Trustees ponder reducing their own numbers KIM MAGI Castlegar News Reporter
To endorse or not to endorse was the question the School District 20 (SD20) board of education had to answer regarding a trustee electoral review committee report on Monday night. The committee, made up of former and current school trustees,
SD20 staff and union representatives made a number of recommendations, the most discussed being reducing the number of trustees from nine to seven. “We looked at a lot of data the first two meetings, Kim Morris, current secretary treasurer and committee member said. “We tried to look at ourselves as a unique district with unique needs.
More than 10 years ago, School Districts 9 and 11 amalgamated to form SD20. Nine trustees represent areas in Trail, Castlegar, Rossland and areas in between. A more common number of trustees per district in B.C. is seven. “There’s still a lot of stuff on this board that appears to be two separate school districts fighting amalgamation, trustee Vince Morelli,
who also sat on the committee, told the board. The second recommendation was to elect two trustees to each of two different wards and have three trustees elected at large to cover the rest of the areas, therefore reducing the number of trustees needed from nine to seven.

100 days until the Games ROBSON FLETCHER Castlegar News Editor
The 100-day countdown to the BC Seniors Games in the West Kootenay began with a torch-lighting ceremony in Castlegar on Tuesday night. The event was largely a celebration of all the work that has been done so far in preparing the region to host the major sporting event and a look forward to the opening ceremonies in August, but games president Pat Metge also took the opportunity to put out a call for volunteers. “Even though our board of directors have completed many of the tasks to prepare for the games, we have a busy time before us,” he told the gathering of more than 100 people outside of the Castlegar Complex. “With less than 100 days to go to the opening of the games the major task is to sign up approximately 1,500 volunteers to make the games an event all the West Kootenay can be proud of.” As Metge spoke, a procession of athletes began to march down 6th Avenue, escorted by police vehicles, carrying the Senior Games flame. They made their way to the Castlegar Complex, where they formed a line and passed the hand-held torch from one to another until it finally arrived in the hands of Jack Yolland, who carried the flame up a set of stairs and ignited the

About 1,500 volunteers needed Continued from P. 2
Trail Mayor Dieter Bogs said his city has worked with each of Castlegar and Nelson individually before but this will mark the first major event where all three communities have collaborated so closely. “I think that’s a sign of the future, because no one community can really do this alone any more,” Bogs said. “We’re looking forward to putting on the best games ever, and I know we can do it. We have the people, we have the organization. And let’s find lots of volunteers.” Castlegar Mayor Lawrence Chernoff said the event, which is expected to draw 3,200 athletes from across the province, will bring a major economic boost to all three cities and the communities in between. “I think we’re just about maxed on anything that you want — the rooms, the bed and breakfasts, everything that’s out there,” he said. “Everybody will be busy.”
Nelson city councillor Debra Kozak said the event will also be an opportunity to showcase the region to a wide audience. “I think the spirit within the Kootenay region, within our tri-cities coming together to host these games, is very strong,” she said. “I’m looking forward to seeing these events. I’m looking forward to having these people visit our communities. And, most of all, I’m looking forward to having our three communities to work together and pull this off.” For more information on how to volunteer for the games, visit www.2011bcseniorsgames.org and click on “Volunteer.” You can also contact the volunteer directors, Marion Hunter and Doreen Smecher, through the games office by phone: 250-365-2211. “I’d like to challenge all of you to get active and get involved in the largest sporting event to take place in the West Kootenay,” Metge said.
Serving the Citizens of Castlegar Mayor Lawrence Chernoff takes his turn working the grill at the M&M Meats annual charity barbecue which raises money for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada. This year a total of $1,682 was raised locally and the nationwide total reached $1.5 million. Kim Magi photo

