Rossland man charged with Castlegar parcel thefts SUBMITTED Rossland News

A Rossland man has been arrested on 14 counts

of theft of mail in Castlegar. Canada Post in Castlegar had been noticing a recent trend of customer complaints of not re-

ceiving mail items addressed to area residents. They contacted the RCMP on Nov. 27, and after an internal investi-

gation by both Canada Post and the RCMP, the 36 year-old was arrested. The man, who police could not name, worked

as a part-time contractor for Canada Post. He is scheduled for his first court appearance Jan. 4, 2012 in Castlegar.

It has been two years since Gloria Taylor was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease), a rapidly and progressive fatal neuro-degenerative disease. Taylor, who was born and raised in Castlegar, has been involved in a court case she hopes will allow her and others in a similar position to legally end their lives. The case is the first constitutional challenge in 18 years to Criminal Code sanctions that make physician-assisted suicide illegal in Canada. The lawsuit was filed in April by the B.C. Civil Liberties Association (BCCLA). Taylor, who is one of five plaintiffs involved in the suit, joined the lawsuit in June. “The lawsuit is challenging the laws that make it a criminal offence to assist seriously and incurably ill individuals to die with dignity,” said Grace Pestine, litigation director for the BCCLA and lawyer for the case, in an interview with the Castlegar News. “We believe all Canadians should have the right to a digni-

fied, compassionate and peaceful death.” Taylor, 63, now lives in West Kelowna but still has strong roots in Castlegar; Her mother Anne lives here. She first felt symptoms of ALS in 2003, in the form of cramping in her hands, feet and limbs. On Dec. 9, 2009, she was diagnosed with ALS by a neurologist at Kelowna General Hospital. Eighty percent of people diagnosed with ALS die within

two to five years of diagnosis. Her muscles began to atrophy (shrink) and she had difficulty using her limbs, and often experienced difficulty breathing. She was told in January of 2010 by neurologist Dr. Briemberg of Vancouver that she would likely be paralyzed in six months and likely die within the year. She has fared better than the prediction by Dr. Briemberg; however, she has lost the use of most of her

fingers and has difficulty walking due to the loss of muscle and must use a wheelchair to go longer distances. “One of my greatest fears is to be reduced to a condition where I must rely on others for all of my needs,” said Taylor in an affidavit. “I do not want to live in a bedridden state, stripped of dignity and independence. “I know I am dying, but I am far from depressed. I have some down time - that is part and parcel of the experience of knowing you are terminal. But there is still a lot of good in my life; there are still things, like special times with my granddaughter and family, that bring me extreme joy. I will not waste any of my remaining time being depressed. “I intend to get every bit of happiness I can wring from what is left of my life so long as it remains a life of quality; but I do not want to live a life without quality.” In her affidavit, Taylor said she is fearful about the progression of her disease. “As ALS generally affects the ability to control the muscles used to breathe, I use a respiratory ventilator when sleeping and already use it some-

times in the evening just to watch television. I fear that I will eventually suffocate and die struggling for air, like a fish out of water.” “I’m asking the court to change the laws in Canada so that all Canadians, including myself, have the right to die with dignity,” she said. “I am asking the mercy of the court to allow me the option to work with my doctor to minimize my pain and maximize the peacefulness of my dying. I should be able to make the choice about how much suffering to endure, based on my beliefs and values. All of my life, I’ve been a supporter of the dying with dignity movement. I strongly believe that Canadians like me should have the choice and comfort of aid in dying. “It doesn’t make any sense that it’s legal for me to commit suicide, but it’s illegal for someone to help me to die at peace, without pain, in the comfort of my home, with family and friends surrounding me.” The case is currently in front of B.C. Supreme Court and is expected to wrap up in mid-December. The ruling is expected some time in late 2012.

