Impact Report

Dear CATA friends,

At CATA, 2021 was a year full of difficulty and challenge, but also resilience, compassion, and beauty.

There’s a wonderful line in the Seamus Heaney poem Postscript about a moment of simple beauty so arresting it can “catch the heart off guard and blow it wide open.”

I think about that phrase a lot these days—how it feels to be struck by a moment and to know you have been changed.

If you want to have your heart blown wide open:

Stand in front of a painting by Katrina, where sweeping brush strokes and bold colors crash and marry into one gorgeous, harmonious whole.

Listen as Ethan gives voice to a Hamlet soliloquy, plunging you into deep human emotions from rage to sorrow to self-scrutiny.

Watch as a roomful of CATA artists write a song that brings their experiences to life through music.

And while you do all that, know that YOU made it happen.

Because of your support, CATA never stopped even when the going got (and stayed) tough. Thanks to you, CATA artists gathered with friends, explored new talents, and created moments of power and beauty.

Your generosity helped us deliver on our mission, day in and day out. In the height of the pandemic, you brought virtual programs to CATA artists who were isolated and hungry for connection. When it became safe to gather, you supported workshops outdoors, in our Great Barrington studios, and at schools, day programs, residences, and nursing homes across our community.

Seeing CATA artists reunite for the first time since the pandemic began was joyful!

Your support has positioned CATA for an exciting period of growth. Our programs have grown dramatically, even during the pandemic. Earlier this year we opened the doors to our first permanent home—a beautiful, fully accessible new headquarters and studios. Also new this year: We transitioned our professional arts faculty from contract workers to part-time employees, recognizing their key role in our mission.

In December, we honored the legacy of Dawn Lane, who retired after a 28-year career as CATA’s Artistic Director. Dawn’s artistry and advocacy for people with disabilities have had a lasting impact here at CATA. In preparation for her retirement, we worked closely with trusted consultants to plan strategically for CATA’s future. We look forward to welcoming a new member to the CATA team soon! We also want to recognize and honor our partners and the caregivers who have worked heroically to keep people with disabilities safe. Working closely with them, we are helping CATA artists recover from one of the most challenging times in their lives. Without you, CATA’s work would not be possible. You have ensured that people with disabilities across our community thrive through the arts. Please enjoy reading about the ways you made a difference for CATA artists in 2021.

Looking ahead: In our ongoing quest to expand opportunities for people with disabilities, we're inviting CATA artists, families, caregivers, and partners to sit with us and share their experiences—and their hopes and dreams for CATA—so we can better understand the needs of our community. This project will lay the groundwork for our next strategic plan and more exciting growth. Your generosity meant that CATA artists could be together and express themselves in life-changing workshops.

731 CATA ARTISTS SERVED

You brought more than 1,500 arts workshops to CATA artists across our community: children, teens, and adults with developmental disabilities and traumatic brain injuries. With your support, CATA employed 26 teaching artists to lead innovative programs in dance, painting, music, acting, juggling, yoga, writing, and more.

SCHOOL PROGRAMS EXPANDED

Because of you, CATA reached 224 children and teens with disabilities—more than ever before—bringing arts programs to classrooms across nine school districts.

PARTNERSHIPS DEEPENED

You brought CATA programs to 50 agencies, schools, and residences serving people with disabilities.

NEW PROGRAMS SPARKED BIG CREATIVITY

Your generosity helped us launch new pilot programs in portrait painting, photography, hiphop dance, songwriting, and storytelling to nurture the interests of our artists.

ELDERS STAYED CONNECTED

You gave elders in nursing homes a way to connect with their talents and share their life stories in CATA’s Art Cart program—helping people with Alzheimer’s and dementia push back against isolation.

More CATA artists than ever performed in a thrilling Virtual Gala & Performance as actors, jugglers, dancers, drummers, singers, painters, and more. Over 2,000 people tuned in—a recordbreaking audience!

ART SHOWS REACHED NEW HEIGHTS

I Am a Part of Art, CATA’s Annual Art Show, drew thousands to see the work of CATA artists at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts and the Clark Art Institute. Our online exhibit and vibrant “Meet the Artists” film brought viewers behind the scenes with exciting interviews from CATA artists and curators.

With your support, CATA artists shared their talents in inventive art exhibits and performances.

CATA actors, drummers, dancers, jugglers, singers, and painters shared their talents in our Virtual Gala.

Katrina Couture's painting Lady Liberty, featured in CATA's Virtual Gala, was seen by thousands of art lovers at the Clark Art Institute during our Annual Art show. Your support gives CATA artists the opportunity to share their talents with the wider community.

Buzz and Robin McGraw are driven to make their community a better place for every person.

“A friend invited us to a CATA performance, and immediately we were blown away. We thought: this is something everyone should see. Now, we encourage everyone to engage with CATA."

“Every time we get to be involved with CATA and with their artists, we’re truly awed,” says Buzz. “The creativity, the sense of togetherness and inclusion—it’s why we gravitate to CATA.”

When COVID hit, people with disabilities counted on CATA more than ever. As supporters, the McGraws are proud to know those programs never stopped. "CATA reached over 700 people with disabilities last year--even in a time of COVID. That's a BIG number!

To every CATA supporter and partner—thank you! You kept arts programs going for hundreds of people with disabilities.

Throughout our 2021 fiscal year, CATA held true to our core mission and principles: Fueled by your support, we worked tirelessly to meet the needs of our community, with robust, innovative programs and careful stewardship of CATA’s finances.

Many CATA artists have faced isolation and loss during the pandemic. As a result, demand for CATA programs has been at an all-time high. Your donations made it possible for us to be nimble, tenacious, and creative to engage artists with disabilities in a year rife with challenges.

Your gifts directly support programs for lowincome CATA artists who crave and deserve creative outlets.

COVID's challenges caused earned income in 2021 to fall behind pre-pandemic numbers by 25%— even while CATA provided more programs than ever. Generous donors like you stepped forward to make up the gap: contributed income rose to almost 90% of our annual budget.

As always, programs serving artists with disabilities were our primary expense. At a time when CATA artists needed us most, an outpouring of support from a record 1,087 individuals, businesses, and foundations made the difference. Your generosity sustained workshops, exhibits, and performances that provide life-changing opportunities for CATA artists.