Library provides ‘one more choice’ with new e-readers
Kootenay
KIM MAGI Castlegar News Reporter
Keeping up with technology isn’t a problem for the Castlegar and District Public Library as they release their first set of e-readers to the public next week. The most common e-reader is the Amazon Kindle — a device where you can download and read entire books — but there are dozens to choose from. While the library does have one Kindle, for now they’ll be circulating six Kobo e-readers (which is Indigo Books’ version). “Right now, there are 100 ebook compatible titles,” library director Sandra Smith said. Those titles include popular novels like The Birth House by Ami McKay as well as nonfiction, like Canada and Other Matters of Opinion by Rex Murphy. The titles are rotated and more are added constantly. Smith said although some patrons have chosen books over the e-readers, she thinks it’s good to provide the option. “We’ve always been about choice,” she said. “This is just one more choice.” Smith said the popular feedback she’s received about the e-readers are that they’re portable, easy to carry, lightweight, easy to read and clear. “I think libraries will continue to go this way in the future,” she said. “It’s just one more way to get the story.” Once you check out the Kobo, you take it home and use your own computer to download book titles. All you need is your library card, but you can only download five

titles at a time. The battery life lasts about 10 hours and you plug it back into your computer to charge it. The e-readers can be checked out for three weeks and they’re $200 to replace if lost. “I don’t think people will lose it,” Smith said. “I think they’ll be so keen to have it.” Smith recommends people trying the e-reader with the library to give it a chance. “Some people don’t know if they want to buy one, so you can come try it out with us.” If you’d like to listen to your books instead, the library also offers downloadable books to put on your iPod or other mp3 player. All you have to do is click the link on the library’s home
page and enter your library card number. “It’s just one more way to get the story,” she said. A new language program, Rocket Languages for Libraries, is currently on a threemonth trial with the library as well. “You can go right there and up comes Greek, Japanese, French,” Smith said. The e-readers will be available next week, but the audio books and language programs are available now on the library’s website at castlegar. bclibrary.ca. A reminder, too, that the library will be closed this Thursday, Friday and Saturday while staff attends the Kootenay Library Conference.
Castlegar man arrested in Nelson after police find stolen goods in his vehicle
A 37-year-old Castlegar man is facing a shoplifting charge after being confronted at a Nelson business and running away. Police say store staff followed the suspect and called police, directing them to the area around Cottonwood Falls. They then spotted him heading back toward their business. Officers arrived and arrested him, and found his vehicle in the parking lot. A search turned up over $600 worth of goods the man allegedly stole from the store. The man faces charges of theft, possession of
stolen property, and escaping custody. Acting Sgt. Paul Burkart says police are commending the staff on how they dealt with the suspect and how they responded after he had fled. “After the initial contact where the offender was confronted, staff kept their distance and did not try to apprehend him, but instead provided police with valuable information regarding his location and description,” he says. /Nelson Star

Keep the torch of co-operation going It’s been great to see the communities of the West Kootenay coming together in preparation for the 2011 BC Seniors Games over these past many months, and it was wonderful to see that sense of collaboration continue as organizers gathered for a torch-lighting ceremony in Castlegar on Tuesday night. The event marked the official, 100-day countdown to the beginning of the games, which are expected to bring 3,200 senior athletes from around the province to the West Kootenay. The games venues, themselves, are located in Nelson, Castlegar and Trail but you can bet the impact of this massive influx of people will be felt up in Rossland, over in Grand Forks and throughout all the smaller communities in between. The co-operation between the three host cities has been refreshing, as municipal leaders put aside any past differences or disagreements between them and worked together for the betterment of what they’ve taken to calling the whole “tri-cities” area. We think Trail Mayor Dieter Bogs put it well when he spoke of this inter-municipal collaboration. “I think that’s a sign of the future, because no one community can really do this alone any more,” Bogs said. We hope to see more co-operation between this region’s communities in the future. The collection of small cities up and down the river valleys and mountainsides of the West Kootenay is much stronger united than it is divided. “I think the spirit within the Kootenay region, within our tri-cities coming together to host these games, is very strong,” Nelson city councillor Debra Kozak said on Tuesday. We agree, and we hope it stays that way well after the closing ceremonies. We want to hear from you.

