Performance Fit offers a more upright rider position—perfect for long days

Ride Like the Wind There’s nothing more exhilarating than being part of a smoothly rotating group of riders trading the lead and flying down the road. But like a chain, a pace line is only as strong (and safe) as its weakest link.

Do • Match other riders’ time at the front. Generally, the faster the pace, the shorter the pull.

Always rotate off the same side as the other riders.

• Try to maintain the pace smoothly during your pull.

• Drop back before you’re tired, otherwise it can be hard to catch onto the back of the paceline.

• Communicate. Use hand signals to warn following riders of obstacles, debris on the road or turns. When you’re ready to pull off to, say, the left, gently flick your right elbow and look to the left before you pull off.

• Watch for dropped riders. A paceline can quickly outdistance a solo rider, particularly one who’s tired.

Don’t • Surge during your pull. This causes a yo-yo effect at the back of the line and breaks up the smooth rhythm.

• Stare at the wheel in front of you. Look up the road ahead. A rise may slow the group. Obstacles can may be in the road.

• Brake suddenly. Instead, control your speed while drafting by coasting, sitting up, or lightly feathering the brakes.

• Stand up fast or make other sudden movements. When you stand, the bike moves backward underneath you relative to other riders and can overlap wheels, which is dangerous.

Be Smart: Riding in a pace line requires total concentration; there’s no time for sight-seeing.

Try it first with a friend who knows the ropes.

Eight vents allow cooling air over head

• Store it. Extreme heat and intense UV radiation can degrade your helmet. To keep your helmet in top condition store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight when you’re not riding.

A bike seat bears at least 60% of your weight, so it’s crucial to make sure it’s comfortable.

• Seat height is the most important. If it’s too low, you’ll waste energy and strain your muscles because you can’t fully extend your legs.

Too high and you’ll stress your knees and hips as you rock back and forth.

Why do you need the nose? You don’t sit on it, but it’s crucial for controlling the bike in corners.

Set The Angle If you have a flat back in an aero position, flatter extensions are generally faster. If your back is rounded, point the extensions up a few degrees for better power and control.

Practice Aerobars compromise control since they put more weight on the front wheel.

Practice riding in the position until you’re comfortable with it.

Think ahead Your hands aren’t near the brake levers, so never ride on aerobars on curvy descents or in traffic.

• The neck roll: Slowly roll your head in a full circle to let the neck muscles naturally stretch out.

Mountain. Shoes are balanced between stiffness and walkability. Pedals are double-sided for easy entry every time.

Shoes and pedals are heavier. Less stability and power transfer efficiency on the bike, but far more walkable.

Go with a mountain-style system if you think you’ll be spending much time walking (especially on hard or uneven surfaces).

Check your cleats several times a season for wear, or if the connection between shoe and pedal seems loose. Cleats wear out over time and should be replaced.

To get the system that best suits your needs, think about: 1. How much fluid you’ll need. For long rides, especially in hot weather, you’ll want a pack to hold at least one liter for every hour you ride.

2. Consider practical issues: whether the reservoir is easily removable for filling and cleaning, the feel of the mouthpiece and the availability of replacement parts.

3. How much gear you have to carry.

All helmets sold in the US must meet the same CPSC safety standards. So what do you get with pricey lids? Lots, actually.

Better fit. Higher-end helmets have nicer retention systems that are easier to use. They cradle your head and help keep the helmet steady so it doesn’t flop around.

Better cooling. Helmets with less material are often more expensive. That’s because they still have to meet those safety standards with less foam. That takes a lot of engineering and time, but results in a helmet that’s as cool—or cooler—than not wearing one at all.

Style. OK, we’ll admit it. A nicelooking helmet is fun to wear. If you’d wear the $150 model but not the base one, then get it—what matters is not why you wear it or what you paid, but that you do wear it.

Proper installation is critical.

Mounting a cleat in the wrong position can lead to overuse injuries. If you need help, come in to the shop for advice or a scientific fit session.

Pedals allow your foot to rotate (or “float”) slightly during the pedal stroke, which prevents injury. The amount of float you need depends on your pedaling style.

If you hear squeaking or it’s difficult to clip out, add a drop of lube to the release spring and the cleat face.

Many pedals have adjustable release tension to make it easier or harder to clip out. More experienced riders typically favor higher tension.

Check your cleats regularly for wear. If it’s easy to release or there is a loose feel between cleat and pedal, it’s probably time for a new one. We’ve got these inexpensive replacements at the shop.

Energy bars and gels are both great ways to get a quick boost of energy, but they’re designed for different situations.

Energy bars are designed more for sustained energy.

They are formulated to taste good and allow for longer, timereleased energy stores. If you’re on a long ride, you’ll want bars as much for the taste and texture as you will for the fuel. Try several kinds to find a flavor you like; in this case, taste is every bit as important as nutrition—you won’t eat what you don’t like.

Mimic. Almost every ride has a leader or two. Watch them and learn from them— how do they point out road hazards? Slow the pack for a turn or stop sign? Mimic those behaviors when it’s your turn at the front.

When comfortable, start pushing.

Stay in the pack for the first few rides. Once you feel you’ve got some experience, try taking a pull, bridging a gap or following a fast wheel on a descent. Group rides are invaluable for building skills and ending fitness plateaus.

• Lube your chain regularly. Put a drop on each link pin and backpedal to work it in, then wipe clean until dry.

While roof-mounting bikes is a bit more difficult, they make for easier parking and access to trunks and rear doors.

Steps In Choosing A Roof System: 1. Fit your car by asking us which rack mounting feet fit your roofline or factory-mounted rack.

2. F it your cargo. Start by considering how much you’d like to carry. That suggests the length of the crossbar you need. The specific items you’ll carry determine the types of carrier mount you’ll use to attach your cargo to the crossbars.

3. Choose security. Protect your rack and what’s on it with a variety of locks. Some are same-keyed for convenience.

Fork or Wheel Mount?

Fork-mount racks are a time-tested design. They require front-wheel removal and may not work with all bike styles.

Wheel-mount racks are the most versatile, and fit almost any type and size bike. They are not as aerodynamic as fork mounts.

Safe and Secure on Your Car Taking your bike on a road trip is a great way to expand your riding horizons and have new experiences. Here’s how to keep your bike safely and securely attached to your car for your entire trip.

• Lock it. Many racks come with either standard or optional locking accessories to keep your bike securely attached to your car. The gold standard: a system that locks your bike to the rack, and the rack to the car.

• Remove easily stolen items. For any easily removable item—a wheel, seatpost or accessory— you can’t secure with a lock, remove it and store it inside the car, preferably out of sight.

• Check tie-downs. Always doublecheck all attachment points for the rack itself—tie-down straps, hitch or bolts on roof racks—and straps or other attachments securing the bike to the rack.

• End the garage menace. Even a low-speed collision of a few miles an hour is enough to destroy a bike.

An easy way to remind yourself is to place a box or other item just behind the door before you leave. If you have to get out to move it, you’ll notice your bike on the car.

• Away from exhaust. Most hitch and trunk racks today do a great job of keeping bikes safe and secure. But take care to ensure that wheels are held away from the exhaust, which can get hot enough to damage high-performance parts like carbon fiber wheels.