City A Christmas Musical for all ages Castlegar News Reporter

The two newest members of Castlegar City Council, Sue Heaton-Sherstobitoff, top, and Dan Rye, below, during Dec. 5 swearing in with Judge Fabbro. Craig Lindsay photos

Castlegar’s city council for the 201114 term was sworn in at the inaugural meeting of council on Dec. 5 at the Community Forum. A solid crowd of around 50 family members, friends, and well-wishers was on hand during the meeting to witness the ceremony. The councillors, Deb McIntosh, Russ Hearne, Kevin Chernoff, Dan Rye, and Sue Heaton-Sherstobitoff, and Mayor Lawrence Chernoff, marched to the forum in a procession led by bagpiper Archie Stewart. “It was good, said Rye. “It was very short, but I knew it was going to be. I’m looking forward to getting down to work. I’m sure the

next meeting will be more intense than this one. Rye enjoyed the experience of being sworn in and admits to being nervous. “I’ve been thinking of this for a couple of years, he said. “It’s been a long time coming. The election process is over and the people voted for me and want me to come in and do a good job for them and that’s what I plan on doing. At the meeting, mayor Chernoff assigned each councillor his or her new committee appointments and also gave out the deputy mayor schedule for 2012. Dates were also set for 2012’s council meetings which start on Tuesday, Jan. 3 and conclude on Monday, Dec. 17. Council meetings continue to be the first and

third Monday of every month, except for July and August which have only one meeting each. In case of a holiday Monday, the meeting is moved to Tuesday (Jan. 3, May 22, and Sept. 4). Both Rye and Heaton-Sherstobitoff took part in the new councillor training seminar in Rossland last week. “It was very good, said Rye. “It was very intense. Wednesday was very long, a 13 hour day. We start at eight in the morning and went to nine o’clock at night, but we had a lot of very good speakers. “Thursday we started again at eight in the morning and went to about three o’clock. We learned a lot. We learned about the process of being a councillor.

Two Chernoffs, one festive challenge CRAIG LINDSAY Castlegar News Reporter

Upon hearing of Mayor Chernoff and Councillor Chernoff getting stuck in the Public Works yard after working on the float all night, I asked Councillor Chernoff to recount his James Bond-style adventure in freeing himself and the mayor. “Twas the night before Winterfest, well maybe two nights before, when all through the Public Works yard, not a creature was stirring, not even

a mouse, the councillor waxed poetic. “The decorations were hung on the City float with care in hopes that all the good girls and boys of Castlegar would enjoy Winterfest. While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads – the Mayor in his toque, and Councillor in his cap... And this is where all similarities to ‘Twas the night before Christmas’ end. As the Mayor and Councillor Chernoff tried to depart the

Public Works yard they quickly realized everyone else had left and they were locked inside. The electronic gate could not be opened without a key card and neither of them had one. Being resourceful, Councillor Chernoff gained access to the electronics of the gate opener and tricked the sensor into opening the gate. They both proceeded to exit the works yard thinking all their problems were over. Not so, now they had to close the gate. It sounded

easy but when Councillor Chernoff tried to close the gate to get out he kept triggering the infrared beams which caused the gate to open again. So what was one to do? Councillor Chernoff brings his best Mission Impossible skills to the task but, try as he might, his body still triggers the sensors and the gate opens again and again. The final solution sees Councillor Chernoff getting down on his hands and knees

and crawling under the beams, all the while having the Mayor laughing out loud. With the gate finally being secure the Mayor and Councillor Chernoff were relieved that no one got pictures. They sprang to their vehicles, to their team they gave a whistle, and away they both drove like the down of a thistle. But, they exclaimed, ‘ere as they drove out of sight... “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!

