CREATIVE REVIEW: A LOOK BACK AT 2014
The Summer Exhibition 2014 was launched at Castle Fine Art on Bruton Street, Mayfair featuring a stunning selection from some of the finest painters, photographers and sculptors working in contemporary art today. The beautifully curated display presented a spectrum of visual art in over fifty works. The pieces featured offered the viewer a new and exciting perspective on the contemporary art scene. Hailing from London to Hawaii, the artists were carefully selected for their striking individuality and talent – traits that have drawn them together despite their differing mediums and methodologies. Whilst this was the inaugural Summer Exhibition for Castle Fine Art, this style of exhibition is not without its own history and heritage. Influenced by the displays of the French Salon, this tradition finds its beginnings in Seventeenth Century Paris. It was there that specially selected works from some of the finest painters in Europe adorned the walls of the Academy, quickly becoming one of the most prestigious and popular events in the art market calendar. We are proud to announce that several artists who featured in the Summer Exhibition 2014 have subsequently gone on to achieve great things; from solo shows, to praise in the media or even being awarded publishing contracts with Washington Green, the fine art publisher to Castle Galleries and Castle Fine Art. IN:SIGHT
BUILDING CREATIVE TALENT: 2015 This year, Washington Green launched IN:SIGHT – an open call for unsigned emerging visual artists to apply to join the ranks of some of the UK’s most talented artists. IN:SIGHT was access all areas – from painters, street artists and sculptors to photographers and sketchers, no style, genre or medium was off limits. Aiming to reach a wide audience nationwide, a campaign was launched in April 2015, inviting artists to submit their portfolios for review by our dedicated Creative Team, for the chance to be selected to exhibit their work in our Summer Exhibition 2015. The response was overwhelming with over 400 submissions received, and reinforced our belief that the UK is awash with some of the finest creative minds yet to be discovered. Herein lies our passion and commitment to giving emerging artists a platform, supporting and developing the talent of both UK and international artists. IN:SIGHT is a unique opportunity to showcase and capture the raw talent that those in the emerging art scene have to offer. Due to ongoing government cuts in Arts funding, Washington Green – as the UK’s leading fine art publisher – feels a responsibility to give something back and invest in the future of the UK arts scene. We recognise the importance of nurturing home grown talent and providing a stage for artists to shine and express themselves. Washington Green and Castle Fine Art are proud to present the artists featured in the Summer Exhibition 2015. We have great belief in the promise of this eclectic and talented group, and look forward to watching as their own respective success stories unfold over the coming months and years.

FRÉDÉRIC DATY TRINITY
International sculptor Frédéric Daty joined Washington Green Fine Art’s portfolio of contemporary artists after taking part in the Summer Exhibition 2014. Following unprecedented interest in his innovative wall sculptures, Frédéric was signed by the fine art publisher to create a series of original works for its nationwide network of Castle Fine Art and Castle Galleries. Using the skills he learnt while working as a graphic designer in Paris, he begins a piece by sketching the scene before mapping out the sculpture in a digital format. Layers of hand-cut steel sheets are then built up and polished with varnish and coloured tar. The individual
elements stand away from the wall at varying angles, creating a 3D effect. He uses stylised shapes and forms to produce simple and clear sculptures that command people to stop and think. Daty has recently enjoyed his first UK solo show at Castle Fine Art, South Molton Street. ‘Trinity’ saw iconic London scenes from Westminster to Big Ben given a metallic makeover – the show caused such a stir that a number of his pieces sold before being hung on the gallery walls.

SCARLETT RAVEN THE 11TH HOUR
Scarlett Raven first burst onto the Castle Fine Art scene in the Summer Exhibition 2014, to such acclaim that her first solo show followed shortly after.
being published as a signed limited edition boxed canvas of 100, with £100 from each purchase being donated to The Royal British Legion.
In collaboration with The Royal British Legion, Scarlett created The Eleventh Hour No. 1, gifting the original to be auctioned at the annual Poppy Ball, to help support war veterans both past and present. This piece was also displayed in Trafalgar Square by The Royal British Legion as part of their Armistice Day activity [pictured].
Most recently, Scarlett has also proved to be a source of inspiration for a future generation of artists. Several primary schools, who based their art projects around the WWI centenary, got in touch to ask her for her artistic tips, to record a message for the children, to judge art competitions and give speeches… a popularity that continues until this day [pictured].

