Did You Know? Florida State Traffic Laws BICYCLES = VEHICLES A cyclist must follow the SAME traffic rules common to all drivers of all vehicles and has the SAME rights to the roadway. On all multi-lane roads, cyclists have the SAME right and responsibility as motorists to use the full right lane. "The 3-foot Law": The driver of a vehicle (car or bicycle) overtaking another vehicle proceeding in the same direction shall not pass to the left thereof at a safe distance and shall not again drive to the right side of the roadway until safely clear of the overtaken vehicle. The driver of any vehicle overtaking a bicycle must pass the bicycle at a safe distance of not less than 3 feet from the bicycle.

The Evolution of Cycling Shoes
Men’s
In the nineteenth century, the first cycling shoes offered minimal support and no secure attachment to the bike. Rigid soles of wood or hardened leather increased power transfer to the pedals. Today, soles made of materials including plastic, fiberglass, polyamide and carbon fiber transmit even more of the rider’s power to the pedals. Toe “clips” — leather or nylon straps that ran over the top of the foot — improved the rider’s connection to the pedal. A cleat was later nailed to the sole for added security. These immovable cleats were replaced by adjustable ones in the 1980s.
Low-maintenance sealed cartridge axle units
Shimano road shoes
SPD-SL and SPD cleat compatible
Great shoes for the road. The fiberglass-reinforced polyamide soles on these men’s and women’s road shoes are stiff to inspire you to ride your fastest, with just a little hint of flex too. Shimano Men’s SH-RO86L $109.99 Shimano Women’s SH-WR40 $109.99
Stainless-steel top plate lasts forever (and it’s shiny) Adjustable entry/release tension
Shimano 105 Road Pedal PD-5610 The road pedal for everyone. These 105 pedals give you the speedy, connected feel of Shimano’s highest-level pedals—at a mid-level price. $109.99
In 1984, Look adopted ski industry technology to pedals, allowing easy step in and twist out. These “clipless” pedals added a new level of efficiency, security and comfort.
A tale of two cleats Road—SPD-SL cleat is larger for greater foot-to-pedal stability and more power with less foot fatigue.
In 1990, Shimano’s SPD system introduced a much smaller, recessed cleat to enable better offroad riding and easier walking. New designs continue to improve comfort and biomechanical efficiency. By the early ‘90s, adjustable cleats allowed riders to fine-tune their foot position, and rotational “float” accommodates every rider’s individual pedaling style. The latest innovation is custom-fit shoes for an individual cyclist’s foot. Some cycling shoes accept custommade orthotic footbeds, while others can be heat-molded to your feet.
While many cycling shoemakers work hard to integrate their shoes with your pedals, Shimano has a distinct advantage. Shimano makes both. Come to the shop, and we’ll show you the ideal shoes and pedals for your type of riding.
Mountain/all-around—SPD cleat is small and recessed into the bottom of your shoe. This allows efficient pedaling and easy walking. Micro-adjust buckle for security and adjustability Men’s

Great shoes for dirt (and beyond). These high-quality mountain shoes give you clipped-in pedaling efficiency and rubber-sole walking comfort. If you’re going to own one pair of cycling shoes, this is a great choice. SPD cleat compatible. Shimano Men’s SH-MO86L $109.99 Shimano Women’s SH-WM60 $99.99
Light, breathable synthetic leather and mesh upper
To clip in or not to clip in? That is the question, but with this pedal you don’t have to decide. One side gives you the pedaling efficiency of an SPD cleat; the other side gives you the flexible confidence of a stable platform. $99.99