School Board debates what to do with windfall TIMOTHY SCHAFER Trail Daily Times

Never look a gift horse in the mouth. But on Monday night in the first meeting of the new School District 20 board of education, trustees nearly put their heads in the mouth of the horse as they tried to understand what a $50,000 gift from the province meant. In September the Ministry of Education announced it was giving $50,000 to Rossland Secondary School for playground equipment for Grade 6 and 7 students at the school. As one of their first orders of business in their inaugural meeting, all the new board of trustees had to do was approve a motion to accept the money and they had the gift. However, the feat proved more difficult than was drawn up on paper and, although the motion eventually passed its first two readings, the discussion quickly deteriorated into a territorial debate over school closure. Trustee Mark Wilson thought the money would be wasted if it were spent on RSS and then the institution was slated for closure one year later. He said he did not remember approving the money for Rossland, and added that it cost Glenmerry close to $200,000 to install a playground, more than the amount the province was handing over. “We are looking at changing the configuration within the schools in Rossland. To go ahead and earmark that $50,000 when it might be used in a better place (was unreasonable), he said. “There might be another school in

our district that needs the money more than Rossland, He also wanted to see a plan in place from the RSS Parents Advisory Committee as to where the playground would go, what it would contain and how they proposed to pull it off within that budget.

“To go ahead and earmark that $50,000 when it might be used in a better place (was unreasonable), Trustee Mark Wilson

That comment drew a rise out of trustee Mickey Kinakin — representing Area I and J in the RDCK — wondering why the topic of school closure in Rossland was being brought up. Newly elected chair Darrel Ganzert said the board represented the entire district and, therefore, had to consider the impact of a decision in one area against another. “I was only wondering, Mr. Chair, because it seems we’ve already said we’re going to close the school in Rossland, said Kinakin, referring to an earlier comment by trustee Lorraine Manning.

Trustee Manning said she never inferred RSS would be closing. “Yes, you did,â€? said Kinakin. The chair quickly stepped in. “I don’t want to head back into that area that the last board was in quite so quickly,â€? said the chair. “And I don’t see it quite the way you do, Mr. Kinakin.â€? The chair asked for trustees not to read into the motives around the discussion. Rossland trustee Gordon Smith said the board was sending a bad signal with the debate on the motion. “The signal the board is sending right now is we’re going to close your school, we’re going to re-purpose your money ‌ Let’s be clear about the intent of what this board is signaling to a community,â€? he said. The motion was a procedural bylaw to draw in money gifted and targeted for RSS, trustee Smith said. According to a letter from the Ministry of Education, the board had to adopt a capital project bylaw in the amount of $50,000 before the money would be issued. In issuing the money, the ministry stipulated it was to be targeted for RSS and not any other school, said

SD20 executive assistant Donna Nicoletti. “And, as far as I know, there was no motion to close RSS,â€? trustee Smith said. But trustees Manning and Wilson both felt accepting the money could potentially cost the school board too much in additional installation costs. Superintendent of schools, Greg Luterbach, said accepting the motion did not commit the board to spending $50,000 or more, if need be. “It just says we are accepting this money ‌ and we will receive it,â€? he said. When the announcement was made it was a pleasant surprise to the school district, said trustee Smith, “Now I think the board is getting ahead of itself,â€? he said. “They have been gifted by $50,000 and now they are wondering what they going to buy. I am a little bit puzzled as to why there is so much concern over the table when we have been handed $50,000?â€? A motion to postpone a decision and refer it to the finance and facilities committee was defeated, while a motion to accept the money passed two readings, readying it for approval at the next board meeting.

Rails to deliver a holiday train Starting on the other side of the country, the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train promises a festive spectacle with a big difference. True, the train is a masterpiece of decoration at one of the most widely celebrated times of year in Canada, and true, entertainers like Valdy and Tracey Brown (member of the famous Canadian “Family Brown,”) don’t happen to show up in our town every day, especially sharing the same stage. When the big train rumbles into Castlegar this coming Monday (scheduled for 3:30 p.m.) there will hopefully be a big crowd on hand to greet it. That time of day should be just dark enough to get the most out of the high-end lighting. Folks in Nelson will be next in line to meet up with the train and all who are aboard. Now, about the big difference mentioned above – something that means so much to so many people – enough for more than a couple of good meals in a row. So with all of the various efforts aimed at rounding up donations of non-perishable food for those less fortunate, how about if we all do whatever we can for the cause? The Holiday Train will be just one big, loud, bright seasonal reminder of how good it feels to help out a neighbour. Hope to see you there! We want to hear from you.

