When Castelli engineered the first aero jersey for road racing back in 2006, everyone thought we were crazy. Back then, aero was only for TTs. Performance clothing meant moisture management. And you could win the Tour de France with a baggy jersey that was little more than a polyester T-shirt. Even our aerodynamic consultants expected limited gains, so we named the jersey Split Second, though, like now, we thought even small gains were worth pursuing. In the end the gains were pretty substantial, and we completely revolutionized the look of the pro peloton. We’re now on the sixth major revision of our aero jersey. Each generation has become more aero and better fitting. The Aero Race 6.0 benefits heavily from CFD analysis of wake flow in the riding position for fabric and seam placement. It also benefits from Team Ineos riders’ feedback, as we’ve worked to make the jersey comfortable for their long hours of training and then racing in every possible weather condition. Version 6.0 is our most aero and most comfortable Aero Race Jersey yet. But we’re already at work on 6.1...

METICULOUS EVOLUTION — The Free Aero Race 4 Bibshort is our top race short, which also means that it’s insanely comfortable even if you never pin on a number. The original Free Aero Race Bibshort was first introduced over a decade ago and has logged literally millions of kilometers under the backsides of our sponsored pro riders and has been the best-selling short both in the Castelli retail collection and in our Servizio Corse custom program. While the basic concept of a minimalist workhorse pro-level comfortable race short remains, every single fabric, component, stitch and construction method has been updated and improved over time. The fourth major generation of the short features the updated Progetto X2 Air Seamless seat pad. This pad separates a soft, stretchy skin care layer that moves with your body from a generously padded cushioning layer that replicates the form of your saddle. Eight-hour rides are no problem. Of course the fabrics are premium, made to our specifications by Italy’s best fabric suppliers. IF YOU HAD JUST ONE JACKET — The Perfetto RoS is the one jacket that does everything well. We initially designed it as a cool-weather training and extremeweather race piece for our pro riders, but in reality it excels in many conditions thanks to its full wind protection, great fit through stretchy fabrics, and best-in-class breathability. The current version represents the biggest performance upgrade in the four generations of this jacket. RoS in the name signifies Rain or Shine. The emphasis should be on dryweather comfort, which is where this jacket really excels, but then you get near waterproof protection if you do get caught in the rain. We worked with Gore to develop two new Castelli exclusive GORE-TEX INFINIUM™ WINDSTOPPER® fabrics. We use a light fleece-lined waterresistant version on the forwardfacing surfaces and a lighter, stretchier fabric on the back that maintains the breathability of the previous fabric while improving water repellency at the same time. The Perfetto RoS is that ideal weight: no built-in insulation so you can layer over a light base layer for moderate conditions. Or you can add a thermal jersey underneath and take it to very cold conditions. You decide.

HOW COME NO ONE EVER MADE A BETTER GABBA? — In 2010 Castelli introduced the Gabba to the pros and changed the way pros race in the rain. And cold. And ride in training. Every other performance cyclist soon saw the need for a Gabba in his or her wardrobe. We’ve made some minor updates along the way, but for the fourth-generation Gabba we started with a clean slate to make a significant upgrade. That involved moving it to near waterproof levels, which meant developing a new exclusive GORE-TEX INFINIUM™ WINDSTOPPER® fabric. We made the front-facing fabric warmer with a light brushing, while the rear-facing fabrics are lighter yet more water repellent than the previous Gabba. We made it better in the rain through seam sealing on the shoulders and a covered zipper. Based on Team Ineos testing we figured it’s better to have two pockets that are easier to access with gloved hands, though we provide an internal sleeve to keep your pump or other items from moving around. It’s not easy to make a better Gabba. We’ll keep trying.

A BETTER ARM WARMER — With Team Ineos we set out to make a better seamless arm warmer. Others on the market are made with a nylon/Lycra® blend that tends to hold moisture, but we knew we could get better moisture management with a polyester yarn. Working with polyester makes it more difficult to get the right stretch, return and manufacturing consistency, though. It took a year longer than we thought, but we’re all glad we stuck with it. These warmers are a pro rider favorite because they’re crazy light and they’re extremely warm for their weight, yet even in milder conditions you don’t overheat. They’re so stretchy you hardly feel them on, yet when you take them off they occupy a fraction of the space that normal warmers would take in your pocket.
