utstanding amongst famed art publisher Edward Weston's 50-year long collection of Hollywood glamour photography are some of the most evocative portrayals ever of the beautiful, enigmatic and ultimately tragic Marilyn Monroe. Taken by some of the iconic star's most trusted photographers, these mesmerising images go far beyond the camera lens and include the last professional ones taken of her before she died.

THE FLEDGLING MOVIE STAR A young Marilyn was just starting out on her career in movies when 'Studio Shot' (left) was taken by Laszlo Willinger in 1948. Born in Hungary, Willinger was renowned for his portrait photography of movie stars and celebrities during the 1930s and 1940s. The famous

photographer's work with Marilyn during this session was a one-time departure from his normal portrait photography style. Although underpinned by his trademark dignified and alluring poses, this artful image is suffused with a hypnotic, muted wistfulness. His portraits have become collectible fine art and his 1940 series of portraits of Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh are housed in London's National Portrait Gallery. A WOMAN IN LOVE The happiness that shines so brightly in 'Honeymoon' (above) was interestingly not captured by a professional photographer. The picture was taken in 1954 when newlyweds Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio flew into Japan for their honeymoon. The press was not allowed aboard the Pan American Airline S P R I N G 2 014

flight but Kashio Aoki, the official steward for the couple, asked them if he could take some photographs. They were amongst the very few taken on the honeymoon, and Aoki kept them for 46 years before contacting Edward Weston to help him publish them. These exceptional photographs reach deep behind the carefully choreographed public persona that was Marilyn. From pensive to playful and from sultry to serene, they pay homage to a complex, multifaceted, fascinating woman whose potent appeal continues to seduce to this day. Andre De Dienes on Tobay Beach, New York. A passionate and emotional photographer, he was born in Transylvania and emigrated to the US in 1938. He initially worked with Marilyn in 1945 – then a brunette Norma Jeanne - when he hired her for one of her earliest modelling jobs and he continued to work with her for the next eight years. The beach was as deserted as it looks in the photos. Although crowded when they first arrived, storm clouds sent people scurrying home then the clouds dispersed and they started shooting. Marilyn was still new to the film industry in 1949 but Dienes remembers her having the radiant presence of an established star. And his enthusiasm was clearly infectious: “I asked her to flirt

7 4

"I asked her to flirt with my camera, to entice me with all her sex appeal and to move as fast as possible without any posing. It was a happy afternoon for both of us."

1

Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1st 1926, and would have celebrated her eightyeighth birthday this year. She died on 4th August 1962 aged 36, just two weeks after the photographs taken by George Barris.

2

After signing to 20th Century Fox, she appeared in a number of B movies, before she starred in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes in 1953 which launched her as a sex symbol superstar. Other big hits included The Sever Year Itch, Bus Stop, The Misfits and The Prince and the Showgirl.

3

Marilyn Monroe was married and divorced three times in her short life, notably to Yankees legend Joe DiMaggio and prominent playwright Arthur Miller. She never had any children, although reputedly pregnant three times, and died alone.

before Marilyn's untimely death at age 36. Barris, an American celebrity photojournalist, had been commissioned by Cosmopolitan magazine to create a photographic essay

of the star, with the resulting images – the first in North Hollywood and the other three on Santa Monica Beach – peeling back the layers and revealing a very real woman with a stunning vulnerable beauty. But it was more than 30 years after her death before Barris and Edward Weston published all of the photos that he took. When Barris first met Marilyn, the two talked about collaborating on a book together – a plan that was finally realized in 1995 when he published 'Marilyn, her Life in Her Own Words'. He also co-authored 'Marilyn, Norma Jeane' with Gloria Steinem and contributed to Norman Mailer’s book, 'Marilyn'. Gallery The 'Marilyn' Edward Weston collection of eight giclée prints is published as a limited edition of 295.

New York City Well, like the song says, "if you can make it there you can make it anywhere"! It's the big draw, the big tent, the main attraction, center-stage, open 24 hours! NYC beat me to a pulp, and then nursed me back to health. It is the kindest, most generous, most loving, most exciting place on earth. If you fall down in NYC someone will pick you up. East Hampton, NY My spiritual home town. My dearest oldest friends live there. I fell down and was picked up there. I rebuilt my mind and body there.

