To the north, the county borders on the eastern end of the Pyrenees, which reach the sea at steep and rocky Cape Creus. Alt Empordà is the easternmost county in the Catalan Pyrenees, its climate favouring the natural presence of typical Mediterranean vegetation. The capital is Figueres. Garrotxa. This county straddles the mountains and the plains, volcanic lands which run down from the Pyrenees to the Cordillera Transversal mountain range. The Croscat Volcano
ON FOOT: VERY EASY / DISTANCE: 2.9 km / DURATION: 45 min
The Croscat Volcano is Strombolian in type. Its horseshoe-shaped crater, 600 m long and 350 m wide, is not visible from any point along our route. Due to quarrying for lapilli over many years, a huge crack more than 100 m deep and 500 m long has formed. The quarrying finally came to an end in 1991 when the Catalan government bought out the mining company. Puig Safont Volcano
Access to the Croscat Volcano is regulated and controlled, and visitors are required to respect opening times and follow the instructions posted on information panels inside the Natural Park. Guidebooks and other publications are available from Can Passavent. Our route starts at the Santa Margarida picnic area. Crossing the GI-524 Olot-Santa Pau road, follow the signs to the Croscat Volcano. Passing through Masnou, we find a turn-off on the left which leads us to Can Passavent, the Natural Park’s reception and information centre.

Fageda d’en Jordà beech forest (Joan Maragall path)
ON FOOT: VERY EASY / DISTANCE: 1.5 km / DURATION: 22 min
Fageda d’en Jordà is a beech forest growing on the lava flows from the Croscat Volcano. Its relief is gently undulating, with small hills known locally as tossols. The landscape changes greatly here from one season to another, with reddish tones predominating in autumn, grey in winter and fresh shades in summer. Besides beech, there are oak and holly trees which also grow in the sunnier parts of the forest.
Going down the steps, we find the path leading into the forest, which forms a loop through the forest and takes you back to the car park.
Olot
Leaving the Can Serra car park (4 km along the GI-524 Olot-Santa Pau road) southwards, we cross the road. On the other side are the steps leading down into the beech forest and, on the right, a monument erected in memory of the poet Joan Maragall, inscribed with the famous poem this forest inspired him to write.

ON FOOT: VERY DIFFICULT / DISTANCE: 12.3 km / DURATION: 5 h 30 min
Pedraforca, a massif in the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, is one of the most emblematic and outstanding mountainous areas in Catalonia. Our route takes us to Pedraforca’s highest peak, Pollegó Superior, from where we can enjoy far-ranging views over the surrounding countryside and mountains. Mountain goats can also frequently be spotted along the way. Those attempting the hike should be fit, have good orientation skills and be prepared to take particular care when crossing the rocky terrain between the Verdet pass and the Enforcadura. To reach the starting point, leave Berga on the C-16 “Eix del Llobregat” road northwards towards the Cadí tunnel. At Malanyeu, turn left onto the B-400 to Gósol, where we find the car park. The route begins in Plaça Major (1,426 m). Taking Carrer Picasso, we turn left into Plaça Dr Pere Pons, from where Carrer Cerdanya leads out of the town towards Bagà (signposted). Follow the white and red GR-150 and GR-107 long-distance path signs, and the white and yellow signs indicating short-distance path PR C-123.

The valleys of Sant Joan, in the municipal borough of Valls de Valira, lie in northwest Alt Urgell, on the border with Andorra and Pallars Sobirà county. Our route begins in La Seu d’Urgell, from where we take the N-145 road 2 km to the village of Anserall on the River Valira. Next, we ascend from La Seu, turning off to the left. The most interesting monument in Anserall is the old Romanesque Monastery of Sant Serni de Tavèrnoles (built in 1040). We now return to the main road until a signpost indicates that we should turn off to the left to Cívis. Another 5 km along the Cívis road brings us to Argolell, where we can admire the Romanesque Church of Santa Eugènia. This road follows one of the main routes used by smugglers in the past. Our visit to Argolell concluded, we retrace our steps back to the crossroads, now taking the road to Sant Joan Fumat, where we can see the church. Further on, in Asnurri, we can stop at the Romanesque Church of Santa Eulàlia before finally reaching Civís, one of the most attractive villages in the county, with its typical high mountain architecture and with many houses sporting stone roofs and wooden balconies.

BY CAR
This route begins in La Seu, where we take the C-14 “Eix del Segre” road towards Organyà at the southern end of the county. A few kilometres before we reach this town we can visit “Els Pontarrons”, a site containing remains from the old medieval road. Here are four bridges, built to cross huge crevasses in the rock. Organyà, which lies 22 kilometres from La Seu d’Urgell, is famous for the book of homilies named after the town. Discovered in 1905, the Homilies d’Organya constitute one of the oldest literary documents written in Catalan. From Organyà, we go on to visit Fígols (2 km away), where we can admire the Romanesque Church of Sant Víctor. Back on the main road again, we continue to Coll de Nargó. This town, along with El Pont de Claverol (Noguera Pallaresa), can rightly be considered the capital of the raier (“raft-maker’s”) world. Nowadays, in a bid to revive this tradition of steering rafts of felled trees downriver, an annual descent is organised, and takes place on the third Sunday in August. Here, too, we can visit the Raier Museum and the Romanesque Church of Sant Climent, a monument declared of historic and artistic interest due to its splendid belltower.

Pallars Sobirà According to legend, the lord of Àrreu built a high tower in his castle in which to lock away his daughter when he found out that she had fallen in love with a young Moorish man. He kept her imprisoned here until, one dark night, the young man climbed the tower wall in order to rescue his beloved. The next day, the lord set out to recover his daughter, abandoning all his possessions. The legend does not tell us whether he found her or whether the young couple lived happily ever after. Val d'Aran. Occupying a valley watered by the River Garonne, Val d’Aran lies at the westernmost end of the Catalan Pyrenees. The fact that this is the only Atlantic valley in the Central Pyrenees confers peculiar geographic, climatic and human characteristics on the area. Val d’Aran A walk around the lakes of Colomèrs
ON FOOT: MEDIUM-HIGH DIFFICULTY DISTANCE: (SHORT ROUTE: 4.45 km) / (LONG ROUTE: 9.40 km) DURATION: (SHORT ROUTE: 2 h 45 min) / (LONG ROUTE: 4 h 45 min)
The Colomèrs cirque is a circular mountain bowl or basin whose most outstanding peaks include the Creu de Colomèrs, the Tuc de Ratera, the Gran Tuc de Colomèrs and the Tuc de Sendroisa, among others. The sheer rock walls and steep canals make this a truly spectacular sight. All the surrounding mountain peaks command magnificent panoramic views over the dazzling infinity of lakes that lay at our feet. The route begins at this point, in the village of Salardú. We take the asphalted track leading up towards the Aiguamòg Valley to Banhs de Tredòs (9.5 km) before turning onto an earth track, continuing for 3.5 km (4x4 vehicles only) to reach the start of the path to the Colomèrs mountain refuge. Vehicle circulation is restricted along this second part of the route between July and September (a taxi service is available). Two signposted circular routes are recommended from the Colomèrs refuge: the short route (yellow signs) and the long route (red signs). The second route leads to the culminating point, Còth de Pòdo, allowing us to enjoy spectacular views of superb landscapes along much of the way.