Spots In Time - Gord Turner
A man of tact and sensibility I don’t know if the decision to hire Selkirk College’s vice-president Angus Graeme as its new president met with unanimous support by the hiring committee and the college board. But I do know the choice of Angus Graeme to lead the college was viewed favourably by nearly everyone working within the college. What is it about this man that strikes such a positive chord among Selkirk staff? To begin with, he’s a decent person. He treats everyone with respect no matter where one fits in the work hierarchy within Selkirk College. And he’s approachable, rarely having a closed office door while he was vicepresident. While everyone I’ve spoken to feels he may have a lot to learn about the provincial college scene and the political system, they firmly believe he will not take long to learn those aspects. They will accept this bit of inexperience because the human side of the man is attractive to all of us here in the West Kootenay. I suspect that Angus learned a lot while he was in the shadow of former president Marilyn Luscombe. Moreover, his work as department head, school chair, dean of instruction, vice-president academic, and interim president clearly establish his leaderTheresa Hodge Office Manager

ship background. His masters degree in leadership from Royal Roads University merely solidifies these credentials. His speech at the recent college graduation indicated a thoughtful man who was comfortable in his new role and ready to move forward. I met Angus Graeme shortly after he arrived at Selkirk to teach in the renewable resources department. In fact, he and I joined our classes during several winter terms for presentations. He had a course in forest issues, and the students had to present those issues from a variety of perspectives. I had a technical communications course which required presentations. It was fun to work with him in the classroom. He dealt with management of forests and the environment in a serious yet infectious way. When students presented on various issues, he knew all the statutes that governed the province. And he imparted his knowledge competently and accurately. Every student in those classes would have eaten out of his hand if he’d asked them to. They respected him completely, and when humorous items were introduced, he laughed along with them. In fact, when someone did especially well, he handed out chocolate bars. But he was always in charge. Recently, I’ve been at receptions where he has spoken, and he usually

adds a verse or two of poetry into his talk. As an English professor, I can’t help but cheer at these additions of Shakespeare or Tennyson to his serious talk. He has always been the first person to buy Rotary roses from me each autumn as I make my way through the college doing my bit for Rotary causes. In fact, so high is my esteem of the man that I let him “owe” for the roses until he has money. He’s also quite careful about giving out the roses, always choosing the best dozen for his lovely wife, the artist Alison, and then giving the slightly-lesser dozen to his secretary. Truly, a man of tact and sensibility. I probably will have to be careful in future that I don’t address him as “wee Angus” publicly, but I’m not afraid that the relationship I’ve had with him over the years will change much. He seems to know how to separate governing from relating to people openly as he has always done. For several years now, our new president Angus Graeme, dressed in kilt and Scottish gear, has been playing the bagpipes and leading the college students into their graduation ceremonies. Now that he is Selkirk’s president, we know that his sense of tradition and his ability to lead will continue to impress the communities he serves.

Board agrees to receive but not endorse the recommendations Continued from P. 1
Some trustees were apprehensive about endorsing the report before it went for public consultation, which frustrated Morelli. “You guys have appointed a committee, we’ve done the work for you; please have the courtesy to endorse the work,” he said. But trustee Bev Maloff said it should be up to the public which way the board goes. Trustee Mickey Kinakin agreed. “You can’t have it both ways,” he said, adding the board can’t put the report ‘”in your back pocket” while going to the public for consultation. “We’ve been accused of endorsing [previous reports] when we haven’t so why don’t we?” Morelli asked. “Why go to the public if we’ve already endorsed it?” Maloff rebutted, receiving the an-
swer from board chair Gordon Smith that it’s legislatively required to go to the public. Smith went on to say that he believed if the board endorsed the report, the public would likely believe the board already has an agenda. “I don’t remember seeing this argument when an outside committee brought you guys your raises,” Morelli said. “Not accepting the committee’s recommendation I think is a disgrace.” “Just because a committee makes a report doesn’t mean the board accepts it,” Kinakin said. After a long discussion, the board was split in their vote to endorse the report, and instead voted to receive the report and go ahead with public consultation. The report is available on the SD20 website for information: www.sd20.bc.ca.