MECHANICA
EVERY PIECE OF ME Mechanica’s first foray into art was very clandestine, with the artist keeping it secret from even his friends and family. Only after his sculptures, hung in his home, began receiving relentless admiration from visitors, did he feel ready to take his art beyond the walls of his house, and showcase it to a wider audience at the Summer Exhibition in 2014. Following the success that he enjoyed there, Dan Lane aka Mechanica has continued to accrue a following of collectors and admirers. Launching his first solo show ‘Every Piece Of Me’ at Castle Fine Art on
South Molton Street in London was a proud moment for Mechanica, as well as his many friends, family and staunch collectors who joined us to celebrate with him. The event was extremely well attended, and featured in many London based and regional media titles. Over half of the exhibition pieces were sold during the course of the evening, and the remainder will begin to tour throughout the UK network of Castle Fine Art and Castle Galleries later this year, with Mechanica making special artist appearances at selected galleries.

Mark Powell grew up in West Yorkshire and went on to study fine art, drawing and painting at Huddersfield University, having enrolled one day by accident when decided to browse the university studios one morning, having just lost his job. He began a conversation with who turned out to be the Head of Department, and within a few hours he was enrolled to study.

It was at this point that he was ‘discovered’ by an American website with a large following. In an increasingly digital age where there is a growing fascination with what he calls the ‘glossy magazine concept’ of beauty, Mark’s work aims to demonstrate that beauty is subjective, and isn’t only found in youth. His intricate biro pen drawings focus MARK POWELL
on portraiture of the older generation, featuring a series of individuals that tell their own story through their wrinkles and scars. He sketches on unusual canvasses including antique manuscripts, old maps and vintage newspapers – all sourced from his travels around the world – some of which date as far back as the 18th century. 15 14:50

Mark’s work is currently being exhibited at selected galleries in the Castle Fine Art and Castle Galleries network, as well as in shows around the world as his fan base continues to grow.

CURATING & COLLECTING ART It has been a pleasure to work with Holly Eldridge our Exhibition Coordinator as well as our Creative Team to curate this exhibition. For IN:SIGHT to receive so many submissions in its inaugural year was a great achievement and, I believe, testament to the reputation that we have in the art industry, due to the talent of both our staff and our portfolio of artists. In reviewing the work submitted by so many gifted aspiring artists, we were pleased to see such diversity of subject and medium. I am often asked what I look for when critiquing art, but it’s not possible to apply a set of criteria to pieces that are subjective by their very nature. This is not an exact science; it is a process gleaned
from years of experience and conviction to bow to gut instinct.
I hope that the Summer Exhibition 2015 lends credence to that philosophy, and we are merely beginning our journey with some of the talented individuals exhibiting this year.
Initially, I go by what inspires me, what grabs my attention. I look for work that’s inventive, credible, breaking new ground. In terms of publishing, I have to see longevity Glyn Washington, in a project; my interest is piqued not only by the work I happen to be Founder and Creative Director of Washington Green Fine Art viewing, but where I can see that artist in one, five or ten years time. If I had to name one element that I would say elevates an artist from being good to great, I would have to say ‘vision’. Execution can be honed, a style can be refined but, without vision, an artist can’t hope to reach an audience and truly be remembered in years to come for their art.

INTRODUCING THE EXHIBITION The Summer Exhibition 2015 is a showcase for high calibre emerging visual artists. Representing the diverse nature of contemporary art, the exhibitors range from painters, photographers and sculptors working in a myriad of materials from pen and pastels to charcoal and oils. This exhibition brings together artists based solely on their skill and creativity, regardless of style, experience or background. Our resolute pursuit of excellence negates social barriers, transcends generations and does not recognise industry elitism. Our exhibitors hail from all four corners of the UK, with some international names in the mix as well. They differ in age, experience, methodology, subject matter and medium; all of which

Their collective talents combine to take the viewer on a journey between the precision of pointillism portraiture, visual storytelling through photography, the intricate beauty of origami, landscapes made striking by their representation, oil paintings of heroes from childhood literature, and more.
Browsing this carefully curated exhibition, you will find work by artists who have honed their skills by undertaking Fine Art degrees, whereas others are self-taught, having only pursued their creative output after first undertaking careers in fields as varied as

AMY
DONALDSON: Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Amy Donaldson studied Fine Art at the University of North Florida before moving to Chicago. Working with oil paint, raw pigment, crushed organic shells and spray paint, Amy’s abstract paintings are inspired by expressionists William de Kooning and Richard Diebenkorn. She has exhibited her work widely in the United States, including at the renowned Art Basel Miami. Amy said: “Using a fusion of crushed, powdered natural pigments with oil paint that are applied in a freely expressive manner, I build layers of paint giving an organic appearance. Colour and texture are important to me to stimulate the senses in a positive way, leaving the viewer with feelings of hope and compassion.”