Off the Line - Gord Turner

Listening to a book My kids live in an electronic age where a hundred books can be stored on a single thin computer device and carted about quite easily. I tell them that I still like to hold a book in my hands. They indicate that I need to change, and so I’ll probably get a gift of a kindle or its equivalent some time soon. In the meantime, in an effort to get into the modern age, recently I checked out a “listen to” book from the Castlegar Library. I chose one of my favourite mystery authors, Lee Child, whose newest novel The Affair came in a package of 11 discs. I decided I would listen-read this book in my van as I was wandering about our fair city. This was happening mostly prior to the municipal election, so as I was listening, I often stopped to replace one of my candidate-signs. Then I’d get back into the vehicle and continue my listen-read experience as I followed the protagonist Jack Reacher into Northern Mississippi. A couple of times I left the van running, but when I returned, I had missed portions of the narrative. I tried unsuccessfully to go back to where I was when I left the van. a book, this is an easy process as you simply turn back the pages. With a cd, it was more difficult. The vehicle cd player would only take me back to the previous chapter, so I had to listen to part of the narrative again until I found my place. On the second night, I arrived home while listening to Chapter 16, and the story was beginning to get exciting. Reacher was in the small town of Carter Crossing, Mississippi near an army base, and three murders had been committed. In my driveway, I turned off the vehicle motor, but kept the ignition on so I could hear the story. Soon the vehicle was cold as the temperature was below zero on that evening. I sat out there for over an hour getting colder as Reacher got hotter, linking up with the town’s lovely female sheriff. The next day, I accidentally ejected the disc and lost my place. Then I had to start again at the beginning of a chapter and slowly listen-read to find my place. Getting through this cd-novel was taking a long time. Some nights I wanted to listen some more, but I had to go in and get ready for bed. With a

regular book, I would have read some more in bed before falling to sleep. So, I decided to take the cd book into the house and listen to it on our stereo. My wife complained. She didn’t like the voice of the narrator on my cd-novel. And she didn’t want to listen to the brutal depiction of murder while she was knitting a Christmas stocking for our new granddaughter. I turned down the volume and tried to find where I’d left off. After some adjustments, finally I was listening to Chapter 33. And then I fell asleep. I fell asleep three nights in a row, so I gave up on the stereo. I tried listening to this cd-novel on my computer. Again, partway through Chapter 42, I fell asleep. If I put the disc on “pause” I could sometimes resume from where I’d left off, but often if I stopped, I lost my place. Eventually, I took the disks back to the van and continued to listen-read. It took me 10 days to complete the reading-listening. I enjoyed the novel, but I did not enjoy the process. I would have read a “regular” book in a couple of days.

That in itself is surprising as the U.K. sits on the same latitude as northern B.C. However, the U.K. also sits on northern arm of the Gulf Stream which brings warm water to its shores. Our winters are, therefore, less harsh than yours are. This creates a difficulty for our road crews when it snows. The last three years have seen some of the worst snows the U.K. has seen in a number of years, and it almost brought the whole country to a standstill. Heathrow, the country’s biggest airport was closed for 2/3 days! Major freeways and highways were blocked, and we

had a country full of grumbling commuters. Over here you have to deal with more snow and freezing rain than I have experienced in a long time, and yet the roads remain open, and staff can get to workplaces. This is a testament to the hard work and dedication shown by all who work on the road crews. To all those who work on the roads to keep them clear and safe, in and around our area, and in some circumstances risk their lives to do so in order that we can travel safely, a huge thank you and keep safe this year. -Gordon Malcolm Castlegar