Dozens of preschoolers visited Kinnaird Elementary on Tuesday to see what kindergarten would be like as a part of the “Ready, Set, Learn” program. The purpose of the visit is to connect the kids within the school system and to other community agencies that provide important information and resources prior to starting school. “They can go when they’re three and four,” Bev George, coordinator for Blueberry Creek Community School said. Each event features information on public health, dental care, literacy activities, art, playtime and healthy snacks. Speech therapists and physiotherapists are also on hand if the child will need it. “For example, some of our preschoolers are in speech therapy and they’ll meet their new speech therapist,”

Best sale yet, says Garden Club
KIM MAGI
Castlegar News Reporter
The Castlegar Garden Club is calling last weekend’s plant sale their most successful ever, thanks to the generosity of members who provided the plants and the shoppers who cleaned the sale out. Many shoppers were lined up before the sale opened at 9 a.m., club president Dorothy Kaytor said. The annual event has taken place at the Castlegar Station Museum for the last 15 years, at least. “This is such a great spot because it works rain or shine,” Kaytor said, which was lucky because it was raining for a
good portion of the day. Kaytor said local gardeners are attracted to the yearly sale because they know the products their selling. “We’ve got seasoned gardeners that can give advice and can refer to books,” she said. To make the shopping experience easier, the club separated the plants into sections such as sun, shade, annual and perennial for the new gardener. “The attraction is that people know they’re getting plants that grow local and have come from local gardens so they’re healthy,” she said. With the club’s largest fundraiser now out of the way, they’re focusing on this Saturday’s Garden and Nature Fest.
The second annual event is a partnership with the club and Communities in Bloom and will be located at the Millennium Walkway and Twin Rivers Park. The Castlegar Garden Club will have more plants for sale, and other vendors will provide shrubs, trees, mosaics, metal art, herbs and tinctures. There are 40 vendors in total. New this year is the addition of food vendors and entertainment. The Garden and Nature Fest runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, email castlegargardenfest@ shaw.ca or call 250-399-4439.

Peace Cafe to discuss Gaza blockade KIM MAGI Castlegar News Reporter
Why the Israeli and Egyptian blockade of Gaza matters to Canadians will be the topic of discussion at Thursday night’s Peace Café. Kevin Neish, who was on the Mavi Marmara ship last May when, according to UN reports, nine Turkish activists were killed while trying to bring supplies to Gaza. Neish, who is planning to board a Canadian ship making the same trip again next month, will be the guest speaker. “The Canadian Boat to Gaza is based on breaking what is called ‘the blockage to Gaza,’” Randy Janzen, chair of the Mir Centre for Peace said. He explained that the incoming and outgoing of boats to Gaza is severely restricted, to the point where the UN and the Red Cross have called it a human rights issue. “The coastline of Gaza is the only coastline in the Mediterranean where you cannot land because Israeli defence forces will not let you land,” he said. “The once flourishing fishing industry in Gaza is now decimated because the fisherman can’t leave.” Janzen compared Gaza to a jail as there is no economic viability. “Israel has maintained this blockade as a means to control the people of Gaza and Egypt has gone along with this,” he added.
A huge victory was won when Egypt announced it would open its border, Janzen said, but every other entry point is still controlled by Israelis. No boats have been able to get through since the Mavi Marmara tried last May, but Janzen said ships continue to try because it’s a political and human rights effort. “Next month, there’s going to be up to five to 10 boats from around the world bringing citizens from many different continents,” Janzen said. Countries confirmed to be involved are France, the USA, UK, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Greece and Turkey. Janzen said Neish will be speaking at the Peace Café because they’re trying to bring up current issues and give people a platform to ask questions. “He’s going to talk about his experience on the boat last May and he’s going to talk about, most importantly, why this is important to Canadians,” he said. “People ask, ‘there’s so much going on in the world, why this?’” It’s a contentious issue, Janzen said. He invites people to attend if they have questions, want to know more information or just want to voice their opinion. The Peace Café takes place on Thursday night at 7 p.m. in the Mir Centre for Peace at Selkirk College. Admission is by donation and refreshments will be served. BC Southern Interior Riding

Sometimes, you are required to split a tablet in half to take the right dose. There are many ways to do this but the best way is to use a “pill splitter”. These are available in all pharmacies. Some tablets are scored so they can be split by pushing on each end at the same time. This works too. But avoid using knives or scissors. These don’t do a good job and you could cut yourself ion the process. Up to 1 in 100 people have celiac disease, a digestive disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. Celiac patients cannot tolerate any gluten in their food and medicines. As pharmacists, we have access to the total list of ingredients in all medications and can tell you if there is gluten in them or not. Let us help.
If you have a serious allergy to wasps, bees or even certain food items, it’s important to have an EpiPen on hand that is in date. A recent study of over 100 people with severe allergies, found that only 55% actually carried the EpiPen with them. Ensure yours is in date and with you. It can save your life.