BOB
OXLEY: Born and living in Stockport, Greater Manchester, Bob Oxley is a self-taught artist specialising in low brow pop surrealism. Working in acrylic on canvas, Bob’s work explores the themes of the loss of natural habitat and species extinction. He references everything from photo-realistic wildlife to American low brow art as sources of inspiration behind his works. Bob said “The approach to my work is all about being in the moment, the act of making the work and giving myself over to the process and the chemistry which I have nurtured over the years. I wanted the work to look like it was made quickly and loosely but on inspection every brushstroke is considered and painted meticulously, something loose and free, but in fact is complex, which is what nature is all about.”

ATKINS: Born and living in Nottingham, Craig Atkins is a self-taught artist and photographer who mixes modern day digital portraiture with Sixteenth Century art to create innovative and romantic oil painting edits. Craig’s romanticised works are evocative of paintings by Rembrandt and John William Waterhouse, encapsulating the Pre-Raphaelite era of beauty, truth, and innocence. Craig said: “I start from principal photography with model selection, wardrobe and lighting. After that textures, background scenery and colours are added to unify into one blended painterly edit which can then be produced into Giclée prints, canvas block prints, wax encaustics and aluminium prints.”

WALKER: Born in London, David Walker trained as an architect before establishing himself as an architectural illustrator. Alongside his day job, David has been producing fine art paintings in watercolour, oil paint and pastels for over a decade. Abstract in style, his work explores how light, shade and atmosphere can combine with architecture to produce a kind of sublime beauty. His regularly exhibits his work in the UK and has won several prestigious awards. David said: “My fascination with architecture and the built environment is deep rooted. I trained as an architect and practiced for 12 years before establishing myself as an architectural artist; a perspective artist producing commissioned architectural perspectives using various rendering techniques, primarily watercolour.”

MATHER: Born and living in Blackburn, Elaine Mather enjoyed a successful career working in textile design for some of the top UK & American textile companies for many years. After leaving the textile industry, Elaine set her sights on the fine art world. Working in mostly acrylic on canvas, her work captures alluring landscapes and nature through the seasons. Vincent Van Gogh’s vibrant landscapes are one of her key influences. Elaine said: “My work is mostly landscape true or semi-realistic. I like to create inspirational landscapes with the changing seasons conveying a feeling, taking the viewer immediately to a warm Spring day or crisp Winter morning. My use of colour adds interest and drama to my paintings and I believe can create a focal point in an otherwise minimalistic setting in someone’s home.”

SAFE: Born in Wordsley, West Midlands and currently living in Stourbridge, Emma Safe graduated from Liverpool School of Art with a first class honours degree in the late nineties. Her large-scale, charcoal drawings centre on observation of nature and contemporary life. They are created outdoors in all weathers; a method which endows her works with spontaneity and freedom. Emma said: “Drawing is my way of responding to the world and getting to know particular locations; through the act of drawing I make physical, psychological and spiritual connections with my environment and the people within it. Charcoal drawing, for me, is the most immediate and direct form of expression; it allows the artist no hiding place - no tricks; just charcoal!”

MIKHAIL: Born and living in Harlow, Essex, Fadi Mikhail studied at The Slade School of Fine Art in London before training as an iconographer under the guidance of famed icon-painter Isaac Fanous in Los Angeles. Working in oil on canvas, Fadi’s paintings are inspired by the stories of childhood. He names British painters such as Stanley Spencer, Paul Nash and John Bratby as some of his biggest influences. Fadi said: “My work is concerned with the joy of remembering childhood literature – both books and film – while enjoying the act of making a good painting. I love to close my eyes and remember what it is to ride around the river bend with Pocahontas, or to be just like one of the lost boys, or to find the mysterious Aslan in Narnia. Mix that with the love of paint itself and you have my dreams in a bottle.”