London The Big Smoke, Londinium, London! How can you not love London? For nearly 2,000 years there has been a mad band of people calling this insane and magical little point on earth home. As an outsider who now lives here I can feel this magic and madness - its history and glory. I

always travel by taxi as I want to witness every square inch of this great city! Cornwall I am lucky to have been escorted by some locals in Penzance and St Ives to some very secret and magical places in Cornwall. I've met many wonderful and like minded pirates there. The light is like no other place on earth. For me there is a deep resonance down on Land's End. The sea calls me there. The magic there calls me. Paris I lived in Paris, I have loved in Paris. I have exhibited my work in Paris, I have slept in the streets of Paris and drank wine on the roof of Notre Dame - I am in love with Paris. I have failed in Paris and won in Paris - I am mesmerised by the beauty of Paris.

Books The Return of the Prodigal Son, by Henri J.M. Nouwen This book is a spiritual examination of the great painting by Rembrandt, which was based on the beautiful Biblical parable of the same title. A Prayer for Owen Meany, by John Irving This is a tale of extraordinary courage, represented in the simplest of life's engagements. Life is hard, and scary, and always a surprise. The characters in this simple New England tale try their best. It's a story of trying our best. It's a prayer, a beautiful prayer. It's life. The Alchemist, by Paulo Coehlo This book reminds me that there is only a journey - and that I simply need to be awake and aware. I can fall prey to the silliness of the world all the time, the struggle, the confusion, etc. If I allow it to be a journey and remind myself that I am simply

on this journey then I have a chance at moments of pure joy. The Happiness Hypothesis, by Jonathan Haidt This is my current reading - it deals with putting ancient wisdom and philosophy to the test of modern science. And no surprise, they work together in perfect harmony. It's simply a book affirming my flawed, confused and very happy state of mind! On The Road, by Jack Kerouac This book is deeply nostalgic for me. I read it once a year to trace my love of America and a brand of madness that I subscribe to. See also anything by Hunter S. hey are tiny pieces of theatre – some figures being no more than 10mm in height – and there is a witty, tonguein-cheek quality to them that never fails to raise a smile.

Nic Joly, a new artist to Castle Galleries, juxtaposes his incredibly intricate and delicate pieces of art with rather more satirical subject matter and is never afraid to poke fun at himself or others. From his studio in Alresford, Hampshire, the sculptor uses as his starting point his incredibly dry sense of humour for the minuscule tableaux and you only have to study his inaugural spring collection for Castle Galleries to see how light-hearted irreverence permeates each piece. From the devil in a light bulb to a skier hurtling down a mountain of cocaine snow, Joly gains his inspiration from life and human transgression. His obsession with creating such tiny masterpieces from intricately painted paper and cotton-wrapped

I started to frame them up behind glass, and here we are.” The former furniture maker, who has spent his entire life whittling, creating and making objects, has created four stunning pieces of limited edition 3D artwork – each carefully hand-finished, painted and framed – and has produced the first set of signed limited photographic works of two of his 3D works. Bad Idea? and Good Idea? offer the viewer a profound sense of yin and yang. Using Christ and the devil as the icons of good and evil, the tiny sculptures are mounted inside light bulbs, demonstrating how we can choose the direction we wish to go in. In Heavy Addiction, we see the figure of a man buckling under the weight of an enormous cigarette that he is carrying on his shoulders, while On the Edge shows a man balancing precariously on the edge of a razor blade. Remarkably, Joly never uses a magnifying glass when he creates or paints his miniature figures, so even he was surprised when he saw

two of his satirical works – Recreational Drugs, and Keeping the Spark Alive, which shows a couple having sex on a cigarette lighter – made into 4ft by 2ft giclée photographs for the first time. “It was a real eye-opener,” admits the artist. “I’ve never seen the figures on that scale before, so it was fascinating to see the 4 Recreational Drugs