Technology to Perform Skins™ performance equipment has been designed to wrap and support key muscle groups to reduce muscle movement and focus the direction of the muscle. The wrapping effect and specific compression also dramatically reduce muscle vibration resulting in less soft tissue damage and muscle soreness.
Riding With Your Significant Other Cycling can be one of the most enjoyable ways to spend time together— especially when you follow these basic tips: Know each other’s limits. One of you will be stronger. One of you will be more adventurous. And one of you will have a better sense of humor. The less experienced rider should dictate the pace and, in the case of mountain biking, the terrain. Both of you should be relaxed and having fun; pushing the envelope is seldom a good idea. Stop and smell the roses. This gives your partner a rest, and it helps you both enjoy the journey. Plan routes with shops, parks, restaurants, swimming holes or other fun spots. Plan a great meal after the ride. (That’s why many of us ride in the first place!)
How do SKINS work? Skins’ proprietary BioAcceleration formula uses various degrees of compression on different parts of the body. By applying the highest level of pressure on the muscles furthest from the heart, Skins engineered gradient compression forces up to 30% more blood back to the heart and… • Removes lactic acid faster • Delivers more oxygen to working muscles • Improves strength and endurance
• Allows for quicker recovery from exercise
• Increases time before feeling exhausted
• Decreases post-exercise muscle soreness
• Optimizes body temperature in warm and cool conditions
• R educes swelling, dehydration and leg discomfort, especially during travel
Antibacterial and antimicrobial treatments discourage growth of bacteria and help prevent odor
UPF 50+ provides sun protection
Get help. It can be hard to separate spouse-spouse roles from teacher-student roles. Encourage the less experienced rider to take a class from another expert. Come by the shop, and we’ll help you find rides you can enjoy together.
“Our athletes are very excited about Skins compression garments. They are an excellent recovery tool and the riders wear them at every chance they get between training, racing and whilst travelling. It is this kind of product that we want our riders to have the benefit of to give them every chance to race well and recover well.’ – Team Columbia High Road

Take the High-Technology Road An integrated approach to building great bikes
After winning the 2007 Tour de France sprinter’s jersey on the Tarmac SL2, Team Quick Step’s leader Tom Boonen challenged Specialized to build a bike to conquer the rough cobbles of the famous Paris-Roubaix race. Specialized’s global design, engineering and testing teams turned to FACT—Functional Advanced Composite Technology.
How Shoes Can Help You Pedal Your feet were designed for walking, not pedaling. This can create a few issues: Your arch collapses when you walk, which is a great way to absorb shock. When your arch collapses while pedaling, you lose power. Your big toes probably rest a bit higher than your little toes. This is called varus angulation, and it can cause your knee to track inward when you pedal, decreasing your power and endurance.
“ With the Roubaix bicycle having won the Paris-Roubaix race, comfort is no longer a luxury, but a performance advantage.” August ‘08
Ask us about the Ruby, Dolce and Vita series bikes, designed specifically for women.
Your feet might not like being inside some cycling shoes. During long rides your forefoot and toes might feel hot or numb.
More than just carbon—FACT integrates disciplined engineering, appropriate materials, cutting-edge fabrication, round after round of prototypes and endless test cycles to achieve the perfect feel and balance: super high strength, race-winning efficiency, responsive handling and, of course, super low weight. Tom wins, and you win—Boonen proved it when he won the punishing Paris-Roubaix with room to spare. Nothing is smoother and faster than the new Specialized Roubaix.
Perfect fit—4-position Specialized Comp-Set stem is a stiff but adjustable work of art
Quick and comfortable— Speed-oriented FACT 7r carbon frame absorbs vertical jarring
The right cycling shoes can “correct” these tendencies and help you ride better than ever. Come to the shop and ask us about:
Also available with triple chainrings
Varus wedge A wedge built into the outsole tilts your foot slightly to the outside. This can keep your foot, knee and hip better aligned while pedaling. Pedal stronger, longer. Arch support A longitudinal arch inside your shoe turns your flexible arch into a rigid lever. Metatarsal button A raised section in the forefoot spreads your metatarsal bones to keep your nerves and blood vessels working perfectly—and your feet feeling great.
Competitive road cyclists report safer driving behavior than drivers who have no cycling experience. Martha, C., and P. Delhomme, 2008, “Risk comparative judgment while driving a car among competitive road cyclists and non-cyclists”
Nothing is Smoother and Faster.
Endurance Road Fast can be forgiving. Perhaps you’re not willing to sacrifice comfort for all-out speed. Specialized gives you a comfortable riding position, vibration-absorbing technology and competition-inspired performance in the race-caliber Roubaix series (2008 Paris-Roubaix winner) and the recreationally-inclined Sequoia series. The founding principle of Specialized is clear, to focus on the rider’s need for functional and technically advanced products that provide a performance benefit. Specialized is driven by one vision that is as simple as it is bold: Be the best cycling brand in the world. Being the best applies to everything that bears the Specialized name: bikes, equipment, services and our people. This is not a destination but a constant and exhaustive journey.

