From the Scottish Gaelic càrn (plural càirn), ca. 1525–35, cairns are found all over the world. They vary in size from small stone markers to entire artificial hills; in complexity from loose, conical rock piles to delicately balanced sculptures. Some parts of the world still use cairns as burial places, especially where the soil is difficult to excavate or where wild animals might disturb the body. Every mountain biker is an ambassador for the sport. Be a good representative by following these rules of etiquette. › Y ield. Mountain bikers yield to hikers and equestrians. Uphill mountain bikers have the right of way over downhill riders. › Communicate. If there are two or more people in your group, tell passing hikers and equestrians how many more riders they can expect. › Be aware. Take blind corners slow enough to stop for unseen walkers or riders. › Make room. Stop well short of equestrians. Horses can be spooked by sudden moves or noise. So can beginning riders. › Stay on the trail. If the trail is too narrow for two users, dismount and pull your bike to one side. Riding off trail causes erosion and makes a bad impression. › R ide it or leave it. There’s no shame in walking a technical section of trail you can’t ride. Don’t modify it or ride an alternate line to make it easier. › Build it. Join a trail crew with your local mountain bike advocacy group. Hammock camping continues to grow as an alternative to traditional tent camping—the primary advantage being that you do not need to seek out flat, rock-free ground. However, when sleeping in a hammock, there are several things you need to know to have a positive experience: Staying warm: When temperatures drop, simply adding a sleeping bag may not be enough due to the compression of insulation under your back and convective heat loss. This problem can be solved by adding an insulating pad, such as an ENO HotSpot (which also holds your pad in place), wrapping your hammock with an underquilt, or sleeping on a “space blanket” which reflects body heat back to you. Staying dry: Just like a tent, a hammock requires a rain fly for inclement weather, such as an ENO ProFly Rain Tarp. A tarp should be suspended over your hammock and extend beyond the ends and sides of the hammock to offer adequate protection.