“I

have spent the best part of two years developing a style and technique of my own, through really close observation of the human face and form” explains Keith Maiden, who until two years ago was a struggling artist who had to resort to buying the cheapest brushes in his local Shropshire art shop. Self-taught, he worked in the design and retail sector for over twenty years until redundancy hit. “Once I lost my job I just started out selling pencil portrait sketches in Ludlow market to make some money” explains Maiden, who immediately saw the way in which buyers responded to his raw and simple black and white portraits. With no lofty aspirations to be the next fashionable artist, Maiden’s natural talent, which has not been honed by an art school education, is raw, rugged and very honest. His first piece of work at the age of 15 when he realised he had some artistic talent was a portrait of Elvis – “I hate it but my mother still has it hanging over her fireplace wall these years later” laughs Maiden, whose journey to becoming a fullyfledged artist had been driven off course by an office job he endured in order to pay the bills and raise a family. Interest snowballed after his first paintings sold, and within a short space of time he dedicated himself to painting full time. His first collection for Castle Galleries, a triptych of portraits of young women display all the

characteristic hallmarks of his style – a highly defined and realistic portraiture of the human face, in clean and assured lines which demands an emotional response. He claims not to be inspired by any one artistic style, but more general everyday experiences around him, although he acknowledges the inspiration of the black and white wildlife artist Gary Hodges, the figurative artist Mark Demsteader, as well as portrait giants Caravaggio and Lucien Freud. Working in black and white was also a decision that was taken for financial reasons, with Maiden choosing the most cost effective materials over expensive oils. Ironically the economic restraints served to create his signature monochrome style. “I paint first, and draw

after – then layer after layer of paint is applied with fingers and thumbs” he explains. Maiden likes to use a mixture of materials – a combination of acrylic, ink, graphite and raw pigment which gives a textured and definitive style. In characteristically down to earth form, he is celebrating his recent success by moving from the garden shed to what he calls a ‘proper studio’ – the classic rite of passage for any established artist, of which Maiden now joins the ranks. A chance photograph taken in a Soho street has become the inspiration for painter Chris Acheson’s mannequin doll homage to the glamorous world of the Roxy Music era

C

hris Acheson paints what he likes. A seemingly unhealthy obsession with Agent Provocateur shop window mannequins has actually been the foundation of his first collection of work for Castle Galleries and he is unapologetic. “When I left college," (he studied Fine Art at Manchester Metropolitan University), "I got a job as a bicycle courier around London’s West End, and every day I passed this Agent Provocateur shop and started taking photographs. Now, some years later, I have

finally had a chance to bring it to life.” His colourful and arresting images display a genius collision in technique producing a riot of abstract realism and colour. He admires and apes the Jeff Koons style of hyper technicolour, projecting what Acheson calls the ‘Hollywoodisation’ effect on the normality of everyday life. His three compositions depict the mundane (a London bus, a workman’s ladder, a group of drinkers outside a Soho pub) in sharp contrast to the glamorous mannequins. His

fascination with what he refers to as ‘the exoticism of everyday life’ intoxicates these urban scenes and his experimentation and bold use of colour adds immediate depth to his work. “The bric-a-brac of popular culture, cinema and music are the key subjects running through most of my work” explains Acheson. What could easily be classed as seedy is given a gloss of sophistication which is decidedly beguiling, and makes these images ‘stand out’ pieces for

An admirer of Pre-Raphaelites such as John Everett Millais, John Waterhouse and Arthur Hughes, Mancunian painters Pierre Vallette and L.S. Lowry, alongside Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons, he likes to use inspiration from a diverse range of mediums and styles, and mixing up and challenging conventional styles and compositions is what this new collection is all about.

“I have always been drawn to pop culture, the heightened colour, the juxtaposition of the glamorous and the ordinary" says Acheson. “As an artist you have to be true to yourself and paint what you like and then hope the collectors will like it too!” Gallery The collection is available as framed giclée prints or boxed canvas, with an edition of 95. Paint it, Black (and white) The Rolling Stones need no introduction, having been part of the global rock ‘n’ roll scene since 1963. Fifty-one years later, the band is still going strong. hen acclaimed photographer Michael Donald was commissioned to shoot the Rolling Stones, he broke the rule about never meeting your idols because they always disappoint. Luckily for this 47-year-old, who is launching his first collection with Castle Galleries this spring, these stalwarts of rock ‘n’ roll were the exception to that rule. When Donald was approached by Passion

Pictures to do some stills for a film they were producing about the making of the double album Exile On Main Street, he didn’t have to think twice about accepting. “I saw it as an opportunity to shoot some proper portraits of the band,” explains the photographer, who has captured myriad celebrities on film in his career. “I didn’t think the band would normally agree to sit for individual portraits like this so it was a very exciting project to work on.”

