Castlemaine State Festival has taken every measure possible to create a safe environment for all attendees. The duration of the Festival has increased from 10 days to 17 days in order to comply with strict cleaning measures between events, and reduced the amount of events per day in order to do so. Castlemaine State Festival in collaboration with Arena Theatre Company presents
OPENING NIGHT
AJAK KWAI & RIEL DË NYIËR IN THIS invigorating opening night world premiere, award-winning singer-songwriter and activist Ajak Kwai will bid you dance the Festival into life with her funky afro-beats and extraordinary voice. Flitting between Arabic, Sudanese and English, Kwai sings of her exile from South Sudan as a refugee. After a Dja Dja Wurrung Welcome to Country, this concert will draw you into a full 17 days of myriad creative experiences. Kwai will be welcomed to the stage by Riel Dë Nyiër by (meaning strong love), a musical arrangement featuring live acapella chants matched with dramatic percussion, and original song compositions sung in English and Dinka by the Bendigo South Sudanese Women’s Ensemble. The work, a celebration of South Sudanese culture in Central Victoria intertwines stories and original songs of the civil war in South Sudan with personal accounts of each of the performers unique journey in now calling Australia home. Ranging between 14 and 62 in age, these women are from the Dinka (Bor), Twic Mayaardit and Bahr El Ghazal tribes, the very union of which is progressive in spirit. Riel Dë Nyiër by is born of a spectacular collaboration with Arena Theatre Company, led by local composer Eliza Hull.

WELCOME
Well, here we go! The 2021 Castlemaine State Festival is upon us. I am writing this message in December 2020 and much uncertainty remains before us in delivering this magnificent Festival.
If there was ever a time to get out and explore the rich offerings of our creative state it is now – and there’s no better excuse to hit the road than the Castlemaine State Festival.
The Castlemaine State Festival is a significant event on our shire’s calendar and in 2021, will play an important role in bringing our community and visitors safely back together, after a difficult year.
What you can be assured by is that we have designed a Festival that is ready to engage with the harsh winds of change due to the tireless work of an amazing team here at CSF HQ. We have added six days to the length of the event so each day of the Festival you will be able to discover a Festival and a program of artists safely and at your own pace.
One of our oldest and most dynamic arts festivals, Castlemaine State Festival is a must-do event of Victoria’s cultural calendar, whether you’re a local or an arts curious visitor. The 2021 festival will bring us together in new ways in a celebration of resilience, renewal and reconnection.
So come March - a beautiful time of the year in Castlemaine - it will be a wonderful opportunity for us to celebrate. With outdoor events showcasing more local artists than previous festivals, make sure you get the most out of your visit by buying local and treating yourself to our region’s great food, produce and wine.
We also hope to give you time to explore our wonderful region as you hop from experience to experience. Themes of renewal are abounded as we at CSF always like to pose the question of “what next?” in all we do. With one eye on the horizon you will also engage with ancient wisdom, the collective conscious, and delights that serve to heal and move. While this edition will be complemented by an enlarged digital access offering, we are as always in the business of presence, of being here. In which case, you better get here soon as we are ready and waiting. See you at the Festival.
GLYN ROBERTS FESTIVAL DIRECTOR
The Victorian Government is a proud and longstanding partner of the festival. In addition to supporting the 2021 event, we are investing in CSF’s vision for a year-round regional creative hub at the Castlemaine Goods Shed. Goods Shed Arts will be one of the many indoor, outdoor and virtual spaces that will come alive with art, performance and creativity during the upcoming festival. Congratulations to the Castlemaine State Festival team who, amidst the challenges and uncertainty of the last year, have planned an extra special program full of the creative experiences we’ve missed and plenty we couldn’t have imagined. DANNY PEARSON MP MINISTER FOR CREATIVE INDUSTRIES
We congratulate everyone involved in contributing to the strength of this successful event and take great pleasure in welcoming you to our region.
We have presented this wonderful Festival 16 times now, through thick and thin. This 17th Festival will once again be a starburst of fun and entertainment, but we have never before been so challenged by the uncertainty that the pandemic has brought with it. Thanks to our brilliant team, we are going to deliver a fabulous and safe program with a slightly different look and feel. You as supporters and visitors to the Festival are at the heart of it all - I encourage you to be part of the ‘21 Castlemaine State Festival and join us in sharing the joy and celebration that we all deserve.