GEOFF
CHAPPELL: Born in Buckinghamshire, Geoff Chappell migrated to Australia for 24 years before returning to the UK where he now lives in Newcastle upon Tyne. A self-taught artist, Geoff creates his vibrant abstract paintings using airbrushes and acrylic water based paint on canvas. Art Deco designs and architecture, as well as his experience working as an engineer – where he was captivated by turning pieces of metal – have inspired his works. Geoff said: “Seeing the metal turn in a lathe, producing a series of circles on the surface inspired my works. The light then reflects, changing the metal into a mirror which reflects the colours from the surrounding environment. The circles are made up of combinations of colours and, as the work develops, takes on the meaning of either an emotion or memory.”

GEOFF
FOWLER: Born in London, Geoff is currently living in Barry, Wales. Having studied art at Central Saint Martins in London, Geoff was tutored by the English illustrator Raymond Briggs in his youth. Working in oil paints, Geoff’s surrealist fantasy works are influenced by abstract, figurative painters such as Vladimir Dunjic, Alexander Sulimov, Michael Sowa. Geoff said: “I would describe my works as a view of life with a touch of surrealism and a dash of humour. Character-led images with a twist in the tail”.

DAVIES: Born in Cornwall, Glyn Davies is currently living in Anglesey, North Wales. With a family background of fine artists and art lecturers, Glyn has always been drawn to the world of art. After undertaking a degree in Photography, Film & TV he enjoyed a successful career as a professional photographer for over 20 years before establishing his own gallery in 2002. Landscape is the central theme to Glyn’s photographic works that aim to capture the beauty of the natural world. Glyn said: “My love of the landscape, of wild places and solitude has been my driver, my inspiration. My works combine fragile naked human forms with the wild landscapes I’ve always revelled in, exploring the sensuous relationship of the human body to the natural environment and the elements.”

HOPE
CHAPMAN: Born in Oxford, Hope Chapman relocated to Birmingham to study Fine Art at Margaret Street School of Art in 2010. Working in Pitt ink pen on paper, Hope creates detailed pointillism portraits of unnamed models photographed by the late fashion photographer Helmut Newton. Hope’s other influences include contemporary artist Laurie Lipton’s drawings and traditional Tibetan mandala designs. Hope said: “Newton’s photographs are a luxurious documentation of past decades. Fashionable, empowering, elegant women are portrayed in semi-erotic settings, inspiring me to create luminous, vivid portraits. I have combined the forceful aesthetic with detailed, structured drawings using the accuracy and patience of traditional Tibetan mandalas. For me, dot work is a meditation.”

MANN: Born in Strathspey, Aberdeenshire, Jodie Mann is currently living in Edinburgh. A self-taught artist, Jodie’s Fine Art Photography is inspired by her love for her home in the Highlands of Scotland – with its geology, ancient plant life and glacially formed landscapes. As a photographer and a makeup artist her fashion inspired images follow in the footsteps of photographers Nick Knight and Rankin. Jodie said: “I am a visual storyteller with the aim to inspire others. Through my photography, I explore Scotland’s rich history, myths and legends combined with her unique nature and landscapes. My work is a blend of drama, power, grace and mystery, which is predominantly displayed through the female form.”

HAIGH: Currently living in Buckinghamshire, Jos Haigh is a scientist by profession who has turned selftaught artist. Working in acrylics on canvas, her semiabstract floral works are inspired by the impressionist school of painters, in particular, Van Gogh. Contemporary artist Georgia O’Keefe also has a big influence on her work. Jos said: “I have not had any formal art school training but I have always sketched, coloured and painted ever since I can remember. I’m all about flowers. Blazing colours of big beautiful blooms that are both dreamy and luscious. I like working in acrylic because it allows me to use strong colours with texture to add depth and vitality to my art.”

NATHAN
ROBINSON: Currently living in Dumfries, Scotland, Nathan Robinson is the youngest artist to exhibit work as part of IN:SIGHT 2015. Nathan didn’t decide to get an art qualification through school but instead has taught himself virtually all the skills he knows. After taking a blacksmithing class and falling in love with the trade, he built himself a forge and began to create his horse sculptures out of steel. Nathan said: “I hope to become a name that says ‘quality’ and produces breath-taking, eye capturing one-off sculptures.”