Synapse Active Vibration Elimination (S.A.V.E.) carbon stays give smooth, efficient ride
• Saddle fore-aft position. With level pedals, the front of your knee should be directly above your pedal spindle. Moving your saddle backward emphasizes your hip muscles and takes pressure off your knees; most riders find this less powerful but more comfortable. • Saddle angle. The top of your saddle should be level, as measured by a straight edge laid across the nose and tail of the saddle. • Handlebar reach. The ideal distance from your saddle to your handlebar depends on your riding style.

Not Just a Mountain Bike: a Specialized 15 years of suspension experience enable Specialized to fine-tune FSR and TSI technologies to perfectly suit your riding style.
Off-Road Descents Made Easier Next time you ride down a trail, try these tips. You’ll likely have more control, more confidence— and more fun. Heavy feet, light hands No matter where or how you’re riding, try to drive your weight into your pedals, not your handlebars. This centers your weight over the bike and keeps you in control. Hips back Try pushing your hips back, slightly behind the seat. This better balances your weight over the pedals, and it helps you recruit your powerful hip muscles. Shoulders down This gives your arms more range of movement for bumps and turns. When you get nervous, you will try to stand tall. Don’t! Keep your shoulders low (and your hands weightless). Elbows out This gives you greater strength and more range of motion. Also looks cool.

FSR Suspension. Specialized’s patented FSR technology ensures your suspension is always active: whether you’re coasting, braking or pedaling. Few bikes can make this claim.

Every Specialized suspension bike boasts FSR technology, from World Championship cross-country race machines to the bike you ride on your favorite trails.

“ For most of us, if we’re realistic about the kind of riding we do, the Stumpjumper is the perfect choice.”
Practice riding in this position, but never be stiff. When you get into rough terrain, stay loose and let the bike move beneath you—but always come back to your neutral position so you’re ready for the next section.

Get the Power to Push Since 1991, riders like you have made GU synonymous with energy gels— and for good reason: GU products taste great, and they help you ride your best. Come to the shop and give GU gels, drinks and chews a try.
Get The Most From Your Energy Gel
PMS #'s Red - 032 coated Blue - 2735 coated
What’s in a gel? Most gels contain about 100 calories’ worth of carbohydrates, plus electrolytes and other performance-enhancing ingredients.
GU Chomps
Sometimes you just want something to chomp on. New GU Chomps satisfy your craving for solid food while delivering proven GU nutrition. Chew on a Chomp—chew up the competition. Flavors: Blueberry Pomegranate, Orange, Cranberry Apple, Strawberry. $2.20
How often? Suck down a gel 15 minutes before you ride, to top off your electrolyte and glucose stores. To get the most of out of the packet, roll it up like a toothpaste tube. During your ride, consume another gel every 30-45 minutes. Be sure to wash each gel down with a few sips of fluid. While you’re at it, try to drink 24-30 ounces of fluid per hour. Where do I keep them? • Stash a few gels in your jersey pocket or a bento box. • Carry multiple gels in a small plastic flask. • Pro tip: Tape gel packets along your bike’s top tube. Only tape down the tear-off top tab; that way when you grab a gel it’s open and ready to eat. Stow your empties in a pocket or under the hem of your bike shorts. What about the calories? If you ride hard for an hour, you’ll burn 500 or more calories. Three gels give you 300 calories. With energy gels you can ride longer and feel better—and still burn extra calories. Come to the shop, and try a gel on your next ride!