23

3

His enviable task found him on location at Stargroves, the country estate in Berkshire that Mick bought in 1970 at the time Exile On Main Street album was being recorded. It was a trip down memory lane for Charlie Watts and Mick Jagger, whose portraits were shot there. Stargroves is a pinnacle part of their history; it was there they recorded part of the album before leaving the UK in the spring of 1971 to avoid the Labour government’s 93% tax on high earners. “Charlie hadn’t been back to the house since, so walking around with him, reminiscing, was fascinating. Then Mick sailed in like he’d never left,” says Donald, who flew to Manhattan to shoot Keith Richards and photographed Ronnie Woods at his manager’s office in London. The results of the photoshoots are a portfolio of four evocative images that reflect each of the band members’ personalities – the years of a rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle coupled with the dignified look of elder statesmen – and, in fact, the photograph of Charlie went on to be exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in 2010 as part of the Taylor Wessing prize. "As a photographer, you are always after something different – a tiny peek of the real person behind the veneer." As an artist, Donald’s aim is to have his images tell a story but with only a few minutes in which to capture them, he admits he approached the shoot with a modicum of trepidation. “As a photographer, you are always after something different – a tiny peek of the real person behind the veneer,” he says.“I have to say, they look amazing. They aren’t trying or pretending to look young but they are true rock ‘n’ rollers and utterly professional. They’ve been doing this for years so they know exactly how to give you a picture and how to behave in front of a camera. F I N E A R T C OL L E C T OR

“The fact that Charlie and Mick were shot at Stargroves gives the story an extra layer because it is so relevant to the Stones and their history.” The limited edition spring collection comprises a set of four silver gelatin prints that are available in standard, medium and large format and can be bought framed or unframed.

MAJOR EXHIBITION OF KENTON ORIGINALS GETS UNDERWAY

W

ith inspiration from New York to London to Paris, leading cityscape artist Paul Kenton has embarked on a new adventure, creating 35 original pieces for a major exhibition in London. ‘Capital Impressions’, is a body of work that explores the sights, views and moods of some of the world’s most iconic

cities. Taking us on a robust and multi-layered visual journey through his creative process, he says: “I love to capture the spirit of a scene, adding layers of expression which just can’t be captured in a straight pictorial study, almost like a short film." The originals are on show in London's Castle Fine Art, Bruton Street until early April.

One of Eric Clapton’s master built guitars, painted by abstract impressionist artist, Alex Echo, has been sold for £20,000. A chance meeting between Clapton and Echo at a Rolling Stones concert led to the unique customisation of the Fender Stratocaster. The money raised has benefited the Crossroads Centre, a recovery facility for those suffering with alcohol and drug addiction, founded by Clapton.

Millar auction supports popular venue Acclaimed UK artist, Alexander Millar, has donated an original oil painting, My Way, for a fund raising initiative in support of the Newcastle Theatre Royal. A silent auction for the artwork was launched at a special evening hosted by ITV regional anchorwoman Pam Royle. Long-time friend and fan of local artist Millar’s work, Royle said “Alexander’s story is quite something – having never trained as an artist and now being one of

Setting the tone

the most popular in the country is quite inspirational." The silent auction raised thousands of pounds for the venue.

Euphoria Audio have chosen Bob Barker's atmospheric artwork to feature on their self-titled debut album. Based on ‘Love In The Rain’, the band says: "The imagery reflects the artist’s nostalgia for Yorkshire, which is something that drew us even closer to the piece. The optimism of the lovers and the red umbrellas connects with the music and what our band is about." S P R I N G 2 014

Hamish Blakely

1 The Lost Reel Canvas edition of 95 Image 28” x 28” Framed £695

Timeless beauty captured in a moment Hamish Blakely is renowned for his technical excellence, capturing the essence of a moment with the deft strokes of a paintbrush. In his latest collection, he explores beauty and its relationship with the passing of time, perfectly encapsulating the concept in his wife and muse

P

artly inspired by the heroines in classic black and white movies, Hamish Blakely’s new releases have a distinctive vintage feel to

them. ‘Timeless’ and ‘The Lost Reel’ are studies in beauty by this long-time favourite artist of Castle Galleries and with all his paintings, the devil is in the detail.