NIGEL
MASON: Born in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, Nigel Mason is currently living in Ilfracombe, Devon. From an early age, Nigel taught himself to paint and pursued art as a hobby until he decided to undertake a degree in Fine Art from Plymouth University when he was 38. He then went on to have a successful career teaching art at the North Devon College in Barnstaple. Working in oil on canvas, Nigel paints a variety of landscapes, beach scenes, and figurative works inspired by his local area. He describes his artistic influences as Rembrandt, Sickert, Vuillard, Degas, Whistler. Nigel said: “My work depicts moments in time. Incidents, usually, between people that speak of human behaviour and relationships. They are staged in a mythical past time that evoke memory, nostalgia and an idealised existence.”

PETER
VIET-LU: Peter studied Fine Art sculpture at Loughborough University, graduating with first class honours. In his artwork, he first creates origami figures which he photographs then sketches in various staged scenes, using pen and ink, acrylic spray paint and graphite on board. He exhibits his work locally in his spare time whilst working in a gallery and cites artists such as Robert J. Lang, Hanna Werning, Chris Bourke and Mike Giant as influences. Peter said: “I use everyday objects to develop character based art, combining humour and engaging imagery to illustrate my imagination. “Using traditional instructions, I manipulate the existing paper form to recreate in my own aesthetic ideals. I document and reinterpret the structure to capture what would otherwise be a fragile and impermanent state. The result is a series of stripped down ‘origami inklings’ in soft and hard monochrome mediums; combined with chaotic lines within rigid structured ones.”

READDY: Born in Tunbridge Wells, Ray Readdy is now living in Newquay, Cornwall. Ray is a self-taught artist that produces conceptual, Pop art inspired, minimalist artworks. His sculptures are made from aluminium, stainless steel, plastic and even existing everyday objects. He lists his artistic influences as Rene Magritte, Andy Warhol, Mauro Perucchetti and Jeff Koons amongst many others. Ray said: “Through my sculptures, I am attempting to express the mysterious nature of our thoughts and dreams. The idea of the unexpected appeals to me - questions without answers. Other pieces make reference to social and political matters such as the fragile and impermanent nature of our lives, and examine the consumerist culture and lifestyle of contemporary society.�

ROBERT
BOWERS: Born in Dudley, now living in Claverley, Wolverhampton, Robert Bowers studied Fine Art at Wolverhampton University. Robert had a number of other positions – including teaching life drawing at Dudley college – before becoming an artist full time. Working in a variety of stone, metal, wood, bronze, resin, plaster, clay, recycled materials and found objects Robert specialises in contemporary abstract sculpture. The stone sculptures of the late John Paddison, architecture nature and psychology all provide an inspiration for Robert’s works. Robert said: “My work is based on human conditions, all my pieces have hidden meanings, it may be a sentence, a moment in time or an emotional feeling.”

BRUCE: Veronica Bruce is an award-winning abstract artist living and working in Chicago. After receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Illinois in 2004 and completing a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 2011, she has gone on to exhibit her works at art shows across America. Working mainly in oils, her nature inspired paintings explore ideas of universal emotional depth. Veronica said: “My creative style for painting brings to life a balance of playful, passionate and frenetic energy with calming stabilizers such as lines of the horizon, natural forms and structured, architectural elements. Through these constructs my work strives to unveil universal, emotional depth linked with instinctual realms within foundational, grounded actions of line and space.”

YVONNE
BELLAMY: Born in Liverpool, Yvonne Bellamy currently lives in Sheffield. After spending thirty years working in the health profession as a Podiatrist, Yvonne decided to turn her love of art into a full time career. She retired from the health profession in 2012 and converted her surgery to a much loved art studio. Working in oils, Yvonne specialises in female portraits from the Art Deco period. The body of work featured in the Summer Exhibition comes together to form a study of Tamara de Lempicka; an homage to one of Yvonne’s favourite and most influential sources of inspiration, and one of the most memorable artists of the Art Deco movement. Yvonne said: “On moving to Sheffield from Liverpool in the fifties, I excelled at arts and crafts at school and desperately wanted to go on to art college. But things being as they were back then I had to get a ‘proper job’, and so followed a career in the health profession. “I now have the time to indulge myself in my passion for my art once again – my inspirations come from my love of classical artworks, fashion, design and the theatre.”