May is Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness Month. MS received a lot of press in 2010 with the introduction of the controversial “liberation” treatment introduced by a doctor in Italy. Last year also saw the release in the U.S. of the first oral drug for MS (fingolimod). This would be much more convenient than injectable therapies and it is hoped to be OK’d in Canada this year.

A Black Press publication has taken gold at the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspapers Association’s (BCYCNA) 2011 Ma Murray Community Newspaper Awards. Route 3 magazine beat out Sunshine Coast Life and Gulf Islander 2010 Visitors’ Guide in the special publications award under 25,000 (circulation) category, with judges lauding the magazine’s layout, use of photos and consistent graphical elements amongst other things. They also said Route 3 had a wide variety of locally focused articles that were written well and that “hit the mark in terms of balance, interest and attractiveness to both reader and advertiser. “I’m thrilled, says the magazine’s account manager Chris Hammett, who attended the April 30 awards ceremony on behalf of Route 3. “It was hard work and something you strive for and you work towards and to get that recognition from your peers and the community, that our product stands out, is really everything anybody in the business could ever hope for. Shelley Ackerman, Route 3’s editor and art director, and Route 3 Publisher Chuck Bennett echo Hammett’s sentiments. “I’m very pleased that Route 3 has been recognized for its quality. I think we put out a really great little magazine here, and it’s wonderful to see that those in the know think so too, Ackerman

says. “Chris and Shelley should both be very proud of this award, says Bennett. “They have worked very hard and very diligently to make Route 3 the wonderful magazine that it is. We are proud of them, and this award, and I just personally want to congratulate them on what is very deserving recognition. As Hammett and Ackerman explain, the quarterly regional lifestyle magazine depicts life in the West Kootenay and Boundary. “Each issue is different, it focuses on different people, arts, a different home and much more, Hammett says. “It doesn’t expire because you learn something new
every time you read it and so the product has turned out to be a great crossover product. It was intended for the locals in the region and we found that it’s become a good crossover vehicle with people travelling through the region wanting to pick them up and learn about our market and area. “There is no shortage of excellent stories in this region — there are so many people doing really cool things, explains Ackerman. “For each issue, the stories are written by several different writers and the photos taken by several different photographers. The Route 3 staff would like to thank the community for standing behind the pub-
lication and the enormous support it has given the publication since its inception — they also thank the contributors and photographers because they played a part in the success as well. Approximately 50 per cent of Route 3 editions are distributed through the Grand Forks Gazette, Trail Daily Times, Nelson Star and Castlegar News, with the balance available at street level throughout the West Kootenay/Boundary. The awards are named after Margaret “Ma Murray, the province’s first female newspaper publisher, and are awarded for excellence in all aspects of the newspaper industry.

The 2011 Census will paint a statistical portrait of the nation. Census information is important for all communities and is vital for planning services, such as schools, daycares, police and fire protection. Respondents can fill in the census questionnaire online by using a secure access code. It’s easy and secure. Or, they can complete a paper questionnaire. Information on how to complete the census, including the secure access code, can be found in the yellow census package received by each household or by calling the Census Help Line at 1-877-777-2011. TTY users may call 1-866-
753-7083. The 2011 Census consists of ten questions covering basic demographic characteristics, including age, sex, marital and common-law status, household relationships and language. There is also a question asking for the consent of respondents to release their personal census information to Library and Archives Canada after 92 years. Information provided on census questionnaires is kept strictly confidential. Statistics Canada thanks everyone who has already completed the census.

The art pieces from last year’s SculptureWalk (except those that were purchased to remain on public display) have now been removed and organizers are preparing to put up new sculptures for the 2011/12 season. Pat Field of the SculptureWalk board wanted to keep the exact date of the new installations a secret to maintain an element of surprise, but he said you can expect to see them appear in late May. Plenty of winners at Diamond Dinner But only one guest could walk away with the top prize ... KIM MAGI Castlegar News Reporter
Diamonds were a girl’s best friend at the 10th annual Diamond Dinner in Castlegar last weekend. Well, they were for grand-prize winner Andrea James, anyway. James walked away with the coveted prize, valued at over $5,000. A look of shock was very clear on her face as her key opened the box holding the diamond. Through a live auction, silent auction and raffles, each of the 275 guests had an opportunity to take home items while raising money for the Castlegar Rotary Club. After dinner (served by the male Rotarians), guests were entertained with a fashion show by West’s and Fashion Foundations, and the everpopular “Diamonds in the Rough” dancers — again, all male Rotarians. The event is the club’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and the money raised will go toward the green gym to be built along the Millennium Walkway in Castlegar, as well as other local and international projects. This year’s dinner sold out in three days. To be put on the ticket list for next year, contact Sandy Groutage at 365-8409.

