WELCOME TO THE 2024 ARTIOS AWARDS!

Good evening and welcome to the 39th annual Artios Awards! On behalf of the entire CSA Board of Directors, I would like to thank you for coming out tonight to celebrate casting professionals.

We’re emerging from a challenging time as many casting professionals and people across our industry were out of work for months. During that difficult time, our community came together to support each other, and I’m proud that CSA was able to play a part through a series of programs and initiatives designed to build community, foster deeper learning about our craft, and empower members to learn more about financial planning.

Through the Casting Society Cares Emergency Assistance Fund, the organization was able to support the casting community with nearly $40,000 dollars for those in financial need. We know there is even more we can do for casting professionals, and over the coming year, the money we raise tonight will help fund the Mentorship series, the Training and Education program, and more seminars, meetups, events, and networking opportunities for our members. We are also leading the way on creating safe and equitable work spaces for performers and casting professionals through a series of programs designed to educate and inspire. We also hope to continue to build bridges with performers over the coming years.

Tonight, we look forward to a future where Casting Directors will be recognized alongside our film industry peers at the Academy Awards. Thank you to the Academy governors in the casting branch and all of the academy members for their support in making that dream a reality.

Now, join me in celebrating the casting professionals who make magic on stage and screen.

Respectfully,

NIECY NASH-BETTS

HOST, LOS ANGELES

Niecy Nash-Betts is a multi-talented Emmy Award®-winning actress and producer who continues to captivate audiences with her shining talent and infectious energy both in front of and behind the camera.

Nash-Betts recently won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her portrayal of “Glenda Cleveland” in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix limited series, DAHMER-MONSTER: THE JEFFREY DAHMER STORY, based on the life of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Her unforgettable role has also garnered her Critics Choice and NAACP Image Awards, as well as Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations. DAHMER has also won a BAFTA TV Award for the category of “Best International Program”.

Released January 19, Nash-Betts currently stars in Ava DuVernay’s feature film, ORIGIN, an adaptation of Isabel Wilkerson’s book, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent. The film features Nash-Betts as “Marion” alongside Aunjanue Ellis, Jon Bernthal and Vera Farmiga.

Nash-Betts is also the host of FOX’s game show DON’T FORGET THE LYRICS, which recently wrapped production on its third season, and lends her voice to the second season of Netflix’s HUMAN RESOURCES.

From 2022 to 2023, she led the ABC series, THE ROOKIE: FEDS, where she played Special Agent Simone Clark, the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy assigned to support the Los Angeles field office.

In 2022, Nash-Betts and her wife, singer/songwriter Jessica Betts, made history as the first same sex couple to appear on the cover of Essence magazine. The cover story received a nomination for a 2023 GLAAD Media Award in the category of “Outstanding Print Article.”

Nash-Betts’ diverse career includes roles in HBO’s GETTING ON, which earned her two Emmy nominations, and Netflix’s limited Ava DuVernay series, WHEN THEY SEE US (based on the exonerated Central Park Five), which earned Nash-Betts a third Emmy nomination and an NAACP Image Award. She has also held leading roles in FOX’s SCREAM QUEENS, Showtime’s MASTERS OF SEX and TV Land’s THE SOUL MAN. In February 2022, Nash-Betts finished headlining TNT’s drama, CLAWS.

From 2004-2011 she was the host and producer of the Style Network’s home makeover show, CLEAN HOUSE, which became the network’s #1 program. Nash-Betts is well-known for her role as “Officer Raineesha Williams” on the Comedy Central hit, RENO 911!, a half-hour unscripted spoof of COPS that aired for six seasons. The show was so popular that it was also spun-off into a feature film, RENO 911: Miami, in 2007, and recently had a new incarnation as a series. Following her tenure on the show, Nash-Betts went on to star in her own FOX comedy series, DO NOT DISTURB, opposite Jerry O’Connell.

She has had featured roles in films such as SELMA; GUESS WHO, opposite Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher; CODE NAME: THE CLEANER, opposite Cedric the Entertainer and Lucy Liu; NOT EASILY BROKEN, based on the best-selling book by Bishop T.D. Jakes; and the Walt Disney Pictures summer blockbuster release G-FORCE, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. She also starred opposite Courtney Vance in Netflix’s telefilm, UNCORKED. Nash-Betts released her first book It’s Hard to Fight Naked in 2014, in which she offers a new perspective on dating and relationships.

She is developing various television and film projects through her production company, Chocolate Chick, Inc.

Nash-Betts resides in LA with her wife, where she is devoted to church and participating at charitable functions in support of causes that are close to her heart, including the prevention and awareness of HIV/AIDS, breast cancer, school violence and domestic abuse, among others. MARION DOUGHERTY NEW YORK APPLE AWARD

The Drama Book Shop opened to the public at its new home at 266 West 39th Street, between Seventh and Eighth Avenues on Thursday, June 10, 2021.

Founded in 1917 by the Drama League, The Drama Book Shop became an independent bookstore in 1923 and has since been deemed a quintessential New York City cultural institution. For over 100 years, The Drama Book Shop has been the city’s best source for theatrical works, with over 8,000 plays regularly in stock. In 2011, The Drama Book Shop received a Tony Award® Honor for Excellence in the Theatre. This award is bestowed upon individuals, organizations, and institutions that have demonstrated profound achievement in the theatre but are ineligible in any of the established Tony categories.

Longtime friends, and patrons of the bookstore, Thomas Kail and Lin-Manuel Miranda, along with Jeffrey Seller and James L. Nederlander, purchased the store from Rozanne Seelen, whose late husband Arthur Seelen had bought the store in 1958. Over the years, the store has moved several times, with its most recent location having been on West 40th Street. In 2002 a theatre troupe from Wesleyan University founded by Mr. Kail and some friends convened downstairs in the store’s 60-seat Arthur Seelen Theatre to rehearse a new musical. Written by Mr. Miranda and Ms. Hudes and directed by Mr. Kail, that show was In the Heights, which went on to win four 2008 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It opened on June 11, 2021 as a major motion picture from Warner Brothers.

The new location, designed by Hamilton scenic designer David Korins and his team, pays homage to twentieth century European cafes and reading rooms and features a full-service cafe serving coffee, teas, and light snacks.

The Drama Book Shop is a community space for everyone enthused by the Arts—students, theater fans, industry professionals and award-winning artists alike. Since 1917, The Drama Book Shop has been a mainstay of New York’s theatre scene, and with the support of the thousands of patrons that have passed through the shop’s doors, will continue to be for the next 100 years to come.
