match press release was nothing short of praise for young guns Aiden Bennett and Adam Hoare, who made the step up after a strong preseason. “Adam will get better and better with time, and Aiden, well, he’s going to be a player with an outstanding future.” Probably the most rewarding news on the Saturday was the signing of WWE Hall of Famer Darryl Grant, who put pen to paper and committed to another season behind the Banyan. As the sun set behind Mt Tyson, there was a thrilling 26 all draw against Centrals for the reserve grade teams. It
was great to see Steven Barrett a former Tigers back in town. The biggest surprise of all was seeing Hercules twin brother in Kevin Davies having a run. But, enough about size, this game had it all from being down 26-6 in the half, to my favourite Ketchell, Benny scoring a try to bring the game back on even terms. It was a courageous effort considering they only had one full training session as a team with new combinations, but Barrett still added some fuel to the flame “ Plenty to like about this group of players, but plenty to work on. It will be few weeks yet until we can settle on something. Get down to training if you’re keen for a run this season”. The Tully Tigers Rugby League season launch was an absolute success Friday night 15, when our community got together and bidded for jerseys to the tune of $22,500. The night was helped by having special guest Matty Bowen in attendance, and Timmy Murphy absolutely killing it as MC. There was even talk that the former MC will be out of a job such was the comedy value of funny man Murphatori. One of the highlights of the night was the raising of some much-needed funds for the flood affected city of Townsville and cattle farmers in the surrounding areas. A big Cheer to the local community for digging deep. By all reports that came in the morning of Sunday February 17, Matty Bowen’s kids refused to leave after swimming at alligators and stat-
ed they will be back during the holidays to stay. Friday 15, the Cassowary Coast held its annual School Rugby League Gala Day at Tully State School and didn’t the talent of some players get put on a show. On St Clare’s field of dreams, many people came to watch the resurgence of St Clares, as they ended the day as champions. It must be said that they have spent many years in the rugby league wilderness since Benny Campo left, but it seems the corner may be closer for our private school to regain footy glory. Not to be out done on the top oval of Tully State School, the high school players lead by Sipi Sipi and Ezy E Ivey put all the teams to the sword by coming 1st overall. Super coach of the Tully School team Jonnie Hughes was happy as “They loved every minute of it. Daniel Jack was a machine. We all had a very good day.” Legendary convener Chris Catter was equally impressed by the talent “We always get a good crowd in, mainly to see what the next line of superstars looks like. We were well supported by the high school students who officiated all games. Thanks must go to our NRL rep Atul, who drove all the way down from Cairns to be involved. A very strong Rep side was selected on the day by champion coach Stuart Russell to take on the Northern Cassowary Coast side which will feature players from Babinda to Mourilyan, which should be a cracker of a game. This game will pit the apprentice of Stuey and myself up against the Jedi Rugby League Master himself, Liam Kenny. Hopefully a good crowd is in attendance to catch this epic showdown. Apologies from CCIN to the Tully Tigers club for placing the 5 shirts left amount at the Tigers Jersey auction in last week’s edition instead of the final amount of $22,500.
The kick off of Townsville’s A grade representatives for the Centrals Tigers verse the A grade representative for the Tully Tigers. Leisa Spinella with the large group of all ages who took part in Innisfail & District Netball Association Come and Try Day held last week at Bessie Spiller courts. MARIA GIRGENTI THE Innisfail & District Netball Association recently held two successful Sign On days and a Come and Try Day with around 230 players in all age groups registering for the season which started this week. Over 40 attended an umpire clinic run by Desley Winkleman, held after the Come and Try Day which focused on the major rules of the game. Teams need to have a minimum of seven players and registration fees are $170 for Under 17s and $210 for 18+ with
the club providing club shirts to each member. Teams will need to purchase their own uniforms if they don’t have sponsors. Players for teams in Juniors (11 - 17 years) and Seniors (18+) are welcomed with pre-season games having started this week for two weeks and the season running from March until September. A NetSetGO program for girls and boys aged 7 -10 years will start on February 19 until June 25 (excluding school holidays) from 5:00pm to 6:15pm. Players will have an introduction to netball, ball skills, move-
ment on the court, shooting, co-ordination and having fun. Cost is $150 per registration and each registration receives a NetSetGO pack. NET program for girls and boys aged 5 to 6 years will be held in Term 3 on Tuesdays from 3:30pm to 4:30pm starting on July 16 and finishing on September 17 where they will learn netball skills in a fun and friendly environment. Cost is $100 per registration and each registration receives a NetSetGO pack. There will be representative team tryouts where it is hoped
to send a few teams to State Age championships being held at Pine Rivers, Strathpine over the school holidays from July 5 to 9. The annual Marlins clinic run by Heather McLaren will be held on March 8 in Innisfail for players aged 11 to 17, with coaches and umpires at Innisfail State College from 3:30pm to 6:30pm. Cost is $20 per player and those wishing to register can contact Leisa Spinella on 0436 477 974. At the end of March the final try-outs will be held, where a senior team (17 & under) will
be selected for Singapore and a 14 & Under team will be selected to compete in Adelaide later in the year. A six week JPL development program for those aged 17 and under will provide mentor players, coaches and umpires and every Saturday players will compete against a different association with three games in Cairns, one in Tully and Atherton. SARI HYYTINEN TULLY Sugar Mill continues to maintain its consistency for taking on new apprenticeships into 2019. There are six new apprentices onboard in 2019. “We have two electrical apprentices, two mechanical apprentices and two fabrication apprentices,” said Ann Barrie the Training and recruitment coordinator,
“We have a diesel fitter that is hired every four years.” The diesel fitter position wasn’t vacant for the apprentice intake of 2019. Tully Sugar chose to employ one of their six apprentices from Ingham this year, where the rest come from the Cassowary Coast Region. Industries love when they have the opportunity to hire
Tully Sugar Mill apprentices after their training has been completed. The Tully Sugar Mill staff can take pride in how good they are at their training of apprentices. Apprenticeships have been on offer for more than 50 years at the Tully Sugar Mill, they train for industry and they get a big variety of work that they can apply their skills as they keep learning.