JESS HITCHCOCK has one of those voices – capable of both exquisite beauty and a worldly pain – that makes her shows the kind you’ll talk about for years to come. While she’s only released a debut LP so far, Bloodline, she’s an artist to whom we’re sure the term “national treasure” will soon be applied. As Paul Kelly put it, having dueted with Hitchcock, “When you sing with Jess, you have to step up to the plate.” Her compositions blend country, pop and a South Pacific tinge – thanks to her ukulele and lilting vocals.

IT’S THE DREAM pairing, and if they hadn’t thought of it, we would have suggested it. Josh Teskey, of the ARIA Award-winning Teskey Brothers, and Ash Grunwald – a stalwart of Australia’s roots scene – paired up and recorded the stripped-back album Push the Blues Away in November 2020. For the first time, they are now playing a small string of shows, to bring that magic to life. It goes without saying that these two are blues aficionados, able to explore a rich sonic palette of eras and influences within their songs.

LIOR IS a musical chameleon, but his one constant is fearlessness. Since his indie beginnings in the early noughties, he’s collaborated with orchestras, visual artists and theatre productions. He is one of Australia’s most successful and respected singer/songwriters and is a multi-award winner. This stripped-back intimate concert will see him perform songs drawn from his vast back catalogue of recordings. Audiences will have the rare opportunity to hear his astounding voice singing his songs as they were originally created, with guitar and voice. We anticipate the sort of set that invites an awed hush before each applause.

MARALA BINAURAL
ARCHIE ROACH TELL ME WHY NOT MANY have lived as many lives - from stolen child, teenage alcoholic, seeker, lover, father, musical and lyrical genius, to social advocate and First Nations leader - but it took almost a lifetime to find who he really was. He is Archie Roach. Roach voices the joy, pain and hope he found on his path through these songs to become the legendary singer, songwriter and storyteller that he is today - beloved and respected by fans worldwide.
ONCE YOU pull on your headphones you’ll hear the Marala Trio as intimately as though they were in the same room, singing to you alone. Instead, Selma Bruna, Clara Fiol and Sandra Monfort, will be gathered around a binaural microphone in Spain, televised on a big screen all the way to Castlemaine. The binaural microphone captures every whisper and breath in 360-degree sound. The effect of their combined voices, while inspired by Catalan folk, is part choral, part meditation – and it’s an effect that has moved audience members to tears.

YOU COULD say that folk music was the Rigby sisters’ birthright. Their parents are professional musicians, they were frequenting side-of-stage at folk festivals before they can even remember, and they’d be encouraged to sing folk songs to stop them arguing in the car. Both sisters sing, with Maggie taking on banjo and guitar, and Elsie on fiddle and violin. Now three albums old, they’ll be drawing from their extensive repertoire of intimate and conversational songs.

LIZ STRINGER is what you’d call a ‘lifer’. Since leaving home in Melbourne at sixteen and starting a band in Germany, she honed her chops playing solo around England, before returning home to record the first of six gutsy, ever-evolving albums, and touring extensively. Rolling Stone has praised her “unsettling lyrical directness and pop composure”, and her prowess as a roots/rock songwriter is so venerated that in 2019 she was honoured at Woodford Folk Festival as an ‘emerging legend of Australian song’ by her musical peers, who covered highlights from her back catalogue.