Roctane Ultra Endurance Energy Gel What you need for your longest, hardest rides. Tested on thousands of athletes in the world’s most demanding events, Roctane Ultra Endurance Energy Gel takes the original GU recipe and adds special ingredients to boost performance in sustained, high-energy efforts. $2.50
THE GU NUTRITIONAL DIFFERENCE GU Chomps and gels are more than tasty — they’re scientifically formulated to help you perform. Inside every GU product you’ll find: • Carbohydrates: Complex carbohydrates (maltodextrin) and simple carbohydrates (tapioca syrup and cane sugar) help you ride faster and longer. • Amino Acids: A GU exclusive: Branched chain amino acids (leucine, valine and isoleucine) provide extra energy, help you maintain
concentration and accelerate your recovery. Hisitidine, an essential amino acid, actually slows down the build-up of lactic acid in your muscles.
• Antioxidants: A heaping dose of all-natural vitamins C and E fights free radicals to help you last longer and feel less sore afterward. • Electrolytes: Meaningful levels of sodium, potassium and calcium keep you properly hydrated and firing on all cylinders.
Based on gas prices of about $4/gallon, the annual direct cost of owning, operating and driving a passenger car roughly 15,000 miles is nearly $14,000. (It costs about $300 a year to maintain a bike.) - Commute Solutions; Moritz, 1997

Hardtail bikes have front suspension forks and rigid frames. They tend to be light, durable and affordable, and they ride well on dirt roads and smoother trails. 29" hardtails—with 29" wheels instead of 26" wheels— deliver the simplicity of rigid frames with the smoother rolling of bigger wheels. Race suspension bikes have about 100mm (4") of suspension travel front and rear. They have a singular purpose: to ride trails as quickly and efficiently as possible. These bikes win all the major cross-country races. Trail bikes typically have more suspension—usually 120-140mm—and more stable handling than race bikes. They allow typical riders to enjoy steeper, more technical trails with greater comfort and control. Trail bikes are increasingly popular among serious riders who don’t race.
If you just want to ride—forget what everyone else is riding—you’ll appreciate Cannondale’s approach to bike building: Ignore the fads. Focus on quality. Never stop innovating. The environmental impact caused by mountain biking is generally equivalent or less than that caused by hiking, and both are substantially less impacting than horse or motorized activities. Science Review and Best Practices, 2007

“Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel…the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood.” Susan B. Anthony, New York World interview, February 2, 1896

“The more I’ve been mountain biking, the more I see myself as a female. In letting your femininity go to become a mountain biker, you actually find it more.” Mountain bike racer Niki Gudex, ‘FHM magazine,’ February 2005 “I guess I just have bigger ovaries.” Pro downhill racer Missy Giove, on why she was so dominant “The bicycle is just as good company as most husbands and, when it gets old and shabby, a woman can dispose of it and get a new one without shocking the entire community.” Ann Strong, Minneapolis Tribune, 1895 “My wife…thinks cycling is a great way to spend time as a family while burning a few calories. For her, the family ride is quality time. Then again, she does not have the trailer with 50 or so stuffed animals and the 2-yearold singing “Old McDonald” attached to her bike as we climb what must be Mont Ventoux. Hmm…now that I think about it, cycling is the best way to burn a bazillion calories and hang with the family.” U.S. bike shop owner, VeloNews, 2005