Kinnaird Elementary joins the Stream of Dreams KIM MAGI Castlegar News Reporter
The grounds at Kinnaird Elementary got a whole lot brighter last week with the installation of 350 colourful fish on the fence around the school. Known as the Stream of Dreams Program, Kinnaird is the first school in Castlegar to participate, but not the first in the West Kootenay, according to vice-principal Patrick Kinghorn. “I saw them at other schools,” Kinghorn said, naming Nelson elementary schools as an example. He partnered with community schools coordinator Bev George who secured funding for Kinnaird and the Twin Rivers 360 program. “It’s a watershed awareness program,” Monica Nissen of the Nelson Stream of Dreams Murals Society said. “Every kid has heard the story on how the first Stream of Dreams began.” The program started in Burnaby in 2000 and
has since expanded to include schools across the province. Each student at Kinnaird learned where their water comes from, what not to put down the drain, how storm drains work and what changes in behaviour we can all make to protect water and fish habitat. Nissen said 70,000 people across B.C. have painted fish as part of the program. Once funding was secured, students in Stanley Humphries Secondary School’s Carpentry & Joinery 12 class cut out all the fish out of wood to be painted. Kinghorn said every student in the school painted one, as well as some teachers and parents. Parents and teachers helped install the fish on the school’s fence on Wednesday last week. “It’s really nice to do this as a community art piece,” Nissen said. “We would like to encourage everybody to think about what goes down the drain.”

Business New series of networking events for women in business kicks off today

15 Weeks
Until the Kootenays hosts the B.C. Senior Games!
KIM MAGI Castlegar News Reporter
When Rebecca Vassilakakis moved to the West Kootenay in October, she wanted to join a women’s networking group. The problem was there weren’t any. Arriving from the Okanagan, where Vassilakakis had no problem connecting with other women in business, she found it was more difficult in her new home of Castlegar. She began working at Krueckl Financial Services in December, but was still having trouble meeting other business women. So she decided there was nothing left to do but organize a group herself. Approaching Pam McLeod, the executive director of the Castlegar and District Chamber of Commerce, Vassilakakis learned of other women in the area who were looking for the same thing. Willow Enewold of Pinnacle Projects, Nancy Tropman of Centum Mortgage and property manager Barb MacKay teamed up with Vassilakakis and McLeod to launch the first West Kootenay Women in Business networking and luncheon event. “There’s a very strong network across the province and across Canada for events like this, McLeod said after emailing other chambers of commerce to get ideas. “The group already had some specific ideas, McLeod explained, including having a social networking component and an economic development component. “To start we’re focusing more on the networking, Vassilakakis said. The main idea behind the group, she said, is women supporting women in business. “But we are looking for people that want to be involved with business, she added. Women invited are those who work in business, own a business or want to start a business. The first event is set to take place at the Fireside Inn in Castlegar on May 12. Lunch is $15 which includes tax and tip. There is no pre-registration required. Moving forward, the group plans to hold the networking luncheons on the second Tuesday of the month from 11:30