Goats in a park, like fish-

...in a barrel This story has come to light just recently. In mid-September a goat was shot by hunters in the campground on the trail to Mt. Gimli. The altitude here is about 2,400 metres (7,900 feet). Here, mountain goats have become accustomed to climbers and hikers. They will approach to within 10 feet and seem very curious. This makes for outstanding photo opportunities. This area is well known for this and the spectacular scenery. A thousand people a year come here. This outrageous incident is cause for concern for human safety, in at least four ways. • The hunters saw the goat in the campground and ordered the people there to get out of the way. The goat was shot and disembowelled

right there in front of them. Did these people feel threatened? I think so. • The blood and guts laying there would soon attract a large predator. Both groups in the campground would have to leave immediately. This would be a dangerous place for hikers and climbers for up to two weeks. • I would question the safety of firing a rifle while standing at the base of a 1,200 foot high rock wall. The concussion could loosen rocks and would surely be frightening for hikers and climbers present. • Most hunters would consider hunting here to be totally un-ethical, as it’s kind of like a petting zoo. We must prevent this from happening again. Please demand that our government close this area to hunting – from the trail head up. -Wayne Reidl, Silverton

Vows of silence taken by many SUBMITTED

This year, on November 30, Stanley Humphries Secondary School and many other schools and individuals around the Kootenays and the world participated in the Vow of Silence – a fundraising and aw are n e s s - r ai s i ng campaign put on by an organization called “Free the Children” where tens of thousands participate by standing in solidarity with those who are silenced by poverty, disease and exploita-

tion. All around the world, people are permanently silenced and denied their basic rights and their voice —this campaign is for these people (visit iamsilent.com or search “vow of silence” to watch some great videos on the issue; Michel Chikwanine’s story is an excellent example of how children are being silenced). Participants took the Vow of Silence to whatever extent they chose, whether it was simply not speaking for 24 hours; not us-

ing Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, or text messaging; or not using hand gestures, note writing or any other form of communication. Many students at Stanley Humphries including Mr. Gregory’s Leadership Class refrained from speaking for at least part or the entire school day while raising some money towards Operation Christmas Child. Losing your voice for any period of time can be a very challenging thing; especially for high school students, so

good job to everyone at SHSS who participated in the vow. I am very proud to say that I was one who lasted 24 hours without any form of communication other than hand gestures and congratulations to everyone else who lasted 24 hours or tried their best to be silenced for the silenced—it was sure difficult, but it was for a great cause! -SHSS student Theresa Thoms – one of several students to take a vow of silence on Nov. 30.

Chances GM reaches out to Rebels CRAIG LINDSAY Castlegar News Reporter

In the Nov. 24 edition of the Castlegar News, I wrote a story about how the Castlegar Rebels had written the city saying they had lost a considerable amount of income after losing their bingo nights with the opening of Chances Gaming Centre. Fortunately, this is one story with a happy development. New Chances General Manager Maz Artang has reached out to the Castlegar

Rebels Hockey Club, offering to meet and discuss possible fundraising events. “I’ve been meeting with the Rebels,” said Artang. “We’re ironing out details we’re trying to create a package together to look at ways that we can essentially raise funds for the Rebels.” Any potential events have to be cleared by the B.C. Lottery Corporation (BCLC), who oversees the gaming centre. “We’re going to sit together and come up with some ideas,” he

said. “We’re also going to try and use our food and beverage side to raise funds as well, maybe have a Rebels’ night, something like that. We’re going to get together with the Rebels, put together a package and submit it to BCLC and see what they say and take it from there.” Artang says he knows the importance of supporting local sports. “That was something I was going to do anyway, coming here. Get in touch with local sports teams and

see what we can do.” Rebel club President Jim Craig said his group is encouraged with the talks so far. “They’ve offered some alternates to us,” he said, “in respect to entering into a cooperative venture around Castlegar Rebel bingo. They’ve pitched other ideas about what we can do as well. We have another meeting scheduled where we are going to pin things down and we’ll take it from there and see how it goes.”