Make Your Rides More Enlightening CatEye invented the flashing bike light and the cycle computer decades ago. Today CatEye technology makes cycling easier, safer and more fulfilling for everyone. Whether you’re a weekend warrior, serious commuter or hardcore racer, come see our selection of CatEye lights and computers.
5 Things to Know About Bike Lights 1. Start at the bar. Mount your main light source on your handlebar. That’s most convenient for city riding, and it gives you a good base for off-roading.
Strada Wireless A sleek computer for everyone. The Strada Wireless gives you the essential data—current, maximum and average speed; distance and time—in a slim, wire-free package that looks great on any bike. $60
2. Go wide. A wide beam gives you the broadest coverage and works best as your main light source. 3. Aim high. Do not point your light at the ground directly in front of your bike. Instead, point it as far forward as possible—to where you want to go. The brighter your light, the farther ahead you can aim it, and the faster you can safely ride. 4. Heads up. For off-road riding, augment your wide-angle handlebar light with a helmet-mounted spot beam. This illuminates dark nooks and tight turns, and it keeps you flowing as if it’s daytime. 5. Make sure they see you. A rear-mounted red LED tail light is mandatory—especially if you ride in traffic. Some tail lights are so bright they make you more visible during the day. 6. Get a recharge. Rechargeable batteries save money and hassle, and they reduce waste. If you night-ride often, consider a headlight with an integrated rechargeable battery. Just plug your light into an outlet when you get home, and it’ll be fully charged in the morning.
Each U.S. rush-hour auto commuter spends an average of 38 hours a year stuck in traffic. This costs the United States more than $78 billion in lost productivity and wasted fuel.
TL-LD1100 Tail Light You will be seen. CatEye’s brightest tail light features 10 LEDs and four modes: flashing, constant, side to side and random. Runs 50 hours in constant mode and 100 hours in flashing modes. Uses two AA batteries. Water resistant. $40

Did you know… CO2 for bicycle tire inflation is comparable to opening a soda bottle. A 16-gram CO2 cylinder has about the same amount of CO2 found in a 2-liter bottle of soda. CO2, which is part of the natural carbon cycle, includes inflating your bicycle tire, opening bottles of soda, and even breathing. These are completely different from burning fossil fuels, which releases CO2 that has been trapped for millions of years.

Stay in balance. Too much cycling (yes, there is such a thing) exposes you to muscle imbalances and posture problems. Maintain bone density. Because cycling is non-weight bearing, it doesn’t build bone as well as weight lifting. Try these exercises at home with just your bodyweight and dumbbells. Quality of movement is more important than how much weight you lift.

They Call it Speed Weaponry for a Very Good Reason
Zipp Speed Weaponry sponsors top athletes in triathlon, road racing, track and cyclocross–and you can wield the same race-winning weapons. When you come in for the trickest carbon wheels on the planet, also check out Zipp’s carbon bars, stems and cranks. To learn about the amazing technology inside Zipp components, check out www.zipp.com.
404 Clincher
Get Aero, Get Faster There’s no substitute for smart training, but aerodynamics can have a huge effect on your cycling performance–especially on flatter, faster road rides. Air resistance increases exponentially with speed, which means when you double your speed, you quadruple the air drag. That’s why it’s so hard to go faster when you’re already going fast. The shape of things to come. Aerodynamic wheels, frames, handlebars and other components are continually wind-tunnel tested to pass through headwinds, crosswinds and swirling gusts with as little disruption as possible. It’s the dimples. Since the 1930s, golf balls have used dimpled surfaces to reduce drag and improve flight. Dimples are now being used in high-performance bicycle wheels–and top pro teams swear by them. Don’t forget your body. To ride your fastest, you want to be compact and aerodynamic, but you also must be able to pedal comfortably. Come to the shop and we’ll help you pick the right equipment–and we’ll make sure it fits you correctly.
The number of Americans who ride bicycles is greater than all those who ski, golf, and play tennis combined. - National Sporting Goods Association, 2007
Dominate any ride. When hardcore racers think of Zipp, they think of the 404. These wheels have dominated time trials and road races since the heyday of triathlete Mark Allen. The 2009 version is even faster. Weight: 1615 grams per pair. $2300
ABLCTM (Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control) Zipp’s dimpled rim surface creates a “boundary layer” that keeps air attached to the downwind surface of the rim, much like a flying golf ball. This significantly reduces drag– and significantly increases your speed.

