Catamount Club – Donor Spotlight

Randy White and Kim Hunter

Randy White, a financial adviser, has been a driving force behind the Catamount Club's "Greek Challenge" through his former fraternity, Sigma Chi. White never missed a football game as a student. He and his wife Kim Hunter put up a $30,000 gift challenge for the "Whee Are One" fund back in November of 2020. White earend a finance degree from WCU in 1989 and a MBA in 1991.

Why is Western Carolina University special to you?

“WCU holds a special place in my heart. I arrived in Cullowhee an 18 year old who didn’t know much of anything. My time at Western Carolina allowed me the opportunity to receive a top notch education, as well as develop friendships that have lasted to this day. I’m part of a strong sigma chi brotherhood. The events, friends, and staff at WCU helped shape into a responsible and compassionate adult who works hard, but also understands how important it is to give of my time and money to help others. The idea of bettering our world and lending that helping hand are the result of the strong teachings and sense of community developed from my time in Cullowhee.

What is the best part about WCU game day?

“Walking thru the stadium lot breathing in the fresh air, watching the hustle and bustle of the students at their tailgates, listening to the band warm up in the background. I've always enjoyed walking around to check out who has what food at every tailgate. Shaking hands and whooping it up in my purple garb gets me ready for kickoff."

What is your favorite Western Carolina sports moment?

“My favorite WCU sports moment goes back to a game against Chattanooga in 1989. The game was tied and down to the last play of the game. I was on the sideline broadcasting for campus radio, wearing a 30-lbs. mobile broadcast unit on my back. On the final play of the game, the UTC quarterback throws a deep pass down the sideline. Our defensive back intercepts the pass and runs up the sideline towards the end zone. When he gets to the 30 yard line I start running down the sideline with him while yelling at him to run. He scores the winning touchdown. This play was an ESPN play of the week. Chris Berman in his unique way gave commentary on the play. He mentioned that this was a heck of a play – but 'did you see the broadcast guy running the sideline? Sign him up.'”

What would your message be to other WCU alumni in encouraging them to be involved in philanthropic support of WCU student-athletes?

“The importance of alumni to WCU is off the charts. Alumni have no idea how much impact their time and financial investments in the university make. The studentathletes are an important group to the university, they represent the purple and gold all over the southeastern United States. It is truly our duty as alumni to invest in these athletes and the student body in general. We must help these kids achieve graduation from WCU, we must mentor these kids into responsible adults. The Catamount Club is the quintessential building block to begin this process! Donating money to the Club will produce a return that is immeasurable. The lives you touch and help will help proliferate success for multiple generations. I urge every alumni who supports the purple and gold to support the Catamount Club financially, this is vital to the continued success of WCU and its athletes. I’m always available on game days to talk the virtues of the Catamount Club. Go Cats!!"