When looking to expand into the Kootenays, City Furniture president Ray Kandola said Castlegar was the obvious choice. “We felt Castlegar is more central to all the towns,” he said. “We will draw customers from other small centres.” Taking up business in small towns throughout B.C. and Alberta has been part of the City Furniture business model all along, starting with their first store in Dawson Creek in 1976. “We are in Prince Rupert all the way to Merritt,” Kandola said. Castlegar’s City Furniture is their 22nd store. The store, which opened two weeks ago, is nearly complete from a construction standpoint. “Of course with the weather, landscaping has to wait,” Kandola said. He describes the store’s products as mid to highrange. “It’s very every-day, really Canadian household, B.C. household,” he said. “It’s meat-and-potatoes in terms of that.”
File photo
City Furniture chose Castlegar for its new store largely due to the city’s central location.
Kandola said he considers competition as friends, but believes different people will shop at City Furniture than those who would shop at other local furniture stores. “Plus we carry complete high-end appliances and electronics,” he said. “We have everything for the household as well.” A family-owned business, Kandola has complete faith in the way each store is run. “The people that run all of them, pretty well, are partners or owners,” he said. “They have full authority to deal with any situation that may arise they don’t have to
call anybody first.” To open Castlegar’s store, they brought in City Furniture veterans to make sure everything would run smoothly. “Everybody we bring in the business is basically trained in our system before they go and they know what they’re doing,” he said. The size of the new building, located near the Highway 3 overpass, is massive at 16,000 sq. ft. on the main floor and an additional 6,000 feet on the mezzanine, but Kandola said some of their other stores are much bigger, such as Kamloops which
is close to 50,000 feet. “We’re looking at the future,” he said. “We are there for the long haul. We want to make sure in five years and in 10 years from today we don’t say, ‘oh my gosh, I wish we had a bigger store.’” Kandola said he’s impressed with Kootenay residents so far and how happy they’ve been to see the products. “I have opened many stores over the years … I would say Castlegar is pretty well number one in terms of quality of the people that I saw come into the door [on opening day.]”

Complex packed for derby double header KIM MAGI Castlegar News Reporter
Nearly 1,200 fans packed the Castlegar Complex on Friday night to cheer on their favourite teams in the West Kootenay Women’s Roller Derby League’s first doubleheader. Castlegar’s Dam City Rollers played their first game ever against the seasoned Babes of Brutality from Salmo. The Babes proved to be too much for the Rollers, and Castlegar was defeated 218-61. “The Dam City Rollers are happy with how we played,” Kitty Karnage said after the bout. “The outcome of the game is what it is.” Nelson’s Killjoys took on Ross-
land’s Gnarlie’s Angels afterward, in a physical game that saw medical attendants descend upon the track more than once. In the Killjoys’ second game ever, the Angels won 273-73. Karnage said the teams were really pumped from all the fans that came out to support them. On May 28, the Rollers will take on the Killjoys in what is expected to be a much closer match. “I think we’ll definitely see a more even score,” Karnage said. “We’re both on the same level so I think it will be a closer game and it’ll be just as exciting.” That same night, Gnarlie’s Angels will take on Nelson’s other team, the Lumber Jackies. Both games will be at the Nelson Community Complex.

Short spring soccer season well underway With try-outs only in April, play-downs begin next month KIM MAGI Castlegar News Reporter
Tournament play is underway for Kootenay South select players in preparation for playdowns next month. The season goes by quickly for the young soccer players, who only tried out for the teams in mid-April. Brett Pedersen, select program co-ordinator for Kootenay South, said each team had about 20 to 25 kids trying out with 16 to 18 making the cut. Kootenay South covers a wide area, with teams made up of players from Salmo, Fruitvale, Trail, Warfield, Rossland, Castlegar and areas in between. The teams are strong in the league for younger kids, but boys under 16-18 have been combined with Nelson and there isn’t a girls’ under-18 team this year. “The high school soccer runs at the same time so once the kids hit about age 16 they tend to drop off,” Pedersen said. In June, the teams will play against Nelson, Creston, Kootenay East and Columbia Valley in hopes of qualifying for the provincial tournament. “Basically, the goal is to qualify for the provincials in July,” he said. Until then, they’ll continue to practice, play practice games against one another and participate in tournaments. This weekend many of the teams will go to Coeur D’Alene in Idaho, but those that don’t will have a chance to participate in tournaments in Kamloops, Cranbrook, Kelowna, Creston, and Kalispell. “After provincials most of the teams will go to a summer tournament,” Pedersen said, “but the main focus is between now and the provincials.”