WHAT’S THE the collective noun for mandolins? A murmur? Anyway, if you haven’t heard a rhumba or tango plucked en masse on mandolins before, now’s your chance. The Melbourne Mandolin Orchestra – now more than half a century old – may be a returning favourite at our festival, but it constantly challenges itself to explore new terrain. This concert brings together music from Latin America and Japan, as well as commissioned works from contemporary Australian composers. The orchestra is fleshed out with classic guitars, mandolas, accordions and double bass. VENUE Western Reserve Stage DATE Sunday 21 March TIME 11am ADMISSION $30/$20 DURATION 65 minutes ACCESS

BY A THREAD ONE FELL SWOOP CIRCUS
Teeny Tiny Stevies THE SECRET power of Teeny Tiny Stevies is the fact that their songs for kids are actually enjoyed by parents. That’s because sisters Beth and Byll Stephen had been performing as an (adult) indie-folk band, The Little Stevies, for years before developing their side hustle for younger ears. Now their gorgeous animated videos have clocked up more than ten million views on ABC iView, and their songs about self-care, resilience and body autonomy have become part of the fabric of childhood for thousands of little Australians.
WE ARE all connected – so the Buddhists, new-agers and psychonauts tell us – but it’s easy to forget that when navigating the minutiae of daily life. By a Thread is a reminder from One Fell Swoop Circus. The simplicity of the set-up – just rope and pulleys – makes space for the incredible acrobatics. Melbourne’s contemporary circus troop get meta, exploring trust, and the physical, emotional and relational tensions that a group built on high risk thrives on – and that the rest of us can relate to more safely.

IN THIS große rock’n’roll schwindel, Otto and Astrid – the dysfunctional siblings from cult band Die Roten Punkte – thunder through their back catalogue. Adults who enjoy the mockumentary style of Flight of the Conchords, and love a well-crafted pop-punk smash (B-52s meets Ramones meets White Stripes), will find this as entertaining as kids who inherently tune in to the bickering of siblings. It’s a winning ruse that has seen Berlin’s prince and princess of rock’n’roll nominated for 10 Green Room Awards, collecting two.
PERFORMANCE
YUMMY Unleashed Soul of Possum
MURRAY RIVER, 1853. As the wildlife flees through the bush from an unseen threat, three Wamba Wamba men must survive a cat-and-mouse chase across country to warn their people of the oncoming colonialists. Led by a loose-cannon captain, the settlers have their own internal power struggles to contend with. This tense historical live reading unpacks institutional hierarchy and social Darwinism, and is the debut by local Yapeen actor and playwright, and Wamba Wamba man, Brodie Murray.
PLEASE THINK very carefully about what you
wear to this impossibly glamorous show. YUMMY UNLEASHED blends outrageous drag, fierce burlesque and scintillating choreography with funny, surreal and touchingly raw performances. Under the direction of Valerie Hex (aka James Welsby) these superstars are internationally known in their own right, and have come together for a one-hour cultural orgy that includes avant-garde cabaret, burlesque, dance and performance art. Positively dripping with awards, this show is a celebration of all that is queer, fluid and beautiful.

The house band, Zamaan Makaan, will invite celebrated guests to perform with them. The full program of music, art and architecture is on the CSF website. ‘Makaan’ in various Persian and African languages means ‘the dwelling of’, and also has the meaning of ‘food’ in the Indonesian language. A favorite at Melbourne Design Week, it’s our hope that you’ll leave feeling nourished.
CAFÉ CANTATA
THIS ORIGINAL musical theatre performance explores unrealised ambition and second chances with poignancy and humour. It follows Lieschen, a pianist in a café who has a once-in-a-lifetime chance to sing in Paris – but at a cost. Café Cantata is written and directed by Mark Penzak with musical composition and performance by Andrée Cozens, both Castlemaine locals. It was written in response to Bach’s 1735 mini-opera Coffee Cantata, and as such, we strongly encourage you to watch with a coffee in hand.

The installation explores transformational experiences, identity and human connection, prompting the viewer to question the way they navigate their own place in the world.
IN 1841 the first squatters moved into the central and northern plains of
Victoria with the intention of making a home. Nearly 180 years later the concepts of home and connection to landscape are problematic. Traversing The Northern Plains is a video installation by Susie Elliott and Helen Mathwin, which seeks to explore evolving assumptions about inhabiting a landscape.