“We learned about municipal finance, insurance, and parliamentary rules. “It was a lot to absorb, said Sue Heaton-Sherstobitoff. “Hopefully, in the next year I’ll begin to understand how civic politics works from the inside. Having run on a platform of working for the people, she got to work early, questioning whether council needed to spend money for an Ainsworth retreat in January. “Hopefully, I can be that voice of reason/ voice for the people, she said. “I think we should be conscientious of where our taxpayers’ money is being spent around the table. I don’t think our taxpayers’ money, if we can help it, should be spent outside of our community. We should be investing in our community. I’m pretty sure we have some quiet places here where we can do strategic thinking.

Winter-Fabulous

Santa Claus and several friends paraded through Castlegar’s downtown on Friday during the 16th annual Winterfest. At the conclusion of the parade, Santa and Mrs. Claus dismounted their ride to help light the Christmas trees at City Hall Spirit Square. Santa then met with many of the boys and girls from Castlegar and the area. The event also featured a sing-along with Elaine Ryder and Ray Yule, carols by the Twin Rivers Chorale Choir, story-telling by Julie Kalesnikoff, and ďŹ re spinning by Heidi Smee and her students.

Some shops may claim to have class and style, but at Ely’s Boutique and Gift Shop, owner and manager Ely Santos has that, and more, in spades. Ely’s Boutique offers bridal gowns, grad dresses and more and Ely is there to help ensure each customer has the exact fit for them. Before starting her boutique, Ely, who came to Canada from the Phillipines in 1966, worked as a cooking teacher. “When I married Mr. Santos, he said ‘You’re not working. You’ll be a stay-athome mom.’” Ely and her husband lived in the Northwest Territories for nine years where he was a geologist. “We moved to Trail and this is where I ended up - in Castlegar,” she said. “I started up a small business on 4th Street.” Soon enough, Ely’s Boutique out-grew the small building and Ely was looking to expand. “I said to my husband, ‘I need a bigger

one’,” said Santos. “He said, ‘which one?’ and I said, ‘The Bank of Commerce building’. He said, ‘what will you do with that big building?’. I said, ‘Just buy it for my anniversary and birthday.’ So I got it.” The Santos’ took over the CIBC building in 1986 and have run Ely’s Boutique out of the key downtown Castlegar corner location ever since. “I started with a small business and it got bigger and bigger,” she said. “I decided to bring in anything I wanted. My speciality is specialty dresses like grad dresses, mother of the grad dresses.” Along with grad dresses, Ely also sells wedding dresses, jewellery, and shoes. She is the exclusive supplier of Tony Bowls dresses in the West Kootenays. Every year I bring in 100 different dresses for grad, she said. She has customers from all over B.C., Alberta, Northwest Territories, and Washington State. Ely’s Boutique is popular because they offer big city apparel with small town per-

Personal service means Ely will make sure there are no duplicate dresses sold for an grad or wedding. “Castlegar is a small community, you cannot sell a lot the same merchandise because it’s a small town,” she said. “When you have a wedding or party the same people are invited so you cannot sell two dresses for one.” Ely got into the busi-

Vancouver and Trail, they eventually settled in Castlegar and were able to purchase a small building and start the business without owing any money. “That is the safest way to start a business - don’t owe money. But not too many people can do it. I’m just glad I have a husband whose nose I can bend left or right,” she laughed. Ely is grateful for her husband’s support, calling him her “Perfect Saint”, which is the basic English translation of his name, Perfecto Santos. For the first three years of business, Ely saved and put that money back into the boutique. “I sacrificed for three years and then poured money back into the business, because my husband bought the groceries put the bread and the butter on the table,” she said. Of course, no business lasts long without good service and a good name. “It takes honesty, she will tell this lady if the dress doesn’t look good,” said Perfecto. “She has that reputation, she doesn’t push the expensive dress on you if it doesn’t look good.”