Do You Need a Repair Stand? Yes. You simply can’t do careful work without a stand. A stand holds your bike stationary but allows access to all parts, so you can adjust shifting and pedal the bike by hand to check the accuracy of your adjustment. A stand elevates the bike so you’re not stooping over to work. It also holds the bike stable so you can tighten parts confidently. And it makes cleaning easier, too. Clamp Carefully When using your workstand, clamp your bike on the seatpost, not the frame tubes. The clamp is very powerful and can mar the decals and crush the thin-wall tubing used in many of today’s bicycles. This isn’t covered under warranty.
Adjustable clamp fits tubes 7/8" to 3" wide

Reusable: Doesn’t become one of the 40 million plastic water bottles Americans throw away each day
Why is water so important?
Polar Bottle® was born in 1994—the brainstorm of two cyclists who wanted to keep their drinks cool longer. Polar Bottles are proudly designed and manufactured in Boulder, CO. Come in and check ‘em out.
Recyclable: Every part except the valve and foil liner Safe: All materials are BPA and Phthalate-free
You are made of water. Water is your body’s primary chemical component, making up about 60% of your body weight. Even mild dehydration will drain your energy and make you feel tired.
Superior Valve Made of flexible durable urethane, instead of rubber, it’s smooth to use, seals very well and unlike most, is removable for cleaning.
How much should you drink? The Institute of Medicine advises, on average, men should consume 3 liters (13 cups) of beverages a day. Women should drink 2.2 liters (9 cups) per day.
Wide mouth allows ice cubes easily into the bottle and makes cleaning easy
Drink an extra 32 oz. per hour of intense exercise.
Freezer and top rack dishwasher safe
Drink even more when it’s hot or humid, and when you’re at high altitude. And if you’re ill, pregnant or breastfeeding. To be safe, drink a glass (or bottle) of water with and between every meal. Hydrate before, during and after exercise. Hint: Carry a water bottle. Keep it cool Cool drinks not only taste great; they can improve your performance: In a study* of eight male cyclists riding in a hot, humid environment, the cyclists who were given cold drinks before and during exercise showed 23% more endurance than the cyclists who were given warm drinks. * “ Cold Drink Ingestion Improves Exercise Endurance Capacity in the Heat,” Lee, Shirreffs, Maughan

13 Tips for TrunkMounted Bike Racks Trunk-mounted bike racks are an easy way to carry bikes on occasional trips. They are light and easy to install and remove. 1. A void scratching your paint by cleaning your car before you attach a trunk-mounted rack. 2. N ever exceed the load capacity of your rack. 3. Basic bike frames (with standard tubes) fit all racks without any changes. Carries two or three bikes, up to 35 lbs each, and fits both 1¼" and 2" hitch sizes
4. Specially shaped frames sometimes require accessory beams that create virtual top tubes. 5. Mount bikes yourself, or make sure others know how to do it correctly. 6. Alternate handlebars so bikes fit closer together. 7. Strap wheels so they don’t spin and your bars don’t turn. 8. Ground clearance should be at least 12 inches. 9. The rear-most bike should be highest. Either angle the rack upward or put the smallest bike on back. 10. Avoid your tail pipe. Hot exhaust can ruin a tire.
Thelma Series The easiest way to load almost any bike. These beautiful, low-slung hitch racks are perfect for women and people who drive tall vehicles. Available in three models: 2-bike, 3-bike and the 3-bike Juvenile, which includes a cradle for 20" wheels. $279.99–$339.99
Storage T-Stand quickly transforms carrier to a bike storage solution
11. Remove your pedals on long trips. You’ll pack bikes closer and with fewer scratches. 12. Drive carefully and watch out for bumps. Most racks are not certified for off-road use. 13. Frequently check your rack for proper fit. Replace worn straps. If you carry your bikes often, consider a hitch-mounted rack. Hitch racks can hold more bikes, and some models are incredibly easy to use.
Rack slips conveniently into a transport bag to help you reach your final destination
T-Bones Versatile enough to work beyond the car. T-Bones easily converts into a bike rack storage system for your home or office. On the car, the integrated lock system and adjustable set-back keep your car, rack and bikes all safe and secure. And because it’s light—as little as 10 lbs.— it won’t slow you down. $349.99–$379.99