Mario Furlan
In Memoriam
In Loving Memory Walter Popoff
We are saddened to announce the passing of Mario Furlan on Friday May 6th, 2011 after a lengthy illness and a short stay at Talarico Place, Castlegar, BC. Mario was born December 16, 1925 in Azzano Decimo, Province Pordenone, Italy and arrived in Canada on February 19, 1952 with his first home being in North Forks, BC. After a short stint with the CPR, Mario moved to Castlegar in 1953 when he started work at Waldie & Sons Sawmill, then Celgar Sawmill and retiring after 34 years of service in 1987. Mario lived a simple and contented life tending to his home and garden, making wine, an avid hockey fan, raising two sons and visiting with his many friends and relatives. Mario is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lina, sons Claudio (Ronda) Furlan of Vernon, BC, and Fabio (Cheryl) Furlan of Laguna Niguel, California, granddaughters Andree Furlan and Sonja (Dan) Caryk, sisters Maria (Enrico) Franzon of Calgary, AB, Luigia (Rino [deceased]) Zilli of Cuzano, Italy, brothers Sylvio (Nives) Furlan of Castlegar, BC and Valentino (Dianna) Furlan of Calgary, AB along with many nephews and nieces and a close group of friends. Mario is predeceased by brother-in-law and sister-in-law Luigi and Concietta Borean of Hamilton, ON. Even though Mario was not born and raised in Canada, he adopted this great country as if he were. He passionately enjoyed our great sport of hockey and lived and breathed the game like a true Canadian. Mario grew up in a farming community and he transferred these early year skills to his home on 10th Avenue. Friends and relatives came from far and near to enjoy the many fruits and vegetables that his small plot of land would grow. His greatest joy from this small plot of land was growing grapes which were made into wine that he proudly served to his family and friends. Mario was a long time member of the Cristoforo Colombo Lodge and could be seen at many Lodge events in Trail socializing with his lodge co-members. A kind and gentle man, Mario will be sadly missed and fondly remembered. A celebration of life and funeral services will be held on Thursday May 12, 2011 at St. Rita’s Catholic Church, Castlegar, BC at 10:30 AM with Father Clarke Presiding. Cremation in care of Castlegar Funeral Chapel with entombment in the Nose Creek Valley Mausoleum in Calgary, AB. Mario’s family extends gratitude to Dr. Merritt, the Doctors, Nurses and Caregivers in Castlegar, Trail, and Kelowna and friends and relatives that have helped his family through his illness. In lieu of flowers and other condolences, Mario’s family urges donations in Mario’s name to either the Kelowna Cancer Lodge c/o the Canadian Cancer Society, BC Yukon Division, Attn: Donor Services, 565 West 10th Ave, Vancouver, BC, V5Z 4J4, www.cancer.ca or Talarico Place c/o 709 10th Street, Castlegar, BC, VIN 2H7, www.castlegarhospitalfoundation.org.

HARMSTON, Doris Thelma August 25, 1921 - December 29, 2010 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, at the Cowichan District Hospital, Duncan, BC. Predeceased by her husband Leonard in 1997, her mother and father, Fred and Alice Henry and her two sisters and three brothers in England. Doris is survived by: five children: Janet, Vancouver Island; Shelia (Cecil), Calgary; Richard (Susan), Pitt Meadows; Susan (Clifford), Revelstoke; Denise, Calgary; 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; one sister Ruby and one brother John in England and many nephews and nieces in England and BC. Doris was born in Wycombe, Marlow, England on August 25, 1921. Doris was a veteran and also a war bride. She met and married her husband Leonard in 1941 in Maidenhead, Berkshire, England. Doris immigrated to Canada in 1945 with her daughter Janet to wait for the return of Leonard from the war. Leonard went to work at Cominco in Trail, BC and started building their home in Castlegar in 1946, where they lived and raised their family till their retirement years and where Doris still lived till her passing. Doris was a devoted homemaker, wife and mother enjoying gardening, playing golf with her husband Leonard, knitting, reading and traveling to their children’s homes and visiting her family in England during their holidays. Doris was a widow for 13 years spending her winters with her children and their families and her spring and summers at home in Castlegar where Sharon and Bob Taylor kept a watchful eye over her. We can’t thank them enough for their kind support through these years and we would like to thank everyone for all the cards and phone calls too. We will miss her very much. Especially her English character, her English habits and her English cooking. ‘WE WILL LOVE HER FOREVER AND WE WILL REMEMBER THE GOOD TIMES.’