Into the fifth decade

It’s been 40 years that St. David’s Thrift Store has been in operation and there was a luncheon party on December 2 designed to pay tribute to all whom have volunteered at the shop. The event was held at Castlegar United Church and there must have been some pretty perceptive folks in the kitchen, because, as St. David’s spokesperson Diane Merriman pointed out, 25 were expected but closer to 50 showed up. Regardless of the numbers there was more than enough food and a great time was enjoyed by all. Pictured cutting the birthday cake, above, are charter members Marg Fullerton (L) and Kay Bate. Okanagan/Shuswap Conference DOUG BIRKS DIVISION Castlegar Rebel winger Arthur Andrews, sporting the team’s new home whites, gets ready to make the crossing pass during Friday night’s game against Princeton. Craig Lindsay photo

CRAIG LINDSAY Castlegar News Reporter

The Castlegar Rebels had mixed results this past weekend picking up a win over Princeton and tying Golden, both at home, while displaying their brand new white home uniforms. On Friday night, Castlegar had a strong game from goaltender Jordan Gluck to lead them to a 6-2 win over Princeton. Gluck turned away 29 of 31 Posse shots and picked up the game’s firs star honours. Diego Bartlett opened up the scoring on Friday with a goal at 17:02 of the first period, assisted by Tyler Robinson and Peter Mingus. Princeton, who sits in second place in the Okanagan division, answered

with a power play goal from Eric Schmidt at 12:27. The Rebels then scored five unanswered goals to take a solid 6-1 lead. Scoring for Castlegar were Scott Morisseau with two, Nolan Kinney, Walton, and Mingus. Keenan Fordy of Princeton scored the last goal of the game at 3:53 of the third to make the score 6-2. “We played really well,” said Rebel coach Steve Junker. “We moved the puck very well and our power play was clicking. I thought we had a lot of jump and it showed on the scoreboard.” The following night, Castlegar hosted the Golden Rockets, fourth place in the Eddie Mountain Division, with a chance to win their fifth game in a row.

However, Neither Golden nor Castlegar could generate much offence Saturday night, despite having 35 shots each and an overtime period. The teams skated to a 2-2 tie. Scoring for Castlegar were Scott Morisseau (unassisted) and Diego Bartlett assisted by Tyler Robinson and Erik Alden. “Obviously, missing a couple of key players (Anthony Delong, Brenden Heinrich, and Bryce Eviston) didn’t help,” said Junker. “None-the-less, I thought we came out flat and not very crisp and our play suffered because of that; decisions were off.” The Rebels out-shot Golden 5-2 in the overtime period but were unable to get one past Rocket Continued on P. 27

...netminder Jarrod Schamerhorn, who was named the game’s first star. “I don’t want to take anything away from Golden,” said Junker. “Their goaltender played very well. It was tight right down to the end.” Connor Beauchamp made 30 of 32 saves in between the Castlegar pipes and was named the game’s second star. “I was very pleased with our goaltending on the weekend,” said Junker. “Jordan (Gluck) played terrific on Friday night and Connor held us in there on a number of opportunities against Golden Saturday to preserve the point.” Rebel defenceman Joren Johnson was signed over the weekend by Trail and will join the Smoke Eaters for the remainder of the season. “We’re very happy for him,” said Junker. “He’s going to be a great player. For him to get that opportunity - we’re extremely excited for him.” Johnson scored two goals and five assists along with 14 penalty minutes in 25 games with the Rebels. Castlegar travels to Nelson on Friday to take on their archrivals. The Leafs trail the Rebs by three points in the battle for third place in the Neil Murdoch Division. Saturday, Castlegar hosts Summerland at the Community Complex.