These studies in oil capture the juxtaposition of old and modern, the ephemeral and the constant. And it is his masterful use of light and shade that bring his rich and textured figurative paintings to life. The model is his muse and wife Gail, who has long been the subject of his work. The sense of intimacy is so keen that it is

no surprise that they are often described as “love letters” to his wife. ‘Timeless’ has echoes of the infamous Christine Keeler photograph by Lewis Morley, but this is a mere suggestion. While the beauty of the model is obvious, the vintage and modern cameras in the background act as a metaphor. “It is beauty that is the subject of the title, despite shifts in fashion, body image and the individual identity of each era and decade,” explains Blakely. “This is depicted by the old and very modern camera. “I think there is something comforting and necessary in those things that remain constant through changing times, something that stands proud amidst the ebb and flow.” In ‘The Lost Reel’, it is the old-style movie camera set upon Gail’s face that offers a poignancy and sense of nostalgia. But these paintings are more than a simple study of a woman, says Blakely. “These are portraits as well as narrative pieces and the expression on Gail’s face always lends a depth and mystery,” he says. “Trying to capture what she is thinking is a very important challenge.” He paints instinctively, using the paint and brushes to get the feel for his portraits just right, and does not sketch or plan the composition. Instead, he fine tunes his work at the final stages. “Despite the maxim of ‘fat over lean’ with oil paint, I paint lean over fat and fat over fat and whatever it takes to create the ‘feel’ I am after,” he says. “It can be painstaking, I want the image to have body and brush marks. I think instinct is vital. If I think too much and over-analyse what I am doing, I get blocked and make odd decisions. If I can ‘let go’ a bit, things start to work out.” Gallery Come and view the stunning new pieces from Hamish Blakely's spring collection - in galleries now. castlegalleries.com

Stuart McAlpine Miller

FACE VALUE Stuart McAlpine Miller's sensational new EYECONS collection hones in on the face of celebrity

T

he unmistakable, always tantalising work of Stuart McAlpine Miller takes a step in a slightly different direction in this new collection of five striking images of iconic women. In 'Commotion', conveying Keira Knightley, 'Developing The Nation' depicting Naomi Campbell, 'Striking The Pose' featuring Madonna, 'The Origins Of Woman Kind', portraying Marilyn Monroe, and 'Three Vital Steps Forward' picturing Lady Gaga, McAlpine Miller has deliberately concentrated entirely on the celebrities' faces, which for him is a very recent development in his work. "Their face is what they are known for, how we recognise them, and everything else is secondary," said McAlpine Miller. "So I decided to make faces the focus of the pieces. But what we look at isn't who they are. What we see and know about them is largely led by the media, who can elevate someone one moment and all but destroy them the next. The reality is that they are not demi gods but real people who eat, drink, breathe, laugh and cry the same as everyone else." His brilliant signature layering technique and clever positioning of light and colour are as visually compelling as ever, with the illusion of transparency drawing the viewer in and conning the eye. "What I wanted to portray on several levels is that what we see isn't always the reality," says McAlpine Miller. "There is the illusion of the paint but I've also tried to suggest the illusion of the women –

the fantasy person that the media and marketing machines feed us." "I chose these women because they are a near iconic representation of what is deemed to be a celebrity," he explained. "There are the obvious differences between them in terms of the work they do – fashion, music and acting - but there are also big differences in how each of them is perceived. A fascination with Marilyn Monroe, for example, has endured for more than six decades but Lady Gaga's appeal might only last until we move on to the next superstar. So are they real icons or just fleeting 4

media-made creations? Icons or 'eyecons'?" For McAlpine Miller, working on these paintings was a real joy. "Focusing on facial aspects of individuals has inspired me to develop more of this kind," he enthused "and I'm currently working on a new idea, directly related to this collection."
